As everyone is most likely writing about the Brexit in their editorial columns this month, I’m not going to. Maybe, like me, you’re fed up of all the news coverage of that and you’d prefer to read something positive. Well you’ve come to the right place, as The Sentinella is all about staying positive, laughing, and having fun! I am going to begin by writing about my baby, Ty, as he invokes all the above feelings in me! He is now eight months old (which went by in the blink of an eye), and he is quickly growing huge. We think we have a six-footer on our hands in the future… He went from an inchworm version of crawling, to proper crawling, to standing against furniture one-handed, all within the last three weeks. We know walking will come next and then we’ll have to buy him his first pair of shoes! Recently he went to the local beach for the first time and played with his bucket and spade, and within the next few weeks we are visiting friends who have a salt water pool, so we’re sure he’s going to have lots of fun splashing and swimming in there… All in all life is fun with a baby. Hopefully you’re all having an amazing summer in Spain, where the weather never fails to disappoint at this time of year, apart from (what I remember) us Brits complaining about it being too hot. Oh well, better than it being too cold, in my opinion.

Strange News

I lived in Idaho for one and a half years which was covered in snow for four months every year… that certainly wasn’t my cup of tea and the Californian weather suits me far better. Hot and sunny every day until November – total bliss!

Enjoy the rest of the summer – only one month to go until most of the tourists clear off and then it’ll be back to some form of normality and tranquility, and you can go back to more space around you on the beach… Editor (of the original little mag)

Doll Alert Police were called to an apartment in Amsterdam after neighbours voiced their concerns about one of the occupants – a woman who had been standing still for a prolonged period of time. But it wasn't what it seemed. The 'lifeless woman' the cops found was actually a sex doll, much to their embarrassment. The team who attended the call said they witnessed a woman dressed in her underwear from outside, but when they rang the doorbell she would not answer. When they broke down the door, they said on a Facebook post that they "indeed found a lifeless woman," but she was "made of plastic and filled with air" as she was a sex doll. Police say that they moved the doll away from the window to prevent any future confusion.

Newsy Text A BBC newsreader was caught texting on air as her show went live in front of millions of viewers. Joanna Gosling was presenting the lunchtime bulletin when she was left red-faced after missing her cue. In a clip shared widely on social media, Joanna can be seen tapping away on her phone at the desk as the bulletin music starts playing. Realising she's missed her cue, Joanna sheepishly looks towards the camera and quickly puts her phone to one side. But, ever the professional, she immediately jumps straight back into her presenting role as though nothing has happened.

Baskin - Robbins

This incredible confectionary construction was built by Baskin-Robbins International using 3,100 scoops of ice cream in Maui, Hawaii back in May 2000

The pyramid weighed 800lb, 362.87kg and stood about 4 ft. 1.21m high for approximately 45 minutes. Over 80 Baskin-Robbins International executives, franchisees and flavour experts representing more than 20 countries created the 21-layer ice cream scoop that would surely have made any sweet-toothed pharaoh proud.

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer. ‘This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove

it you.’ The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, ‘Which do you want, son?’ The boy takes the quarters and leaves. ‘What did I tell you?’ said the barber. ‘That kid never learns!’ Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. ‘Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?’ The boy licked his cone and replied, ‘Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!’ ------------------------------------------------------------China has a population of a billion people. Interesting Facts Palaeontologists have discovered some of the earliest evidence of man's ancestors in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. There is no middle class in Kenya, either people are really poor or really rich. In spite of being an equatorial country, Kenya has pretty cold winters in most of its provinces. Kenya gained independence from the UK in 1963 and a very high percentage of the Kenyans speak good English.

Despite Kenya’s national sport being football, Kenya is perhaps best known for its middle and long distance runners, with the country frequently producing Olympic champions. Agriculture is important to Kenya’s economy, especially tea, coffee and flowers. Most coffee is exported however, as Kenyans are prolific tea drinkers.

Watermelon Facts

The best time to indulge in fresh, succulent, juicy melon, is summertime, when they are in season and deliver an array of nutrients, vitamin and minerals

Watermelon is incredibly hydrating (up to 92% water!) and is naturally low-fat. Make this melon a part of your daily diet and you will reap amazing benefits that range from improving cardiovascular health to nourishing your eyes and revving up your immune system!

Cardiovascular & Bone Health The lycopene in watermelon is especially important for our cardiovascular health and is now being recognised as an important factor in promoting bone health. Watermelon is also rich in potassium, which helps to retain calcium in your body, resulting in stronger bones and joints. Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant Support Watermelon is rich in phenolic compounds like flavonoids, carotenoids, and triterpenoids. The carotenoid lycopene in watermelon is particularly beneficial in reducing inflammation and neutralising free radicals.

Diuretic & Kidney Support Watermelon is a natural diuretic which helps increase the flow of urine, but does not strain the kidneys (unlike alcohol and caffeine). Muscle & Nerve Support Rich in potassium, watermelon is a great natural electrolyte and thus helps regulate the action of nerves and muscles in our body. Alkaline-forming Watermelons have an alkaline-forming effect in the body when fully ripe. Eating lots of alkalineforming foods (fresh, ripe, fruit and vegetables) can help reduce your risk of developing disease and illness caused by a high-acid diet (namely, meat, eggs and dairy).

Improves Eye Health Watermelon is a wonderful source of betacarotene (that rich red hue of watermelon = beta carotene) which is converted in the body to vitamin A. It helps produce the pigments in the retina of the eye and protects against agerelated macular degeneration as well as prevents night blindness.

Puente Don Manuel or The Bridge of Don Manuel, is a Hamlet belonging to Alcaucin and is situated close to La Viñuela village.

The eponymous bridge is very picturesque with four arches, surrounded by very green trees and horses grazing in a field below. At one end of the bridge is the local bar/restaurant and a shop and the other end is the small church.

The Hamlet used to be a traveller’s resting place before the long climb up to the Boquete de Zafarraya, the gateway to Granada Province.

These days the area is known locally by ex pats as Little England, not the actual Hamlet, but further up at the Cruce de Periana cross roads

where you can turn up towards Periana or down towards Venta Baja. This area is full of English shops, bars, hairdressers, boutiques and even a beauty salon and on Fridays there is an English Market.

The Hamlet is situated just 14 kilometres from the coast and 40 kilometres from Malaga, at an altitude of 225 metres. The drive there takes in stunning views past the reservoir at Viñuela and up towards Zafarraya where the Boquete cuts into the skyline like giants bosoms!

Looking up towards it the road looks like a model railway and the traffic like tiny trains. As magnificent as this view is it can get even better on the return journey from Granada Province where the land, although high, if flat!

The view as you drive through the Boquete, at an altitude of 1,100 metres, is awesome, with the Axarquia unfolding in front of your eyes, the villages, mountains, lake and sea each competing for attention. Be careful as you make the ascent as your ears can pop!

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom terraced house with garden, the middle of just 3 houses situated in a private gated area. The property is walking distance to all the amenities of Puente don Manuel and not far from Viñuela village. It comprises entrance hall with cloakroom, study/utility room, lounge with french windows to garden and double intercommunicating doors to dining room, dining room with french windows to garden, fitted kitchen, stairs to very large master bedroom with walk in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom with separate shower cubicle, air conditioning, french windows to balcony.

A HISTORIC REFERENDUM On Thursday June 23, the people of Britain voted for a British exit, or Brexit, from the European Union in a historic referendum. This decision has prompted jubilant celebration whilst sending shockwaves through the global economy. Over the next two years or so, Britain will negotiate its exit under article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER BRITAIN EXITS THE EU Through the withdrawal negotiations, nothing will change for British expats in Spain because the UK will remain part of the EU during this transitional period. However, what happens after Britain has left the EU and how this may affect you is still unclear.

LEGAL ASSISTANCE SERVICE Whilst many questions remain unanswered, Línea Directa would like to remind all its customers that its Legal Assistance service comes as standard in all their insurance policies. If you have a query you can call one of our lawyers. They offer information and advice on a wide range of matters such as taxes, purchase and rental of property, inheritance, family etc. As the Brexit negotiations evolve, our legal team will keep abreast of all the latest de-

velopments relating to events occurring in the Spanish territory and those to which Spanish legislation is applicable. 24-HOUR ASSISTANCE FOR EMERGENCY LEGAL CONSULTATIONS Should you require an immediate legal consultation, which due to the gravity of the matter in hand cannot wait, we offer a 24-hour legal advice service. Regardless of the time of day, we can provide immediate specialist legal advice for emergency incidents relating to you, your family or your home. IN ENGLISH The service is entirely in English. From the drafting and revision of legal documents to negotiations with third parties and or opposing parties. We can’t provide all the answers to the questions raised by the Britain’s exit of the EU, but we can provide sound legal advice for our expatriate customers living in Spain. Asbestos - Have You Been In Contact?

In this edition, I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask!

I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960’s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a persons work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the persons estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the

breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link.

Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge. I can be contacted on 00 44 1244 340560 at or alternatively you can visit my website at

Touristic Rental Tax Obligations - By Axarquia Solicitors Law Office

At the moment the rate for VAT applicable for tourist Rentals is 10%. The application of this rate depends upon the complementary services that are offered. We can take as a reference the following services expressly determined by the General Directorate of Taxes to be considered as complementary Services that are directly related to the hotel industry: • Weekly cleaning inside the accommodation. • Weekly change of linen and bedding. On the contrary, the following services are NOT considered to be directly related complimentary services: • Entrance and exit cleaning service. • Linen and bedding change service provided only at entrance and exit. • Cleaning services for common areas (i.e. foyer, stairs, and lifts), not in the urbanisation (i.e. green areas, entrances, and pathways). • Technical assistance for any repairs carried out for plumbing or electrical faults, glass, lock, or appliance breakage or repairs. Following are some examples showing the rate of tax that should be applied in each situation: 1. When the owner of the property rents to a tenant directly and does not provide the complementary services stated in the first para-

graph the rental paid would be exempt from VAT. 2. When the owner of the property rents to a tenant directly, but in this case does provide the complementary services stated in the first paragraph, the rental paid would be subject to the application of 10% VAT. 3. When the owner of the property rents to professionals or businesses in order to exercise their professional activity in the property then the rate of VAT to be applied would be 21%, as it is considered that as an intermediary is involved that the owner is not directly providing any services. Thus the intermediary would be the one to charge 10% VAT directly to the tenant. Axarquía Solicitors is part of Marbellasolicitors SLP, a group of lawyers and tax specialists that have over 15 years experience assisting foreign buyers and vendors in Andalucía. Therefore do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a free, no obligation appointment to discuss your particular case with one of our specialists. Found! 18ft Python

A huge 18ft python has been found in a UK canal. It stuns a kayaker who says, “it's the most unusual thing" he's ever found

A rare canal visitor has been spotted by a kayaker in the East Midlands - an 18ft-long python! However there was no risk to Sebastian Bishop when he came across the reptile in Leicester, as it was already dead.

The 44-year-old was out in the Grand Union Canal in Aylestone when he spotted the massive albino Indian python. The lorry driver was boating on May 8th, where he got the shock of his life.

"I had been in the canal all day, just messing about having fun. As I passed under a bridge on the stretch at Aylestone I saw a long slim shape just under the water. I went to investigate and prodded it with my paddle. I lifted part of it up and was shocked to see it was a snake. I dragged it towards the bank with my paddle. When I got out and dragged it on to the grass, it just kept coming and coming. I could not believe how long it was. I reckon it was about 18ft long. A woman passer-by called the RSPCA but no one answered the phone. I just had to

leave it there. I have been kayaking along the canal for about three years now and it is the most unusual thing I have found. I have come across all kinds of rubbish, but nothing quite like this. I have found a few footballs and I take them home for my dogs to play with. I am just glad the snake was dead, because I didn’t fancy wrestling with a live one in the water."

Animal experts believe the snake was either abandoned or escaped from a private collection. Miguel Bueno, curator of living collections at Twycross Zoo, said: "It is most likely an escaped pet. "The yellow and white markings clearly distinguish it as an albino and the brown is just mud. “This species is found in Southern Asia."

Love your eyelash curlers?

If you swear by them, this eye-watering tale may make you change your mind

They're supposedly the windows to the soul, and as such, many of us like to enhance our peepers - and keep them as healthy as possible . There are eyedrops for when they're feeling a little tired and dry, sunglasses to keep them safe from harmful UV light. Then there's all that lovely eye make-up. Mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, highlighter, concealer and of course, eyelash curlers. Now, these have a lot of people divided. They do slightly resemble a miniature torture device. Then again, a lot of people swear by them - so how bad can they be?

Former user of eyelash curlers, Jane Smith posted a photo of the tools in question on Red-

dit - with half of her eyelashes clenched in their metallic jaws. But how did this happen? Apparently, all she did was sneeze while going about her curling routine. "I really thought I ripped my eyelid in half," she wrote. Fortunately, there was no serious or lasting damage.

The good news is that eyelashes do grow back. The bad news is that they take their sweet time doing so - it can take up to eight weeks

And if the lady in question is reading this, apparently sulfur-rich food expedites this process. So lots of lovely cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.. yum yum!

What we all complain about......

"I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts." "The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun."

"It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair."

"I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends' three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller." "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the resort.' We're trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service."

Opening times: Monday from 13.30 Tuesday from 18.30 Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 19.00 (earlier for special sporting events) Closed Wednesdays & Thursdays

"When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners." "We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning."

"It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel."

"I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes."

"My fiancée and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked."

The Meaning Of August

August is the eighth month of the year, the Romans gave this month its name in 8BC, after the first Roman Emperor Augustus who ruled from 27BC until his death in AD14 Before then, the month had been known as Sextilis, as it was the sixth of ten months in the Roman Calendar, which began with March. The Anglo-Saxon called August “Weodmonath” meaning “weed month”. The birthstones for August are the peridot and the sardonyx and the flowers are the gladiolus and poppy.

Henry VI Part 1 and The Tempest are the only plays by Shakespeare that mention the month of August. In 2015, August is the only month beginning on a Saturday.

Warren Harding was the only US President to have died in the month of August. August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley died.

On August 20, 1630, Lemonade was first served in Paris, France.

August was the 55th most common name given to a baby boy in Sweden in 2014.

Statistics show that 22 per cent of men named August in Sweden were born in August.

Almijara Bowls Club - Nerja

Hello to all those people living in Nerja and surrounding areas!

I know that many of you are retired and living here with many hours of free time and not knowing what to do to fill it. Some of you may be physically fit enough to enjoy tennis, others maybe play bridge, but there are those of you who are looking for a more relaxing form of sport that has fewer physical requirements. Well look no further. I am David Trippas, president of the Almijara Bowls Club in Nerja. We play short mat bowling which has very similar rules to green bowling and indoor long mat bowling. The game of short mat bowling requires skill – as in any other sport – and it is very competitive. It gives a great sense of achievement when you are able to achieve success in winning games. We have 62 members who enjoy bowling throughout the year for seven days a week, so should you wish to try your hand at this sport, it's possible for you to come along to our club days which are on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the morning starting 10.30am-1.30pm. If you are new to the game we will coach you and lend shoes and bowls to suit. Our members are ladies and gents and compete against each

other on the same level. Non members pay as visitors to the club – 5€ – which would include the club equipment and coaching should you be totally new to this sport. We have had an excellent response this year from short-term visitors who have enjoyed the sport and the company. This sport is for all ages and not just old age pensioners. Most of the top competitions in bowling are won by people in the age group of 16 to 40 years. We are located opposite the Nerja Club Hotel near the entrance to the El Capistrano Village at the La Raqueta Tenis. We have good signage facing the N340. We also enjoy functions throughout the year, such as dinner dances and presentation nights for those lucky enough to have won in competitions. I came to live in Nerja 12 years ago this club changed my life after I joined it. My wife and I play at least three times a week. I am sure that if you were to ask all our club members what has been the best thing that they have done since living here or visiting here for six months of the year, the answer would be they joined us at the Almijara Bowls Club, Nerja! Come along or call me on 65 35 95 784 Alternatively send me an email

Wedding bells ITV’s ‘Emmerdale’ stars Chris Chittell and Lesley Dunlop married in a Cornish village recently. The pair wed in front of family and friends at St Peter’s Church in Coverack, and held their wedding reception at the nearby Paris Hotel. Co-stars including Nicola Wheeler (Nicola King) and Bhasker Patel (Rishi Sharma) were also present to witness the nuptials. Lesley, who plays Brenda Walker in the soap, and Chris (Eric Pollard) began dating soon after she joined the ITV soap in 2008, and announced their engagement last year. He was previously married for 26 years to Caroline Hunt before splitting in 2005, while she has two children from her relationship with actor Christopher Guard.

Galloping glamour Katie Price is bringing her love of all things equestrian to TV screens in a new six-part reality series this summer. ‘Katie Price’s Pony Club’ will see the former glamour model, known as Jordan, create a ‘pony club’ team with daughter Princess, son Junior and four of their closest friends. The TLC programme will follow the six young novice riders – and their competitive mums – and the team, based at Katie’s home, will take on a different form of riding (including drag hunting, show jumping, reining and dressage) each episode. The series ends with the group competing in a high society game of polo. “I’ve not done a reality show for four years and I’m so excited to be doing this with TLC,” said Katie. “This really is a dream come true. “It brings together my biggest passions – my family, my friends and my animals. Expect a lot of pink, a lot of noise, much chaos and a fair few feathers ruffled along the way!”

Dame Judi Dench has once again proven herself as one of the true greats, by revealing she celebrated her 81st birthday in style with her first-ever tattoo. The screen and stage legend’s inking reads ‘Carpe Diem’ and was part of her birthday present from her daughter, Finty. In an article in Surrey Life magazine, Judi explains, “That’s my motto: ‘Seize the day. Finty gave it to me for my 81st birthday – she’s wonderful with surprises.” The actress got the tat, which is on her right wrist, while starring on the West End stage, and she goes on to add that her cast mates did have one joke about it. “The company of ‘A Winter’s Tale’ used to say that it said ‘fish of the day’,” she says.

Love gear At last something lovely’s come out of the rebooted series of ‘Top Gear’… for co-host Matt LeBlanc at least. The US star is reported to be romancing producer Aurora Mulligan after meeting her on the set of the motoring show. The pair were pictured together recently, enjoying the action at the Hickstead Derby in West Sussex, where The Sun reported that onlookers were naturally quick to remark on their “besotted” and “inseparable” body language. While Matt’s spokesperson previously confirmed there was nothing going on, a ‘Top Gear’ source has now confirmed “the pair are now more than friends” – in dramatic contrast to the rumoured coldness between Matt and his cohost Chris Evans. Reports have surfaced that Matt has issued ‘Top Gear‘ bosses with an ultimatum over Chris Evans, telling them: “It’s him or me.” The former ‘Friends‘ star is said to have told producers of the BBC Two motoring show he will quit unless the Radio 2 DJ is axed. & t i u Fr Facts Veg Peas

Many people think peas are just a poor man’s meat or a cheap restaurant side dish that puts ‘green’ on your plate. How wrong they are!

Peas are really little powerhouses of nutrition that are a boon for your health and the whole planet.

They are low in fat but high in everything else, and are therefore useful in weight management programmes. A cup of peas has less than 100 calories but lots of protein, fibre and micronutrients. Peas contain high amounts of a health-protective polyphenol called coumestrol. A study in Mexico City determined you only need 2 milligrams per day of this phytonutrient to help prevent stomach cancer. A cup of peas has at least 10mg. Peas can help fight ageing, strengthen the immune system and supply high levels of energy. This comes from the high levels of anti-oxidants including the flavonoids, catechin and epicatechin; carotenoids alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, and phenolic acids ferulic and caffeic acid. They also contain polyphenols such as coumestrol. They are active in the prevention of wrinkles and help to curb Alzheimer’s, arthritis, bronchitis, osteoporosis and candida. This is because of their strong anti-inflammatory properties. These properties include: Pisumsaponins I and II and pisomosides A and B, which are anti-inflammatory phytonutrients found almost exclusively in peas; vitamin C and vitamin E, and a good amount of the antioxidant mineral zinc; omega-3 fat in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Peas can help regulate blood sugar levels, because their high fibre and protein slow down how fast sugars are digested, while the anti-ox-

idants and anti-inflammatory agents prevent or reverse insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes).

Peas are useful in the prevention of heart disease because the many antioxidant and antiinflammatory compounds support healthy blood vessels. The formation of plaque along our blood vessel walls starts with chronic, excessive oxidative stress and inflammation. The generous amounts of vitamin B1 and folate, B2, B3, and B6 reduce homocysteine levels which are a risk factor for heart disease. Bone health is boosted by peas too. Just one cup of peas contains 44% of your daily Vitamin K intake, which helps to anchor calcium inside the bones. Its B vitamins also help to prevent osteoporosis.

They help in the fight against bad cholesterol due to their niacin content, which helps to reduce the production of triglycerides and VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein.)

The World's Most Expensive Doughnut

The luxurious creation includes some unusual ingredients, and it can be yours for a rather large sum of money

It's just shy of the average net monthly wage in the UK, at around £1500. But if you've already stayed at the Ritz, don't need a new boiler (or anything else for that matter) and really feel like splashing out, you can buy this, the world’s most expensive doughnut hybrid, courtesy of artisan doughnut maker Dum Dum Donutterie. The Luxury Zebra Cro It’s given its name due to its striped layers, the Luxury Zebra Cro is technically a doughnutcroissant hybrid. Usually, these are simply referred to as a ‘cronut,’ but in the case of the Luxury Zebra Cro, it is simply too posh to be named this.

It is one of a kind. Unfortunately for your bank balance (but fortunately for your teeth), you will not be biting into a mouthful of battered diamonds. Nor does it result in eternal youth. However, the ingredients comprising the Lux-

ury Zebra Cro are nevertheless still pretty decadent.

Ingredients: Iranian saffron infused butter croissant dough, Cristal Rose Champagne Caviar, gold leaf decoration, French delicacy Normandy butter, powdered Nutella and the world’s most expensive Amedei Porcelana Chocolate.

The luxurious morsel had been created to celebrate the inaugural Just Eat Food Fest which took place in in Shoreditch, London in July. Dum Dum Donutterie Founder and creator of the Luxury Zebra Cro, Paul Hurley said, “After months of testing flavour combinations with some of the world’s rarest and specially sourced ingredients, I’ve created the most luxurious Cro I’ve tasted!” Fans of the Cro can order the decadent dessert for a limited time only on Just Eat

It grows to more than 65' (15 metres) in length and has 23 feet of girth, but larger individuals as long as 59 feet have been reported. It weighs 10 tons (47,300 lbs).

The Latin name for this incredible fish is rhincodon typus. It is larger than the average school bus.

Whale sharks also lay the largest eggs of any animal, measuring 14 inches long.

They get their name from their size and not their diet. With 3000 tiny teeth, they are omnivores that

feed by swimming with their mouths wide open, collecting plankton, small fish and anything that is around.

After draining the water out of their gills, anything that’s left is dinner. They also sieve squid, krill, and small fish. In 2008, a group of whale shark experts at the International Whale Shark Conference decided that August 30th should be dedicated to celebrating whale sharks, educating people about them and promoting their conservation. So began International Whale Shark Day. Whale sharks are in no way related to whales. Although they are sharks, they are very docile and pose no real threats to humans.

Swimming with whale sharks is a life-changing experience, but it must be done responsibly. Mexico’s whale shark tourism industry has grown significantly in the last several years, increasing from just a few hundred tourists annually to over 12,000 per year.

Whale sharks aren’t the fastest swimmers, reaching speeds no higher than 5 kmph. They swim by moving their bodies from side to side, unlike other sharks like the great white, who just use their tails to swim.

People Who Come And Go - Tony & Wendy: From Inland To The Coast

It started on 9th April this year, the day Wendy and Tony put their stunning country cortijo near Periana onto the market, after deciding to finally bite the bullet and move further towards the coast. By 11th July their removal van was moving their furniture into a new house on the coast – who said the market was slow in Andalusia!!

Like so many ex-pats who have enjoyed living in the countryside here for over a decade, Tony and Wendy were finally ready to think sensibly. They love living here and had no intention of moving back to the UK, after 15 years of being here. But they are in their seventies, still fit, but thinking about the future. So they decided on a plan: put the cortijo onto the market and wait for a buyer; when they finally had a buyer, they would look for a new house and plan their next life move. They didn’t expect the house to sell so rapidly and the last two months have been a whirlwind of activities and life-changing decisions! I asked them why they thought it had happened so quickly. Wendy’s immediate answer was that it was down to that Toni Waterman, with her fantastic write-ups and matching the right client to the right house. “We were very

surprised, the first client who came to see it fell in love with it!” But I think it was more than anything like that – it was having an incredibly beautiful house, in an amazing location, and at the right price! And a lovely lady, full of new excitement has bought it and Wendy and Tony were suddenly faced with the fact that their plans had become a reality. The buyer wanted to complete quickly and suddenly they needed to find themselves somewhere new to live! Destiny was obviously on their side. Within no time, they found a house, and it was perfect for them! Just 500 metres from the beach, a large house with work to do, but nothing this still very fit couple could not take on, and within a matter of weeks, they were signing the purchase agreement and packing up. Perhaps other couples who read this article will be planning a similar life move. I asked Tony what advice he would give such people. “I would say, don’t leave it too late. Packing and unpacking can take it out of you, it’s tough, physical work. And do it while you are still able to truly enjoy your next move!” By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advertisement below)

La Vaqueria - Benamargosa

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us and sent congratulations for La Vaquerias tenth birthday; we had a packed garden with live music to mark the day with good food and good fun was enjoyed by all

La Vaqueria Country Kitchen has developed over the years as we started to get more and more visitors coming from further afield for the arts and crafts and it soon became apparent that we would have to offer refreshments... a cup of tea and cake has now developed into a full menu with daily specials too. Traditional, home made and ecological are our aims so we offer a varied menu of traditional flavours from around the world along with the much loved Sunday Lunch Buffet and the Full English Breakfast (available during all opening hours). In recent months we have noticed more and more requests for special diets so we have now developed sugar free, wheat free and lactose free recipes along with our already extensive range of both vegetarian and vegan dishes. As an experiment I put a wheat and sugar free fruit cake onto the desserts table, surrounded by extra chocolatey chocolate

cakes etc and guess which one went first? Yep, everyone agreed the "sin" fruit cake was simply delicious!

Of course, La Vaqueria Arts and Crafts Centre was the original idea with the home restaurant simply evolving alongside as we strove to cater for our customers every need. The latest crafting craze is painted stones and pebbles... some have been having fun in the art classes making unique garden pets and ornaments. Others have bought theirs or commissioned their own designs. The range is expanding rapidly with my latest fairy houses and cottages bringing a smile to all. Do drop by for a browse; they make great little inexpensive gifts and souvenirs. We are now open 7 days a week from 10am - 7pm with fresh cake and a welcoming smile ready and waiting!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is better than its predecessor, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, it is a movie that does not make any sense beyond extending the commercial longevity of four cartoon characters who now look largely unlovable. This is the kind of movie where clearly more thought was put into catchphrases and fan service than into a compelling plot, thoughtful characterizations or imaginative action. The plot is nothing more than a heap of dramaless developments that rely on sheer coincidence, hideous convolutions, and ridiculous

dialogue to move forward.

Out of the Shadows lacks even a modicum of escapist joy that the live-action Ninja Turtles films of the '90s had. The plot is essentially lifted from several other Ninja Turtles-related stories. Stay at home rather than fork out for cinema tickets for this one! Star Rating - / ***** (yes, that’s a zero!)

Cuisine (And Wine) Matters

There are numerous wines, produced in Germany, that are very popular and of highquality. VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) indicates that the wine is from the best terroirs and that strict guidelines have been adhered to, in the production of that wine. Then – and only then – can the VDP logo be displayed on the bottle.

The extremely popular Riesling wines offer excellent value for money and are complimented on many times, at occasions, making splendid pairings for food, as well as being enjoyed on their own. Riesling is a white grape variety, utilised for producing dry, semi-sweet, sweet

and sparkling wines. The Riesling varietal is a leader for German winemaking. Many German winemakers produce Riesling wines and I located a company with a splendid range of wines, many of which are produced using superb high-quality Riesling grapes.

Weingut Bürgerspital has won numerous awards and is one of the largest German wine estates. Also, being one of the oldest wine estates in Germany, the quality, knowledge and expertise, is legendary. Their range of wines includes very well-loved Silvaner Trocken, Scheurebe Kabinett and Riesling Trocken. These excellent wines have many devotees and are chosen constantly, having very good bouquets and wonderful palate sensations. Rielsing wines are acknowledged for their enticing aromas and the ability to accompany

many dishes, including white meats, wonderfully. Other productions, from Bürgerspital, include Müller-Thurgau Trocken, Scheurebe Feinherb and Randersackerer Teufelskeller Rielsing. These very popular wines, again, have excellent bouquets and are great on the mouthfeel. This company’s wine range is from dry, through less dry, to several others, which include Auslese and Würzburger Stein-Harfe Riesling Spätlese. This is a favourite with many – including me – and selected to grace many dining tables, regularly.

Rielsing wines are most able to accompany numerous dishes, including fish, seafood and chicken, extremely well. These are just a selection of the wines, produced by Weingut Bürgerspital, which I found to have great character and elegance. Outstanding wines, excellently presented, in beautiful bottles. Information about the winery and all of their wines produced can be located on the website.

Colmenar Social Club

Last month I wrote about a cookery demonstration at one of Colmenar Social Club’s events. This month I should mention what the club is all about It is a group of like-minded people, whose main aim is to promote frendship and assistance to all their members. They meet every Wednesday at around 12.30pm at the Arco Del Sol Hotel on the outskirts of Colmenar (A356 VelezMalaga to Casabermeja road km9). It’s a superb venue with versatility and the proprietors Antonio and Rosa are very supportive and helpful.

They enjoy a variety of activities throughout the

year including in addition to the cookery demonstration, wine tasting, talks on various subjects from lawyers, estate agents, council officials, local police, etc. They organise days out to interesting venues where they car share, go on treasure hunts, special lunches at different restaurants, have plant sales, homemade produce sales, many other activities and of course the popular quizzes and games. Everyone, no matter what nationality, is made to feel welcome, so why not come along one Wednesday and enjoy a few hours with them and maybe you’ll enjoy the experience so much, you’ll join in!!! They certainly hope so. For more information please contact Marjorie 952 037 556 or email Claire on or visit our facebook page Colmenar Social Club to see our activities.
