It’s now November - well late October as I write this - and I still haven’t had to dig out my winter clothes, or even my autumn clothes come to that. How wonderfully blessed we are to live here in Spain where the sun loves to shine! I’ve been enjoying some wonderful morning time beach walks, splashing my feet along the ever-changing shoreline. Yesterday, as I strolled, I discovered a lone prawn dying helplessly on the shore. I looked into its little black dots of eyes, and watched it writhe around with its cracked shell and suddenly I felt a surge of emotion inside for this prawn. Not because I felt sorry that it was dying, but because I felt overjoyed that it was on its way to a better place. Then I wondered whether there's a special Prawn Heaven, or maybe a more general Sea Heaven for all the sea creatures? But whatever type of heaven it is, I'm sure the prawn I met this morning is already there, swimming in divine waters and feeling amazing. I’m feeling very happy today as I’ve just received a beautifully drawn handmade card by the girl I sponsor in Tibet. Her name is Karma and her latest school reports show that she’s doing very well across the board, achieving mostly A and B grades. It warms my heart to know that the small amount of money I donate each month allows Karma to continue attending school and furthering her education. In the card she calls me her ‘daughter’ which is very endearing.

Strange News

Throughout the summer we at The Sentinella have been so busy that we’ve had little chance to think. Today, however, I stole a rare chance to sit back and reflect and I realised how thankful the entire Sentinella team is for you guys – our amazing readers and advertisers. We love that you love The Sentinella, almost as much as we love you :)

Expensive snack A Chinese man bought his girlfriend a gold necklace and hid it in a cake - only for her to wolf it down in one gulp.

Warm wishes and abundant blessings to each and every one of you…

Keidi Keating

Editor (of the original little mag)!

Xaio Li, 22, watched horrified as Wang Xue, 22, swallowed the £500 necklace he'd baked inside a special muffin for her birthday party in Qingdao, Shangdong province. "I thought it would show how much I love her and it would be a good joke too," he said. "But before I could say anything she'd swallowed it in one bite and I had to tell her the truth on the way to hospital." After X-raying Xue, surgeons decided to operate to remove the necklace. She underwent endoscopic surgery where a probe was put down her throat and into her stomach, recovering the jewellery. Long walk home After 11 years, 46,600 miles, 64 countries and 53 pairs of shoes, Canadian Jean Beliveau is coming home from the longest uninterrupted walk around the world. Mr Beliveau, now 56, left Montreal on his 45th birthday, August 18, 2000, after his small sign business went bankrupt, leaving behind his girlfriend and two grown-up sons.

Best Divorce Letter Yet!! Dear Wife I’m writing you this letter to tell you that I’m leaving you forever. I’ve been a good man to you for seven years & I have nothing to show for it. These last 2 weeks have been hell... Your boss called to tell me that you quit your job today & that was the last straw. Last week, you came home and didn’t even notice I had a new haircut, had cooked your favourite meal and even wore a brand new pair of silk boxers. You ate in 2 minutes and went straight to sleep after watching all of your soaps. You don’t tell me you love me anymore nor do you don’t want sex or anything that connects us as husband and wife. Either you’re cheating on me or you don’t love me anymore. Whatever the case, I’m gone. Your EX-Husband. P.S. Don’t try to find me. Your sister and I are moving away to England together! Have a great life! Dear Ex-Husband Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It’s true you and I have been married for seven years, although a good man is a far cry from what you’ve been. I watch my soaps so much because they drown out your

constant whining & griping. Too bad that doesn’t work. I did notice when you got a hair cut last week, but the first thing that came to mind was ‘You look just like a girl!’ Since my mother raised me not to say anything if you can’t say something nice, I didn’t comment. When you cooked my favourite meal, you must have gotten me confused with my sister, because I stopped eating pork seven years ago. About those new silk boxers: I turned away from you because the €50 price tag was still on them & I prayed it was a coincidence that my sister had just borrowed €50 from me that morning. After all of this, I still loved you and felt we could work it out. So when I hit the Euro Millions for 60 million euros, I quit my job & bought us 2 tickets to Jamaica, but when I got home you were gone. Everything happens for a reason, I guess. I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted. My solicitor said that the letter you wrote ensures you won’t get a cent from me. So take care. Signed, Your Ex-Wife, Rich As Hell & Free! P.S. I don’t know if I ever told you this, but my sister Carla was born Carl. I hope that’s not a problem.

De Cotta British workers overseas – Employment Law News from De Cotta Law Where employees work abroad even for many months at a time they may still be entitled to claim the range of rights including unfair dismissal under the British legislation, the Employment Rights Act 1996 (ERA `96). This could be beneficial as these rights can be wider than those provided under Spanish law. It used to be the case that the ERA `96 did not apply to any employment where the employee ordinarily works abroad´ but this clause was removed in 1999 and there is now no statutory provision dealing with this issue, rather it is a matter of case law. To fall within this legislation, the employee has to prove that there is a sufficiently close connection with Great Britain. The employees in the cases of Serco v. Lawson (2006) and MOD v Wallis (2010) were successful in substantiating this. In the case of Serco v. Lawson, a UK company employee was working in the Ascension Islands and all services were carried out there. The Judge gave two circumstances where an employment relationship

might be sufficiently closely connected with GB so as to enable an unfair dismissal claim to be made under the British legislation and these are: (i) where an employee is posted abroad to work for a business conducted in Britain and/or (ii) where he is working in a political or social British enclave abroad. In MOD v. Wallis the employees were employed by NATO in Europe. These employees were the wives of armed forces personnel and were employed as such by reason of their husbands´ employment. This was sufficient to establish the connection as they were said to be working in a similar situation to (ii) in Serco and were entitled to claim unfair dismissal notwithstanding that they were not employed within GB. The employees also succeeded in claiming sex discrimination on the basis that it is a matter of EU law and therefore irrelevant which national law is applicable, provided that it is the law of a member state within the EU. However in relation to unfair dismissal, the recent case of Duncombe & others v. Secretary of State for Children, Schools and families (2011) narrowed the criteria somewhat and held that employees working or based abroad can claim this right in GB only in exceptional circumstances where the employment has much stronger connections with the country and with British employment law than with any other system of law. It cannot therefore be assumed that responsibility for an employee passes entirely to the overseas organisation in these circumstances. It will depend on the facts of each case. To obtain advice as to British and Spanish employment rights and the applicable law please contact Maria Corder. How The Human Mind Works See the picture below; we will analyse what it represents to some groups of people...

thong. For older men - it is a respectable woman with a nice bum crossing the street. The perverts - will imagine her as a naked woman. The wise men - will ponder the presence of mind of the photographer in the face of such beauty and gratitude that it was shared with humanity. For half of the women - this is an ordinary woman who should not have left home dressed that way. The other half - is wondering where she bought that blouse. The wise women - imagine the misery that this will be at 50.

For young men - it's a nice bum. Only the most observant will define this as a bum crossing the street. The really observant will see the

Children, the curious, and monks - will probably notice a dog driving the taxi.. Don't be alarmed, I didn't see the dog either.

Bang! Don’t suppose we will hear many firework bangs here in Spain on November 5th, but think of the folks back home on the day and enjoy these historic facts‌ The ancient Chinese used fireworks at festivities and to frighten enemies in battle. Legend has it that the Chinese made the first fireworks in the 800s, filling bamboo shoots with gunpowder and exploding them in the New Year with the hope that the sound would scare away evil spirits. According to tradition, Marco Polo brought this technology back to Europe. Fireworks became known in Europe during the 1300s, probably after returning Crusaders brought them from the East. By the 1400s Florence, Italy, was the centre of fireworks manufacturing.

At religious festivals Italians made plaster figures that spewed fireworks from their eyes and mouths. During the 1700s displays became more elaborate and were popular with European royalty. French King Louis XV ordered extravagant displays of fireworks at Versailles, and Russian Tsar Peter the Great put on a five-hour show after the birth of his son. Meanwhile, in the American colonies settlers used fireworks to mark happy occasions. Today fireworks are a key part of celebrating Independence Day in the United States, Guy Fawkes' Day in the United Kingdom, Bastille Day in France, and New Year festivities around the world. The multi-hued displays we know now began in the 1830s, when Italians added trace amounts of metals that burn at high temperatures, creating beautiful colours.

Good News For Dogs - And People We are finally getting a vaccine against the very much feared leishmaniosis!! Leishmaniosis is a widely distributed disease, endemic in the Mediterranean area, Asia and America. It is a zoonosis, which means it transmits from dogs to humans via a little sand fly. About 3,000 people with leishmaniosis have been hospitalised in Spain in the last few years. It is estimated that at least 2.5 million dogs are infected in South-West Europe, and the prevalence in Spanish dogs is up to 30 per cent! The disease evolves when the dog’s immune system doesn’t manage to stop the parasite. It then multiplies in the dogs own cells, distributing itself from the skin to the bone marrow, spleen and liver, resulting in spreading immune complexes. These are are formed by cells invaded by the parasite, plus the cells that are trying to fight it. We then see the inflammatory reactions in different organs; hence why we encounter so many different symptoms. Most of the methods available for control and treatment of leishmaniosis have a limited effect. New studies have shown that if we manage to control the infection in dogs, the risk of passing the infection on to other animals and humans is much less. Therefore, a vaccine against leishmaniosis in dogs could be very important, because we can stimulate the dog’s immune system so it can fight the parasite before it multiplies in its body and causes disease and further infections.

Why then has it taken so long to produce an effective vaccine? First of all, parasites have a tendency to stimulate an exaggerated, but not effective, immune response in the animal it has infected. This will then also occur with the vaccine, as it is just a “copy” of an attack from the parasite. For leishmania, the problem is also that it is an expert in avoiding the immune system by attacking cells that can’t defend themselves, and it inhibits the defence mechanisms in the cells that are specialised in defence, such as the macrophages. On top of that, all parasites present a unique lifecycle, whereby they undergo different stages (egg, worm, nymph, etc.) which further complicates the development of a vaccine, because against which stage do you want the immune system to react? The new vaccine is not 100 per cent effective, but it does stop most vaccinated dogs from being infected, and those that get infected despite the vaccine, are much less likely to develop the disease. Therefore, it is still a good idea to use collars or pipettes to prevent your dog from being attacked by the sand fly. All dogs over six months, free of leishmania, can get vaccinated. The protocol is to vaccinate the dog three times with a time span of three weeks between each vaccine, and thereafter once a year. The vaccine was launched in Portugal this year, and should arrive in Spain in the beginning of 2012.

Grow Old Gracefully! Signs that you really are going bald 1. Your parting keeps getting wider...and wider. 2. You wear a T-Shirt that says, "The more hair I lose, the more head I get!" 3. People start calling you 'Mr. Clean'. 4. Your hair is actually 5 feet long because you use it to cover the bald part! 5. The thought of growing your eyebrows to preposterous lengths and combing them straight back actually crosses your mind. 6. In the morning, your wife tells you the sun rises twice! 7. You need sunglasses to look

at your reflection in the mirror first thing in the morning. 8. You're still using the same bottle of shampoo after two years...and it ain't "economysized", neither! 9. The barber starts charging you less for hair-cuts. 10. Movie producers call you to star in a remake of Kojac. 11. Each day takes longer to wash your face. 12. You no longer have a dandruff problem. 13. Your dog is irritated by how much you are shedding. You can’t hide it either by chopping your head off !!

The Word Queen Using Twitter To Sell Books Marketing your book via social media is a powerful tool, as it allows the author to build a relationship with the reader. Not only that, but it doesn’t have a direct monetary cost. The only cost is your time. I have around three thousand followers on Twitter and every time I write a new post or come across an interesting article, I send it to three thousand people, so never underestimate the power of using Twitter to sell books. Twitter Tips - Go to and create an account. Upload a quality photo of yourself to your profile. Next, write an effective profile using keywords in your text. For example, you should mention that you’re an author, whether fiction or non-fiction, the title of your book and what niche / topic / genre it focuses on. It always works to add something a little more personal to your profile too. Make sure you include the url of the blog you’ve set up especially for your book. Next, start following people, but find the right

people to follow… not just any people. Targeted people. So how do you do that? Well I’ve found a few ways: 1. Type keywords relating to your niche in the Twitter search box at the top of the home page. Twitter will display all the posts containing those keywords and you can follow those people. Many will follow you back automatically. 2. Create an account with Again, use the search box or the category listings provided to type in your niche keywords and find other Twitter users with those words in their profile. A list will appear and you can follow any of them direct from that page (without having to go to Twitter). 3. Create an account with – this is a Godsend, as you can set up an automatic DM to send anyone that follows you. You can also have Social Oomph automatically follow people who use your keywords either in their posts or in their profile. Love & Light, The Word Queen xx

Psychic Medium Energy Healer

This month has been challenging. The secret is to recognise the signs, learn from your actions and be true to yourself. When we are in the right and feel the need to shout about it, stop and think: does it really matter? There are ways of handling a situation with strength and wisdom instead. Insisting that we’re right only sends negativity to everyone involved. I have learned not to retaliate, or get involved in anyone else's fear and anger. Now I just step back, still my mind and let go of that negative energy. By doing nothing, you actually do everything. You then find yourself operating from a new energy, feeling happier and wiser, because you have found the key to your path to happiness. My aim is always to help people, so three years after I was first asked to start a healing circle, I recently decided the time was right. I wanted to make it really magical, so it was vital to find a venue where the energy was right. I finally settled on the Tamisa Golf, which is perfect. In the circle we share our goals and happiness by empowering ourselves, all at the same time. I also offer healing, not just for the people there, but their friends and loved ones too -anyone who needs it, in fact – including animals. My intention is to make these evenings enlightening and deeply spiritual, bringing in some amazing people to share their gifts and experiences, helping us all gain a deeper understanding about ourselves. The first circle was amazing, and the 46 people there all felt the power of spirit in our room. Good news emails flooded in afterwards from people saying how much more positive they were feeling. The second evening circle was hosted by a dear friend of mine, Julie Chimes, a best-selling author and a truly inspirational lady. The word had spread and 56 people turned up. The night was perfect: magical and amazing. We don't judge, but just sit in peace, which allows healing to take place. The ‘how’ and the ‘why’aren’t important – it’s the after-effect that counts. The circle will take place twice monthly on a Thursday evening at the Tamisa Golf Hotel on the Camino Viejo de Coin, 3.3km. (Tel 952 585 988). If you would like to join us, please contact for details and full directions. On the door we ask for 8€ towards the hotel bill and to pay the hosts. See my website for all upcoming dates for our circle. or Facebook ‘Mark Bajerski events.’

S & G Legal - Your Law Firm

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves: we are the Law firm ‘S & G LEGALS, S.L’, and we would also like to tell you about some of our beliefs.

We also consider that our work really consists of doing our best to protect the interests of each of our clients, trying to get the best, fastest and most economical solution for them.

We know that life is complex and not straightforward, and on many occasions, the best solution can only be given by a barrister whose knowledge of law can help clients in all the possible legal situations they are likely to have to face.

On the other hand, we believe that the confidence of our clients is vital for our work, and communication is a priority. For this reason, every client is kept constantly informed about the progress of their file, in order that they really understand the meaning of all the necessary procedures, as well as the final outcome.

For this reason, the Law firm ‘S & G LEGALS’ consists of a group of Spanish lawyers who have studied and learned through experience how to offer legal assistance in all areas of Spanish Law. We are a team and for this reason, every one of our clients can feel that all the lawyers of the firm are working jointly for them. Our clients hire all the lawyers of ‘S & G LEGAL’ – not just one.

Finally, as we also believe that confidence is built through everyday work, we would like to have the honour of showing you how we operate our business. We look forward to meeting you. Kind regards, From all the lawyers of S & G LEGAL

Benamocarra rants where you can sit and chat to the locals or just enjoy good food and drink. This month we take a look at 2 villages, Cajiz & Caleta. Staying in alphabetical order we first visit Cajiz, a small village situated just 27 kilometres from Malaga and 5 kilometres from the coast. This village is the first one you go past on the way up the hill to the larger village of Iznate and is often bypassed without a second glance. On taking time out to discover the place I wondered at the eclectic style of housing which ranges from poor ruins in desperate need of reforming to grand modern structures towering over the modest square. Even the 18th century parish church of San José is tucked away amongst trees and ruins and looks as if no-one has painted or cared for it in many a year! This village, like many in the area, is steep with little dead end streets culminating in a mass of colour with flowering pots outside closed front doors with little dogs lying stretched out in the shade. One street has its name rather quaintly hand painted on a wall. There are a couple of good bars and restau-

Caleta de Vélez is a small coastal resort situated next to Torre del Mar, approximately 30 klms from Malaga. This Caleta, or Bay, of Velez has a lovely stretch of beach and a small fishing port which has grown in recent years and is now home to some luxury yachts which can be hired from this busy Marina. Take time out after eating in one of the many restaurants to throw some bread to the fish and watch them all come jumping up to grab a piece!

To get to the much busier town of Torre del Mar you can stroll along the beach, roller blade or cycle down the paseo de maritimo or even swim! By Sally Harrision Axarquia Properties

Random Jokes :) It's late autumn and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But, being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the phone box, called the National Weather Centre and asked, 'Is the coming winter going to be cold?' 'It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,' the meteorologist at the weather centre responded. So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later, he called the National Weather Centre again. 'Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?' 'Yes,' the man at National Weather Centre

again replied, 'It's going to be a very cold winter.' The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later, the chief called the National Weather Centre again. 'Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?' 'Absolutely,' the man replied. 'It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we've ever seen.' 'How can you be so sure?' the chief asked. The weatherman replied, 'The Indians are collecting a s***load of firewood.' ------------------------------------------------------------I dialled a number and got the following recording: "I am not available right now, but thank you for caring enough to call. I am making some changes in my life. Please leave a message after the beep. If I do not return your call, you are one of the changes." ------------------------------------------------------------My wife and I had words, but I didn't get to use mine!!!

Name: Felicity Ann Kendal Birthday: 25 September 1946 age: 65 Sign: Libra Birthplace: Warwickshire Marital Status: Married twice Children: 2 Occupation: Actress Claim to fame: Probably best known for being Barbara Good in the 1970s TV series The Good Life Actress Felicity Kendal, CBE, is known and respected for her television and extensive stage work, but is perhaps best remembered for her starring role as Barbara Good in the 1970s TV series The Good Life, alongside Richard Briers, Paul Eddington and Penelope Keith. Her most recent TV series was ‘Rosemary and Thyme’ in which she played garden-loving amateur detective Rosemary Boxer, starring with her great friend, Pam Ferris. Felicity was born in Warwickshire but spent much of her childhood in India, where her father managed a touring repertory company. She was educated at six convents in India. Her father had adopted his

own birthplace of Kendal, (then Westmorland now Cumbria), as his stage name. His original surname was Bragg, and he was a distant relative of author and TV personality Melvyn Bragg. Felicity made her stage debut aged nine months, when she was carried on stage as a changeling boy in ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream.’ Family friends James Ivory and Ismail Merchant fashioned their fictional film Shakespeare-Wallah (1965) around the Kendal troupe and gave Felicity the leading role. She was 19. She won the Variety Club’s ‘most promising newcomer’ award in 1976 and ‘best actress’ in 1979. In 1981, she won the ‘Rear of the Year’ award. Other winners include Barbara Windsor, Elaine Page, Michael Barrymore, Ulrika Johnson, Ronan Keating, Russell Watson and Robbie Williams. At the age of 55, she still made it on to a list of ‘Top Ten TV Sex Bombs’ compiled by Channel 4. When she was 21, Felicity returned to Britain against her father's wishes and made her stage debut in Minor Murder. She was made a CBE in 1995. Felicity competed in the eighth series of BBC1's ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ last year, partnered with Vincent Simone; the couple lasted eight weeks and danced at Blackpool. Angelina Jolie's exhusband, the maverick, much-tattooed American actor Billy Bob Thornton, admitted to a major ‘Felicity fetish’, based on her "amazing" voice. She confessed in her autobiography ‘White Cargo’ that she was able to flirt her way into almost any pair of arms she wanted She has a mauve-pink sweet pea named after her. Although known worldwise as the ‘blonde next door’, her hair colour is not natural. When she returned to England, she found herself cast in Asian parts, because of her tanned skin and dark hair.

The Cabbage Patch Our new veggie patch in Mezquitilla is positively thriving ever since we replanted at the beginning of September! Everything seems to be growing more and more succulent by the day, apart from the cucumbers which have gone a bit crazy and are infested with some mysterious breed of insect. The leaves have all turned a manky yellow colour which is off putting to say the least.

Kami and Tony found a couple of chairs by a skip in the street so at least we now have somewhere to sit when we’re watering. I quite enjoy basking in the sun with a book…when there’s no weeding to do of course! Other news is that Tony has been particularly enjoying the chilli peppers, quote: "They're hot enough to blow your head off! Time for loo roll in the freezer!!!”

I’ve spotted many more creepy crawlies since moving plot from Velez to the current location. Recently, as we were busy planting, weeding and picking we found a cluster of hideous black beetles housed under a lettuce. I’ve also seen crickets, spiders, ants (of course) and one day, to my utter horror, a cockroach!

Finally, the harvest so far Chillis, Lettuce, Rocket, Basil, Mint and last but certainly not least, is our first magical cucumber, see picture! Let the munching begin!!! If growing your own veggies is a dream you’ve always had, then give José a call today! 639 120 707

Please mention The Sentinella when responding to adverts brings Hollowface to life and her nightmares soon become terrifyingly real.

Film iew Revruders int

Creepy and atmospheric, this well written and directed psychological thriller is heightened by strong performances from Clive Owen and Ella Purnell. However, it's let down by predictability and pacing problems. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (Intacto, 28 Weeks Later), Intruders stars Clive Owen as John, a construction engineer married to Susanna (Carice Van Houten), whose 11-yearold daughter, Mia (Ella Purnell) has horrific nightmares involving a hooded demon, known as Hollowface, after she finds a handwritten story hidden inside a tree at her grandparents’ house. After Mia reads it to her classmates, she

Meanwhile, in Madrid, the same thing happens to Juan (Izan Corchero), forcing his mother (Pilar López de Ayala) to seek the help of a kindly local priest Father Antonio (Daniel Brühl). As the two stories unfold, Father Antonio considers exorcism for Juan, while John and Susanna seek the help of a child psychologist (Kerry Fox). But her findings have unexpected repercussions for the family.. The cleverly constructed script taps into some effectively nightmarish primal fears, particularly when Hollowface appears to steal Mia’s voice. The film also explores interesting ideas about the power of storytelling and imagination. The main problem with the film is that it drags in the middle in an attempt to delay a final act reveal that isn't particularly clever or shocking. Star Rating ***/*****

you just wish to wait and watch me work, you can. This area has tea and coffee making facilities and a small selection of soft drinks. Now that summer has passed and winter is on the way, is there anything we should do?

With more than 24 years experience, Simon Allen is waiting to meet your motoring needs. In an interview with Simon, he talks about how the workshop on the Poligono La PaĂąoleta industrial estate, in Velez Malaga, is going now that it has been open for six months. So, Simon, how is business going? It was slow to start with, but now that word is starting to spread that I am here, it is getting busier by the day. I also now have a waiting area, so if your car is only in for a small job or

After the heat of the summer, the cars have worked hard keeping cool so it would be a good idea to get the antifreeze checked out. Also have the brakes cleaned and checked, as when the rains start, the brakes will be having to work harder. It would also be advisable to get the brake fluid changed if it hasn’t been done for two years or more, as it can become contaminated. Getting your battery and alternator checked as well would be good, as now it gets dark earlier, you need your lights working correctly. Whatever your motoring requirements, I will be here to attend to them. See advert on page 23

The Recession Hits The United States The recession has hit the US really hard... My neighbour got a pre-declined credit card in the mail. Wives are having sex with their husbands because they can't afford batteries.

Parents in Beverley Hills fired their nannies and learned their own children's names. My cousin had an exorcism but couldn't afford to pay for it, and they re-possessed her! A truckload of Americans were caught sneaking into Mexico.

CEO's are now playing miniature golf.

A picture is now only worth 200 words.

A stripper was killed when her audience showered her with rolls of pennies while she danced.

When Bill and Hillary travel together, they now have to share a room. The Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas is now managed by Somali pirates.

I saw a Mormon with only one wife. If the bank returns your cheque marked "Insufficient Funds," you call them and ask if they meant you or them. McDonald's is selling the 1/4 ouncer. Angelina Jolie adopted a child from America.

And, finally... I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Hotline. I got a call centre in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

BEM idiomas Time is flying by, but why is this? Maybe because I am getting older, or maybe because my five year anniversary is approaching in February next year – five years of living in Spain. Wow five years! I still think I should be able to speak Spanish much better than I do now, but then I look around me at the many British people who have lived here longer than me, who don’t work full time, don’t have young children, don’t take lessons and so have all the time in the world to spare a couple of hours for sessions each week -- but choose not to. So then I think again, and I tell myself how remarkably well I am doing. I am really going for it at the moment. In the house I try to talk some Spanish every day. Of course I still have my lessons at BEM in Velez Malaga as without them I would know nothing! I now also attend a conversation class for one hour a week with other foreign mothers from my daughter’s school and whenever I can, I have a coffee with my best Spanish friend, who helps me more. Mind, Body & Spirit Why are we fat? Reasons for weight-gain Following last month’s article on weight-loss, it might be helpful to explore some of the reasons why we put on excess weight in the first place, and examine the popular theories. These vary depending on whether we are talking about ourselves: “It’s hormonal imbalance;” “It’s genetic;” “It’s my lifestyle - I’m too busy to eat sensibly” or, referring to someone else: “They eat too much;” “They never take any exercise;” “They eat too much sweet stuff and fatty food.” Setting aside the glaring fundamental attribution error (the psychological mechanism by which we attribute our own problems to outside causes and other people’s problems to internal causes), there is some truth in these explanations. There are genetic “types” which are more predisposed to weight-gain than others, and it is a fact that overweight parents are more likely to rear overweight children. However, as in all apparently genetically-determined conditions, the crucial factor is not the genes per se, but the way the mind-body “reads” the genetic programme. This is influenced by mental and emotional factors in an individual. On the other hand, the tendency to be overweight, or even obese, can be passed on from parents to offspring in other ways. Children of obese parents are likely to be growing up in an environment in which being overweight is the norm, with ready availability of high-calorie foods and a parental role model of regular over-eating. The plain and simple truth is that we put on excess weight because we eat too much; ie we take in more calories than we use for our me-

tabolism. The question is: why? Few, if any of us, really want to be fat. On the contrary, obesity is a source of enormous stress and distress for the individual. Neither is it a deliberate choice and blame, whether directed towards ones-self or others, is as uncalled for as it is unhelpful. In many cases where excessive weight gain begins early in life, it can be in response to an emotionally hostile home environment such as an angry, overly-critical or even violent parent. The child’s need for self- protection is unconsciously played out by becoming literally bigger: the extra fat serving as a defensive layer, insulating the sensitive ‘inside’ being from the onslaught. Similarly, girls going through puberty may unconsciously gain weight in order to stave off the unwanted and sometimes threatening attention their newly-developed body receives from the opposite sex, by making themselves less attractive. In adulthood too, overeating is a common response to emotional distress - a family crisis, the break-up of a relationship, a bereavement or loss of one’s job. Comfort eating, – consuming foods with high sugar or fat content, often to excess – floods the body with endorphins. These “pleasure molecules” temporarily mask the biochemical signals of the distress. Once the behavioural pattern is set, it becomes hard to break. For more on this subject, and for information on a safe, rapid and effective approach to weight-loss, please refer to my website at or see his advert below:

Readers Writes WARNING On 7th October at the coffee bar near to the pet shop in Eroski shopping centre an elderly lady sitting at one of the outer tables had her handbag snatched away by a young child of around 10 years of age and ran off into the car park and disappeared. Please be warned and take care. "While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it. For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the Police and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the Police advised even before they went out there to check.... "There are several things to be aware of ... gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women) to stop their vehicle and get out of the car. "There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police where gangs are placing a car seat by the

road...with a fake baby in it...waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby. "Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a wooded or grassy (field) area and the person -- woman -- will be dragged into the woods and attacked. If it's a man, they're usually beaten and robbed. Do not stop for any reason!!! dial the police and report what you saw, but don't even slow down. "if you are driving at night and eggs are thrown at your windscreen, do not stop to check the car, do not operate the wiper and do not spray any water because eggs mixed with water become milky and block your vision up to 92.5%, and you are then forced to stop beside the road and become a victim of these criminals. this is a new technique used by gangs, so please inform your friends and relatives. these are desperate times and these are unsavoury individuals who will take desperate measures to get what they want." Please talk to your loved ones about this. This is a new tactic used. Please be safe. Get started NOW

) : a h a h s e k o J A man and his wife were awakened at 3:00 am by a loud pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, is asking for a push. "Not a chance," says the husband, "it is 3 in the morning!" He slams the door and returns to bed. "Who was that?" asked his wife.. "Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers. "Did you help him?" she asks. "No, I did not, it’s 3 in the morning and it’s bloody pouring rain out there!" "Well, you have a short memory," says his wife. "Can't you remember about three months ago when we broke down, and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself! God loves drunk people too you know.” The man does as he is told, gets dressed, and goes out into the pounding rain. He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there?" "Yes," comes back the answer. "Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband. "Yes, please!" comes the reply from the dark. "Where are you?" asks the husband. "Over here on the swing," replies the drunk! ------------------------------------------------------------A lady walks into Harrods. She looks around, spots a beautiful diamond bracelet and walks over to inspect it. As she bends over to look more closely, she unexpectedly farts. Very embarrassed, she looks around nervously to see if anyone noticed her little woops and prays that a sales person was not anywhere near. As she turns around, her worst nightmare materialises in the form of a salesman standing right behind her - Good looking as well. Cool as a cucumber, he displays all of the qualities one would expect of a professional in a store like Harrods. He politely greets the lady with, 'Good day, Madam. How may we help you today? Blushing and uncomfortable, but still hoping that the salesman somehow missed her little 'incident', she asks, 'what is the price of this lovely bracelet?' He answers, "Madam - if you farted just looking at it - you're going to s*** yourself when I

tell you the price!" ------------------------------------------------------------This man is sitting at home alone when he hears a knock on the front door. There are two policemen there. He asks if there is a problem. One of the policemen asks if he is married, and if so, can he see a picture of his wife. The man says "sure " and shows him a picture of his wife. The policeman says, "I'm sorry sir, but it looks like your wife's been hit by a lorry." The man says, "I know, but she has a great personality and is an excellent cook." ------------------------------------------------------------Eileen and her husband John went for counselling after 25 years of marriage. When asked what the problem was, Eileen went into a passionate, painful tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the 25 years they had been married. She went on and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured over the course of their marriage. Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking Eileen to stand, embraced her, unbuttoned her blouse and bra, put his hands on her breasts and massaged them thoroughly, while kissing her passionately as her husband John watched with a raised eyebrow! Eileen shut up, buttoned up her blouse, and quietly sat down while basking in the glow of being highly aroused. The therapist turned to John and said, 'This is what your wife needs at least three times a week.. Can you do this?' John thought for a moment and replied, 'Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I play golf. ------------------------------------------------------------Two women were having lunch together, and discussing the merits of cosmetic surgery. The first woman said, “I need to be honest with you, I’m getting a boob job.” The second woman responded, “Oh, that’s nothing. I’m thinking of having my a****** bleached!” “Whoa,” replied the first woman. “I just can’t picture your husband as a blonde!”

Jokes h a h a :) Wife’s Diary: Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, 'Nothing.' I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behaviour I don't know why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.' When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV... He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep, I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster. Husband's Diary: A four putt; who the hell four putts? ------------------------------------------------------------One evening last week, my wife and I were getting into bed. Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says "I don't feel like it, I just want you to hold me." I said "WHAT????!!! What was that?!" So she says the words that every husband on the planet dreads to hear..."You're just not in touch with my emotional needs as a woman enough for me to satisfy your physical needs as a man." She responded to my puzzled look by saying, "Can't you just love me for who I am and not what I do for you in the bedroom?" Realising that nothing was going to happen that night, I went to sleep. The very next day I opted to take the day off work to spend time with her. We went out to a

nice lunch and then went shopping at a big, big unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on several different very expensive outfits. She couldn't decide which one to take so I told her we'll just buy them all. She wanted new shoes to compliment her new clothes, so I said lets get a pair for each outfit. We went onto the jewellery department where she picked out a pair of diamond earrings. Let me tell you...she was so excited. She must have thought I was one wave short of a shipwreck. I started to think she was testing me because she asked for a tennis bracelet when she doesn't even know how to play tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I said, "That's fine, honey." She was almost nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement. Smiling with excited anticipation she finally said, "I think this is all dear, let's go to the cashier." I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, "No honey, I don't feel like it." Her face just went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a baffled "WHAT???!!!" I then said, "Really honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You're just not in touch with my financial needs as a man enough for me to satisfy your shopping needs as a woman." And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, "Why can't you just love me for who I am and not for the things I buy you?" Apparently I'm not having sex tonight either. ------------------------------------------------------------A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where first pig was trying to gather the building materials for his home. She read. 'And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said: 'Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?' The teacher paused then asked the class: 'And what do you think the man said?' One little boy raised his hand and said very matter-of-factly...'I think the man would have said - 'Well, F*** me!! A talking pig!' The teacher had to leave the room.
