I’ve lived in Spain for a little more than nine years and in that time I’ve seen many changes, with local businesses, people moving back and forth from the UK and the ‘climate’ both in terms of the weather and the economic kind! And after nine years, I’ve finally got itchy feet and have decided that I’d prefer to now live elsewhere. It’s a hard decision to make in some respects. After all, my lovely parents live here, along with other close family members. However, on the other hand, I feel that there are more opportunities to further my career and entrepreneurial tendencies in the USA. So, I’m leaving sunny España at the end of May and while I’m not sure how long I’ll be allowed to stay in the US for until I touch down in New York, where my adventure begins with attending the Book Expo America, I’m hoping I can stay for at least six months. My boyfriend lives in the US too, so there’s a chance that I may even apply for a visa extension, only granted in very special circumstances! I love it when my life is colourful and exciting. There’s something incredibly adventurous and freeing about not knowing what’s around the corner. And I relish change, in all its shapes and forms.

Whatever happens I’ll probably return to Spain in November to celebrate the birth of a couple of babies who are close to my heart. Until then, I’ll still be tapping away on my keyboard each month to get this editorial written for The Sentinella. For much of the remaining time I’ll be seriously marketing and promoting my book, The Light: A Book of Wisdom, which has already sold more than 2000 copies within four months.

Strange News Dog Days Each morning, like clockwork, they board the subway, off to begin their daily r o u t i n e amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. But these aren't just any daily commuters. These are stray dogs which live in the outskirts of Moscow, Russia, and commute on the underground trains to and from the city centre in search of food scraps. Then after a hard day scavenging and begging on the streets, they hop back on the train and return to the suburbs where they spend the night. Experts studying the dogs, who usually choose the quietest carriages at the front and back of the train, say they even work together to make sure they get off at the right stop – after learning to judge the length of time they need to spend on the train. stuck Fast - An Austrian doctor stuck acupuncture pins in a patient - and then locked up and went home after forgetting she was there. The doctor at the surgery at W i e n e r Neustadt was in the middle of treating patient Vivi Ziegler, 61, when he had a phone call. He was distracted by the call and then after it finished, he had a question from an assistant and then completely forgot about the patient covered in pins in the surgery. Ms Ziegler said: "I wasn't worried as it was warm and relaxing and I fell asleep, but when I woke up it was dark and cold and I was only partially dressed." When the woman called for help and realised that no one was coming, she managed to find her mobile phone and called police, who rescued her through a window. When contacted by the police, the doctor apologised and promised to give the woman acupuncture treatment for life from now on free of charge.

De Cotta Law Don’t ever ignore a request to appear in court Even if you are a witness or victim, and not the defendant, a request to appear in court must be complied with, as explained by De Cotta Law…. Most people associate an arrest at the airport with criminal activity and think this could never happen to them. However, ignoring a request to appear in the Spanish courts whether as victim, witness or defendant can have unexpected repercussions. Proceedings that may have been archived many years ago may still be ‘on the roll’ and there may be an outstanding warrant issued by a judge who wished to hear evidence from you in a preliminary criminal investigation. Alternatively, you may have been accused of something and been absolved in the proceedings, but if the court were unable to notify you at a current address there may still be a ‘live warrant’ and on swiping your passport, this can come up. There have been recent examples, such as that of a couple who received payment in false notes more than three years ago but as the case was still open, and they had not attended to make their statements, the judge had issued a warrant. In this case it was more like a subpoena or witness summons, so their details came up at the airport. Mistaken identity can also cause problems, for example where you share your name with someone who appeared in previous proceedings. The most important thing is to ensure that if you are requested to appear before the Spanish court you take legal advice and make sure, normally through your lawyer, that you advise the court of your future address and contact details. If there is an arrest or detention at the airport or borders, you always have the benefit of a legal aid lawyer. You can name a private lawyer to act for you but you may have to reimburse the legal aid lawyer for any work they have undertaken on your behalf. In more serious proceedings, the European arrest warrants are very valuable in locating and stopping criminals within Europe. For example with a serious offence, an extradition proceeding can be started, let’s say, in Germany

against an English national who is wanted for trial in Spain. This shows the scope of these arrest warrants. The above applies to criminal proceedings only, but ignoring a civil proceeding can also prove costly. This is because a decision can be made in your absence and the implications in interest and fees can be costly. Other than in minor criminal offences where you can defend yourself, it is always necessary to appoint a lawyer and court procurator in Spain. You can ask for legal aid and you will be asked to show evidence of your financial standing. De Cotta Law is a team of British lawyers and Spanish abogados. The firm’s Spanish lawyers are experts in criminal law and litigation. For information or to discuss your legal questions during a private consultation please contact Sandra Wrightson: De Cotta Law (De Cotta McKenna y Santafé) C/Diputación 11, 29780, Nerja (Malága), Spain Tel: +34 952 527 014 Fax: +34 952 523 428

The Tax System Explained In Beer Suppose that once a week, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to £100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this. The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay £1. The sixth would pay £3. The seventh would pay £7. The eighth would pay £12. The ninth would pay £18 And the tenth man (the richest) would pay £59. So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every week and seemed quite happy with the arrangement until, one day, the owner caused them a little problem. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your weekly beer by £20.” Drinks for the ten men would now cost just £80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free but what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the £20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realised that £20 divided by six is £3.33 but if they subtracted that from everybody's share then not only would the first four men still be drinking for free but the fifth and sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fairer to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage. They decided to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay. And so, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (a 100% saving). The sixth man now paid £2 instead of £3 (a 33% saving). The seventh man now paid £5 instead of £7 (a 28% saving). The eighth man now paid £9 instead of £12 (a 25% saving). The ninth man now paid £14 instead of £18 (a 22% saving). And the tenth man now paid £49 instead of £59 (a 16% saving). Each of the last six was better off than before with the first four continuing to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got £1 out of the £20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, "but he got £10". "Yes, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved £1 too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me"

"That's true" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get £10 back, when I only got £2? The wealthy get all the breaks". "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "We didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor". The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next week the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important - they didn't have enough money between all of them to pay for even half of the bill. And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy and they just might not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier. David R. Kamerschen, Ph.D. Professor of Economics. For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible!

This tiny country, composed of a mainland portion plus five inhabited islands, is one of the smallest on the African continent. Few people have benefited from the oil riches and the country ranks near the bottom of the UN human development index. The UN says that less than half the population has access to clean drinking water and that 20 percent of children die before reaching five. After independence in 1968, Equatorial Guinea fell under the rule of Francisco MacĂas Nguema, who plunged the nation into ruin. He was overthrown and executed in 1979. President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo continues the dictatorship, and there is widespread civil unrest over flawed elections. Very Clever Things to make you think..! They say football is a game of two halves. Not for me it isn't. I regularly down eight or nine pints whilst watching a live game on Sky TV in my local. If smoking is bad for you, how come it cures Salmon? Why does Frank Bruno get a gong just because he's good at hitting people? I'm brilliant at it but the most I've ever got is 200 hours community service. They say good manners cost you nothing. B*llocks. I sent my daughter to finishing school and it cost me twenty bloody grand. These so-called speed bumps are a joke. If anything, they slow you down. It is said that gentlemen prefer blondes. I hope then that lesbians prefer brunettes, otherwise we might have to organise some kind of rota system.

A woman whose daughter was hospitalised in a US tornado told ITV News that 'God would make her better.' presumably, that's a different God from the one that almost killed her with a tornado. I heard on the news that the January storms had cost this country a billion pounds. What an utter waste of money. If anything, they did more harm than good. WHY DON'T NHS bosses start hiring obsessive compulsives as nurses? Their attention to hygiene and constant hand washing would see an end to MRSA outbreaks in no time. ‘Alton Towers - Where the magic never ends', or so the commercial says. Imagine my disappointment when it closed at 7.30. Please can you help me? I can't seem to think of another purpose for multi-purpose compost, other than for growing plants in. If it's true what they say, 'Once you pop, you can't stop', why are Pringles tubes re-sealable?

Sitter’s Digest Here we start a new section from an old book from Sitter’s Digest entitled ‘Laughs in the smallest room’ . The book cost 5 old shillings. Just good clean, old fashioned titilating fun from the fifties - Enjoy! A young bull and an old bull were grazing together on the top of the hill, when suddenly the young bull noticed some cows down in the valley. He excitedly said to the old bull, “Hey! Look at all those cows down there. Let’s run down and make love to a few of them!” “No son” replied the elder, “Let’s walk down and make love to all of them!” ------------------------------------------------------------Wife: “you go out every night. I really believe if you spent a night at home, I would die.” Hubby: “You can’t bribe me!”

“I’ve noticed it too... after she’s out of the water a couple of hours she starts to smell.” ------------------------------------------------------------An oversexed lady named White Insists on two dozen a night A fellow named Cheddar Had the brashness to wed her His chances of survival is slight.

At Essere-yoga this month we are offering a special discount in our ergonomic chair express massage. 15 minutes of decompression through the clothes: neck, head, shoulders, back, arms and hands. A moment of pure relaxation. You will be energised. This massage has its origins in traditional Chinese massage, the “Amma”, which means “calm with the hands”. Inspired by Shiatsu, it is a massage that uses pressure on the precise acupuncture points, which are situated on the path of the meridians, the energy channels that run through our body. It gives you a quick, efficient and pleasant “break”. Its principal effect is “decompression”: in 15 minutes, harmful stress dissipates, muscular tensions subside, energy circulates… Also available: 15 minute massage express, reflexology, leg massage, thai yoga or craniosacral. Just call us and make an appointment and we’ll come to your hotel or apartment. Beer Corner Craft Beers in Spain Until recently, the concept of ''Craft beers'' was largely unknown in Spain; there were few producers and even fewer consumers. However, as with other food and drink, as we see in the "slow food" movement, consumers are increasingly looking for new tastes and experiences and craft beers are part of the new trend. There is a strong and steady growth in the production of craft beers in Andalucía and the rest of Spain. Nowadays, in Spain, there are 150 small producers or micro breweries, and at least 300 different brands. Most of the breweries are located in Catalonia and the Region of Valencia. In recent years, the number has grown in Andalucía which now ranks third (it is possible to find breweries in almost all provinces of the region), followed by Galicia and Madrid. The ''beer culture'' has been growing across Spain, increasing demand for high-quality, lo-

cally brewed beers. This has gone together with growing small-scale production which supports sustainable rural development and the local economy in many forms (through small farmers, craft producers, local distribution networks, specialised shops, …). Given the small size of their businesses distribution can be a major headache for small craft breweries. It is difficult to get the good access to markets needed to expand beer production beyond their own local environment. A big marketing effort is therefore needed in order to raise awareness of Spain's craft beers, especially outside the traditional or original places of distribution. This is the main aim of La domadora y el león, Craft Beer Store, a shop specialising in craft beers from Spain and from all over the world that opened recently in Nerja (Malaga). You are all kindly invited to come and visit us! See main advert on page 53

It is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and it is recorded as two figures. - systolic pressure: the pressure of the blood when your heart pushes blood out - Diastolic pressure: the pressure of the blood when your heart rests in between beats For example, if your GP says your blood pressure is “140 over 90” or 140/90mmHg, anything under 130/80mmHg is generally considered normal. You are said to have high blood pressure if readings on separate occasions consistently show your blood pressure to be 140/90mmHg or higher. If you have kidney disease, diabetes or a condition that affects your heart and circulation, your target blood pressure should be below 130/80mmHg. Visit your GP as soon as possible if you find that you have any of these symptoms. In the final month of Blood Pressure we look at the treatment itself.

Thermography – Women’s other choice to Mammography Your Mobile Medical Thermal Imaging Clinic on the Costa del Sol For years it has been accepted that mammography for breast cancer detection is ineffective. Thousands of women get false positive results from mammograms. That means unnecessary biopsies, surgeries and other treatments. Also, many women will be over-diagnosed and treated for cancers that are not life threatening. Unlike other tests, thermal imaging is not painful, it's non-invasive and quick — your multi-image examinations usually take less than 15 minutes. Plus, it makes no contact with your body — no compression and it emits absolutely NO radiation. Janet van Dam LCH is a fully qualified Medical Thermographer, registered with the ACCT (American College of Clinical Thermography), who has been educating and screening women in Southern Spain, Mallorca and the UK for the last 3 years. Homemade Mosquito Trap

Fish & Chip Challenge

Have you noticed the Mosquitos are already out! Here is a homemade trap to help keep you and the kiddos from being a blood dono...r!!!

Do you like a challenge? Do you like food? And more to the point, do you like good old English fish and chips? If so, then The Town Frier in Puente Don Manuel is organising a BIG FISH CHALLENGE.

items needed: * 1 cup of water *1/4 cup of brown sugar * 1 gram of yeast *1 or 2 litre bottle Method: 1. Cut the plastic bottle in half. 2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle. 3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes. 4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired. 5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the colour black.) Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control and that should keep the pests at bay !

To celebrate their first anniversary on Saturday 22nd June, The Town Frier is offering all clients, old and new, the chance to try and eat the following in half an hour or less! -32oz cod -2kg chips -½ kilo of mushy peas -1 bread and butter -Washed down with a bottle of water The cost is just 11€ per meal and if you manage the challenge, then not only will you receive your meal FREE, but you will also win 25€ in cash. So, if you are feeling hungry on 22nd June and fancy winning some cash too, then pop along to The Town Frier and chomp, chomp, chomp! See advert opposite.

Your Pet & The Law Welcome to our new feature bought to us by Tina from Happy Hounds. As a follow-up from last month, here are some of the requirements laid down in the animal rights law of 2003 concerning treatment of pets. Since these laws came into effect, there has been some improvement in the way people treat their animals in the Costa Del Sol, but unfortunately, old stereotypes die hard and animal mistreatment is still a part of life in our corner of the world. Animals are still being mistreated and abandoned. Obligations - Owners of animals must: Keep their animals in good hygienic sanitary conditions with proper shelter. Provide food, water, exercise, vaccinations and treatment for the health of the animal. Microchip at three months of age. Keep dogs on a lead in public places. Dispose of excrement left by their animals in public places. Prohibitions - Fines 1. Maltreatment or physical abuse of animals 75 – 30,000€ 2. Abandonment of an animal 2,000 – 30,000€

lead displays aggressive behaviour towards you. It is important to note that a dog does not have to bite someone to be deemed dangerous. The town hall also has a department which covers hunting and stray animals in the campo. You can be stopped and given a warning for walking your dog without a lead -- even if you are walking on a track. There is plenty of unfenced land in the campo, but this is owned by someone and you can get into trouble for walking there. You might not know that if you have unfenced property, your dog cannot be free on your land. It is only legal for the dog to be free if your land or garden is fenced and gated. If the dog is loose and causing a problem to your neighbours or other animals, you can be reported. The laws are there for the protection of animals and also people. If you have a topic that you would like covered or a specific question please email Tina on:

New Mum in Town - Walking, Talking & Dolphins Well, when they say walking is a whole other ball game they most definitely were not joking! I thought crawling was keeping me fit, but walking is certainly keeping me on my toes and I think I may even be starting to beat the battle of the bulge! Hooray! Jelly belly, get ready to say adios! Little Jazmín is walking all over the place, getting in and out of all sorts of cubby holes and cupboards and chasing the dogs at every possible moment - they seem to take cover when little J is around...I wonder why? There's only so much ear and tail tugging even the most placid dogs can take - bless them, their world is very different. What must they make of it all?? Another change - all ornaments and anything anti-baby has been moved to higher, out of reach levels, so now I can't find anything!

off their skills in the dolphin and sea lion show. There were exotic birds flying so close that I felt the feathers (and the group of girl Brownies watching felt the poop...oops); the penguins’ feeding frenzy was a tad much for little J, though, but the kiddies playpark was a hit. Jazmín certainly tired herself out and was even allowed to gorge on ice-cream...when in Rome and all that! We had a brilliant time, and I particularly loved the full night's sleep that followed...just shows that no siesta and non-stop action is the only way to make a (my) baby sleep all night -- that and a Calpol Soothe and Ease Plugin. Calpol – what a wonderful product! As much as I loved the new-born experience (yes, including the lows), I have to admit, I'm really excited about the fun times ahead with my little toddler, and I'm glad to have my boobs back. I'm no longer Jazmín's walking, human cow!

We have reached the present day and baby girl is now 15 months old. She is starting to blab a few words in Spanglish, but mainly in English. Her favourite thing to tell me is NOOOOO no no no...mmmm, where could she have got that from, I wonder?? Note to self - I must be extra aware of what I say, as little J is imitating everything. I'm especially grateful to Granddad for repeatedly using a naughty word (despite being told off) and baby girl continuously repeating shi...shi...shi...(think you can guess the bad word)! I just correct her with the word fish! Er hem...

It's going to be fun and I predict a lorra lorra laughs (as well as the odd tear and tantrum, claro)... Until next month x

Normality is slowly being restored (by that I mean Mummy), things are beginning to balance out and we have just whisked ourselves away to Marbella for the weekend. EEEK!

SHOWROOM at LAKE VIñUELA In order to give clients individual attention please phone for an appointment before visiting. We are situated at KM29 (on right) off A356 1km past Camping & Pantano Restaurant. We are signposted from there. From bouncy chairs to buggies, stairgates to sterilisers. Everything you need for when little ones come to visit.

The car journey there is a challenge in itself, and there are only so many nursery rhymes an adult can take I'm sure, but we made it and baby girl loved it. Walks in the campo with the poochies, trips to shopping centres that were actually full of people (a different world compared to Almuñecar) and, most exciting of all, we went to the Selwo Marina in Benalmadena. I definitely recommend it to all you families looking for day trips with the kiddies. It's not too big, yet not too small, and there's a good choice of food. Jazmín absolutely loved it and we were both clapping and cheering away at the dolphins as they jumped about and showed

A New Law! A new law comes into force on June 1 requiring all properties for sale or rent to have an energy performance certificate, which must include information on the energy efficiency of the property. The aim is to enable people to assess and compare the properties’ energy efficiency. The certificate must identify the building, including its catastral reference, and show its energy performance. It must also describe the building's energy characteristics such as heating systems, lighting, etc. The certificate is valid for 10 years. Owners will not need a new one unless they renovate or change the property in any way. If the energy certificate is not given to purchasers or tenants, any contract will be considered null and void. Exclusions to this are: 1) Residential buildings with a surface area less than 50m2. 2) Residential buildings which are used or in-

tended to be used for either less than four months of the year or alternatively, for a limited annual time of use and with an expected energy consumption of less than 25% of what would be the result of all-year use. If you are buying a property in Spain, you should be aware that the original energy performance certificate must be handed over to you, and if you are renting, you should be provided with a copy of it. If you are buying, selling, leasing or renting a property in Spain, our firm can advise regarding this or any other legal issue. The information provided in this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues. See main advert below

Salares, is situated on the very edge of the Tejeda National Park and Game reserve at 579 metres above sea level. This white gem of a village is steeped in history and was inhabited by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians. Known as Salaria Bastitanorum by the Romans (due to the salt beds that were once situated close by) the urban design of this tiny village has changed little since Muslim times. Built on a hill and constructed with short, steep streets there is not really a main square as such and you need to be fit to live there, but you can stretch your limbs by using the free outdoor gymnasium equipment before climbing up to the Parish Church of Santa Ana, built in Mudejar style on the site of an ancient mosque. It is quite remarkable, and well worth the climb! The tower minaret from the former mosque was built of red brick sometime between the thirteenth and fourteenth century and was used when the church was constructed in the sixteenth century. This minaret was designated a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 1979 and is considered to be one of the best examples in spain of Almohade art. The Romans occupation of the village has mainly gone unnoticed, apart from the bridge, as Arab rule left its notable mark in the layout

of the village as well as the fortress under which the village was built. It is situated close to the church and one of its towers can still be seen today. Unlike other villages in the area, no lives were lost in the earthquake of 1884 although many buildings were destroyed and the royal commissioner who was in charge of evaluating the damage granted 30,000 pesetas to help the villagers replace their belongings and rebuild their homes. The flattest street is Calle Puente which leads to the Roman bridge that straddles the Rio Salares. There is a little supermarket at the top close to the new restaurant and a bar at the bottom on the main road. There is also a health centre, open a couple of days a week, on days when it is closed villagers have to go on up to the next village of Sedella or to the much larger village of CĂłmpeta. The main fair in the village takes place during September when the cooler weather commences and the entire village dresses up in traditional Moorish clothing for the two day As-Shark or Al-Sarq festival. Dancers and musicians from North Africa dance and play all through the night and are illuminated by torchlight. Other festivals are held on January 17th (San Anton) and June 24th (San Juan) the Feria of Salares is in late July. The best way to get to Salares is via the Mediterranean Autovia A-7 or N-340, turn off at Algarrobo and drive inland up past the village, past the next village of Sayalonga, up towards CĂłmpeta, take the right hand turn to Archez and then turn left at the bridge, drive over the bridge and take the next right turn to Salares. The village is about another 5 minute drive from there. This should take 30 mins from leaving the motorway.

Joke Book

The Light Column

Out now! Yours truely has put together a joke book containing 84 pages of solid jokes & funnies. No pictures, no spaces, just pure unadulterated laughter.

Meditating is one thing. But, in my experience meditating on Love is something else all together. When we meditate on Love, it’s truly beautiful and we’re not only activating the Loving feelings within ourselves, but we’re also projecting those same feelings out to the whole world. The animals feel it. Nature feels it. Mother Earth feels it. The water feels it. The sky and the air feels it. Our friends and family feels it. And the list goes on and on… When we meditate we still our mind and eliminate all thoughts. Or, at least, we try.

Priced at just a fiver and 1€ from every book to APARIV charity, it’s a must buy to keep by the loo! Available at the Trapiche Market on Tuesdays or The Friday market in Puente don Manuel. Alternatively, email: or call Tony: 664 689 138

When we meditate on Love, it’s the same idea, however, as we’re focusing solely on Love, the other thoughts empty by themselves, with no real effort on our part. Instead of thinking no thoughts, we’re actually thinking only loving thoughts. This is much easier to achieve if you have a partner who you love, or even if you have a parent, child or sibling who you love. If you have a partner then try sitting or lying with him / her. Look into each others eyes and be completely present as you focus solely on love and loving. Before long you will begin to feel at One with your partner and at this point you’ve successfully achieved what I call, Loveitation; essentially Love and Meditation combined. Think of it as a new recipe, out now for all to try! The wonderful thing, when we get into this blissful state, is that it’s the ultimate state of allowing, literally paving the way for doors to open and greater abundant and joyful opportunities to flow in to our life. If you are currently single then try sitting or lying down and thinking kind and loving thoughts about someone who you appreciate and love in your life. Remember this person’s attributes and good points, why you love them and why you’re glad that they’re a part of your life. Let those loving feelings escalate and expand as you get deeper and deeper into Loveitation. For me, Loveitation is the ultimate form of meditation, benefiting not only our own lives and the lives of those closest to us, but also the whole world, from the smallest insect to the greatest tree… To read more inspirational articles, go to:

Bums Women’s bum size study There is a new study about women and how they feel about their bums. The results were pretty interesting: 30% of women think their bum is too fat... 10% of women think their bum is too skinny... The remaining 60% say they don't care, they love him, he's a good man, and they wouldn't trade him for the world! -------------------------------------------------------------A couple were in their bedroom and the girl says to her boyfriend, "I wish I had bigger boobies". The boyfriend says "Well what I recommend is to get some toilet tissue and rub it between them for 2 months". "How will that help to make them bigger?" asks the girlfriend. "Well it worked for your bum" says the boyfriend. -------------------------------------------------------------What's the last thing to go through a bug's mind as it hits the windscreen? The word ‘pira’ means fish and ‘sanha’ or ‘ranha’ means ‘tooth’. There are 39 species of piranha.

They can grow up to 30cm in length, weigh up to 3.5kg and live for 25 years. They are sexually mature at 18-24 months, and one female piranha can lay 5000 eggs.

The piranha has a robust, narrow body with a blunt head. The strong jaws have triangularshaped, razor sharp teeth.

Piranhas are omnivores – they eat pretty much anything! They commonly feed on snails,

Their teeth are so sharp, they can bite through a steel fishing hook, and they are also known for having an aggressive appetite for meat and flesh. The collective name for a group of piranhas is ‘school’. Although they eat mammals and birds that fall into the water, the popular myth that they can easily feed on cattle or human bodies in a matter of seconds is not true.

A piranha’s jaw bones can crush a human hand in a matter of 5-10 seconds.

Happy 60th Birthday! Roz

Readers Writes

Took some time to get there, but it's absolutely amazing once you arrived. So many wishes. So many smiles. So many birthdays. So many miles. So many friends So many good times. So many candles isn’t a crime. Happy birthday! Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four?

I would like to sing the praises of Lee Talbot Construction. We have had problems with our septic tank forever and despite visits by ‘drain specialists’ and my own desperate attempts, the problems have persisted. Having seen his adverts and regular articles in

The Sentinella, I rang Lee for advice early one

Monday morning. He was very helpful and said he would visit later that morning – YES the same day!!! Just before mid-day he arrived and set about analysis of the problem. He very quickly noted that the tank had been installed completely wrongly by the original Spanish builder and then told me exactly what he would need to do and gave me a quotation on the spot that was unbelievably reasonable. I said that was fine and ,fearing the worst, asked when he may be able to do the work?

Welcome to the Sixties club! Love Andy

He said he would come back with a couple of guys the next day at 10.00am – YES the next day!!!

11 years experience on the Costa

Needless to say , they did arrive bang on time the next morning and without any breaks, completely reconfigured the connections, replaced a section of collapsed drain and fitted an extended vent pipe that was not even quoted for and were finished by 1.00pm!!!

He then spent some time explaining the functions of the septic tank – fascinating – and how to keep it healthy. Then he asked for less than the quoted price – YES less, so, delighted with the whole service I gladly paid him extra and all parties departed happy. Fantastic that there are still people out there who not only know what they are doing but do as they say , when they say they will. WELL DONE LEE TALBOT and thank you so much. Film iew great Rev the atsby g

If it wasn't a motion picture, then The Great Gatsby would have been a wonderful music video. Luhrmann has all the makings of a great music director - he has his finger on the pulse of current music (Jay Z, Lana Del Rey, Fergie, Will.I.Am on the OST), he's adept with the camera and most importantly, he knows whom to cast. His much-talked-about project based on a literary classic is all dazzle but lacks soul. Luhrmann is a visionary and we know this from his previous works (Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet), but with Gatsby he takes indulgence to the next level. Like a boy let loose in a toy store, he pulls out every possible trick from his book of opulence to create a landscape that

lives up to the lavishness of its material. Beneath the veil of its wealth, power and treachery, the film is a love story. One where the lover lives his present through his past and never lets go. Performances are strictly average, but you can't really blame the cast for looking so morose and sounding out of breath at times. DiCaprio's constant whispering in Mulligan's ears gets a bit creepy towards the end. Mulligan is a pretty face, but here she looks tired, almost as if suffocating underneath all those heavy gowns and embellished dresses. The length and pace of the second half makes watching the film a tedious experience. Yes, it is stylish and there is colour and shimmer in every frame, but as the end credits roll all that you remember are Jay-Z and Lana Del Rey's melodic verses. And that doesn't bode too well for the film's reputation. Star Rating - **/*****

LT Construction Garden Steps Garden steps have a practical use but should also be beautiful and elegant. At best, they act as an inviting conduit, seducing you up or down to whatever is beyond, but at worst, they can actually be dangerous. Badly-designed steps create a psychological barrier, making you feel they are too much of an effort to bother with unless you have no choice There are three main things to remember when designing and building steps: where they are to go; how and from what materials they are built and how they are tied in with any walls, paths or terracing. Where they go will dictate the way you want to move through the garden. Steps, of course, give access to different levels within the garden and make them more usable. You could also arrange each set at an angle or incorporate a twist into the step design. This approach creates an important flow and informality and makes you walk through and use

the whole of the space. Wherever steps go, walls will usually be built too, as the soil on each side will need to be retained to stop the bank from collapsing. Retaining walls are always the first thought when it comes to securing collapsed banks but they can be equally secured and strengthened by incorporating steps into them. Planting up can help soften junctures in the steps by spilling over the edges. We always look for innovative ways in which steps and walls can increase the practicality and usability of the garden. We encourage you to view your garden steps as more than just a boring outdoor staircase, and to approach them from a different angle. Call us today to discuss how we can make your garden both attractive and accessible on: 659 324 586 or visit our website at to see wide-ranging examples of garden steps. Advert below.

The name derives from the frilled edge of the flowers; the verb "to pink" dates from the 14th century and means "to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern." The verb sense of the word "pink" continues to be used today in the name of the hand tool known as pinking shears. The use of the word for the colour "pink" was first recorded in the late 17th century. Pink is commonly used for Valentine's Day and Easter, sometimes referred to as "the colour of love." The pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness and also of the gay community. In Ireland, the support group for

In the West, the phrase "pink-collar worker" refers to people working in fields, or jobs conventionally regarded as "women's work." Cherry blossoms only have a pink colour when they bloom in the springtime. Because of this, pink is the colour most commonly associated with springtime in Japan. A pink lady is an alcoholic drink made with gin and grenadine syrup and may include other ingredients. A “pink squirrel” is made of white creme de cacao, creme de noyaux and cream. Pink gin – a favourite with Naval officers -- is a cocktail made by rinsing a glass with Angostura bitters and then filling with gin. In Thailand, pink is associated with Tuesday. Anyone may wear pink on Tuesdays, and anyone born on a Tuesday may adopt pink as their colour.

Moving Story The story of the portrait of Julie I was emailed by a lady in Idaho USA, who had visited my website, loved my paintings, and requested me to paint a portrait of a young girl, her step-daughter, called Julie. She had gone on to Google searching for portrait painters and had found my web address. I replied that I would be delighted and asked her to send me photographs of Julie. She duly sent me a photograph which was a favourite of her husband, Julie`s father.

I told Adair that the photograph wasn't really clear enough to make a good portrait and did she have another. Adair sent me this photograph which I felt that I could use. I thought the facial close-up would be the best for me. The painting had to be small to go in a very special place. This painting became extremely special to me because of the story of Julie. This little girl had died of leukemia at 12 years old, 31 years ago. I had lost my little grand-daughter Annabel, from brain cancer 10 years ago, at the age of 6 years, and therefore understood how important this painting was, apart from being a gift to Julie's father from Adair, his wife. So I duly bought the appropriate size canvas and started painting. I really worked on the portrait but I could not get a true likeness. I tried and tried, changing this and changing that but it would not come. In exasperation I left that attempt, bought another canvas and started again. Still I couldn't get a good like-

ness. It was as if something was stopping me. I said ´Julie, come to me' but no. I came up with a finished painting but was not at all happy with it so I discarded the second attempt. I couldn't understand it, I have done a lot of portraits and in all of them I got a good likeness at the first attempt. I felt that something was really stopping me. I remember Adair telling me that Julie's Grandmother said after I had sent them a photo of the start of the first painting, could I make her smiling, as she was always smiling. So I decided to change tack. I bought another canvas and drew up and proceeded to paint the portrait of Julie smiling, the smaller image in the photograph. The painting just flowed along brilliantly, had more colour and more life. When it was finished I was very pleased with the result. The conclusion I came to was that Julie came to me and prevented me from doing the serious, wistful portrait. She wanted her father to have a painting of her smiling. To remember her as she always was with a beautiful cheeky grin. I feel very privileged to have been asked to paint this, very important, portrait and to have experienced Julie's influence in the finished painting. Linda Hughes

) : a h a h s e k o J A little old lady went to the grocery store to buy cat food. She picked up three cans and took them to the checkout. The girl at the cash register said, "I'm sorry, but we cannot sell you cat food without proof that you have a cat. A lot of old people buy cat food to eat and the management wants proof that you are buying the cat food for your cat." The little old lady went home, picked up her cat and brought it back to the store. They sold her the cat food. The next day, she tried to buy two cans of dog food. Again, the cashier said, "I'm sorry, but we cannot sell you dog food without proof that you have a dog. A lot of old people buy dog food to eat, but the management wants proof that you are buying the dog food for your dog." So she went home and brought in her dog. She then was able to buy the dog food. The next day she brought in a box with a hole in the lid. The little old lady asked the cashier to stick her finger in the hole. The cashier said, "No, you might have a snake in there." The little old lady assured her that there was nothing in the box that would harm her. So the cashier put her finger into the box and quickly pulled it out. She said to the little old lady, "That smells like s***." The little old lady said, "It is. I want to buy three rolls of toilet paper." ---------------------------------------------------------------Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a police officer sees a car puttering along at 22kph. He says to himself: "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back...wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?" "Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speed-

ing, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers." "Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly...Twenty-two kilometres an hour!" ...the old woman says a bit proudly. The Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that 22 is the highway number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grins and thanks the officer for pointing out her error. "But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask...Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't made a peep this whole time," the officer asks. "Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Highway 199." ---------------------------------------------------------------After a visit to a house of prostitution, a man notices green lumps on his willy. So he goes to the doctors. “That’s serious”, says the doctor. “You know how wrestlers get cauliflower ears?” “Yes”, says the man seriously. “Well”, says the doctor, “You’ve got brothel sprouts.” ---------------------------------------------------------------Bloke from Barnsley with piles asks chemist, "Nah then lad, does tha sell arse cream?" Chemist replies, "Aye, Magnum or Cornetto?” ---------------------------------------------------------------An elderly couple, who were both widowed, had been going out with each other for a long time. Urged on by their friends, they decided it was finally time to get married. Before the wedding, they went out to dinner and had a long conversation regarding how their marriage might work. They discussed finances, living arrangements and so on. Finally, the elderly gentleman decided it was time to broach the subject of their physical relationship. "How do you feel about sex?" he asked, rather tentatively. "I would like it infrequently," she replied. The old gentleman sat quietly for a moment, adjusted his glasses, leaned over towards her and whispered, "Is that one word or two?”

Jokes h a h a :) Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A mobile phone on a bench rings and Scott engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen. "Hello" "Hi Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?" "Yes." "I'm at the shops now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only £2,000, is it OK if I buy it?" "Sure, go ahead if you like it that much." "I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked." "How much?" "£90,000." "OK, but for that price I want it with all the extras." "Great! Oh, and one more thing... I was just talking to Janie and found out that the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking £980,000 for it." "Well, then go ahead and make an offer of £900,000. They'll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra eighty-thousand if it's what you really want." "OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!" "Bye! I love you, too." Scott hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths wide open. He turns and asks, "Anyone know who's phone this is?" ---------------------------------------------------------------Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologise. 'Please allow me to help. I'm a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me’, she told him. 'Oh, no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes,' the man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal posi-

tion, still clasping his hands there at his groin. At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside. She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, 'How does that feel'? He replied; ‘It feels great, but I still think my thumb's broken!’ ---------------------------------------------------------------Police have just released details of a new drug craze that is being carried out in Yorkshire nightclubs. Apparently, Yorkshire club goers have started injecting Ecstasy just above their front teeth. Police say the dangerous practice is called "E by gum." ---------------------------------------------------------------A Yorkshireman takes his cat to the vet. Yorkshireman: "Ayup, lad, I need to talk to thee about me cat." Vet: "Is it a tom?" Yorkshireman: "Nay, I've browt it wi' us."

Saint Stevie the Scouse section Three men, a Scouser, a Manc and a Rasta all in the maternity ward waiting for their partners to give birth. The midwife comes out and congratulates them, they're all fathers of beautiful healthy boys, however unfortunately they've run out of the name tags, and the babies have been mixed up, so if they could each go in and identify their sons from any family resemblance etc. The Manc wants to go first, so in he goes and comes out with a black baby. The Rasta looks a bit confused, "excuse me man", he said, "But don't you think he's likely to be mine?" "Probably", said the Manc, "But one of them in there's a scouser and I'm takin' no chances !!!!!" ------------------------------------------------------------Q: How many Liverpool fans does it take to change a light bulb? Hey Diddle Riddle

1. A man is the owner of a winery who recently passed away. In his will, he left 21 barrels (seven of which are filled with wine, seven of which are half full, and seven of which are empty) to his three sons. However, the wine and barrels must be split so that each son has the same number of full barrels, the same number of half-full barrels, and the same number of empty barrels. Note that there are no measuring devices handy. How can the barrels and wine be evenly divided? 2. The expression, "Six of one, half a dozen of another," is commonly used to indicate that two alternatives are essentially equivalent, because six and a half dozen are equal quantities. But are "six dozen dozendozen" and "a half dozen dozendozen" equal? 3. A man is lying dead in a room. There is a large pile of gold and jewels on the floor, a chandelier attached to the ceiling, and a large open window. What happened? 4. The man who invented it doesn't want it. s e p o c s Horo by Juanita Banana of ARIES: March 21-April 20 A time to break free from work routine and seek better terms. Take this month to be objective before making a final decision. It´s also a time to say goodbye, with regret and possible emotional trauma, to friends who are moving on to pastures new. TAURUS: April 21-May 21 To avoid confusion, use time this month to confront difficulties and clarify situations arising within relationships. Evasion will bring a sense of loss on your path, that can never be recovered. GEMINI: May 22-June 21 Geminis should avoid arguments with loved ones during June and evaluate their emotional lives. Career and ambition need to be balanced whilst taking care of your health by avoiding too much stress.

and professional opportunities. LIBRA: September 23 - October 22 Librans should stand still and take stock this month and take time to assess their goals. This will be aided by intuition, highly developed during most of June, whereby you will understand outcomes which others are unable to perceive. SCORPIO: October 23 - November 21 Surprises and recognition are indicated for Scorpio this month, particularly in travel. Old dreams may come true. Whilst other resources are plentiful, you need to be careful with money. SAGITTARIUS: November 22 December 21 Time for caution in your professional life and to make decisions according to your head and the ability of others, and not your heart. A good time to expand your horizons.

CANCER: June 22-July 22 You will face new aspects that could prove beneficial in economic and business projects. You may struggle for an independence and freedom which will play a part in finding renewed self-esteem and self-determination.

CAPRICORN: December 22 January 20 Avoid confrontation with co-workers over sensitive issues and potential alarming professional news. Avoid signing important documents between the 15th and 21st June. Advanced training and modification of old projects will bring rewards.

LEO: July 23-August 23 During June, Leos should let go of regret and thoughts of revenge or retaliation, and move on to the future as your spiritual strength reaches a high. There will be a boost to your domestic finances and attention required from children.

AQUARIUS: January 21-February 19 Family problems should be handled carefully to avoid crises before they become heavier and more difficult to contain. Allow good friends to help with personal and professional goals.

VIRGO: August 24-September 22 A good time to mix in new circles and attend meetings that are outside of your normal sphere. Hard work and investment begin to pay off and reconciliations are indicated. This June is a lucky month for Virgo in competitions

PISCES: February 20-March 20 Any extra work or professional effort this month will be highly beneficial. Your thoughts and ideas will meet with the approval of others in all capacities and new friendships formed along the way.
