John Herlihy, the vicepresident of Global Ad Operations, told the Digital Landscapes Conference in Ireland that the future of computing was mobile and through the web browser. “In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs,” he told the conference. His comments echo the views of Google chief executive Eric Schmidt. Mr Schmidt has previously announced that the company now considers itself to be “mobile first”. Mr Herlihy continued: “Mobile makes the world’s information universally accessible. Because there’s more information and because it will be hard to sift through it all, that’s why search will become more and more important.
