Safe waterproofing of sheet piling with Elastopack MJ Sheet pile walls have the advantage that ground water level has little or no impact on the installation of the wall. Sheet piling is therefore universally used for creating retaining walls for underground constructions in very wet soils or even in and under water. The only real disadvantage of sheet piling lies in the fact that the locks sometimes remain open due to splaying of the sheet piles or because the piles hit a bolder, coble or dense clay layer which can displace the sheet pile and open the locks. Open locks result invariably in leaks which need to be dealt with. These leaks need to be waterproofed to allow construction to continue and to prevent settlements or soil displacement on adjacent building foundations.

Dear reader,

During construction of an underground parking in Frankfurt am Main in Germany, the main contractor found that, after excavation, the sheet pile wall was leaking in several spots. The leaks were found at locks which were not fully closed and at the point where the sheet pile start and end connected to each other. This joint had been filled with low quality cement grout which did not seal the joint and created a weak joint. Due to the high water pressure created by the nearby Main river, a fast reacting injection resin is needed. Expansive resins can be used for this but require extra care because the expansion of the resin, when injected behind the sheet pile, can open the locks even more. To avoid damage to the weak joint and open locks, Elastopack MJ was selected as the best possible solution. Elastopack MJ is a 2-component injection resins which reacts very quickly in approximately 20 seconds to form a durable flexible gasket in the joint. Elastopack MJ has no expansion in the reaction and is therefore safe to use in sheet pile joints. The excellent flexibility of the resin allows movement in the structure to be absorbed by the cured resin without risk of leaks occurring at a later stage in the construction.

HA Safefoam NF offers new possibilities in PU injections. Recently De Neef introduced HA Safefoam NF, a next generation 1-component, ready to use, precatalysed hydrophilic injection resin. HA Safefoam NF replaces HA Safefoam and HA Sealfoam NF. MDI based, with an expansion rate of 4V, HA Safefoam combines the properties of HA Sealfoam with the safety of MDI based technology. HA Safefoam NF is a hydrophilic resin which means the product needs to

be applied below ground water level. Pre-catalysed with a fixed curing time of two minutes and a half, the resin is very easy to use. The resulting highly flexible foam has very good adhesion, making HA Safefoam ideally suitable for waterproofing moving non structural cracks where the movement is outside the scope of the HA Flex resins. With an expansion limited to 4V, HA Safefoam NF also offers the

applicator a viable injection resin for waterproofing weak masonry or damaged concrete structures without any risk of further damage to the structure due to the expansion rate of the resin. Combining the benefits of a precatalysed 1-component resin, requiring little specialist tools and with a safe expansion rate for masonry, HA Safefoam NF has been used with resounding success for waterproofing masonry structures in subway tunnels where labour time is very limited due to the train schedules.

Gelacryl injections in hot weather De Neef’s range of Gelacryl injection resins is well known throughout the world as one of the benchmark products in the field of curtain grouting and specialist applications such as the GASFAR joint sealing system. Like all chemical reactions, Gelacryl reactions are highly influenced by temperature with the resulting need for adapted formulation of the blend components. While low temperatures slow down the reaction needing, larger quantity of SP200 and TE300 additives, high temperatures significantly increase the reaction speed. This increase in reaction speed can be quite dramatic resulting in construction site difficulties to establish correct and stable blend mixes for the required job specific gel time. In an

ongoing endeavour from De Neef to provide our customers with the best possible user friendly systems, a series of type blends have been established which are easy to use. Although still requiring accurate dosage of the TE300 component, a smaller packaging unit has been provided for the SP200 initiator which can be added using complete packaging units.

A new application bulletin “High Temperature Curtain Grouting” has been created including these mixing tables and type blends combined with additional guidelines and pointers to make the application of Gelacryl resins in high temperatures a resounding success. DenePur TR and DenePur Tile Primer for waterproofing tiled balconies and terraces. Renovation of balconies is fast becoming a booming business. Older balconies, traditionally waterproofed using resin based or bitumen, need to be renovated or waterproofed due to failure of the original waterproofing solution. Some resin based and bitumen waterproofers used on balconies in the past, while flexible at the time of application, loose this flexibility over the years which causes cracking and leaks on dynamic structures such as balconies. Even new balconies can start to leak shortly after completion due to a number of factors. In some cases, balconies or terraces will be tiled over with ceramic tiles or mosaic inlays, which are impossible to remove without damage. DenePur TR is a transparent, non-yellowing flexible sealer which can be applied onto these surfaces without need to remove the original finish layer. The only surface preparation needed is to clean the surface to remove all dirt, dust or other substances which can cause debonding of the seal coat on the surface and application of DenePur Tile Primer adhesion promoter. DenePur Tile Primer adhesion promoter is an easy to use 1-component product which is applied using a clean lint free cloth to swipe saturate the application surface. DenePur TR also finds its place in the introduction of the DenePur EM Balcony Repair System. Being a non-yellowing, waterproof and weather resistant sealant for application as finishing layer on a large number of surfaces, DenePur TR is highly suited for application on DenePur EM systems finished with coloured sand or chips to create aesthetic finished to balconies and other surfaces. These coloured sand or chip finishes need to be protected with a colour stable, non yellowing top coat to preserve the aspect of the surface and to reduce wear and tear. DenePur TR is suited for normal household pedestrian traffic. Easy to apply as a 1-component product, DenePur TR is rolled or sprayed onto the surface.

2008 Annual PDAE Europe Convention in Vienna is a great succes After the successful first 2007 convention in Brussels, PDA Europe staged its next venue in Vienna on November 18 to 20th. Under the motto “Taking Polyurea to the next level”, the convention was a resounding success with more than 130 attendees, board meetings and training and educational courses. Polyurea markets in Europe and worldwide were addressed with technical papers and application case histories. In 2006 the global PU market had a volume of 10.400 kt off which polyurea takes a 35.6 kt share. The polyurea market is clearly divided geographically as the material is quite popular in the US where about 50% of the market volume can be found, 25% in Europe and the remaining 25% in Asia. Many attendees took the opportunity to attend one of the training courses presented by PDA Europe during the convention. De Neef Conchem is one of the very first members of PDA Europe and has been heavily involved within the organization to improve and generalise industry standards.

Dominique Smits, the Group Product Manager of De Neef Conchem is Chairman of the Training and Education Committee and gave both the “Introduction to Polyurea for applicators and contractors” as well as the “Surface Preparation Course” for concrete, both of which met the needs of many of the attendees and aroused a lot of interest and positive feedback. Surface preparation was by far the most popular subject during the conference. Every speaker underlined its importance for any successful polyurea application.

New product: Denepox LM De Neef has introduced a 2-component flexible epoxy resin for concrete injections, which can be used in dry and wet conditions. The product is available in 4,2 and 42 kg sets. Pot Life is 25 minutes. Tear resistance is 24 N/mm. Tensile strength is > 4 Mpa. Elongation is approximately 70%. But especially remarkeble is the adhesion to wet concrete: > 3 Mpa. Teknomak and De Neef Conchem join forces in waterproofing the Marmaray tunnel in Turkey.

The idea of creating a railway tunnel under the Istanbul Strait linking the European and Asian parts of Turkey has existed for a long time, but old fashioned tunnel techniques were unsuitable for creating this tunnel due to the depth of the Strait. The final technique selected was the immersed tube tunnel technique of which the first European tunnel was the Maas tunnel in Rotterdam which was opened in 1942. The technique was further developed to provide a stable and proven technology which allows large tunnels to be made worldwide. With a total length of 76 km part of which are bored and cut and cover tunnels on each continent, 1.4 km is made by the immersed tube tunnel technique at a maximum depth of 56 m below water level.

A total of 11 tunnel segments (each about 120 meters long) are built in a dry dock about 8 km away from where they will be sunk into the Bosporus and connected to each other and the bored tunnels on the land ends. partner Teknomak. Since the tunnel is considered to be a rigid structure after sinking, all subsequent leaks which occurred after sinking the segments were sealed with HA Cut.

The tunnel segments are constructed in the dry dock, sealed with metal bulkheads and subsequently tested for leaks to determine floating capability. If leaks in cracks and joints are found, leak repairs have to be made in the dry dock. Later the tunnel segments will be towed into place and sunk on the bottom of the Istanbul Strait. Although the tunnel segments are considered rigid once in place, during tow, movement and torsion can be expected. Originally HA Cut was specified for this project, HA Cut cures into a hard rigid compound. After investigation, HA Cut CFL which is a semi-flexible version, was found to have the right properties to obtain secure sealing against the movements during tow. With full support of De Neef’s export manager, Mr. Dirk Geraedts, Mr. Jacques Wakfi, Teknomak’s owner and manager convinced the consultants for the project to change the specification for the dry dock injections to HA Cut CFL. All leaks were subsequently sealed in the dry dock before tow by our Turkish

The main reason for selection of De Neef’s 1-component Hydro Active Grouts was the ease of injection of 1-component hydrophobic resins and the proven track record of these products in waterproofing and sealing tunnels over, or should we say under, the entire world.
