COVER:

WINTEr 2015-16 Hello, Welcome to WINTER 2015-16 at TOM, a season stuffed full of fantastic festive nights out. Why not treat yourself to the best gigs, club nights with a twist, mind-bogglingly imaginative theatre, and much more? Go on, you’ve been good…ish. Stumped for Christmas gift ideas? Get your loved ones a GOLEM (see p4 - 5 if you’re puzzled). Treat the wee ones to brand new family show THE UGLY DUCKLING. It’s all fingers and thumbs, and we mean that in a good way (see p6 - 7). If you’re looking for a bit of escapism from the Christmas rush, zip up your tinsel jump-suits and let your hair down at this year’s Brighton Fringe-favourite CLUB CLICK, or chill out in TOM’S BAR, the theatre bar with a local feel (and local prices). And finally, there’s our TOM’S FRIENDS membership for those of you who just can’t get enough. 15% off selected shows all year round? Yes please! Find out more at THEOLDMARKET.COM/TOMSFRIENDS. Wishing you a merry one,

About US We think THE OLD MARKET (or TOM for short) is the best place in Brighton & Hove to see a show. And we aim to encourage the presentation and production of performance arts, by handpicking shows – just look out for TOM’S TAGS for our picks. We often add new shows – keep an eye on THEOLDMARKET.COM and sign up to our newsletter to stay one-step ahead of the crowds. TOM is owned and managed by two of the city’s most successful artists, the creators of international smash-hit show STOMP.

Golem

See through the new year with 1927’s golem. Straight From the west end. “Anyone interested in the theatre should see this company now” The Observer The follow up to the critically acclaimed THE ANIMALS AND CHILDREN TOOK TO THE STREETS, 1927 bring their new awardwinning show GOLEM to The Old Market, following sell-out seasons in London and Paris. Like a giant graphic novel burst into life, 1927 invites audiences to take a step through the looking glass into a dark and fantastical tale of an extraordinary ordinary man. Blending hand-made animation, claymation, live music and performance, GOLEM is a dystopian fable for the twenty first century, which cleverly and satirically explores one of the great questions of the modern world – who or what is in control of our technologies? Award-winning 1927 are supported by The Old Market.

Finger and Thumb Theatre

The Ugly Duckling

The classic tale reimagined with hand shadow puppetry, from the creators of Brighton Festival’s sell-out show Small Fables. What would you do if you hatched out of an egg only to discover you looked nothing like your brothers and sisters, or even your mother? Imagine if everyone laughed at you because you were different. THE UGLY DUCKLING is the story of a little bird who sets off on an adventure to find out who he is; on his journey he meets a plasticspoon fish and a colander turtle, a rattling crab and a strange snake, a sneezing dog and a singing rabbit, an old lady who plays the harmonica, a cat chasing mice and finally... a magnificent swan! Is the little bird really just a different duckling, or is he something else? Expect the trademark hand shadow puppetry of Drew Colby (Finger and Thumb Theatre), live cello music played by Penny Callow (Flaming Cello), beautiful light-scapes, whimsical humour and clever use of everyday objects, in this brand new Christmas show.
