MJ Journey T

his issue of the MJ Journey is dedicated to Senior Portraits. As you will see in the pages that follow, we continue to move forward both creativity and technically. Our cover Photograph was taken by Jerry Brown. Jerry was asked by a student to take some special pictures at the lighthouse in Havre de Grace, MD and without hesitation he took the extra time to create an awesome portfolio of images. Starting with this issue, I will be clipping articles from web sites and magazines I feel are helpful to our training efforts. Starting on page 12 you will find an article by Holly Howe, Master Photog., Cr. taken from Professional Photographer magazine. It illustrates perfectly many of the posing techniques we have been training in a clear and concise way. I encourage you to study it closely. It will help you in your never ending photographic JOURNEY! Tom Flanders, Director of Photography, CPP

MJ Journey Stepping Up Our Game One of the many reasons Lifetouch is the largest photographic company in the world is the continuing emphasis on photo quality and artistic excellence. Tony Celento, recently retired Director of Photographic Development, began recruiting accomplished portrait photographers from outside the industry in the early 1990’s in an effort to bring our “school picture photography” to a level on par with that of the best studio-based photographers. When Segall-Majestic merged with Lifetouch in 1995, Bill Abbey was one of those recruits. Bill had begun to implement PPA (Professional Photographer of America) portrait quality standards and procedures some years earlier. I instantly recognized his talent and integrated most of his techniques into our training program. Since then Tony has developed the “Lifetouch Counsel”, a group of industry leaders to help consult with training staff to develop higher standards. The Portrait Excellence and Chairman’s Awards are both judged by this panel. The Professional Photographer Certification Commission is an organization separate from PPA that provides a certification program for professional photographers. Those who have earned this certification have passed a comprehensive written exam measuring their technical expertise, have successfully submitted their work to a panel of judges for review and approval, and abide by a professional code of ethics. Lifetouch, in their ongoing quest for photographic excellence is promoting CPP certification for all photographers. I wholeheartedly support this initiative and encourage all photographers to work toward this goal.

Certification is now a required qualification for all Photo Managers and Senior Portrait Team Leaders in the MJ territory, either in advance of hire, or within 2 years of employment. The certification of specialized skill-sets affirms a knowledge and experience base for practitioners in a particular field, their employers, and the public at large. Certification represents a declaration of a particular individual’s professional competence. In some professions certification is a requirement for employment or practice. Doctors, mechanics, accountants, professional secretaries, surveyors and many others are all required to go through a certification process of some kind.* Most of the corporate Lifetouch trainers are now certified. I took the test last July and am proud to add Director of Photography, CPP to my title. Being certified allows our customers and your peers to know you are a qualified professional with a knowledge base greater than that of the average photographer.
