Don Felipe Camarena was born into a family that had distilled tequila since back in the early 1800s. He began his career by growing and selling agave plants to other distillers, but since making tequila was in his blood he started distilling his own, which he called “Tapatio”, the local descriptor for a man from Don Felipe’s home province, Jalisco. Don Felipe soon earned a reputation for using only traditional methods and selecting the finest and ripest agave and in 1937, using equipment from his family’s original distillery, he opened La Alteña Distillery in the mountainous region of Jalisco. His passion for doing things just right inspired his family to continue his legacy, handcrafting Tapatio so it could be enjoyed by future generations just as Don Felipe intended. Today’s Master Distiller is Carlos Camarena, who maintains the standards of excellence set by his grandfather. On July 7th 2007 La Alteña Distillery reached a proud milestone: 70 years of handcrafting one of the world's finest tequilas. Over the last five years the tequilas from La Alteña distillery have become a phenomenon in the UK on-trade, and they now enjoy an unrivalled reputation for quality, integrity and authenticity amongst bartenders and tequila connoisseurs alike.
