Laure Tolsma is a Dutch Born Canadian raised, Global business and Digital Art student at the University Of Waterloo currently on exchange in Melbourne at RMIT. STUDIO PROJECT BRIEF

This project is to design the most efficient form for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in the class Cruiser (2 or more persons in the car). The goal is to create the most efficient form with 52 meters of solar panles . The challenge is to drive 3,000 km from Darwin to Adelaide using a car only powered by solarpanels. The challenge also imposes the restrictions of the use of BMW i3 155/07/19 tires .

INSPIRATION BOARDS OF FORM The inspiration of speed found in nature is based on shapes that are efficient, sea animals like the cullet fish and manta ray are fast meanwhile animals like the horseshoe crab and sea slugs are efficient and although they move with less speed they use less energy.

SKETCH DEVELOPMENT - SOAP CARVING

To help me understand how the 3D nature of this project I used a carving technique in soap in order to form sheets that provided the inspiration this is a learning process for the car period process helped me to define the smooth and organic nature of my end car.

CNC PROTOTYPE PROCESS

After refining my model in Fusion 360 I sectioned it in ways that would allow the CNC milling machine to have access to all the details after this I sent it off to the CNC milling workshop and after a few back and forth refinements it was milled. I then sanded it down and assemble that using double sided tape.

3D PROTOTYPE OUTCOME

3D printing was done on the final model and produce an example of the final form with a doors offset in order to make them easier to view print take roughly 20 hours and was my first experience with 3D printing.

RENDERING DEVELOPMENT & WORKFLOW Rendering was done in vred Pro and began with the signing materials correctly infusion 360 following up with baking lights and Shadows as well as Emily and occlusion in the red before placing it into the environment in Photoshop. Light was rendered based on location lighting data from Alice Springs Australia.

VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE VALIDATION & REFLECTION Virtual reality was interesting tool that allowed me to gain a better sense of the actual dimensions of my vehicle and provided a hands-on experience that allowed for a view of the car that is very difficult to imagine through any other tool. It was my first time working in virtual reality and I enjoyed the experience and now know what this to be used for moving forward.

Semester Reflection

This semester has taught me so many new tools and new ways of tackling problems . At the beginning of the year I had no experience with 3D modelling, realistic rendering, VR and 3D printing and now although I may not be as good as I can be with these tools I understand their power and what they can use for moving forward. I’ve learnt how to balance the confines of the problem against the possibilities of a solution how to use constraints to an advantage.
