In just 12 weeks, the Red Rose team built their smart two-storey 2,800 sq. ft. offices and a swimming pool complex occupying 3,200 sq. ft at Riverside House in Lower Darwen, Blackburn. Standard 12.5mm Fermacell board has been used both internally and externally, whilst 500 sq. metres of 12.5mm Fermacell Powerpanel H2O – developed specifically for wet room applications – has been used in the construction of the pool complex. Historically, building materials used in wet room applications can result in mould growth and loss of tiles. Fermacell Area Manager Phill Mattatia takes up the story. “When I was initially approached by Managing Director Mark Holden about his company becoming one of our recommended installers I was somewhat skeptical. The reason for his interest was to enable Red Rose to tender for work on a prestigious local project – the Darwin Academy – and I just thought he was going through the motions to do just that. “However, I agreed to meet up with Mark and quickly realised he was a serious player. Having accepted it was too late in the day to win work on the Darwin Academy, Mark still wanted Red Rose to become a recommended installer and said they would build their new premises – on land acquired four years earlier – utilising Fermacell throughout. “Following intensive installer training from our Technical Manager Andrew Richardson, the Red Rose team set to work on the project. Quite literally, the land was

insulation of 64dB and we quite literally cannot hear any noise coming from the other rooms. Externally, Lindab SFS was utlised with 12.5mm Fermacell board fixed under 150mm insulated Drive-it render.

“The job they have done is really first class and I can honestly say it compares with the best work of our existing top installers,” he said.

Red Rose Drylining is one of the largest plastering and drylining contractors in the North West of England. It was borne out of a company established by Michael Anderson and Mark Holden called Anderson & Holden which set up in 1985 and based in Darwen.

Mark Holden commented: “Our building was exposed to the elements for around six weeks before rendering took place and there is no way we could have adopted this approach using plasterboard. We finished the inside of the building before completing the outside! The curtain walling was the last material to be fitted. “The weather conditions over the whole three months of construction were pretty bad with heavy downfalls of rain. “We used Fermacell tapered edge on the upstairs walls and square edge on the downstairs walls. Both products allowed us a high standard of finishing and the fact we only need one board for both internal and external walls helped save considerable time on the project. “Double boards were used in-between the office and boardroom to give a sound

The name changed to Red Rose Drylining Ltd in 2000 and its success has enabled the company to develop its new purpose-built headquarters. “It’s a family business,” says Mark Holden proudly, adding: “We’ve now got 16 permanent staff and a great working atmosphere with everyone pulling together to do their best. “Red Rose is a ‘preferred client sub contractor’ for major projects within the commercial and residential sectors throughout the North West and we have won seven NHBC awards during 2008 and a further 10 so far this year. “It is our aim to become one of the biggest Fermacell installers in the UK and also offer a full range of ‘fit-out’ packages,” he concluded.
