The Penrith Panthers would like to thank their sponsors for 2013

A message from the chairman The serious injury Lachlan Coote suffered is devastating for the team and himself after his very successful transition to five eighth, his selection to represent Australia against New Guinea and his strong start to this season. We all wish him a speedy recovery. Following the season opening win against the Raiders, the loss against the West Tigers was disappointing, because we were well in the game with our defence letting us down at times. A strong effort against South Sydney also saw our team defeated, but I am sure we’ll carry the lessons

learned through to the game against the Titans today. Apart from that we have had a very strong start to the season right throughout our club. Our Junior Representative teams are undefeated leaders of both their competitions after six games and our State Cup partners Windsor and our NYC Under 20’s are also both undefeated. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak , 17, had a very confident debut on the wing in the NYC and played strongly in the good win over the Wests Tigers.

It was satisfying at the Annual General Meeting to be able to provide a much improved report to our members and to be able to advise that our Group is in a significantly improved position than this time last year. We are quietly confident that the next 12 months will see continued improvement both on and off the field. Regards and best wishes

Executive GM

‘’Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor’s cup, And he learned too late when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown.’’ - Author unknown Attitude wins you a lot of football games. Lack of selfbelief will never win you a thing. There are times in a match when it can all seem too hard. The opposition is powering away. Everything they do turns to gold. You can’t seem to do anything right. You start thinking, ‘’This just isn’t going to be our day.’’ You don’t necessarily give up, but in little moments you don’t come forward and tackle with the conviction you should. You stop communicating positively with people around you, and everyone gets isolated in their own negative thoughts. Your team gets away from the pre-match plan, and you start to invent new ways to make mistakes. Experience tells us, though, that if you can just hang in there for a little while longer; if you refuse to give up on a run, a chase, a

6

tackle; if you can stick together as a group in mind, body and soul, things can change. The game comes back to you. Things start to fall into place. Your opponents don’t seem like giants any more. You string together some positive football, get on a roll, score some tries and before you know it, you’re back in the match with not long left on the clock. When the comeback falls short of the mark, you sit in the dressing room feeling defeated but hopefully a valuable lesson has been learnt. This was pretty much the story of the game at Penrith last Sunday, where South Sydney defeated the Panthers 44 points to 32. If you are playing the best then you need to be at your best. Unfortunately we were anything but perfect. To the Panthers’ credit, though, they stood their ground. They clawed their way back into the contest, and more importantly, gained credibility with themselves and each other. The fight back was stirring. With the score now at 34-32 and only eight minutes to play, we were in reach of a remarkable victory. For the Panthers though: ‘’And he learned too late when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown.’’

Ivan Cleary

THE COACH

Going home without a win over the past two weeks, after such a great win against the Raiders, has certainly been disappointing. Last Sunday’s match against South Sydney was always going to be a tough one. Looking back at the match, our players are walking away with one specific thing to focus on: we need to back ourselves. Our boys gallantly fought back in the second half and played the type of football that will challenge any team in the NRL. It was also during this fight back that I experienced the might of the Panthers faithful.

I can’t tell you how good it felt to hear the Panther chant go up and feel the pride and excitement throughout the crowd. We will draw strength and belief from the football we were able to play under adversity and if we can sustain this for longer periods, then we will be very competitive. As is the nature of the NRL, today we take on another strong side. The Titans will be a very tough opponent. We’ll be giving it our all and we’re looking forward to seeing you in the stands cheering us on. Enjoy your Easter Sunday football.

Kevin Kingston

THE CAPTAIN

Today we play our third game of the season in front of our home crowd. Hearing that huge cheer go up from the fans when we run out onto the field at Centrebet Stadium is always an adrenaline rush and spurs us on to be at our best. Losing last week to South Sydney was a bit of a sting to our pride. We played with a lot of heart and looking back, the boys and I know that we need to have confidence and belief in ourselves for the

whole 80 minutes. We might not have achieved that over the past three games, but we will be focusing on doing just that today. The Titans are sitting in third place in the competition, but we’re not concentrating on the numbers. Today is all about playing with heart and pride for ourselves and our fans. Thanks for being here to cheer us on.

Trials

Our many volunteers in the junior league have been very busy organising trials, placing orders for jumpers, canteen supplies and many other things, all in preparation for the trials which are in full swing at present, and the start of the season. Team nominations were due in on Thursday so all the behind-the-scenes work now begins to construct our competitions and have them ready for distribution to our clubs, referees and uploaded to our website which should all be finalised by Wednesday, April 10 in readiness for the start of the season. The CUBs program has finished for the season and the merit squads announced. The U15s merit squad is currently in Nyngan participating in the annual event which is held every Easter. The Junior League will be hosting a ‘Come & Try’ day at Peter Van Hasselt Reserve (the home of PCYC Mt Druitt JRL) on Sunday April 14 between 11am and 1pm. The day is FREE and open to anyone aged between 4-8 years old who may have wanted to play, but wasn’t sure they would like it. If you have played before and would like to be part of the day you are also welcome to attend. You must pre-register your attendance and this can be done through the junior league website: penrith.leaguenet.com.au. Congratulations to our Harold Matthews and SG Ball teams who up until this weekend have remained undefeated. They play Souths this weekend in the top of the table clash, followed by Canberra in the last round before the finals series games. The junior league season starts on April 20.

Windsor Wolves

U20s

Nabuli’s hat-trick

Garth Brennan

leads Windsor to big win.

Quest

for perfection

NYC COACH

Windsor Wolves made it back-to-back wins on the road with a strong 38-22 victory over a Wyong Roos outfit played in warm conditions at Morry Breen Oval. Fijian winger Eto Nabuli was the standout; a hat-trick of tries taking his tally to five this season. The first 15 minutes of the match was a tight affair with strong goal line defence being a feature. Junior Tia Kilifi, playing against his old team, crashed over from close range for the opening try, giving the Roos an early 6-nil lead after the conversion. Windsor soon levelled the scores in the 20th minute, before late-inclusion Matt Robinson capitalised and surged over the try line. Blake Austin levelled the score with a successful kick. On the back of this try, the Wolves started to look the better of the two sides; the highlight being Nabuli’s 65-metre run to the try line which saw the Wolves go into half time 12-6 leaders.

12

ROUND FOUR - MARCH 31, 2013 - PANTHERS

The second half opened with an unconverted try to the Roos’ Allen Mulia Malau, before Windsor surged back to score four unanswered tries in fifteen minutes: one to Austin, the two others to Nabuli, before Anthony Cherrington scored to make it 34-10. To their credit Wyong hung in and were rewarded with a converted try, but the Wolves were quick to respond with a great team try put away by Matt Moylan. In the dying moments of the game, a penalty against Wolves prop Dayne Weston allowed the Roos to score a late try, but despite a successful conversion, the Wolves came home 38-22 winners. Wolves coach Guy Missio said: “Very happy with the effort defensively compared to last week, we improved a lot on our commitment. There is a lot of natural ability in the side and if we do the little things right the rest will take care of itself.” Tomorrow, the Wolves take on the Auckland Vulcans in NZ in a tough fixture at Mt Smart Stadium.

Heading into round four today undefeated is definitely a great feeling. Last weekend, the boys did well to push through what were very tough conditions here at Centrebet as we took on South Sydney. The beginning of the first half saw the Rabbitohs take a 12-nil lead before we’d even touched the ball, but some gusty play put us on the scoreboard after James Dunley scored two great tries. The heat really seemed to take its toll, with both our team and the visitors struggling with handling errors. After a welcome drinks break and some serious defence work to keep the Rabbitohs away from the try line, a try from Daniel Foster saw us head into half time with a 16-14 lead. In the second half the boys rallied against the heat and delivered tries by Kierran Moseley, Kieren Moss and Daniel Riccardi to bring the Panthers a 32-14 victory. Despite the success we’ve achieved so far this season, we’re not getting complacent by any means. This is a tough competition, and the

boys have been training hard all week to capitalise on ourstrengths, and work on our weak points. Today, the Titans will be looking to hit back after last week’s loss to the Sea Eagles. It’s nice to be at the top of the ladder, but we’ll be running out with as much determination as if we were at the bottom. Thanks for coming out to support us. Garth Brennan

WELCOME TO

PROWL BAY A GAME of football at Centrebet Stadium is always a memorable experience. Seeing the players run out onto their home field to a huge roar from the ‘Panther pride’ and the adrenaline rush of all the action on the field, makes each home game something special. This year the Panthers decided to reach out to the Penrith community, and offer this exciting experience to as many people as possible. Prowl Bay is the realisation of that vision. This community membership initiative is believed to be the first of its kind not only for the NRL, but across all Australian sporting codes. Located in Bay 15 of the Western Grandstand, Prowl Bay contains 336 seats, all donated by individuals and organisations, with Penrith MP Stuart Ayers proudly serving as ambassador. From the moment the call went out, the Panthers were inundated with generous offers. This included our top 25 NRL players, Panthers Group Board and Senior Management, Junior Rugby League, and major sponsor OAK, with each donor’s name printed on the seats. The players and their parents from Brothers Junior Rugby League Club were our Round One guests, followed by the Indigenous kids supported by the Aboriginal Medical Service. Panthers Indigenous Program Manager Glen Liddiard said the kids and the elders had a great time. “The best thing they got out of it was going to the football, which they hadn’t had the chance to for ages, as well as catching up with old friends and relatives,’’ he said.

‘’This is a great way to get local community members back in touch with each other, through something as simple as a game of footy, which we all love.” Today, the representative players and their families from the Penrith Junior Rugby League district clubs and the players from the Western Sydney Academy get their chance to get close to the action. JRL President Yvonne Purtell said it’s also a chance for the crowd to recognise some of our most outstanding up-and-coming local rugby league players. “The players from our Harold Matts and SG Ball competitions will take to the field for a lap of honour between today’s NRL and NYC games, “she said. “Both sides are undefeated so far this season, and this is a great way for Panthers fans to acknowledge that achievement.” Throughout the rest of the season, a special Panthers committee will select the lucky community groups who’ll sit in Prowl Bay, with nominations and registrations taken on the dedicated page on the official Panthers football website. Penrith Panthers Executive General Manager Football Phil Gould said: “This program benefits the youth of Western Sydney and those less fortunate, who otherwise might not be able to enjoy such an experience. We hope to see Prowl Bay full of Panther supporters every time the Panthers run out to play.” To donate or nominate seats in Prowl Bay, visit http://www.penrithpanthers.com.au/ communityprowlbay or call the Panthers Membership Team on 4720 5575

The classroom @ Panthers Program is in full swing this term, involving students from Braddock, Cambridge Park and Cambridge Gardens Public Schools. Our goal this year was to forge even closer links with our local schools, and we have already made great progress towards this with more classroom visits, more teacher contact and greater input from parents. There have been many highlights already this term with our students visiting a range of venues around Penrith as a reward for their hard work in class. The students have been to the YMCA for Gymnastics, KAOS Gaming Centre at Panthers, Windsor Ten Pin Bowl and Panthers Aqua Golf and have really enjoyed the satisfaction of setting goals and

working towards them. We have had a morning tea mini graduation with some students and parents from Braddock School who completed our morning program. The students and their parents attended the classroom where three of our Holden Cup U20’s players presented them with certificates and stayed on to sign some hats and gear for the students. Finally, we have had a visit this week from The Footy Show’s Darryl “The Big Marn” Brohman. Darryl joined our afternoon group on Monday as the students cooked up some chocolate Easter egg treats. Darryl was impressed with the attitude of the students … and even more so with the Easter eggs!

Our fan this week is Laurelle Klureson. She won the signed jersey in our football members’ free raffle at our post-match fan day event at Panthers last Sunday.

Twitter tweet of the week Wayne Bailey @wayne_ba1l3y

Panthers no.7 Luke Walsh was at his scheming best in Sunday’s 4432 loss to South Sydney. Walshy’s kicking game continues to be a main focal point of the Panthers’ attack and will be vital in today’s game against the Gold Coast Titans. Picture: Getty Images

Congratulations to Wayne Bailey for his tweet of the week! Wayne said; Great job today @PenrithPanthers taught my son (6) a great lesson, to “NEVER give up” we will win more than we lose with that attitude.

Send us a tweet @PenrithPanthers

Facebook post of the week Vikki Moore ahead of this weekend’s game against the Titans Nobody wants to be near a hungry Panther, our Panthers are starving! So watch out...it’s game on, you can almost smell the fear.
