HIDDEN CITY

JUGRA, SELANGOR

Jugra was the royal capital of Selangor when the then ruling monarch, Sultan Abdul Samad built Istana Jugra (Jugra Palace) and moved there in 1875. It was situated in a strategic location, not exactly at the river mouth but easily accessible from the Straits of Malacca, and protected by a hill, Bukit Jugra; which stands clearly out above the low-lying mangrove swamps. For centuries it served as a familiar landmark to navigators of the Straits of Malacca. Chinese, Arab and European mariners marked it in their charts; Bukit Jugra was also known to many foreign navigators as Parcelar Hill, derived from the Arabic name for it, balasar.

It was during this time that Jugra also briefly became the centre of British administration in Selangor, although this was soon moved to Klang, and a decade later to Kuala Lumpur. The Sultan continued to live at Jugra until he died in 1898, and the new Sultan, Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah also known as Sultan Sulaiman was proclaimed there. This was the last important occasion in Jugra. After that, Jugra quickly shrank to become a backwater, as even the local administration was shifted to the new centre of Banting and Sultan Sulaiman made his official residence at Klang. 3

STYLE & FASHION NEWS/REVIEW FINDER

Vuitton Collaboration Marc Jacob says... Louis Vuitton & Yayoi Kusama are teaming up to create a collection, launching on July 10 - with a second instalment landing in stores in October. The French fashion house first worked with the Japanese artist back in February, when it offered financial support for her retrospective at the Tate Modern. “Her energy is just endless,” Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs said of the artist. “Through the painstaking sort of obsession in each of her canvasses and installations that she’s created, you see this world that never ends. I guess that’s what I admire and that’s what I respond to in terms of feeling for her and for her work.” The collection will focus on Kusama’s bold signature surreal spots, which will appear on skirts, tops, leggings and bags. Jacobs first

met 83-year-old Kusama, who voluntarily lives in a psychiatric institution, in 2006 at her Tokyo studio.” Louis Vuitton has outlets and fans all around the world and I hope, like with other collaborations, and expect, like other collaborations, that this will bring the work of Kusama to a new audience and that’s the audience of Louis Vuitton,” added Jacobs. “It continues something I began when I came here which is the idea of art and collaboration, or collaboration with artists. For many people who don’t look at art or go to galleries, or maybe they’re not aware of Kusama’s work, there will be a new venue, a new place to see this work and to come to appreciate it through the eyes of Louis Vuitton.”

HEALTH

Prevention Guide

CARROT GOLD! “New research has shown that the compound falcarinol in carrots can protect animals from cancer. The study involved only raw carrots - it is not yet known if carrot juice or cooked carrots have the same effect”.

Carrots are good for lowering cholesterol: Two and a half mediumsized raw carrots eaten daily lower blood cholesterol by about 11%. Carrots are good for lowering the risk of cancer: One carrot (half a cup) once a day can cut the risk of lung cancer in half. The beta carotene component in carrots is particularly of benefit. To get the most anticancer protection, eat some carrots cooked. Cooking releases carotenes which are believed to be the active ingredients shielding carcinogenic attacks. You get two to five times more carotene from cooked carrots than from raw ones. But don’t overcook, as much of the precious beta carotene will be lost. 14

Carrots are good for improving vision: Carrots are rich in beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A - a crucial nutrient for maintaining proper eyesight. If your body is deficient in vitamin A, then regular consumption of carrots will be of benefit. Carrots are good for weight loss: Grated carrot makes a great snack. You’ll find that a grated carrot is much more filling than a whole carrot - strange but true. Carrots are also rich in dietary fibre, antioxidants, and minerals. It is recommended that we eat one carrot a day as part of our fruit and vegetable intake.

SMILE MORE! Are you overjoyed by the influenza virus? You probably are not. Various studies have shown that smiling can help the body in various ways: [] Smiling boosts your immune system. Functions that occur to better your immunity work better when you are smiling, possibly due to the fact that you are more relaxed. Say goodbye to the flu! [] Smiling has been shown to reduce blood pressure. When you smile you become more relaxed, thus causing a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. [] Smiling releases endorphins, natural pain relievers, and serotonin. When these three work together they make you feel great. If you are looking for a natural pain-relieving drug, try smiling. [] Smilers live an average of 7 years longer than non-smilers; smilers live an average of 79.9 years, partial smilers live an average of 75 years, and non-smilers live an average of 72.9 years. [6] So smile every day! Obviously you need to exercise, eat right, and live a healthy lifestyle, in addition to smiling. Living longer makes people happier, because you have more years to be happy and to enjoy life. Smiling helps people avoid looking fatigued or overwhelmed. Try to put on a smile when you are stressed, because it will make you be and appear happy. Your stress will also be quickly relieved, and your smile will be contagious to others. When others are happy, you will become even happier making the people around you even happier. You will start laughing, and so will others. That shows you that from being sad, you can start laughing with the help of only a single smile. 15
