welcome to the JUNE 2013 edition of Bawtry Today. June already! How this year is flying by. as i write this the sun is shining but as yet we have seen little sunshine this year, although the early May Bank Holiday Monday was a rare treat This month celebrates the 6th Birthday of Bawtry Today. I find it hard to believe that the magazine has been supporting the local area for so long. Thank you to everybody who has contributed in that time; by providing information and content, advertising events or businesses, or simply by using the local businesses you have found within the magazine. I hope you will continue to support YOUR magazine for many years to come. June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only are they fun events, but also valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know. The July issue will be delivered during the last few days of June, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 14th June.

Best wishes, Paula x

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Focus There seems to be a special day for everything nowadays and whilst this is no exception it was one that seemed a shame to ignore. Whilst there’s little information that points to a definitive origin for this special day what could be better than spending time outdoors with friends and family? It falls on 18th June this year so why not find a local park or field, kick off your shoes and enjoy an alfresco meal together? Make sure you go somewhere that isn’t restricted for what you want to take, such as pets or alcohol and ensure that there’s sufficient shade for those of your party who need it. Bring cups and plates that will withstand a grassy field or slopes or sand and always remember a bag for the rubbish. There’s nothing worse than people who leave their mess behind for others. Games are fab too and they don’t have to be athletic. A

International Picnic Day peaceful game of Scrabble in the sun is just as fun as leaping around with a Frisbee (and less disruptive on people around you).

And finally don’t forget your blanket. Make sure you can wash it or wipe it clean and ensure it’s big enough for everyone and the food!

Simple Weight

Loss is it really true that exercise can make you feel good?

answer: When you cycle, swim, run, or carry out any other form of endurance exercise, your pituitary gland releases substantial quantities of ‘endorphins’, chemicals which can block sensations of pain and produce overall feelings of euphoria.

do i need to go to the gym to exercise? answer: The simple answer to this is NO! Walking, riding your bike, playing football with the kids are all great forms of exercise that do not need to be performed in the gym. Everyday household chores such as cleaning and gardening also work the body and are all forms of physical activity.

is NO! Try using plastic bottles filled with water to make your own weights, or lifting a bag with books inside to provide resistance. Tins of food can also be used as substitute weights, or why not use your own body weight to provide resistance. Try doing exercises such as dips, squats, press ups, situps, lunges at home, try walking or running up and down the stairs to give your thighs a good workout?

Can you suggest anything i could do to become more active?

Look at ways you can be more active in your everyday life. For example, could you walk up the stairs at work rather than taking the lift? Could you go for a walk in your lunch break? Could you walk the kids to school? Try and be active around the home hovering, and dusting are all forms of physical activity. Why not put on some music and ‘dance’ i am not able to take up a regular whilst doing your cleaning. T

activity each week due to time/ work constraints.

do i need to buy some weights to exercise at home? answer: The simple answer again

SUPER SLIMMERS’

weight-loss success is in the bag! slimmers in Bawtry are dropping lbs and bagging up all the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise money for a good cause in The Big slimming World Clothes Throw. Members of the Bawtry Slimming World group have spring-cleaned their closets and are donating the clothes that no longer fit their new slimline figures to their local Cancer Research UK shop in Retford. Nicky, who runs the group which meets at Bawtry Hall Conf. Centre every Thursday, says members were delighted to get behind the cause and jumped at the chance to recycle their old clothes. The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s charity partner for 2013. Each bag of clothes collected could raise up to £25. Nicky says: “Members in the Bawtry group have lost 88 stones and 2 pounds since January this year and they’re feeling fantastic! Lots of people have dropped down clothes sizes and their wardrobes are full of clothes that are too big and baggy now. And they’re happy to give them away because they know that they’re never going to need them again! Our Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet that members follow for a little while and then ‘come off’ when they’ve reached their target weight. At group each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life so they really do slim for good.” anyone who’d like to slim down like these generous slimming World members is welcome at the Bawtry group, which meets every Thursday at 3.30pm or 5.30pm at Bawtry Hall Conference Centre. ‘The Lions Abroad’

This month i thought i would bring you a bit of an international flavour. The Lions strive to help local communities all over the world.

First of all let’s take a trip to Massachusetts in America where a Lion club spent three weeks removing debris from the Miller River after trees collapsed into it after a major storm. After a lot of hard work the river was cleared making it a safe environment for river users and nature lovers alike. Moving on to Romania where, for the last 5 years a group of Lions have been arranging an annual camp for children with diabetes. The camp is a haven where the children can feel accepted.

Forthcoming production at Bawtry Phoenix Theatre, station road, Bawtry. 9th - 12th July - The Young Players present Bugsy Malone by alan Parker. This much loved musical is performed by the Phoenix Young Players, our popular and talented youth group. It’s a gangster musical enacted by children. Acted out before scaleddown sets, it details the career of Bugsy Malone, who rises to the top of the criminal ladder in 1920s New York. Tickets will be available from ‘Bawtry Bon Bons’ (next to the theatre) from June 10th. T

They have the chance to swim, dance, make crafts and importantly make new friends. The Lions from Oradea raise funds through organising many events including concerts and dances. Moving swiftly on to Hungary another group of Lions in a place called Miskolc support a local guide dog school. Instead of the adopting the traditional method of fund raising for cash donations they took some guide dogs to the local pet store where patrons were encouraged to buy and donate dog food, tools and other supplies. Finally, moving onto the city of Oslo. The Lions created the biggest book sale in Norway since 1976. Forty five thousand books split into 30 categories were offered for sale. The proceeds went to many good causes including youth sports, scouts, outings for senior citizens and schools and orphanages in Ghana. if you want more details of any of these initiatives you can view the Lions Magazine at the following website. http://www. lionsclubs.org/eN/news-andevents/lion-magazine/index.php. Back to Tickhill and a big thank you to those people who supported us at the scarecrow festival and a reminder to seek us out at Bawtry, Wadworth or Tickhill Gala’s. T

Advice on CCJs

from Jones & Co

James Murray of Jones & Co gives advice on County Court Judgments & how to avoid damaging your credit rating.

A CCJ is a judgment that a county court issues when someone has failed to pay money that they owe. CCJs are a simple way for creditors to claim the money they’re entitled to. The Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines records CCJs for 6 years. Banks and other lenders can do a CCJ check against the CCJ register when deciding whether to offer credit. Getting a mortgage or loan with a CCJ is difficult. Even if you get credit, you may end up paying a higher interest rate. The moral of the story is to react quickly to a judgment entered against you and be realistic about your chances of successfully setting it aside within 1 month when deciding whether or not to pay it.

For more information or to arrange an appointment

Nearly all CCJs go on the register.

Please contact:

james.murray@ jonessolicitors.co.uk • Never pay it: If you don’t pay it, it’s shown as unsatisfied.

• Remove the CCJ: The only way to remove a CCJ is to ask the court to set aside the judgment because you have a genuine reason to dispute • Pay in full within 1 month of the judgment: it. Be careful though – if your application to set The CCJ will be removed from the register aside is unsuccessful and is heard more than 1 month after the date of the judgment it will show • Pay in full after 1 month of the judgment: up on the register even if you subsequently pay The CCJ stays on the register but it will be it in full; the 1 month runs from the date of the recorded as ‘satisfied’. judgment, not the date of the hearing.

Garden View

Express Yourself at a time when i’m making preparations for my summer holidays and browsing through pictures of tropical locations, i can’t help but compare them with the images of england that i hold in my mind. it wasn’t until i visited america last year, that i realised how very english we are, and how we really do live up to the stereotype we’ve been given. i wouldn’t say i’m a shrinking violet when it comes to confidence, but i really did feel quite reserved. As a nation, I don’t think we’re very good at expressing ourselves, our thoughts or our emotions, and whilst I’m not advocating yelling at random people in the street because “your dust cart is blocking my parking lot” or applauding in the cinema (both of which I experienced whilst over there last year), I do think that when it comes to gardens we are, in the main, a little unadventurous. In

fact, I would go as far as to say that a striped lawn and three borders are as traditional as our Sunday roast! But fear not, it doesn’t have to be this way. Expressing yourself outdoors needn’t mean exposing your inner most secrets, but I do think your outdoor space should reflect your personality. The residents at Bestall Towers are generally neat and tidy (in fact clutter makes my head hurt), so my garden reflects this with its simple straight lines, well ordered borders, immaculate patio, and perfect lawn! So what does my garden say about me? I’m a clean freak, with an obsession for perfection and a need to control my environment … pretty accurate I’d say. So what does your garden say about

TOP TIPS

you? Does it reflect who you are, or maybe who you were? Maybe it’s time for a change and to let loose that wild side, paint the fence black and plant only orange flowering plants. Whatever you do, break from the norm and express yourself. T

Until next time, happy gardening,

At Bircotes Town Hall Village Ventures staged 5 events for the public this year, music and theatre playing to over 400 people. The Town Hall put on plays by 2 Theatre companies doing work specifically for children Kids Carpet and Theatre Rites: two shows each playing to four local schools. In September Puppet State Theatre Company will be putting on the Man Who Planted Trees, again to four local primary schools these events, free to the schools, are funded by Harworth and Bircotes Town Council. At the public events we run a licensed bar whose profit, together with a raffle, either helps to fund the plays put on for the local primary schools or we support a charity – this year we have sent more than £375 to Oxfam, Comic Relief and Bassetlaw Mind. Thank you to everyone who worked hard behind the scenes and behind the bar, thank you to Taylors of Tickhill for supplying the bar stock and glasses and finally to everyone who turned out and supported us this year and to Notts County Council who run the Scheme, supported by Bassetlaw District Council with grant funding from Arts Council England which makes the ticket price our audience pay very reasonable. We have had some terrific evenings. Baltic Crossing, our last concert, plenty of instruments played by five musicians ( a Dane, two Fins and two from our own Northern shores) who all met in the Sibelius Conservatoire in Finland brought the house down. The thunderous applause at the end summed up the evening, eighty people just having a thoroughly good time and listening to some really funny guys playing some wonderful music. Now then – I have two exhibitions to recommend. If you see nothing else all month I urge you to go and 40 40

Misson & Springs wI meeting

Probus visit to Parliment

on Monday 29th april a party of members of Tickhill & Bawtry Probus and their partners set off on a coach trip to the Houses of Parliament. We stayed overnight in an excellent hotel with great views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Early on Tuesday we set off for the Palace of Westminster where we were taken through both chambers – the Lords and the Commons – by a most informative and entertaining guide.

As well as absorbing the atmosphere of the Mother of Parliaments, we all learned a great deal. Our trip rounded off with a visit to

the Jewel Tower and some free time to wander at will before returning home. Everyone congratulated and thanked David Green for organising such a splendid outing. T

spring was in the air at the april meeting of Misson & springs Wi, as James Wood from Tom Wood Florists in doncaster, demonstrated how to make stunning flower arrangements. as he talked us through the techniques involved, he made it all look deceptively simple and he still managed to answer all our questions at the same time. We were very gratefu for his generosity, both in time and in the donation of the four arrangements he had made for our raffle prizes. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 29th May when Alison Spencer from Neals Yard Remedies will host a Holistic Facial Evening. On 26th June, Rob McMurdo will be talking to us about his Life as a Funeral Director – this comes highly recommended! You will be most welcome to join us at the Community Centre in Vicar Lane, Misson at 7.30 pm. For further details, please contact Joanna Phillips on 07747443374. T
