Welcome to the

January 2017 edition And so we welcome another year … 2017 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As always I had such plans to be organised well ahead for Christmas so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, missing things, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! As I mentioned last month I did add an additional challenge to December this year, with our house move which took place over the 8th/9th/10th December. I write this a few days later from our new home, where huge numbers of boxes have been unpacked, but many remain unopened! Christmas cards remain unwritten, presents not bought, never mind wrapped and with 5 magazines to finish – and using mobile broadband as unfortunately we are still waiting for our home broadband connection! So it looks like I will be working and preparing right up to Christmas again! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation.

The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th January. 2017 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy, but a memorable one for you. Wishing you a Peaceful 2017. Enjoy January and I will be back in a months’ time with your February magazine.

Best wishes,

Sheffield Theatres until Saturday 21st ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ runs at the Crucible and in the Lyceum you will find Swan Lake (St Petersburg Classical Ballet), Sister Act and Blood Brothers – but not all on the stage together…. The galleries are usually busy with people; they do a lot of Children’s activities in the galleries which brings in whole families. People were scratching their heads trying to unlock the meaning and make sense of the objects on show, just as you might with a cupboard full of random objects, this show is a bit of a detective game, there are lots of clues, but one isn’t sure where it’s leading, but the experience is not an unpleasant one. You can hear Helen in conversation about her work on Wed 25 Jan at 6pm booking required. Also until 19 March, there is a show made up of works from the marvelous Cambridge Kettles Yard (which is having a make-over), it’s always a joy to see a wall of Alfred Wallace’s paintings. www.hepworthwakefield.org York Art Gallery y until 19 March a major exhibition ‘FLESH’ including works

We are looking forward to another successful year of interesting speakers and engaging activities for all our members. We begin with our meeting on Wednesday 25th January, when Alicia Kaill, the body buddy, will ease us into our programme with some armchair yoga.

On 24th November members enjoyed their annual Christmas lunch at the Millstone. As ever, the food was very good and the company was splendid – enhanced by a little impromptu choral singing – well we do have some members of the Tickhill Male Voice Choir amongst us – and a few Welshmen ! A great start to the festive season. Purrfect New Year Resolutions We all make them, but how often do they fade away as the year marches on? Sponsors receive a welcome pack, animal updates, invites to VIP events and you can choose to have your name on the animal pen. You can obtain an application form from our Centre, or any of our shops in Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne; or email info@rspcadrb.org.uk or phone 01302 7179790 (11am-4pm six days, closed Wednesdays) and we will send the form to you. The second idea does not involve money! We are looking for people who can collect bags of good quality secondhand clothes – have a clear out for New Year and encourage friends and families to do the same. When you have about half a dozen bags, ring us and we will collect. We will ask you if you are prepared to do this every six months or so. The donations are vital – every penny made in our charity shops goes directly to the South Yorkshire Animal Centre. if I can cast our minds back to Christmas and consider the nativity scene again. This time I wonder if we can focus on the young woman Mary. I wonder what would have happened if Mary had said ‘no’ to the angel who visited her to announce the birth of Jesus through her. Just from the start, the odds were against her. She was a young girl engaged to Joseph. Both of them lived in a tiny village called Nazareth. I wonder if you can imagine how life in the countryside in Palestine could be DW WKDW WLPH 3HRSOH KHOG GHDU WR WKH /DZV RI Moses and other religious rules. Hence, for a young girl to be pregnant before marriage must be against the ‘norm’ of the day. It could be similar to Victorian Britain. She risked facing shame, gossip in the village, and probably being rejected by her family and the entire village. What about her relationship with Joseph? He was getting ready to marry a virgin girl but not someone who was pregnant already. Saying ‘yes’ to the angel’s request was therefore a big decision for a young girl who did not know what the future was going to be. I wonder if I can use this opportunity to remind folks that we are just entering a new year. I may have to stop and wish you a happy new year now. However, for some of you, this year may not be happy because of some decisions you may have to take. You may say ‘yes’ to a promotion in a job or to a marriage proposal. He later died on the cross to save us from our sins but then resurrected from the grave at Easter. Who knows what will happen to you and our world when you make the right decisions this year? I wonder if I can suggest to you that as you consider your decisions do not forget to depend on God for directions. He will give you the boldness to say ‘yes’. %DZWU\ 5HVLGHQWV *URXS Firstly, from all the BRG Committee we hope that the readers of this magazine have had a merry Christmas and will have a prosperous & healthy New Year. At the last Bawtry Town Council meeting it was approved to provide free parking on a Sunday and Bank Holidays, further discussions with Excel parking services will subsequently be taking place. Consideration was given to resort back to the charging hours in November 2007; however WKH ȴ QDQFLDO LPSOLFDWLRQV RI LPSOHPHQWLQJ WKLV were too prohibited at this time. Additionally Councillor Sandy Young is continuing discussions with Doncaster council and Excel parking regarding operating a Taxi Rank on the Market Hill car Park. Well done to everyone who helped organise the Bawtry Christmas market; this was by far the best event in years with two of the main organisers being Cllr Rebecca Dickenson and Jackie Strickland , Rebecca and Jackie must be proud of what was achieved, great job all round. The construction of the new community pavilion is well underway; the main metal structure is now in place, after speaking to members of the BARS Committee the building is hopefully to be completed by March 2017. The Committee overseeing the construction of the new pavilion will have representatives from the BTC and hopefully the BRG. The Old Bottling plant on Tickhill Road has now gained planning permission for change of use to an indoor car park complete with car washing facilities. The Bawtry Residents Group held its Annual General Meeting in November at the Crown Hotel, Doug Cartwright re-elected as the Chair for another year along with Edwin Marrison (Vice Chair), Margaret Byrne (Secretary) and Gilbert Budgen (Treasurer). Among the many issues raised at the meeting was Robin Hood Airport, Chair of the BRG and BTC member Doug Cartwright agreed to liaise with the BTC member Cllr Alan Croply who sits on the noise committee for the airport regarding concerns raised at the meeting. A resident informed the meeting that by logging onto the web and inputting ‘Flight Tracker 24’ DOO WKH GHSDUWXUHV DQG LQFRPLQJ ȵ LJKWV FDQ EH tracked, a very handy tool to anyone wishing to UHSRUW DQ\ QRLVH RU ORZ ȵ \LQJ LQFLGHQWV ΖI DQ\ residents wish to complain they may do so by telephoning 01302 623499. After discussion with Mr Richard Wells (Superintendent Pharmacists) for the Weldricks group, Mr Wells wishes to send his gratitude to all the residents of Bawtry for the support shown regarding the signing of the petition, this has now been put forward to the Government NHS department. Mr Wells will be attending the next residents group meeting in January to address all in attendance regarding this issue. Unsocial parking is now a great concern for the BRG; this will be raised at the next meeting of the BTC in December, the Chair asked for all issues to be reported to the town council so action can be taken by the BTC and then forwarded onto DMBC. The date of the next meeting of Bawtry Resident Group will be the 26th of January 2017 at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry. The Big Garden Bird Watch In the depth of winter garden birds bring us so much pleasure. Squabbling on feeders, their colours and songs brighten gloomy days. Birds play a vital role in our gardens’ ecosystems. They are feathered pest controllers, eating everything from snails to aphids to wind-fall fruits. If you’d like to attract more birds to your garden there are several things to consider. Lots of people hang up a bag of peanuts when the weather turns grim then become disheartened as it hangs there unused. So here are my handy tips. Food - When I was a child my dad told me to only feed birds in the winter, but now the experts advise putting out food all year round. There is a dizzying array of bird food available but a good VWDUWHU PL[ LQFOXGHV VXQČľ RZHU VHHGV FDQDU\ seed, hemp and husk-free oats. Use a good tubestyle feeder and clean it regularly as a build-up of bacteria and old food can kill birds. If squirrels are a problem you can by rodentproof feeders. I also have one tube-feeder which is set within a sort of cage which keeps larger birds out, letting the smaller ones access the food unimpeded. Protect birds from prowling cats by planting something prickly and groundhugging around the bird table or feeder – Berberis darwinii is a good one, but you can also FRQIRXQG FDWV ZLWK D FROODU ZKLFK Č´ WV DURXQG the bird table stand and prevents them from jumping up. Water - A supply of clean water is very important for drinking and bathing. A sloping bath is best WR DFFRPPRGDWH GLÎ? water. Your feathered friends will thank you. Plants - Birds like cover so plant shrubs, trees and climbers. If you can manage it a mixed hedge RI KDZWKRUQ KROO\ GRJ URVH DQG URZDQ RÎ? HUV cover and food, and is also very pretty. Train honeysuckle and ivy over arches and pergolas. Pyracantha’Soleil d’Or’, Cotoneaster frigidus ‘Cornubia’ and rambling roses that will produce lots of rosehips are great for house walls and fences. If you have room for a tree try the bird cherry (Prunus padus) or a crab apple such as Malus ‘John Downie’. Nesting - Dozens of bird species make use of nest boxes. Put up new boxes now because birds use the winter to scope out good breeding spots. If you already have boxes, take them down, remove any old nests and rinse the boxes with boiling water to sterilise them. Come the spring put out some extra nesting material for them to grab: sheep wool, pet hair, wool scraps can all be pushed inside a wire cage or a terracotta pot Hopefully this has given you some ideas. And don’t forget to take part in The Big Garden Bird watch on January 28th and 29th Happy Gardening TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Happy New Year! Another busy month in Bawtry and Austerfield and I have enjoyed many of the activities that happened in November and December. Our 1st heritage weekend was enjoyed by those that attended and a great start to getting ready for 2020. On the Saturday, our community library was the start and finish of the heritage trail and it was great to see Caroline Flint MP coming to support the event and going around the trail. On Sunday, the church service led by Rev. Strickland with a talk on William Bradford by Sue Allen was very informative. Lantern making at the Study Centre, followed by a lantern walk followed by a hog roast back at the centre was a fantastic way to end the weekend. If you would like to follow the clues around Bawtry, do call into the library for a trail sheet. It will be of interest to both children and adults and you will learn a lot about the history of the town. Further details about our next event are below. I was delighted to attend the lights switch on at Austerfield and switch on the Christmas tree lights. Markham Main brass band got everyone in the festive spirit with their carols, carried on by the Parish Council and their mulled wine and mince pies. Bawtry Carbon and the Parish Council provided the lights, making a really festive event for the village. Re-lining on South Parade Unfortunately a few days before the work was due to start, I received an email to let me know that there had been a problem with the works and they would be rescheduled in the next few weeks. I keep checking on the progress of this on a regular basis. Do let me know if you are aware of other areas that would benefit from re-lining.

Heritage Quiz Following on from our weekend, there will be a heritage h i and d trivia i i quiz i on Saturday S d 7 January J starting at 7pm at Phoenix Theatre. Tickets are £5 to include pie and peas, teams of 4 with prizes for the winners. Tickets can be obtained from the library. Looking forward to 2017 As I look forward to the next 4 months, (there are DMBC elections in May), many of the hopes and aspirations of residents cannot be achieved by one person or organisation, so I am delighted with the way in which we are all working together more on many issues DMBC, Bawtry Town Council, Bawtry Residents Group, Visit Bawtry and community groups. This is going to make a difference throughout 2017 and beyond. The Neighbourhood Plan progression and the start of the community forum, heritage developments and the opening of the community sports pavilion are all going to improve our area which will be of benefit to residents of all ages. There are many ways for residents to get involved, but I realise that people are very busy, so please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any ideas or suggestions for what you would like to see happening across Bawtry and Austerfield. Surgery I will be holding my January surgery on the same afternoon that the Mayor of Doncaster holds her surgery in Bawtry library – Thursday 12 January. For the Mayors surgery you have to book an appointment which you can do by contacting 736000. Please feel free to just pop into my surgery. Please don’t wait for my surgery though and if I can help with any council issues please contact me on: Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk With very best wishes

Not only that, the company is also offering every aspiring business owner 10% off any of their start up packages for just entering. As Jim Doran, Business Mentor for Doncaster (Business) 100 Club, said “from listening and working with many would-be start-ups, the main challenges always seem to be around getting online or designing a logo. Things such as, ‘how do I make my business pop up when searched for on Google’, are challenges. People simply only know what they know and would rather concentrate their efforts on what they do best - their business, their trade - but the risk of ignoring what you don’t understand probably accounts for a high percentage of the 55%* of businesses that fail within their first 5 years.” For the majority of business owners designing and developing a website, a logo, setting up business emails or an IT Network, is out of their comfort zone which is why weSTARTany.biz has seen a chance to plug this gap in knowledge. “We completely understand the mindset of a new business owner”, states Ian Rouse, Creative Director of weSTARTany.biz. “You just want to get on with what your business does. At weSTARTany.biz that’s designing websites, branding and providing tech solutions. So to help you just get on with your business idea quickly we’ve launched a range of Start-Up packages full of web, brand and tech essentials suited to every start-up budget.” Fulfilling the dream of starting up your own business is now more achievable than ever (over 600,000 new businesses set up last year in the UK), with advances in technology, low start-up costs and the support of organisations like weSTARTanybiz. So if your New Year’s resolution is to set up your own business then enter into the weSTARTany.biz competition and give your resolution the kick start it needs.
