Bok Tower Gardens Announces Retirement of CEO David Price

The Board of Directors of Bok Tower Gardens today announced that David Price, Chief Executive Officer, will retire in June of this year, concluding a distinguished 39-year tenure with Bok Tower Gardens, the last 19 years as CEO and previously 20 years as Director of Horticulture.

Price joined Bok Tower Gardens in 1987 and has played a central role in advancing Edward Bok’s vision to inspire visitors to “make the world a bit better or more beautiful.” During his leadership as CEO, the Gardens experienced its most significant period of growth, including expanded garden spaces and programs, doubled attendance and membership, strengthened financial sustainability, and increased community impact.

“David’s work at Bok Tower Gardens has been transformational,” said Josh Webb, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “Through vision, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to our mission, he has preserved Bok Tower Gardens’ legacy and helped position the organization for long-term success. We are extraordinarily grateful for his impactful service.”

Among many accomplishments as CEO, Price helped lead a $17 million capital campaign to expand the Gardens and its reach. He also championed land preservation efforts

that have protected nearly 750 acres of surrounding greenspace and scenic vistas for Bok Tower Gardens, in addition to helping found the Green Horizon Land Trust, which has preserved more than 7,000 acres of land throughout Central Florida.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve Bok Tower Gardens,” said Price. “I am immensely proud of what our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters have accomplished together. I have full confidence in the Gardens’ future and I am confident in our ability to make the next steps forward in our transition of leadership.” Price will remain in his role throughout the search to ensure continuity and a seamless transfer of responsibilities.

long classics. With 15 years of performing at community and private events—including five years at the Florida State Fair’s Cracker Country—The Musical Hammers continue to share the joy of this centuries-old instrument. Don’t miss this festive performance filled with tradition, talent, and toe-tapping melodies.

Chef Matt will have plenty of delicious Irish specials and pints of Guinness for sale.

Budget-Friendly Black Bean Burgers That Don’t Disappoint

Let’s be honest. When someone says, “black bean burger,” your first thought probably isn’t “Ooh, yes please!” More like, “Will it taste like sadness and regret on a bun?” But hold up -these aren’t those dry, flavorless hockey pucks pretending to be burgers. They’re scrumptious, savory and genuinely satisfying. Packed with flavor and -- best of all -- they’re not trying to be beef. They’re proudly plant-based and delicious on their own terms.

So, why should they land on your plate?

First, they’re budget-friendly. Two cans of black beans can easily feed a family of four for just a few bucks -- no fancy ingredients needed.

Second, they’re incredibly healthy. Black beans are loaded with protein, fiber, iron and magnesium. They help lower cholesterol, support digestion and keep you full. Mixed with veggies, whole grains and spices, these burgers deliver big nutrition and bold flavor.

And third, people light up when they see a burger. Serve something healthy in that familiar shape, and you’ve got a dinner win.

Now for the magic trick. What’s the secret to a black bean burger that doesn’t fall apart? Bake the beans first. Drying them out intensifies flavor and adds structure. Most folks skip this step -- and end up with mush. Don’t skip it. It’s the difference between “meh” and “more please!”

The Recipe The Recipe

BLACK BEAN BURGERS

Yield: 6-8 servings

Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes

2 (14 oz) cans black beans, drained, rinsed and patted dry

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 cup bell pepper, finely chopped

1 cup yellow onion, finely chopped

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/2 cup shredded pepper jack (or cheddar)

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon coconut aminos (or Worcestershire sauce)

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Hamburger buns and favorite accompaniments

Optional but highly recommended: Sliced pepper jack cheese

Zesty Lime-Dijon Spread (below)

Preheat oven to 325 F. Spread beans on a parchment- or foil-lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes to dry them slightly.

Meanwhile, heat a skillet over medium heat. Saute olive oil, bell pepper, onion and garlic until soft, 5-6 minutes. Let cool, then blot moisture.

spices, breadcrumbs, cheese, eggs, coconut aminos, mayo, salt and pepper. Mix or pulse. Add beans and mash or pulse, leaving some texture. Note: This mixture is sticky -- chilling helps! Refrigerate for 30 minutes before shaping. To keep hands clean, oil or wet them slightly. Use wax paper to separate patties and prevent sticking.

Form mixture into 12 patties using a generous 1/3 cup each.

To bake: Place on greased, foil-lined sheet and bake at 375 F for 6 minutes per side. Add cheese for the last 3 minutes.

To grill: Use greased foil, cook over medium-high for 7 to 8 minutes per side. Add cheese for the last 3 minutes. Serve on toasted buns with classic toppings like lettuce, tomato and onion -- or make it your own.

And to top it all off, don’t skip the sauce. Every single taste tester asked for this recipe. Creamy, tangy and just the right touch of sweet, it’s the perfect match for these black bean beauties.

ZESTY LIME-DIJON SPREAD

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon lime juice

In Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, a colony of ants is forced to gather food for evil grasshoppers.

When one ant, Flik, dares to speak up, a confused grasshopper asks his leader, Hopper, why a single ant should matter. Hopper answers by flicking a grain of food at his minion.

“Did that hurt?” he asks.

“Nope.”

Another grain. Same answer. Then he rips open the entire grain silo, unleashing a torrent that buries his own crew.

“You let one ant stand up to us, then they all might stand up,” he warns. “Those puny little ants outnumber us a hundred to one, and if they ever figure that out, there goes our way of life.”

ly. And Minnesota proves that. Minnesotans have watched the chaos of this administration unfold. They’ve heard the President boast about deporting millions of immigrants for not entering the country “the right way.” They’ve seen nearly three thousand ICE agents deployed to Minneapolis—a force five times the size of the city’s own police department of 300 officers.

And Minnesotans answered: “No!” They banded together to protect their neighbors. They organized watch networks to track ICE activity. They sounded whistles and honked horns to warn others when ICE agents appeared. They recorded every encounter to expose how ICE was terrorizing their communities.

And together, they said: “No!”

They said “no” to ICE taking away their neighbors who have otherwise been upstanding, productive members of their community.

They said “no” to children being separated from their parents, with little hope of reunion.

1. GEOGRAPHY: In which U.S. state is the Devils Tower monument located?

2. LEGAL: Which U.S. Supreme Court justice served for the longest period of time?

3. TELEVISION: Which biker drama is set in the town of Charming, California?

4. WEATHER: What kind of natural disaster is caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption?

5. U.S. PRESIDENTS: Which president founded the University of Virginia?

6. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What is a young hare called?

7. CHEMISTRY: Which two elements on the Periodic Table are liquid at room temperature?

8. LITERATURE: Which 20th-century novel features the characters Leopold and Molly Bloom?

9. ASTRONOMY: What planet in our solar system is the farthest from the sun?

10. MOVIES: Which movie portrays the beginnings of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg?

Later, when the grasshoppers return to intimidate the colony, Hopper mocks the ants as weak and insignificant. But this time, Flik refuses to shrink back.

“You’re wrong,” he shouts. “I’ve seen these ants do great things. And year after year, they still manage to pick food for themselves and you. So, who’s the weaker species?”

Then he delivers the line that finally cracks the illusion of power: “We’re a lot stronger than you say we are—and you know it!”

Flik’s defiance motivates the colony. The ants link arms, rise together, and overwhelm their grasshopper oppressors.

***

It’s easy to feel small and insignificant right now, especially during these dark and troubled times. It feels like the country—the whole world, even—is spiraling wildly out of control. And it all makes you feel powerless—like there’s nothing you can do about it. After all, you’re just one person. What can one person do? Alone? Not much. But together with other people? Quite a lot, actual-

They said “no” to poor souls being packed into overcrowded detention centers and funneled into overseas prisons rife with human rights abuses.

They said “no” to peaceful protesters being brutalized for the “crime” of observing and recording ICE agents as they swept people into unmarked vans.

And they said “no” to the shooting and killing of two innocent people, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both respected members of their communities.

How many said, “No”? Tens of thousands marching in the streets statewide. In subzero temperatures. With hundreds of businesses closing in solidarity. In the first and largest general strike in the nation in 80 years. That’s how many!

The powerful and corrupt only win if we believe we’re weak. Like the ants in A Bug’s Life, we need to realize we’re a lot stronger than they say we are—and they know it!

Returns to Lakeland April 14-19

Special to T&T Magazine

We’re counting down to SUN ’n FUN 2026, and this year we’re going Red, White & Blue at 52! There’s never been a better time to experience SUN ’n FUN! April 14 to 19, 2026 we celebrate 250 years of America, we’re bringing more food, family fun, and convenience than ever before. As one of the largest aviation events in Florida and a major stop on the global airshow circuit, SUN ’n FUN brings together thousands of pilots, families, and enthusiasts for a week of unmatched excitement. From new dining options and family zones to express shuttles and a cashless experience—here’s what’s in store for 2026!

The Expo will showcase over 600 acres of static displays with all types of aircraft that will include Vintage, Homebuilt, Aerobatic, Warbird, Military, Light Sport, Seaplanes, and Rotorcraft. The Future ‘n Flight Plaza is a new feature with a focus on innovative technology,

aviation careers, and flight simulation. Children will enjoy the Aviation Playground that promises to inspire.

Throughout the six-day event, daily airshows include spectacular military demonstrations by the USAF Thunderbirds, the US Navy F-18 Super Hornet Demo Team, Tora Tora Tora WWII history demonstration, commemorative Air Force Warbirds, and the precision Ghost Squadron jet team. Historically on Wednesday, we have had a daytime air show from 1-5 PM, followed by a Night air show from 7-9:30 PM. THIS YEAR... in an effort to provide more time to enjoy everything SUN 'n FUN has to offer, we are introducing THE COMPOSITE AIR SHOW on Wednesday that combines the day show and night show into one! Our NEW Composite air show will start at 5 PM and run through 9:30 PM. Enjoy a new air show experience as the sun goes down and the temperature gets cooler!

Over 500 exhibitors will present an

expansive lineup of aviation-related products and services. Pilots and maintainers will benefit from hands-on workshops focused on maintenance skills, aircraft building, and dozens of topical forums for the aviation enthusiast. Youth will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM activities including flight simulation, robotics, drones, and wing building. There is truly something for everybody at the SUN n FUN Aerospace Expo! Weekly or single day tickets to the 2026 SUN n FUN Aerospace Expo along with prepaid parking can be purchased online. Tickets can also be purchased in person upon arrival. Children 10 and under are admitted free. Detailed information about the fly-in can be found at www.flysnf.org. The Expo is SUN n FUN’s largest fundraiser for the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), a 25-acre, 11 building campus dedicated to aerospace and STEM education. Approximately 200,000 guests, exhibitors, volunteers, sponsors, and performers are expected to attend the 2026 event.

1. What was Wayne Newton’s first No. 1 single?

2. Vicki Lawrence had a single hit. What was it?

3. Who sang the theme song in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film “Play Misty for Me”?

4. What was the original title of “Leaving on a Jet Plane”?

5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Never been this blue, Never knew the meaning of a heartache, But then again, I’ve never lost at love before.”

ANSWERS

1. “Daddy, Don’t You Walk So Fast,” in 1972. The song topped the charts on Cashbox and in Canada. Newton has performed over 30,000 shows on the Las Vegas strip.

• Fruit math: A tomato or an apple plus green bananas in a paper bag equals ripe bananas.

• Empty tissue boxes have so many uses. Try lining one with a plastic grocery bag and keeping it in your car for stray trash. Or you can use it to corral all of those plastic grocery bags until you need them -- just stuff them in one at a time. Lastly, and probably my favorite: Cut out doors and windows to use as houses for kids’ toys. Imagination makes the possibilities endless. -- JoAnn

2. “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” in 1973. Lawrence’s successes were more in the television industry, mostly on “The Carol Burnett Show.”

3. Johnny Mathis. His 1959 version was the favorite of all the covers at the time.

4. “Babe, I Hate to Go,” as written by John Denver. It was Peter, Paul and Mary’s version in 1969 that was the bigger hit.

5. “Stand Tall,” by Burton Cummings, in 1976. Cummings, former lead singer of The Guess Who, wrote the song after breaking up with his girlfriend of nine years. He still tours, this year all across Canada.

• “Jazz up your pancakes by adding pureed frozen blueberries or strawberries. It turns the mix either blue or red, and it’s fun for the kiddos.” -- V.R. in Florida

• “We are always prompted to choose strong passwords, but a random collection of letters, numbers and special symbols can be hard to remember. I make a strong password by using a coded phrase, like “My three boys are No. 1,” which might be “MY3boysR#1.” Just thought I’d share my trick, but not my password!”

-- R.W. in Iowa

• Keep a bottle of club soda handy for spot stains on carpets or upholstery. It’s good for more than just drinks.
