Please,” the young man pleaded. “My wife is about to have a child. We must have a room -- a closet, anything.”Well,” the innkeeper slowly replied, “there’s a stable out back ...” These are the words that led Joseph and Mary to the destination where Mary would give birth to the Messiah, King of Kings, our Lord and Savior. I am sure that Mary and Joseph had pictured something very different as she was to give birth to God’s son. Surely he could provide a nice room with some comforts that a mother birthing a child could use. However, that is not what was on God’s mind.

God knew that the world would want to know who this child was and many would come to see Him. I often feel that Jesus being born in a manger is exactly what the world was going to need - to understand who He was. Jesus is our King, but He was not born with the recognition in the community he would eventually grow up in. Yes, Jesus received some pretty special gifts, but the world did not understand who He was at this stage of His life. Jesus goes on to share with us very little over the next 30 years of His life. However, there is a gift in this that we may miss if we do not pay attention. Jesus grew up much like you and I would have grown up during his day. He got to run, play, go to school and I am sure at times he was considered the perfect child according to all other parents. During these years of His life he came to know personally who we are and how we would live. He was not treated as a King. No one came to feed Him or bathe Him like the Kings of His day would have experienced. No, He was just a normal guy like us, yet He was the Messiah.
The gift I find in this is the ability it gives me to seek Jesus without all the perfect words and phrases that we would have to use if we were to visit with the President. Instead, we can come before Jesus from the place we are at and seek him without knowing any special language nor having to get permission to come before Him. He is our King, yet He relates to us as common, normal men and women.
Just think about the guys He chose to follow Him, the Disciples. They were not the ‘cream of the crop’ recruiting class that just came out of college. They were the ones who were simply going about life minding their own business and working to care for their families. They were average, ordinary men like you and I. Yet they were able to come before Jesus and not only be in his presence but communicate with him. Eventually they would go on to communicate “for” him. This Christmas season, maybe it is time for you to just realize that you do not have to have all your ‘ducks in a row’ and be ready to live a perfect life in order to come before Jesus and just connect with Him. He has created you and wants a relationship with you. Let this Christmas be about you sharing with others just how much Jesus is like you and me.
