Jordan Liberty

Article by Becca Nurgitz

Jordan Liberty happened to fall into the make-up industry. One night, one of Jordan’s girlfriends happened to ask him to do her makeup for her before having a night out on the town. This was the catalyst that inspired his debut into the makeup industry, however Jordan’s interest in fashion materialized at a young age. A lover of art and pop culture, Jordan experimented with photography. “. I used to love the dark room in school. I modeled when I was younger, too. That was terrible, I was twenty and hungry all the time. I had even seriously considered going to school for men’s fashion.” The son of two artists, Jordan was constantly surrounded by art growing up. His mother is a portrait artist and one of his biggest inspirations. “She has always been first in line at my art shows.” With no formal training in makeup artistry, Jordan has forged his own path in the industry. There is a common perception that schooling is needed to get far in fashion, however many famous artist have no formal training. “I tell young artists all the time that you can’t buy talent, and I believe that. The best way to build skill, in my opinion, is private lessons or assisting.” Unfortunately for many young artists these days, the market is oversaturated.  “Too many artists; too many brands; too much information; too much misinformation – and it’s all more readily accessible than it was only five or ten years ago. Combine that with an overpowering demand to be original, and you have yourself a staggering recipe for disappointment.” Jordan insists that he overcame these obstacles by staying true to himself and sometimes thinking outside the box. He maintains that the industry is not an easy one to work in. “I have been criticized by peers in this industry for launching an educational brand that uses YouTube as one of its platforms. These are the same people that criticize me for often times using “real” women as models. Personally, I don’t think it takes a talented makeup artist to make agency models look beautiful. So I decided that if I wanted to inspire real people, I needed to prove that makeup can make anyone look like a superstar.

“I needed to prove that makeup can make anyone look like a superstar.”

" for young aspiring artist out there, keep your head up and persevere! In an industry that emphasizes the importance of flawless skin, it is equally important to have thick skin." Standing up for your beliefs is hard in any industry, especially when that industry is reliant upon “in-crowd” trends. Be prepared to have a lot of doors slammed in your face.” So for young aspiring artist out there, keep your head up and persevere! In an industry that emphasizes the importance of flawless skin, it is equally important to have thick skin. Keeping a positive attitude can also go a long way in the fashion industry. “My fabulous assistant Andrea (Martini-Flieger) always tells me that I create my most beautiful work when I’m at my worst. I love creating a mood and telling a story, and I guess I tell better tragedies than comedies. Go figure, because anyone who has ever met me can tell you that I’m a ball of (mostly ridiculous) positive energy. Inappropriate jokes help me sleep at night.” The ambitious Liberty currently has his own t-shirt line, is writing a book, and has his own set of online blogs and tutorials. After his makeup crew wore novelty shirts at past functions last year, people started asking Liberty for shirts. They were such a huge hit that a full online store was launched this past February with over three hundred products and almost two-dozen snarky taglines. Jordan`s book on the other hand is truly original in concept because it acknowledges budding makeup artists as well as the professional. Working alongside Jonathan Sorber, Liberty wanted to create a resource for artists with a different approach. The inspirational artist has also created his own line of videos available on YouTube. ``So many videos already focused on products and self-application, I wanted to focus on technique, hygiene, and real-world information and apply it (in HD) to a live model. Arvil Prewitt from Linear Entertainment Group joined the project soon after, and that’s when we took off. We even created a motion editorial, something that I’ve wanted to do for ages. I love what the channel is becoming.``

Jordan Liberty proves to be an inspiration with his positive attitude and drive for success. Liberty`s work is proof to young artists that hard work, determination, and the right attitude can go a long way in the industry. His online tutorials and works can be seen at  www.youtube.com/givegoodface and www.jordanliberty.com.
