A TRIP AROUND
THE LEAGUE Since 1989, baseball players have been flocking to Australia for competitive baseball – whether it be a professional looking to stay in shape, or an amateur looking to develop his game. These six great states that constitute the current Australian Baseball League have storied traditions in contributing to over 90 Major League Baseball careers. The Adelaide Bite represent the capital of South Australia and play at Norwood Oval. Adelaide, also known as the “twenty-minute city”, has been home for at least a season to seven Major Leaguers over the course of Australian baseball history. Potentially adding to that this season, are a group of MLB prospects who will put on a patch for the Bite. Melbourne Ballpark is home to the Melbourne Aces, which plays for the capital of Victoria. The city has been ranked as the world’s most liveable city in ratings published by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and top three since 2009. The most populous city in Victoria and second across Australia, has also tallied the most pros at 22. The Brisbane Bandits represent the state of Queensland. The capital got its name from the river it sits on, but the term Bandit sits even better. The first European settlement in Queensland was actually a penal colony located 28 kilometres north of the Brisbane Central 24
Business District. Twelve Major Leaguers have been able to call themselves Brisbane Bandits. The Sydney Blue Sox play at Blacktown International Sportspark, the major playing and training venue for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. 10 MLB players have come to the New South Wales capital to play baseball in the most populous city in Australia, which has hosted multiple major international sporting events. The Canberra Cavalry represent the the capital city of Australia at Narrabundah Ballpark. With a population of just 367,000 the nation’s largest inland city is located in the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory, and selected as the capital to compromise between rivals Melbourne and Sydney. Though not many Big Leaguers have come through the city, Cavalry are strengthening its roots in the league as the reigning Claxton Shield Champions, and fielded the first ever Australian Baseball League triple crown winner – Adam Buschini. Current Arizona Diamondback Didi Gregorious was a one-time Cavalry player. Almost 2 million people are in Greater Perth, where 14 professional baseballers have come to hone their skills. The Perth Heat play for the capital of Western Australia at Barbagallo Ballpark, where some of the largest crowds in the Australian Baseball League gather. As the name Heat suggests, Perth is known for an outdoor sport-friendly climate.
