2019-2020 SUCCESS STORIES Ester Maldanado

When Ester was introduced to TLNYC, she was a 14-year-old 8th grader who struggled with social-emotional skills and was initially shy and reluctant to participate in programming. After matching Ester with a TLNYC mentor, she moved from being a shy under-engaged student to one of the most consistent participants in the TLNYC afterschool program. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Ester became disengaged with her school work. Through outreach efforts and weekly mentoring sessions, Ester accepted her leadership journey and graduated her middle school as the valedictorian, earning the highest grade point average of her class. Ecstatic with her personal growth and success, Ester enrolled and will attend Williamsburg High School for Architecture in the Fall.

Angel Espejo

After moving multiple times during elementary and middle school, Angel finally connected with TLNYC programming in his 7th-grade year. Within a short amount of time, Angel became an advocate and leader for his classmates. While he was highly active in TLNYC in-school and out-of-school programming, Angel honed in on his basketball skills and became the Most Valuable Player of the annual TLNYC Basketball League. Despite traveling from the Bronx to Brooklyn daily, Angel maintained his academics and completed 7th-grade year just short of making the honor roll. With the support of TLNYC, Angel was able to skip the 8th grade and move to Eagle Academy For Young Men where he is currently a freshman.

Shelendice Tuffour

Shelendice was introduced to TLNYC as a 14 year of 7th-grade student who was held back during her younger years. Dedicating her mind to adacemic and personal growth, Shelendice is a hardworking student who is dedicated to setting goals that help her meet her personal mark of acheivement and success. Through support from the TLNYC Bronx Program Coordinator and a TLNYC mentor, Shelendice is not only set to attend her choice of high school but recently made the Honor Roll during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic showcasing a 85.2% Average. Shelendice is currently a freshman at Mott Haven Community High School in the Bronx.
