It always amazes me how Spring seems to happen upon us overnight. It’s my favourite time of year as everything seems to come alive from the budding roses in our garden, to the parakeet dive bombing us as we try to feed the dogs under the tree he has chosen to nest in. I have enjoyed receiving many photos residents are sending through of late and would like to encourage you to keep doing so. Although I may not always be able to feature your pictures on our pages right away, I do keep them all safe for a time when I have some colour space open to display them. These pictures are far too beautiful to print in black and white which won’t do them any justice. So, please continue sharing your views of Irene through your lenses... My diary is filling up at an alarming rate - I have plans to visit the local school carnivals, Irene Homes Thanksgiving and the latest Irene Dramatic Society pantomime, Sleeping Beauty. So much to do before the end of the year is here, I hope I have time to fit it all in! Till next month
Tracey I couldn’t resist republishing this picture posted on the The Village of Irene facebook page he was spotted stealing an egg for breakfast at the Irene Dairy Farm. Apparently the chickens were not happy! Remember to ‘like’ The Village of Irene facebook page so you too can enjoy such posts.

Polly got stuck! We had an interesting rescue in our garden recently. Wendy returned home from collecting friends from the airport and Brenda noticed there was a Parakeet sticking its head out of an old Barbet’s nesting log. Not wanting to disturb it they went back inside but returned later to find it struggling to get out. The two Retrievers were very interested in it and were jumping up to see what it was.
The Parakeet had climbed in underneath where the bottom of the log had been pecked out by the birds. It had then tried to get out of the normal entrance but got stuck in the process. Brenda had her finger pecked through her glove attempting to get it out so when I got home I put on my welding gloves which were impervious to attack! Tony and I then sawed the log carefully to extricate poor Polly. It reminded us of the old circus trick where the lady climbs in a box and the magician saws her in half! We finished off the job with metal cutters and finally freed the poor bird. Since the tools were by Stanley we named him that and he flew rather weakly, but much relieved, into the sunset. Moral of the story is that Polly must be careful where he puts his pecker in future! Malcolm Fawkes Lavender Lane.

Irene Art Exhibition The recent Irene Art Exhibition was a great success. The show was dedicated to two wonderful women who ran it for many years in the past (write-up below) and those who visited the show were invited to take a little ceramic creature. 27 Artists, young and old, participated with a great variety of items such as photos, digital prints, drawings, canvasses, watercolours, etchings, brass sculpture, pottery, glassware and fabric bags.
Dear Residents and ILA Members Private schools have just gone back to school after a good long break and before we know it we are rushing headlong into the last quarter of the year. Life seems to be so hectic with many demands on our time and energy and we hope that you are taking just a little time to enjoy the small things in our village that others don’t have the privilege to enjoy. Simple things, like walking the dogs or taking the children for a bike ride or a gentle stroll around the Oval at sunset. Keeping it clean Walks around our village are enjoyable not only due to the sense of security and community that we share and contribute toward but also due to our village being devoid of large amounts of litter and casual advertising that seem to plague every other residential area. We thank those who assist in picking up litter on walks and would encourage our residents to join the ILA in the removal of illegal advertising by removing street pole ads and stickers on everything from sub stations to dustbins and keeping sidewalks clean. (Should anyone want a litter spike, please contact Heather on 083 498 8777). Dog owners who walk their dogs on the Oval are beseeched to please take a bag along and pick up their dog faeces as this would contribute hugely to the enjoyment of the public space. Those residents undertaking building projects are reminded to please remove building rubble and materials on sidewalks as soon as is possible. Lastly, we would ask residents who donate goods of any nature to our guards to not leave the items at the guard posts as this creates a negative first impression of our village. Should you wish to give anything to the guards please could we ask you to make arrangements to have the items delivered to the Oval for appropriate storage until they can be removed? Our village is beautiful and we would like to keep it that way! Security Crime has remained very low over the last while. This good run is in no way an opportunity to relax and we ask our villagers to remain alert and vigilant on their own properties to ensure that every effort is made to eliminate crime altogether.
The electric fence upgrade is scheduled for completion over two or three months and is progressing well with work currently proceeding from to Alexandra Road to Albert Rd. All gate cameras are fully operational with the LPR (license plate recognition) cameras recording the registration numbers of all cars entering and leaving the village. These numbers are then immediately compared with the SAPS database for stolen or suspicious vehicles. The overview cameras that have been installed at the gates record all activity at the gate and the surrounding area for reference in the event of an incident. Our guards We believe that some of our guards have the tendency to ask residents for donations at the gates. Residents are requested to not adhere to these requests but please to report the incident to the Village Manager, Jan Swanepoel. Please also notify your domestic workers not to loan any money to the guards as this leads to confrontation when money is not returned. Leaving Irene? Residents are kindly requested to let Alyson or Jan know if they are planning to leave Irene or sell their home. It is important that with the upgrade and implementation of infrastructure and new technology, we encourage all new owners to support our security scheme. We still find that newcomers are unaware of the ILA and we would appreciate the contact details of new tenants or buyers. Membership Our services are dependent on the support of our membership. However, the ILA needs to grow to cover costs and improvements in the future. Should you not currently be a member and would like to contribute toward the on-going security of our village, please contact Jan or Alyson. Contact numbers: Alyson Lea-Cox:

Irene Primary School’s science stars shine at Regional Science Expo
On the 23 and 24 September 2013, 13 learners from Irene Primary school participated in the Northern Gauteng Regional Science Expo for Young Scientists. They displayed 11 projects on a wide variety of topics ranging from “what are the most effective study methods” to “which charcoal burns best?”. In total 64 schools participated with 386 projects on display. These were judged by 137 judges, including Irene residents. The standard of the competition was very high and many commented on the talent of the primary and secondary school learners. Irene learners had a wonderful experience sharing their knowledge with their fellow participants and explaining their scientific research to the members of the public. Their hard work and that of their teachers led by Mrs Lizan Lalk paid off and all the learners achieved medal status beyond the certificates rewarding participation. In total three projects achieved gold namely, Aryan Jaynarayan (Grade 5), Kirsten Raubenheimer (Grade 7), Shenica Redhi (Grade 7), three projects were awarded silver namely Gina Balducci, Brittney Gierdien and Bronwyn McCall (joint) as

Halloween At the last few Halloween evenings, parents expressed how difficult it was to walk around the whole of Irene looking for participating homes. This year we are trying something different! The Irene Association has kindly donated the use of the hall for a fun Halloween community event. We are asking the members of our community who normally participate and decorate their houses would come and rather decorate half a trestle table with their own Halloween things and put out candy for the kids. This way the kids can safely walk around and have fun seeing all the different tables! We are asking for a small table decor fee of R10 for half a table or R20 if you want a whole table. This money will be used to get a prize for the Best Decorated Table, help with cleaning the hall and buying small prizes for the kids.If you are interested in booking a place, please email me at email@example.com. We can only fit in 20 tables in the hall, so book fast! We will also be holding a Best Costume competition for kids of different age groups on the evening sponsored by Scrooge and Marleys, who will also be there selling exciting Halloween goodies! So please join us in this spooktacular community activity: Friday, 1 November 6:00 to 7:30 pm Irene Village Hall. Please note we ask you not to park near the hall as it is dangerous for young children walking, please park a block away and walk down. see you there !!
