Dinner & A Movie

Lob Us a Pizza The Federal in Melville, Johannesburg, has undergone a complete makeover. Chef James Diack has renamed his Seventh Street eatery La Stalla (“The Stables”), which reopened last month as a rustic pizzeria. The industrial-chic pizzeria will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 07h00 until 22h00. Lovers of The Federal’s brunch need not despair, as a range of farm-fresh breakfasts will still be available, while for lunch and dinner La Stalla guests can

choose from a selection of well-priced small plates, a number of wood-fired dishes and pizza options, roast chicken, and fresh salads. Dessert will be gelato, served in cones or bowls. Most of the ingredients used will be sourced straight from Diack’s farm in Magaliesburg. For drinks, expect OC Brewery craft beer, a wine list featuring some quirky and affordable boutique wines, as well as some interesting cocktails. Facebook: @lastallajhb

Lady in Red

Winchester On an isolated stretch of land 80 km outside of San Francisco in the US sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), heiress to the Winchester firearm fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant mania that lasted 24/7 for decades, it stands seven storeys tall and

contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building it for herself. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters. This movie is inspired by true events.

Tokara winery’s hilltop location overlooking Stellenbosch is symbolic of the towering reputation of its wines, their Reserve wines in particular, which are defined by origin and vintage expression. The Tokara Director’s Reserve Red 2013 is a blend of 67 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 16 % Merlot, 7 % Petit Verdot, 5 % Cabernet franc and 5 % Malbec. The wine has a stunning deep garnet red colour. The nose is characterised by red and black fruit with hints of dried herbs, eucalyptus, cedarwood and graphite, while you can expect flavours of dark cherries, raspberries and blackcurrant. It can be enjoyed now, but will benefit from ageing until 2026, and will pair beautifully with veal Osso Bucco or grilled fillet. The Director’s Reserve Red 2013 is available from the cellar for R400 a bottle.
