We can all agree that we ended the last year with a mixed bag of events and experiences. In retrospect, the highs were extremely high and the lows were devastatingly low. Together, we trudged through a disorienting power crisis and also navigated unstable economic conditions, which resulted in many large public and private sector businesses downscaling – leaving many individuals jobless. On the flip side, South Africans were euphoric and rallied together when our beloved Springboks won the Rugby World Cup for our country, and celebrated when our stunning Miss South Africa claimed the title of Miss Universe! Now, if these are not shining examples of what we are capable of as individuals and as a nation, I don’t know what is. Now, it’s a brand-new year – and the beginning of a new decade, the 2020s. This is an opportunity to start afresh and build on our wins, while learning from our losses. While we celebrate the start of an era that fully embraces technological modernity with all its conveniences and efficiencies, let us not overlook the importance of being human and forging deeper, more meaningful connections with each other in this information age. The focus for SA Express this year is to continue to work on rebuilding our airline

to its former glory as the regional carrier of choice in the hearts and minds of all our valued customers. 2020 will see us announce and operate more new routes that will further strengthen our network and provide an optimised flight schedule for improved customer convenience. Re-energised and rejuvenated, we are committed to starting and finishing the year strong, by working towards timeously completing each of our milestones until we achieve our vision. So, as we all list our New Year’s resolutions and make those new goals, let’s also pull together and effectively use our skills and talents, like our rugby heroes have done, to take our country forward and make 2020 a great year! It is, without a doubt, possible! All of us at SA Express thank you for continuing to choose our airline and wish you much joy and prosperity in 2020. Always, Siza

MITIGATING RISK Kabelo Nkambule, the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer at SA Express, is responsible for the airline’s Enterprise Risk Management, which entails ensuring that effective internal risk and compliance functions are in place. He is also responsible for enabling an efficient and effective governance of significant risks, whether they be reputational, operational, regulatory or compliance-related. Indwe sat down with him recently to find out more. Text & Images © SA Express

Indwe: Please tell us more about yourself and how you came to be in your current position. Kabelo Nkambule (KN): I am from Mamelodi (Gauteng) and completed all my primary- and high-school education there. I am a University of Pretoria alumni and worked at UNISA in the Law Faculty. I also spent a considerable number of years working in the banking industry in various roles, before joining SA Express in July 2019. Indwe: What challenges do you face on a daily basis? KN: The airline business moves rapidly, which means that the operations are also fast-paced – one needs to constantly keep abreast of the day-to-day issues that affect the business. It is, of course, a huge task to accomplish that because every day has its own challenges. As a risk person, you have to understand the

10/

INDWE

operational issues and deal with different personalities – which can be challenging. Indwe: What types of hobbies do you enjoy outside of work? KN: I enjoy fixing cars, taking road trips, and I also enjoy seeing wildlife. Indwe: What is your favourite destination that SA Express flies to and why? KN: My favourite destination is Port Elizabeth because of its wildlife, numerous beaches, entertainment options, and the creative, beautiful culture of the people of the Eastern Cape. Indwe: Do you have any words of encouragement to young people, especially those who aspire to pursue a career in the aviation industry? KN: The aviation industry provides a rapid

transportation network, which makes it necessary for global business connection. The industry offers so many career opportunities for technicians, engineers, commercial pilots, flight attendants and so on. Most positions require working as a team, strong attention to detail, and being able to follow the rules and protocols. There are so many opportunities that await young people in the aviation industry – if they are prepared to study hard and work smarter. Indwe: What is your parting message to our passengers? KN: We appreciate our customers for choosing to travel with us. We value them and their safety is crucially important to us, so we shall not compromise on it. We always look forward to welcoming them on our aircraft and, more than anything, they must continue to make great memories from and to their respective destinations. /

She has experience performing on stages across the country, as well as for private dignitaries. Signature SA is a local boy band with five members: Joshua America, Lawren Jonas, Craig Jordaan, Royston Samuels and Waylan van der Heever. The second day, “Scintillating Saturday”, presents The Style Village, where you can enjoy the sunshine and horse racing with a dynamic 10-strong undercard, not to mention superb hospitality, local food vendors and the race for the coveted R1.5 million purse. Upping the ante is the 2020 reinvention of the layout, which means everyone gets a front seat to the action. Style yourself in L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate colours of “blue and white” and secure your tickets through Computicket – before they run out.

Breakout Events is excited to announce the South African tour dates for legendary band A-ha. The band will be visiting South Africa for the first time since 1994 – and you’re invited! Magne Furuholmen, Morten Harket and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy will be performing new and old, familiar and less familiar songs, as well as the 10 songs off their record-breaking 1985 debut album Hunting High and Low in the running order of the original release. By October 2010, A-ha had played the whole of Hunting High and Low just twice, first at the Oslo Concert Hall and then at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Now, from France to Poland and from Germany to South Africa, audiences will have the chance to experience A-ha revisiting their first album while staying faithful to its spirit.

HIV prevention is vital in the fight against Aids, requiring a multi-faceted approach that includes education as well as biomedical tools (condoms, antiretrovirals, and voluntary medical male circumcision) to reduce the number of new infections. Combining these prevention tools with comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health and rights programmes is the cornerstone of the South Africa national prevention strategy. Despite this, 240,000 South Africans were newly infected with HIV last year. As children across the region begin a new school year, the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which provides HIV-related care to over 1.3 million patients across 43 countries, proposes that in addition to biomedical prevention tools, parents and schools educate young people about healthy sexuality in order to stay safe from HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and unplanned pregnancies. AHF calls on government to #KeepThePromise of an Aids-free generation by rolling out ageappropriate, comprehensive sexuality education for all learners. The Ndlovu Youth Choir is known for its colourful costumes and dynamic performances.

A SONG OF HOPE AND SUNSHINE THE NDLOVU YOUTH CHOIR The Ndlovu Youth Choir caught the world’s attention after their heart-stopping performances on America’s Got Talent propelled them all the way to the show’s final round.

The choir’s energetic performances at America’s Got Talent stunned the world.

For Schmitt, singing in a choir isn’t simply about creating beautiful music. It’s also about teamwork, discipline and cohesion – and it’s ‘very powerful’.

The performers’ joy is palpable as they do what they do best.

/ There are certain sounds that are intrinsically South African: the crashing rumble of a Highveld thundershower; the rhyming shout of a water seller on Clifton beach in Cape Town; and the irrepressible joy of a youth choir as embodied in the Ndlovu Youth Choir. Just 12 short months ago, few South Africans had heard of the choir. That was before their cover of Ed Sheeran’s smash hit Shape of You and the video that went viral on Facebook, the brightness of the chorister’s outfits holding a mirror to the vibrancy that poured out with their voices. Then came another video, circulated in July 2019, showing the usually impassive face of notoriously dour Simon Cowell visibly moved as he judged the choir’s performance on America’s Got Talent. Few South Africans were able to watch the clip without shedding a tear, particularly as they watched the youngsters who had just taken part on one of the world’s glitziest, most glamorous stages describe their childhoods in the poverty-stricken village of Moutse in Limpopo.

24/

“I honestly thought that I was being pranked by Darren Simpson when I received the call from America’s Got Talent, asking us to send an audition tape,” choirmaster Ralff Schmitt recalls. He explains that it was that Shape of You video that earned them a spot on the show after it had been seen by talent scouts. That had been in March 2019 – and what followed was a “glorious tsunami”. Schmitt explains that the choir got its start in 2009, initially as an after-school activity that was part of the broader Ndlovu Care Group. The group itself provides medicine, nutrition, infrastructure, childcare and other resources for the village, which has been badly affected by HIV and Aids. In fact, it was because of the orphans that the choir was transformed into a jobcreation project two years ago. “Many of the choristers battled to get jobs once they were ready to leave school, and tertiary studies usually weren’t an option. So, we looked at ways to generate income from their singing,” Schmitt says. That started with making the group more marketable, which is why Schmitt was invited to join the

team. A former member of the Drakensberg Boys Choir, he had worked with many similar groups throughout South Africa. But, although the young peoples’ talent was immediately apparent to him, the rest of the country was less enthusiastic. In fact, bookings were scant for the first six months of the choir’s existence. Then came that ground-breaking video, which sparked international interest. How did the choristers experience the States? “Interestingly, no one was blown away by what they saw overseas – probably because they grew up with so little. That somehow made it easier to take things in our stride, including the performances. We genuinely thought that each would be our last, so we focused on being in the moment and enjoying it as much as we could.” For Schmitt, singing in a choir isn’t simply about creating beautiful music. It’s also about teamwork, discipline and cohesion – and it’s “very powerful”. That’s what he reminded the youngsters of before they took to the stage in the United States. “None of us ever imagined

that we would have an experience like this – myself included. Just before we went on, I advised them to watch everyone involved in the production, because that’s what true excellence looks like. I told them to pursue it, channel it and apply it wherever they could.” When the team reached the semi-finals, he had more advice for them. “I asked them what they believed their worth was, and I reminded them that if they didn’t try that day, they’d never know for sure.” As it turns out, that worth is rather exceptional. They may not have won the competition, but they walked away with a record deal from Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco Music, and a renewed status as icons in their community. Admittedly, this has come with its own challenges. In a poor community, it’s only natural that people look to their role models for assistance, and the choristers are trying to come to terms with this at the same time as dealing with a suddenly frenetic schedule that involves commitments around the globe. In fact, Schmitt reveals that far from enjoying a lengthy recording session, the choir snatched moments between performances to create their album. Not that the end result was anything less than spectacular, as evidenced by the phenomenal success during its first week

26/

of release. “We debuted at number one on iTunes,” Schmitt enthuses. This is a feat made all the more noteworthy given that Coldplay’s latest album dropped at the same time. What’s next for the choir? “Your guess is as good as mine!” Schmitt says. A primary focus right now is looking after the choristers’ skills and educational needs. “You can’t stay in a youth choir indefinitely. At some point you have to age out,” he points out. And so, the choir is providing skills development programmes for older choir members, while tutoring younger choristers to ensure they don’t fall behind in their schoolwork during their travels. The group is also sifting through their many offers and invitations to find those that fit. Now that they know many more opportunities are coming their way, they’re being canny about which they accept. With the choir members ranging in age between 13 and 27, it’s their best interests, rather than commercial imperatives, that guide Schmitt’s choices as choirmaster. While Schmitt works to balance the challenges of sudden fame and popularity, he’s also developing new material constantly. “We have to keep reinventing ourselves while staying true to our core,” he points out. “We’re just taking each moment as it comes.” /

THE DEBUT ALBUM The Ndlovu Youth Choir’s highly anticipated album Africa is a spectacular representation of the choir from Limpopo that stole the hearts of millions. The 11-track offering delivers the signature songs that took a choir from the village of Moutse to the stage of a talent search show that draws 10 million viewers each season in America alone. It also includes an impeccably chosen repertoire of South African and international tracks, as well as the choir’s first original song – “Believe” – written by their choirmaster, conductor and artistic director, Ralf Schmitt. For the avid twitcher, there are over 500 species of birds to look out for during game drives.

/ Whether you are a first-timer or seasoned regular, here are five reasons to visit the vast wilderness of the Kruger, according to Danny Bryer, area director of sales and marketing for Protea Hotel by Marriott. A Change of Pace A day in the bush begins early and is full of small moments to savour, such as gently waking up to an orchestra of birdsong instead of your alarm, or watching elephants take a long, cool drink at a watering hole. A safari holiday in the Kruger National Park is the perfect place to forget your nine-to-five schedule and reset your clock to Africa’s natural rhythm. Whether it’s savouring a cup of coffee while watching a sunrise over the African bush on an early-morning game drive, or settling down after an adventurous day with a sundowner drink at the stunning infinity pool of the newly redesigned Protea Hotel by Marriott Kruger Gate (which overlooks the park and allows you an up-close view of the wildlife), there is no better place to unwind.

A Family-Friendly Holiday The endless sightings of wildlife offer parents the perfect opportunity to teach little ones about respecting and caring for our country’s natural heritage. A family holiday to Kruger is suitable for all ages, and there is a range of experiences on offer – from bush walks to guided safari tours and night drives. Embrace quality time with your family during a game drive in your own vehicle and at your own pace, with stops at rest camps for refreshments or self-catered snacks. The Kruger National Park is a worldclass holiday destination, conveniently located within driving distance of major cities, such as Nelspruit and Johannesburg. There are also airports in Skukuza, Hoedspruit and Nelspruit, making air travel with kids a breeze. Unrivalled Plant Life The natural wonders of Kruger’s flora abound. There are 16 ecosystems within Kruger’s borders which are home to almost 2,000 different plant species, including over 220 grasses and over 330 indigenous tree species. One of the most well-known of the numerous tree species found in the

park is the iconic baobab tree. Able to live for as long as 3,000 years, these unique trees are most prolific in the central and northern parts of the park, but you can visit Africa’s southernmost naturally occurring baobab tree 25 km from Satara. All Creatures Great and Small Stretching over 20,000 km² of natural splendour, the Kruger National Park is roughly the same size as Wales in the UK. With over 1,600 lions roaming the bush, 13,000 elephants cooling off at watering holes, 37,000 buffalo grazing and 4,400 crocodiles sunning themselves on riverbanks, no two game drives are ever the same. While Kruger is the renowned home to the Big Five, there are many lesserknown animals that are just as interesting to observe in their natural habitat. Next

time you’re in the park, keep a careful eye out for the Little Five: leopard tortoise, rhino beetle, elephant shrew, ant lion, and the red-billed buffalo weaver. And for the avid twitcher, there are over 500 species of birds to look out for during game drives. Get to Know Your Heritage The Kruger National Park safeguards over 250 known cultural heritage sites, including ancient Iron Age sites and spectacular rock art. Three of these sites are open to the public and offer a glimpse into the lives of our forefathers: • Masorini is a late Iron Age site which was inhabited by the Sotho-speaking BaPhalaborwa people 200 years ago. The clay furnaces and huts at the site have been reconstructed and house a museum and picnic site.

• T he Albasini Ruins are the remains of a 19th-century trading post, established by Portuguese trader and later viceconsul Joao Albasini. This has long been considered the first European settlement in the Lowveld. • 500-year-old Thulamela is linked to the Zimbabwean culture started at Mapungubwe. The Shona-speaking Lembethu, who lived at Thulamela, believed in a mystical relationship between their leader and the land, and that their leader’s ancestors would intercede on their behalf. Whether it’s your first or 21st trip to the majestic Kruger National Park, the unrivalled natural beauty of one of Africa’s largest reserves is sure to make it a memorable holiday. /

HOW TO STICK TO YOUR GUNS THIS TIME AROUND THE POWER OF GOAL INFRASTRUCTURE Every year, most of us make New Year’s resolutions. Eat healthier. Exercise regularly. Invest more in valued relationships. Learn a language. And so on. Often, they are the same resolutions as last year. Why do our resolutions often so swiftly wither away? A prime culprit in this annual rollercoaster of optimism and disappointment is overconfidence in the power of our intentions.

Text: Peter A Heslin: Associate Professor, UNSW Business School, UNSW / www.theconversation.com Images © iStockphoto.com

/ The excitement of a new year – and perhaps the result of celebrating a little too hard – clouds a hard fact of life: Good intentions readily evaporate without a trace in the face of everyday experiences such as exhaustion, temptation and longstanding habits. Fortunately, academic research on goal-setting can help. Studies over several decades have identified some effective ways to overcome these common obstacles to realising your plans. Beyond SMART Goals It’s well known (and also true) that New Year’s resolutions are more likely to be attained if they are “SMART”:

• Specific (about exactly what you want to achieve) • Measurable (with clear indicators of progress) • Achievable (given your available resources, constraints and other priorities) • Relevant (to what you most value) • Time-bound (with a specific date by when you aim for the mission to be accomplished) Crafting SMART goals is a good start. But the odds of realising your resolutions will be improved by building what I call “goal infrastructure” – that is, resources that enable goal attainment. Below are three powerful ways to build goal infrastructure.

1. L ink Your Goals to Your Cherished Values Useful insights about how to do this may be drawn from a study of how a goalsetting programme could help struggling students improve their academic performance. The research involved 85 students at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Participants given the goal-setting intervention answered questions about their ideal future, qualities they admired in others, things they would like to do better, things they would like to learn more about, and habits they would like to develop. They then developed and prioritised the goals they were excited to pursue, before writing about the specific positive impacts

The odds of realising your resolutions will be improved by building “goal infrastructure” – that is, resources that enable goal attainment.

they thought achieving each goal would have on their lives and the lives of those they cared about. Compared to students in the control group, those who participated in this goal-setting intervention succeeded in significantly improving their academic results four months later. Why not brainstorm your own responses to the questions addressed by the study participants? Then develop a compelling rationale for working persistently to achieve your highest priority goal(s), by answering the following questions: • What benefits do I expect to flow from reaching my goal? • How might achieving my goal enhance my life and/or the lives of those I care about? Write down your answers and put them where you will see them often. 2. Create Implementation Intentions Implementation intentions supplement SMART goals with details of when and how you will act to attain your goals. Two types of implementation intentions are: • If-then plans (“If situation X arises, then I will Y.”) • When-then plans (“When situation X arises, then I will Y.”)

40/

INDWE

For example, “If I feel upset by an email, when possible, I will wait until the following day before sending my response.” Or, “When it is 17h27, then I will have left the office for the gym within the next three minutes.” Several hundred studies have shown that deciding ahead of time when and how you will act in accordance with your goals helps you get started and avoid being derailed by tiredness or other distractions. As a result, goals are far more likely to be reached when paired with implementation intentions. 3. Establish Peer Accountability What gets measured, gets managed! This maxim is particularly valid when you feel accountable for acting in accordance with your goals. The Agile software development methodology features mandatory morning stand-up meetings where team members publicly answer the following two questions: • What did you do yesterday? • What will you do today? Knowing that tomorrow you will answer the first question, helps brings focus to what you do today. Why not try this for a week to see if it works for

you? Another way to harness the power of peer accountability is to partner with someone else (ideally other than a life partner) who is also serious about adhering to their resolutions. Text or email each other what you commit to do each day for a month (for example, swim 1 km, not open emails after 20h00, no screens after 22h00, call a friend, do 50 push-ups, meditate for 10 minutes). Then, in a brief phone chat at the same time each week, ask each other whether you adhered to each of your daily commitments during the past week. Make no excuses and provide no explanations. Simply answer “yes” or “no” regarding whether you kept each commitment. The anticipated satisfaction in saying “yes” to those scheduled questions, as well as the powerful drive to avoid having to admit failure, can be a powerful motivator to keep yourself on track. Of course, there’s no magic wand to materialise your New Year’s resolutions. But if you are serious about making a change, play with the possibilities to discover what “goal infrastructure” works for you. /

THE SECRETS TO SUCCESS

Is it hard work? Consistency? Passion? We’ve all pondered the secret to success at some time or another. The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. From business leaders to sportsmen, musicians and scientists, when it comes to being successful, there is no single way of getting things done. That being said, there are a few principles that apply to all facets of life when it comes to being successful. Spoiler alert: It takes a lot of hard work and it’s not always easy.

Maintain Discipline Success is a marathon, not a sprint. You can have the most brilliant mind, concept or team behind you, but if you don’t have discipline, you won’t get very far. One of the easiest patterns to slip into while climbing the ladder of success is complacency. Whether this stems from having a job that allows too much freedom, or from reaching a goal early on and believing you can sit back and relax, a

lack of discipline to keep working towards bigger goals is fatal and will catch up with you in the end. Get Used to Rejection and Don’t Take It Personally Repetitive rejection applies to more than just those looking to make a name for themselves in Hollywood. Many wellknown figures such as Jerry Seinfeld, Oprah Winfrey and Madonna took a lot of

rejection before someone finally took a chance on them. JK Rowling was actually fired from her job at the London office of Amnesty International because she would write stories on her work computer all day long. It is in our human nature to take rejection personally, but the truth is that most of the time it wasn’t intended as a personal attack. The bottom line is you will get rejected at some point and it will sting. The good news? When you get rejected,

Commit to lifelong learning and realise that this goal, unlike most others, does not have an endpoint.

you also get a brand-new opportunity to try again. Take advantage of it. Hold Yourself Accountable At the end of the day, there really is only one person you can hold accountable for your shortcomings: yourself. It’s extremely easy to praise yourself when you secure an important client or successfully pitch an idea to colleagues. But when things don’t go as planned, or you don’t reach that deadline, the onus still needs to be on you. Holding yourself accountable for your own mistakes will arm you with the motivation you need to get where you need to be. It is human to make mistakes – the trick is to learn from them. Never Stop Learning When it comes to knowledge, there’s only one rule: You can never know too much. You could read every book or

50/

INDWE

article imaginable and there would still be things you don’t know. Commit to lifelong learning and realise that this goal, unlike most others, does not have an endpoint. When you’ve exhausted all the available materials, speak to people in your field. When you’ve run out of people to speak to, find new ones. The great thing about learning is that there really is no downside, and nothing to lose. Whether the commitment to learning is in a professional capacity or it is more about self-exploration, teach yourself until you feel like your brain is going to implode − and then keep going. Back Yourself They say it’s a dog-eat-dog world, and it’s true. You can have the most reliable family and friends, but at the end of the day, the buck stops with you. For this reason, it’s important to always put

yourself first. Although this may sound selfish and egotistical, the sooner you realise that everyone has the same idea, the better. If you have a goal, be it a professional or personal one, strategise on how you can achieve it and believe you’ll get there. You may encounter people who will doubt your intentions and you may even doubt them yourself, but the key is to back yourself. When you fail, and it’s highly likely that at some point you will, you’ll feel discouraged. There are very few instances when achieving a goal is linear. You will likely fall off the wagon a few times and be plagued by thoughts like, “is it really worth it?” and “do I actually want it that badly?” It’s during these times, more than ever, that you need to be firm with yourself. Remind yourself why you started − a little tough love never hurt anybody. /

PLAYING A PART IN WATER & FOOD SECURITY SBS TANKS

Proudly South African company SBS has been supplying liquid and dry storage solutions to the mining, municipal, agricultural, fire protection and water conservation industries for more than two decades. It plays a vital role in maintaining water and food security globally.

/ Headquartered in Pinetown, KwaZuluNatal, the specialist company has local offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with international offices in Ghana, Kenya, and the United States. SBS has built more than 1,800 tanks in South Africa and around the world. “We would like to expand our customer base. With this in mind, we would like to broaden our capabilities through regional market development and global alliances,” says Delayne Gray, entrepreneur and Group CEO. SBS goes way beyond simple storage. It prides itself on being involved at every stage of a project, from brief and design to installation and that all-important after-sales service. The close to 200 staff

members, who have a hands-on work ethic, receive additional training and are encouraged to adopt a mindset of continual improvement. “The company was built to service the community around them and has remained true to that vision since the very beginning,” Gray says. SBS Tanks are ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001-accredited. The wall panels and roof sheets of all SBS Tanks are made of zincalume (a combination of zinc and aluminium), which renders the tanks resistant to corrosion. All tanks are fitted with an approved liner, tested for use in contact with drinking water that prevents water from getting to the wall panels. The company supplies tanks with capacities from 12 KL right up to 3.3 ML, and the

tanks are versatile, with a wide range of standard and special fittings available. SBS Agri, another division of the company, boasts a combined 40 years’ experience in the agricultural sector. It offers bespoke wet and dry storage solutions, including a complete range of silos, and conveying and drying equipment for the storage and processing of grain. Inefficient grain storage has been a problem in South Africa, and SBS Agri has developed a range of grain storage hoppers that do not require electricity to operate. They can, therefore, be used by rural farming communities that are “off the grid”. For more information, please visit www.sbstanks.com. /

/ BMW’s Gran Coupè suffix alludes to its four-door coupé design that dates back to the 6 Series Gran Coupè, which was based on the then 5 Series’ underpinnings but skinned in the sleeker lines of the 6 Series Coupè. It is a practical solution to a market that finds a two-door coupé impractical, but a conventional sedan staid. Since then, the Gran Coupè plate has adorned the 4 Series Gran Coupè and, most recently, the 2 Series Gran Coupè. Innovative Style The front-end of the 8 Series Gran Coupè takes on the visage of its coupé

sibling, but has a slightly taller windscreen and roof, which equates to a roomier cabin for both front and rear passengers. In an effort to keep the weight of the Gran Coupè down – thereby ensuring that, for the most part, it steers as well as the coupé variant – the bonnet is made from aluminium, while the boot lid is moulded from composite plastic. You can even specify a carbon-fibre roof, should you so wish. As a result, the Gran Coupè weighs only 70 kg more than the coupé. The cabin, meanwhile, features a 2+2 seating configuration with the rear offering surprisingly good legroom –

allowing even the lankiest of individuals to lounge in relative comfort. The rest of the cabin appointments are identical to that of the coupé, including the 10” touchscreen infotainment screen and 12.3” digital instrument cluster. You also get the voiceactivated command system for various vehicle functions. Choose Your Flavour There are three engine derivatives available from launch: the 3.0-litre turbo inline-six with 250 kW and 500 Nm (840i); a 3.0-litre turbo diesel with 235 kW and 680 Nm (840d); and a 4.4-litre twin-

turbo V8 petrol with 390 kW and 750 Nm (M850i). For those with an even higher penchant for performance, the M8 Gran Coupè will be offered at a later stage. All models come standard with an eightspeed automatic gearbox and, save for the 840i, xDrive all-wheel-drive traction. There’s also rear-wheel steer on offer to make the vehicle more agile.

corners in Sport+ mode, and decidedly comfortable when pottering about town in its softest Comfort setting. There weren’t any tangible dynamic drawbacks compared to the coupé’s sporty disposition, and I reckon this is the 8 Series to buy if you are looking for something practical with a sporty temperament. How Does It Stack Up?

On the Road At launch, only the 840i was available for us to sample and, while it offered enough get up and go and a glorious straight-six howl, I’m of the view that the turbodiesel 840d would be better suited for this application. That said, the Gran Coupè feels surefooted when hurled into

56/

INDWE

The 8 Series Gran Coupè plays in a very elite segment, occupied by the Porsche Panamera, Mercedes-Benz GT 4 Door and the Maserati Quattroporte. These all pander to the niche buyer who appreciates style without sacrificing on performance and practicality. Having driven all but the Mercedes-Benz, the 8 Series feels right

up there with the best of them – it looks the part, is well appointed, and has a drive polish to back it up. Final Say In a segment that is decidedly niche, there’s a premium price to pay when it comes to that and, with a starting price of just over R1,3 million for the 840i and rising to R1,8 million odd for the M850i, it will remain a relatively rare sight on the roads – much like the 6 Series Gran Coupè that went before it. Exclusivity, then, seems to be one of the four-door coupé genre’s biggest selling points and for those shopping in this luxury pond, the 8 Series Gran Coupé makes for a fetching catch. /

HUMANITY’S BIRTHPLACE WHY EVERYONE ALIVE TODAY CAN CALL NORTHERN BOTSWANA HOME

Where was the evolutionary birthplace of modern humans? The East African Great Rift Valley has long been the favoured contender – until today.

It is now clear our ancestors must have dispersed from a region south of the Zambezi River. / Our new research has used DNA to trace humanity’s earliest footsteps to a prehistoric wetland called MakgadikgadiOkavango, south of the Great Zambezi River. Our analysis, published in Nature, shows that the earliest population of modern humans (Homo sapiens) arose 200,000 years ago in an area that covers parts of modern-day Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. A Global Family Tree We pinpointed this region by studying mitochondrial DNA, known as the “mitogenome”. Unlike nuclear DNA, which is passed on by both mother and father, mitochondrial DNA is passed on only by the mother, which means it is not jumbled up in each generation. If we think of all modern humans as occupying a particular place on a huge family tree, logically we should find the most diverse mitogenomes at the very

base of the tree, because it is the ultimate source of all the various branches. We already know that genetic data points to Southern Africa as the cradle of humanity (unlike fossil evidence, most of which has been found in East Africa). But we wanted to refine our search still further, to pinpoint the exact location where humans first evolved. To do this, we turned our attention to a group of people known as the Khoisan. The Khoisan have the most diverse mitogenomes of anyone on Earth, which suggests their DNA most closely resembles that of our shared common ancestors. If we all sit on branches of the human family tree, then the Khoisan are the tree’s trunk. Linguistically, the Khoisan people are click speakers, while culturally Khoisan are foragers, with groups of San people still practising the old ways of life – hunting and gathering for subsistence. Members of our research team have spent a decade working

INDWE

/59

with Khoisan communities, as well as people from other ethnicities and language groups, in Namibia and South Africa. By generating mitogenome data for around 200 rare or newly discovered sub-branches of Khoisan lineages, and merging them with all available data, we were able to zoom in on the very base of our evolutionary tree. It is now clear our ancestors must have dispersed from a region south of the Zambezi River. This is consistent with geographical, archaeological and climate data, including the fact that this area would have been a fertile wetland at the time the first modern humans emerged. Lush Landscapes Geological evidence suggests that at this time, the prehistoric Lake Makgadikgadi that had dominated the region for millions of years had begun to break up through the shifting of the land. This would have created a vast wetland region, ideal for sustaining life. But if it was so ideal, why

60/

INDWE

did our ancestors begin to explore other places between 130,000 and 110,000 years ago, first heading northeast and later southwest from the ancestral home? Climate data suggests that at around that time, the region experienced a wideranging and severe drought. Notably, about 130,000 years ago humidity increased to the northeast of the homeland, and 110,000 years ago the same happened to the southwest. We speculate that this created passages of lush vegetation for our ancestors to leave the homeland, most likely following the game animals that were also forging into new regions. What’s more, our genetic data suggests the southerly migrants went on to inhabit the entire southern coast of Africa, with multiple sub-populations and huge population growth. Archaeological findings from the Blombos Cave in South Africa have shown this region to be rich in evidence for human cognitive behaviour as early as 100,000 years ago.

Again, we were amazed at how well we could match timeline data, crossing different, yet complementary disciplines that have historically not worked together. This also allowed us to further speculate about the success of the southerly migrants being attributed to adapting their skills to the abundance of life in the oceans. These earliest explorers left behind a homeland population – one that still remains within the ancestral lands today, having adapted to the much drier landscape. It has been a pleasure to spend the past decade engaging with the last descendants of humanity’s homeland, including the Ju/’hoansi people of the Kalahari in Namibia. The Ju/’hoansi, who still practise their traditional way of life, are excited about our findings. They believe our study captures a history that they have told for generations by word of mouth alone. This is not only their story, but all of ours. /

/ Hand-in-hand with these technological advances comes a new workforce. It is an ever-expanding pool of digital nomads who are used to plugging in anywhere, at any time – a dynamic bunch who eschew the constraints of working from one set place and doing the standard nine-to-five. So far, so good. But let’s remove the blinkers: While mobile technology may have allowed us to move beyond the four walls of the traditional office, allowing us to work on the go, this digital revolution does not come without its downsides. Taking It Too Far There’s a thin line between utilising technology to our benefit and taking it too far. Sadly, a growing number of people are overstepping it – so much so, that some of us are always looking at emails, chatting on WhatsApp and communicating via social media. Indeed, a 2017 study from the Office of Communications, commonly known as Ofcom (the UK’s communications regulator), found that 34% of people surveyed had checked Facebook in the past 10 minutes. In short, we’re addicted to tech – and it’s eroding our time and attention, particularly in the workplace. Every time our smartphone buzzes or our laptop pings, we get distracted. If our line of thought is

interrupted, it takes a while to get back on track. Precious time (and productivity) is lost. The misuse of tech can do more than compromise productivity; it can impact our mental wellbeing. The new “always on” culture is blurring the distinction between work and life. According to an Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) report (www.adweek.com/digital/ smartphones/), 80% of smartphone users say that checking their phone is the first thing they do in the morning. We don’t give ourselves a digital break and this can, according to Deloitte, lead to stress and anxiety, depression, poor sleep, and feelings of disconnection. So, while technology in the workplace is a blessing, it can also be a curse. After all, what business wants a preoccupied, ineffective, stressed-out employee? Luckily, there are ways to a more balanced approach to technology. Global flexible workspace provider International Workplace Group’s (IWG) brand, Spaces, shares a few steps to make this possible. Get Cultured Having the right company culture when it comes to technology goes a long way toward moderating usage. A healthy tech policy, with clear communication guidelines, is vital. Ensure, for example,

INDWE

/63

that team members are aware of when remote workers are online and when it is and isn’t okay to contact them. Create awareness through talks and workshops on how the overuse of devices can have detrimental effects. Establish Boundaries Help employees understand what is expected of them, especially when it comes to working hours. Make sure there’s a clear endpoint to their day and that you don’t overstep it. Just because someone can be contacted when they’re not in the office, doesn’t mean they have to be. Likewise, as an employee, if you’re working remotely, set your hours and stick to them. Make Productivity Count If you want your workforce to understand that disconnecting is okay, put emphasis on productivity rather than availability. Staff should not be rewarded for being at the end of a smartphone to answer the boss’ email

at silly o’clock. Rather, they should be given credit for completing a great piece of work on schedule. Get “Appy” It sounds counter-intuitive, but tech can be used as a means of avoiding tech. Give employees access to screen-time apps – like Space, Freedom or Moment which can remind them to take a break if they’ve been emailing or texting for long periods, curb social media use and create blocklists. Take a Break For the office-based, introduce a daily tech-free break when all devices are unplugged. Encourage employees to use the time to gather thoughts over a coffee, catch up with a colleague, or go for a distraction-free stroll. Some companies also limit or forbid staff from sending business emails after hours, even going so far as deleting any messages employees might receive on holiday.

Stick to the Plan Once you have policies in place, make sure everyone sticks to them. If managers and team leaders are constantly checking their phones 24/7, it sends out the wrong message. Those at the top should be inspiring the team to use their smartphones as a means of efficiency, not as a distraction. Keep It Real Encourage face-to-face meetings and social interaction with colleagues. There’s nothing like a group lunch or a brainstorm to foster team spirit and get the creative juices flowing. When a get-together takes place, ensure that it’s a screen-free zone. If seeing people in person isn’t possible, encourage employees to stay connected in real time by picking up the phone instead of sending texts or emails. Sometimes, it’s good to talk. My Life and Rugby By Eddie Jones Eddie Jones is one of the most experienced and decorated coaches in world rugby. His career has spanned four World Cups – from the 2003 final, working with South Africa when they won in 2007, and causing the greatest upset in the history of the game in 2015 when he masterminded the Japanese victory over South Africa. Most recently, he led England on their incredible run at the 2019 World Cup, culminating in a stunning victory against the All Blacks before falling to South Africa in the final. Learning from the extreme highs and lows of his own playing career, he shows what it takes to be the best in the world. Told with unflinching honesty, this is the ultimate rugby book for all fans of the sport.

The Confession By Jessie Burton One winter afternoon on Hampstead Heath in 1980, Elise Morceau meets Constance Holden, and quickly falls under her spell. Connie is bold and alluring, a successful writer whose novel is being turned into a major Hollywood film. Elise follows Connie to Los Angeles. But while Connie thrives on the heat and electricity of this new world where everyone is reaching for the stars and no one is telling the truth, Elise finds herself floundering. When she overhears a conversation at a party that turns everything on its head, Elise makes an impulsive decision that will change her life forever. Three decades later, Rose Simmons is seeking answers about her mother. She is drawn to the door of Connie’s imposing house in search of a confession.

The Flexitarian Cookbook By Ryland Peters & Small Today, many of us are looking to eat less dairy, meat and fish, as the list of environmental, ethical and health-related reasons for doing so stack up. The concept of not centring every meal around an animal-based protein is well on its way to settling into mainstream society. But out there is a whole middle-ground of home-cooks, somewhere between carnivore and vegan, who are doing their best to reduce meat and fish consumption, but enjoying it on occasion when the urge strikes. For these so-called flexitarians, choices are less about adopting a rigid regime, and more about an organic attempt to eat a mainly plant-based diet. This timely cookbook is a collection of modern recipes and comfort-food classics, all of which feature simple adaptations that can make them suitable for vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians and meat-eaters.

Meet the Crew

Carol Fry Senior Cabin Crew Member

Have you ever wondered who is flying the plane when you travel on SA Express? Or wanted to know more about what a job as a cabin crew member is like? Well, now’s your chance! Every month we will introduce a member of our SA Express family – because by getting to know them, you become part of the SA Express family too. Text & Images © Supplied

What was your very first flight like? It was in 1995, and I was afraid but curious. I soon got over my fears and anxiety when we were on board and had begun our initial safety checks. Since then, it’s been amazing. Where are your favourite destinations to travel to? I love Brazil – the place, the people, and just their manner of living life to the full. What do you love most about your job? It’s the various people you encounter on board, from VIPs and celebrities to just average people. The conversations you strike up with people are interesting and you are afforded an opportunity to network – not for business but to expand your circle of acquaintances. What’s your favourite passenger memory? A person who was travelling with her family from Johannesburg to Lubumbashi, in the DRC, had left her expensive bag on board. It was too late to send it with the ground staff as they had left the tarmac area, so we had to return to Johannesburg with the bag. For two weeks we searched for the bag without any trace of it, but eventually, I found the bag in the DM: OCC office where it had been kept for safekeeping. I made contact with the passenger and re-united her with her bag. She was so happy and relieved because it contained expensive shoes she had bought on her travels to South Africa. What’s one tip you would like to give passengers for a better flying experience? Respect the crew and be patient when we have delays. SA Express will never compromise on safety. What do you love most about flying? No day is ever the same. You are guaranteed to experience something different on almost every flight. /

Orders for special meals should be placed at the time of making flight reservations. The airline requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to departure in order to assist with confirmation of requests. Only available on selected flights. Passengers requiring special attention Requirements for unaccompanied minors (passengers under the age of 12 years) or passengers requiring wheelchairs should be stated at the time of making the reservation. Skycheck This is the airline’s special hand-luggage facility that assists with in-flight comfort, speedy boarding and disembarking. When boarding one of our flights, simply place any hand luggage that will not

Passenger Letters Good afternoon, During the early days of the recent SAA strike, I arrived at O.R. Tambo Airport from Durban at about 12h30 to connect with the SA Express flight to Bloemfontein, when I discovered that the flight (SA1011) was delayed. Naturally, I assumed at first that it was due to the SAA strike. However, upon enquiry at the passenger services desk, I was politely told that it was a technical problem. Despite this, from that point onwards, the ground staff were nothing short of faultless in every respect. When we eventually departed, the pilot and cabin crew were equally apologetic and extremely efficient and friendly. What is significant is that one may naturally assume – given SA Express’ recent challenges – that employee morale would be low. Yet, to the contrary: Every SA Express employee with whom I engaged on the day, displayed attitudes of highly engaged staff and the attributes of a high-performance culture. I am duly impressed with Express! Kind regards, Peter Streng Congratulations to Peter Streng who wrote our winning letter this month, and walks away with a Samsonite PopSoda 55 cm spinner suitcase valued at R2,799.

Good morning, I was pleasantly surprised with my recent flight to Lubumbashi, from the ease of check-in to the quick boarding. One of the benefits of a smaller plane is definitely the easy on and off. But what really made my day and gives SA Express the 10/10 I will rate you, were the hot meals you offer. This was a huge treat and I was happy not to get the kind of cold snack option which your competitors serve on their flights. I also want to give a big shout out to your friendly cabin crew! Keep up the great service. You guys are the best. Kind regards, David Topper
