The Newsletter of Temple Israel of Sharon, a traditional egalitarian community

From the Rabbi’s Desk

As you receive this, I am honored to announce that on Sunday, May 6, the Jewish community of Boston will honor Barry Shrage, the Executive Director of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, for 25 years of service to our community and the Jewish People. While he will continue to serve the community, this day provides an opportunity for a collective show of appreciation to him for his tireless efforts. The day will feature learning opportunities, a particularly poignant theme for such an event given his commitment to adult learning throughout his distinguished career. But Barry Shrage is about more than adult learning, and I want to take this moment to acknowledge his contribution to Jewish life and to the Jews of Boston. When I was growing-up there was, in many communities, little cooperation between synagogues and the Jewish Federations. Often they were seen as competing for the same dollars and leadership. The value of the synagogue was not recognized by many Federation directors and staff. Federations believed that they represented the voice of the Jewish community and that supporting synagogues, which had their own means of funding, was irrelevant. Furthermore, Federations saw themselves as organizing the service area of the Jewish community and did not see their role in fostering Jewish knowledge and education as central. Then along came Barry Shrage – a visionary, a committed Jew, and a strong advocate for the very ideals that we now know are crucial to Jewish survival. Under his leadership, the Boston Federation, CJP, has taken the lead among its peers in supporting serious Jewish learning for all ages. Under his leadership, CJP has expanded greatly its outreach to synagogues and its recognition of the primacy of synagogue involvement for the evolution of a strong Jewish future. Under his leadership, CJP has become a model for Federations throughout the country and the Boston Jewish community has grown in stature

and strength in ways that we can hardly imagine. All this and so much more due to strong lay leadership and Barry’s tireless efforts on behalf of all Jews, but especially the community of Boston Jewry. We rabbis often speak of what one person can do to change the world. Barry Shrage is an example of what we mean. He has helped to change the landscape of the community, and his life’s work to strengthen the Jewish people and see us flourish has born incredible fruit. And he does all this without fanfare, with humility, and with a personality that exudes warmth and caring in a world sorely in need of such caring. He has made our CJP one of the great Jewish organizations in the world, and for that we salute him. Personally, I have come to know Barry Shrage over the years and appreciate everything that he stands for and the way he has influenced all of our lives. It has been an honor to work with him to bring vitality and energy to the Jewish community. I wish him continued success on behalf of all of you who have benefitted from his work here. He is creating a legacy that will shape the Jewish world for generations to come. CJP is not your grandfather’s Federation. It is much more active in promoting serious Jewish life and learning and helped to create a great Jewish experience for all of us in Boston. CJP always has and always will deserve our support. But so much of its strength goes to the efforts of Barry Shrage, whom we honor this week. I pray that he will have the strength to continue his groundbreaking efforts and that the Almighty will bless him with the knowledge of just how much he is appreciated by all of us. B’shalom, Rabbi Barry Starr

LETTERS President’s Message March, oh March... Wonderful March! At this time of year we prepare Temple Israel’s annual budget. So many caring and concerned members are involved in this challenging task. We brought our “unbalanced budget” to the Board of Trustees asking for guidance, support and answers. So we adjusted, tweaked and massaged the budget, knowing that our ability to offer a variety of dynamic programs and unique services is based on the level of commitment demonstrated by our members. We cut the budget wherever possible, reducing spending as much as we could. But our situation is this: increased revenue is needed to continue to thrive as we have in the past. Should we eliminate programs and staff? I think not. Our Community, Our Commitment. April... The Commitments – sounds like a pop band from my former days in the music business. But no, in April we sent out our annual “Commitment Letter” to you, our members. We asked you once again to consider these questions: What do you value in a community? What do you value at Temple Israel? How can Temple Israel support your growth and community connections? We are proud to offer a Commitment System that allows each member to pick an amount with which she/he is comfortable without having to provide any justification for their choice. We can only continue to offer this alternate dues system if everyone pitches in to the best of their ability. As you are reading this, you have already received your letter. My hope is that you examine

your unique circumstances and relationship to this special place, your synagogue community. By increasing your Annual Commitment, you help Temple Israel promote a community which supports and nurtures families, youth and seniors. It is your investment in Temple Israel that allows us to continue to exist and flourish. “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). The past several months have seen us try out new programs, unique prayer services, and innovative incentives to welcome new families into our TI home. We are happy to announce the formal launch of the After School Adventures (ASA) program. A number of families have already signed up and we anticipate sufficient enrollment in the fall when it rolls out. We will engage a program director to lead this exciting venture, which is open to the entire Sharon community. Many thanks to Lisa Kritz, Alisa Levine and Marion Gribetz for organizing and seeing to it that ASA becomes a reality! Don’t forget, on May 18th we are looking forward to celebrating Lisa Kritz for her 25 years of dedicated leadership of Hertz Nursery School. We also extend thanks to Susan Cetlin and the Tiferet Committee for the latest in the Soulful Shabbos series. Judy Kaye and Bruce Phillips led 80 congregants, including many multi-generational families, in a lively and meditative Shabbat drumming and chanting service. We are grateful to Mark Levitt and his

Heart. My Dad will be remembered for many things, but especially for being a loving husband, a devoted father to my siblings and me, and a proud Grandpa to his grandchildren. leadership of the Ritual Committee and to Rabbi Ed Gelb for continuing to lead the delightful “camp style” services that are so well attended and such a success. Members come together from both our traditional service and our experiments to enjoy Shabbat Kiddush together after attending the service of their choice. The Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Membership and Cultural Arts Committees hosted a terrific spring dance n’ schmooze… it was a great night and we look forward to doing it again. It’s Your Party was also a great success this year-- many thanks to Neil Aronson, Lois Freedman, and Denise Gray for spearheading the event. Social Action’s “Mitzvah Day,” coordinated by Amy Katz and Marcy Kaplan, in partnership with the CHAI South Area Temple Collaboration – great to see so many parts of our community pitch in and “make a difference.” And we just keep going… We wish you all a productive spring and a glorious summer. COMMUNITY Youth Hello USYers and Families! It’s hard to believe that we have already reached the end of another year in USY—the year went by so quickly. These past few months have been great! We did an AMAZING job at our Purim carnival, seeing tons of families and bringing in a good amount of money for USY programs and our TIkkun Olam Fund. In April, we had perfect weather for watching the Red Sox play the Brewers with all of NERUSY, and our Senior USYers got to blast each other all night long in a laser tag lock-in with four other USY chapters. May and June are shaping up to be a great wrap-up! In May, all 1st-5th graders are invited to join us at Launch Trampoline Park in Norwood for a combined Kadima/Katanim event. We are inviting our first grade friends to join us so they can get a taste of what we have planned for them next year. For Junior and Senior USYers, we will be heading to Auburndale to go kayaking on the Charles. Afterwards, we will head to 16 Handles for some delicious ice cream. Then, in June, we are once again gearing up for a two-day all USY end of the year event. Last year, we brought you Camp SUSY and Color War. This year, all of USY will solve the mystery of “WHO STOLE STACY?” Apparently, I have gone missing, and it’s up to the USYers to find out who took me, where I am, and how I got there! USYers will meet at Temple Israel,

Hertz Nursery School It is hard to believe that another school year is drawing to a close. We have had a wonderful year of sharing, growth, and new ideas. We are blessed to have a warm community to grow in. I want to thank the community for honoring me on May 18 for my years at Hertz. It has been a wonderful journey, both professionally and personally. I hope to continue for many more years.

very exciting that every Hertz family can become a member of Temple Israel for one complimentary year. Temple Israel has embraced young families and made us feel very connected to the community at large. Hertz will host a new summer program on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July, a “playgroup” for incoming three year olds. There are still a few spots available if you’d like to join the fun. We have limited space available in our three- and four-year-old program for the fall, and the transitional kindergarten class has openings. We are excited to offer families the new After School Adventures (ASA) program for longer days as well. Spread the word!

Some highlights over the years include the ‘new’ Hertz space in 1994, our wonderful playground makeover, an amazing staff I have had the pleasure to call friends, and the many families I have met along the way. Hertz launched a new website, still found at hertznurseryschool.org, but with a whole new look thanks to Lisa and Evan Einstein.

COMMUNITY Israel Affairs

As the cold snows of winter become the warm rains of spring, our thoughts turn from indoors to outdoors. With this turn of seasons comes a natural shift in our attention to the joys of summer and the pleasure of the outdoors. Although the seasons change, the Middle East, unfortunately, remains static. At this writing we don’t yet know if the peace talks with the Palestinians will continue, if the war in Syria will spill over to its neighbors (just last week a roadside bomb exploded near an Israeli patrol and the Syrian army attacked two villages on the Lebanese side of the border), what the elections in Egypt and the trial of ex-President Morsi will bring, or what Iran will do in terms of truly stopping or instead tricking the West regarding its nuclear program. About the only thing we do know is that there is only one democratic, free, true friend of the United States in the region and that is Israel! Throughout all the turmoil of the last 60 years – from the Cold War with the Soviets to the struggle for global human rights to the many relief missions that Israel has sent around the world in times of disaster – only Israel and the United States consistently stand for what is right and just. Yes, there are tough spots and there have been times of tension – particularly as it relates to the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians. As both countries navigate the difficult waters of peacemaking, we, as American Jews, must support the safety and security of Israel and allow those who have the most at stake, the Israelis, to determine what is best through the practice of their democracy (the only true democracy in the

Middle East). How can we support Israel in its quest for peace? Well, that’s pretty easy: not telling Israelis what to do and what deal to take on one side of the spectrum; and supporting our elected representatives in their support of United States foreign policy to achieve a just and long lasting solution to the Middle East conflict. One of the best ways to show your support, without telling Israel what to do, is to join AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). AIPAC is an organization that is nonpartisan, has real clout, and can make a difference. AIPAC has a long track record of success in navigating the swirling waters of politics – always staying above the fray. In fact, AIPAC

never supports anything unless it is co-sponsored by both a member of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Ask any of the nearly 40 members of Temple Israel who attended the recent AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington what they think. I am sure that after five minutes you will want to sign-up and make your voice heard! Convinced? If you would like to attend the 2015 Conference at a reduced rate, please see Rabbi Starr or Dan Laby. “Jewish Trivia.” Will you be on the team that wins a prize? COMMUNITY Sisterhood

Mishpacha, family, is the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism’s theme for the year. We hope that you and your own mishpacha enjoyed gathering together at the seder table, recalling the Passover teachings, and sharing and appreciating the good fortunes we all have as families and as part of a greater community. We are also fortunate to have a wonderful group of dedicated, creative, and committed volunteers in our own Sisterhood. We are honoring one of these individuals, Roberta “Bobbie” Becker, as our Light of Torah/Woman of Distinction on Sunday, May 4 at Temple Israel. Light of Torah gives our own Sisterhood the opportunity to honor one of our own and donate to the Torah Fund Campaign of the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism, supporting our students and the institutions that give them the very best Conservative/Masorti Jewish education so that our teachings and traditions may be passed on from generation to generation. We hope to see you here on May 4 or at a future event of the Sisterhood of Temple Israel.

Brotherhood Shalom. I write this note on erev Pesach, where we celebrate our coming out of bondage and begin our journey to Sinai. We all remember our redemption from bondage through the Passover seder as we recite the story of the Exodus. We are taught that this is not to be a story of someone else, but that we, ourselves, are redeemed. It’s also the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, and just yesterday an anti-Semitic shooting at the a JCC and Jewish retirement home in a Kansans City suburb. Dark times. As we recall our journey from bondage to freedom, from dark-

ness to light, we in the Brotherhood remind everyone that the Brotherhood is once again providing each family in the Temple Israel community with a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remebrance Day) candle. This year the candles display new artwork, evoking the spirit of remembrance. This year, we in the Brotherhood ask you to take the time to remember the Shoah. This year we ask you to talk to your kids, remind them that they too came out of bondage. And this year we ask you light the candle and once again go from darkness to light. B’shalom, Ron Czik
