Exhibition „3,000 m Vertikal“

The Nature Park House Kaunergrat

The Nature Park House also houses a multimedia exhibition to bring visitors closer to the nature features of the Nature Park.

The Nature Park House is located at the look-out point of Gachen Blick. It is a successful unity between architecture and nature and a strong symbol for our collective vision. This is where the Nature Park is accessible and can be explored by all. Enjoy regional specialties on the lovely roof-top patio or visit the multimedia exhibition „3,000 m VERTIKAL“ - the Nature Park House is a perfect experience combining relaxation and learning about nature in a very pleasant way.

The Piller Moor

One of Europe’s most beautiful high moors can be found near the Nature Park House. Along the (mostly) barrier-free circular trail visitors may learn about the information of the moors, the particular moor flora and about the historically important peat extraction. Enjoy the wonderful view of the Latschen high moor from the moor tower. At the northern parts of the moor, manual peat extraction was active until 1973. It has permanently changed the terrain, remains fascinating because it shows transformation of these increasingly rare habitats.

CULTURE IN THE TIROLER OBERLAND Rousing folk festivals, enchanting mountain fires, colorful “Almabtriebe”. All this is an expression of our well maintained tradition. The festivals around the Tiroler Oberland are as diverse as the mountains and valleys surrounding our beautiful Resorts. In Tyrol, countless traditions have evolved over the centuries – until today a multiplicity of them are kept alive with much commitment. HIGHLIGHTS IN THE TIROLER OBERLAND Sauerbrunnquelle, Prutz (Acidulous mineral water spring)

The fresh mineral water springs from the “Engadin Window” is located between Pontlatz and Zernez. A shepherd discovered the spring in the year 1212. He tasted the water and noticed that the water had extraordinary powers. In Prutz the healthy spring water can be tapped for free straight from the rock.

Visit the Kaunertal Kraftwerk (power station)

The powerstation Kaunertal counts to one of Austria‘s largest reservoir power stations. It was built between 1961 and 1964 and uses the 900-meter downhill grade between the upper Kaunertal valley and the Inntal valley at Prutz. Shut-down silver mine

In Platzertal and Berglertal valleys, high above Tösens, the mines yielded galena, blackjack, fahlerz and copper pyrite until fairly recently. This was the most important ore deposit of the Landeck region. The facilities are now in ruins, but have been landmarked to be saved for future generations. Radurschlklamm (gorge)

A unique and beautiful gorge trail at the mouth of Radurschltal valley. A wonderful nature experience with bridges, waterfalls and rock formations starts just a few hundred meters from Pfunds. The Radurschlklamm is also called “Klammsteig”. Opening: The actual status you get in the tourist office in Pfunds (subject to changes in weather).

Guided tour of Pfunds

We invite you to come on a guided tour of the historic village centre of Pfunds. We visit and learn the history of many heritage protected houses, like for example the “Tower” – the landmark of Pfunds, the “Judge’s House” – a representative example for how people lived in the hamlet of Stuben.

FORTRESSES, CASTLES, CHURCHES Castle Sigmundsried, Ried

In the 13th and 14th century the castle was seat of the Counts of Ried. In 1471/72 the residence was converted into a spending hunting lodge. In 1550 the court of law was moved from Laudegg Castle to Sigmundsried. The castle had its share of owners. The last family of noble descent to live here were the Sterzingers (Martin Sterzinger, 1750 battle of Pontlaz hero) and they left around 1750. The groined vaults in the entrance hall were painted with renaissance flowers around the year 1535/40. Painted on the two spandrels over the middle column is a Coat of Arms from the same period. All these details and more are explained during the interesting guided tour. Contact: cultural society Sigmundsried, www.sigmundsried.at ACTIVE.SUMMER.HOLIDAY

Fortress Altfinstermünz

Fortress Altfinstermünz

Altfinstermünz is an old fortress that once guarded the Roman Emperor transfer route Via Claudia. Via Claudia stretched form the Po valley in Italy, crossing the Alps by the Reschen Pass and ended in Augsburg, Germany. The route was in use until the new Reschen Road was built (1850–1854). Characteristics of the border fortress are the machicolation defense tower, a passageway through the premises and the square tower Sigmundseck. A long cave leads up to the tower. The renovated chapel (2005/06) is located close to the old toll watchtower by the Inn canyon. The Altfinstermünz Association was founded in 2001 and the club has since actively worked to restore and revitalize the fortress, making it into one of the main attractions of the region. Contact: Ph. +43(0)664/3959471, www.altfinstermuenz.com Fortress Berneck, Kauns

The fortress of Berneck thrones proudly high above the entrance to Kaunertal valley. The oldest documentation of this structure is from a record dating back to the year of 1225, where it was mentioned as “Hegeno de Berneggo”. There are signs of pre-Christian settlements on this rock outcrop, mostly in the form of pottery findings. Fortress Berneck was built on a rock 130-m above the valley to secure the trade route over the Piller. Contact: Michael Schmid Ph. +43(0)664/75053179

ACTIVE.SUMMER.HOLIDAY

In Kauns stand three old and beautifully decorated farmhouses that once belonged to Fortress Berneck – the so called Schlosshäuser (castle houses). The history of Kaiser Maximillian is recognizable on the outer paintings. Among other things, “Wiesejaggl“ the infamous poacher who raised havoc in the Kaunertal valley during the rule of the emperor has been portrayed. Today, the 3 castle houses are in private ownership and local farmer families live here. Church of St. Georgen, Serfaus/Tösens

At approximately 1,100 m altitude, high above Tösens but officially belonging to Serfaus, stands the little church St. Georgen. It is one of the oldest architectural landmarks of Tyrol. The original parts date back to the 8th and 9th century. It is a Romanesque rectangular building with a wooden flat ceiling and attached by a Gothic ribbed vault. The chapel and Georg altar were inaugurated in 1497. The fresco paintings depicting the Passion of Christ date from 1482. The church also boasts a gothic reliquary (1240), of which there is a copy in the niche. Römerbrücke (Roman Bridge)

The locals call the old stone arch bridge located on the rocky westside of the little picturesque village of Tösens the “Roman Bridge”. The bridge bears witness of Tösens’ rich past and shows where once the narrow road to Serfaus was. This was possibly a piece of the historic Roman trade route Via Claudia Augusta, which ascended here from Tschuppbach up past the church of St. Georgen and to the plateau of Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis and then down again to Pontlatz by Prutz.

Castle Naudersberg

First documented in 1239 as the seat of the Master of Nauders, since 1300 seat of a country court of law. In 1980 the Köllemann family from Nauders bought the ruins from the Tyrolean government and started the restoration. The upper floors house one museum of court and one museum of history of transport and communications over the Reschen Pass. Contact: Ph. +43(0)50/225400 Castle Landeck

A great experience for the entire family: adults enjoy the new castle museum and the art gallery and children can win prizes by following the treasure trail and answering questions. Contact: office@schlosslandeck.at, Ph. +43(0)664/3633333 Kronburg, Zams

The ruins of the castle of Kronburg can be seen as an impressive silhouette on top of a cone-shaped mountain. It was built around the year 1380 by one of Tyrol’s most influential nobilities, the Starkenberg family. The pilgrimage hike to the popular shrine of St. Mary, which is located below the ruins and the ascent to Kronburg is appropriate for families. The fort was falling apart, so in 1985 it was restored to ensure that coming generations may admire the charming fortress. Fortress Laudegg, Ladis

The residence tower was built ca. 1200 and the first public records mention the structure in 1239. The fortress was the court of law for the Oberen Gericht until the 16th century and deteriorated after the court was moved to Ried im Oberinntal.

The fortress of Nauders was built between 1834 and 1840 by the pass road of Reschen, close to the Middle Age Niklas wall. The mighty structure made of rock blocks with crenels, reaching five stories high, served as a roadblock to protect the Inn Valley from invasion troops from Lombardy and the Engadin. The fortress is the only one of its kind still standing undamaged, and serves today as a military museum. Contact: Ph. +43(0)50/225400

MUSEUMS Local heritage museum in Pfunds

The museum is located in the hamlet of the ”village” near the parish church and exhibits objects of farm life. The building dates back to the 14th century and features a barn, a sacred room and a collection of arms. Included in this residential part of the building is a smoker, a pantry, a parlor, parlor chamber and a basement. People resided here until 1980 and no structural changes have been made for the last hundred years. This is why all built-in objects like the stove, the parlor fireplace, the tiled stove and the chimney are in excellent working condition. Furthermore, other every-day tools, equipment and objects can be viewed. It looks like the residents just stepped out and will be back shortly. The Greiter mill & saw is located at the entrance to the Pfundser Tschey valley. The mill is operated with a turbine since 1952. In addition to seeing the grinding mill, you can also see other interesting objects, for example in the smoker and in the parlor. The saw is located approximately 100-m higher than the mill and dates back to the 18th century. It was closed in 1973. The site is being restored since 1998 and is open for tourists and visitors. Highlight: “bread baking like in old times“ every second Thursday in the Greiter mill.

Winter Highlights

WINTER JEWEL IN ALL ITS FACETS Barely any destination in the alps collects all the amenities for the guests from the Tiroler Oberland. From the free main villages Prutz, Ried and Pfunds you can reach the neighboring countries Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The ideal starting point for unforgettable skiing experiences

The main towns offer in an ideal starting point to the most renowned ski resorts in Tyrol, an excellent infrastructure for family holidays and winter enjoyment of all kinds. Family, comfortable accommodation from 4-star hotel to private rooms and a well-maintained gastronomy in the valley and on the mountain complete the feel-good package. Despite many tourism innovations, the region has retained its original character. Intact nature and a pleasant coziness are then for many guests a reason to come again and again.
