LIVES IN HA R M ON Y W IT H N AT U R E
“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world”
VAN A-A N TA RA – I N S I DE T H E FO R E ST Vanantara for me is a reality that evolved as I moved from life in the corporate world to that of an organic farmer living in a village in Tamil Nadu. As much emphasis as clean food, clean air and clean water receive these days, they remain pieces of a larger puzzle that each of us need to put together ourselves for a more wholesome life. The peace of mind and centeredness that we experience in deep nature is unparalleled - the mountains, oceans and forests have a calling of their own; perhaps it’s something to do with being in the presence of a life more ancient than us, or perhaps as advanced as we like to think we are, something within us connects with the environment that all man evolved from. It certainly isn’t a coincidence that the greatest thinkers that we know of, right from the Buddha to Thoreau had their deepest reflection in nature. Across time and to this day the most contended societies and people in the world are those that live in proximity and in sync with nature. As a community, this is my hope for Vanantara to be that nature fix for every one of us - A life where peace of mind and deeper connections with family, friends and oneself is a way of being.
It certainly isn’t a coincidence that the greatest thinkers that we know of, right from the Buddha to Thoreau had their deepest reflection in nature . On a tangible level, Vanantara is a model to reverse climate change - I’m not kicked about Mars, and afforestry is perhaps one of the best plans we have both as a carbon sink and a vital source of oxygen to continue to sustain life on Earth. With the extensive planting we’ve undertaken in the monsoon of 2017, we have the beginning of what I am certain will be a lush forest in the years to come. Much of the joy will be in nurturing this plantation, seeing it evolve and knowing that we had a hand to play in it. See you on the other side…trust me it’s much better on the other side!

TREES & T HE VA N A Every season at Vanantara will bring something new, the blooming flowers and maturing fruits will keep the landscape alive throughout the year.
U I T I NG
A large variety of trees has carefully been picked to ensure a rich diversity that span a host of benefits. We’ve been careful to ensure that the trees we’ve planted take well to the Indian sub continent and our region in particular.
The varying shades of green and flowers add a riot of color to the landscape; the sound of nature – birds chirping, bees buzzing and the calls of a variety of fauna; the fragrance of flowers in bloom, smell of wet soil; an abundance of land and nature to explore, and the rich taste of freshly grown fruits and vegetables – “Shinrin Yoku”.
The stimuli we receive has a profound effect on how we feel and perceive the world around us, it has been our effort to ensure that life at Vanantara provides the elements for that heighted experience – and the foundation for all of this are the trees that collective make up the “Vana” at Vanantara.
The Japanese have a term “Shinrin-Yoku”, it literally translates to “Forest bathing”, the medicine of being in the forest.

“Bees do have a smell, you know, and if they don’t they should, for their feet are dusted with spices from a million flowers.”
BEE KEE PI NG , BUT T E R F L I ES P O L L I N ATI O N One of the most fascinating behaviors of bees is the waggle dance - when a bee is excited on finding a new patch in bloom, it communicates the location to it’s fellow bees in an exuberant dance that tells them the precise location – sadly industrial monoculture farming has given them less to dance about of late. What’s worse is that the large scale use of insecticides and pesticides has weakened this sensitive creature and led to a massive decline in bee colonies globally. More than honey and the humming bee meditation, our very survival depends on bees. Over the last century several botanists have commented that mankind would survive no longer than 4 years were bees to go extinct.
At Vanantara, in addition to the life we attract naturally; bee keeping is an integral part of the development of the natural landscape. The diversity of trees, and the practices we follow to nurture the plantation ensures that we also attract a vast variety and number of pollinators to our community apart from the colonies we tend to. It might not be too much to say that we would appear to them as much an oasis in a desert… and give them enough reason to start dancing again.

O R GAN I C FAR M ING In India we lack sufficient guidelines on the level of toxic pesticides and chemicals in our food, there is no watchdog making sure we aren’t being served poison on a platter.
“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison” By being in charge of how we grow our food, we take a powerful step towards being in control of our health. We believe Insecticide and pesticide free farming should be the norm and not the exception. The diversity of flora, the leaf litter that decomposes in situ, the farm animals that add to the interplay with nature, all go a long way to ensure that we can farm in a conducive macro environment at Vanantara. Manuring, mulching, crop rotation and companion cropping and are some of the practices we follow that allow us to farm sustainably.
A Typical Vanantara Plot
A mix of quarter acre and half acre homesteads provide an abundance of space for greenery and activity. Each plot has been planted with 40 trees – a mix of 10 fruit trees and 30 trees that are a balance of keystone, medicinal,
forestry and flowering species. The irrigation and maintenance of this plantation will be undertaken all year round by the team at Vanantara.
Water The water for plants and for domestic consumption is
channeled from a centralised flitration tank.
Natural Seasonal Water Body
Each plot will be provided with 3 kv of electricity - we see the electricity from the grid more in the nature of a back up given that the design of the homes ensure a minimal
requirement of electricity. Decks
Security A combination of natural cacti, barbed wire and solar electric fencing ensures that our community stays free of any trespassing. In addition, staff quarters stationed at every 10 acres ensures security 24/7.
