The energy of spring

C

ombining pleasant and useful things is always great, and that feeling of satisfaction can be experienced in many Croatian travel destinations. The destinations we present in this issue offer not just good rest, but they will also challenge you to have an active vacation, which is just what everyone needs after a long winter. Try something new, something you've never tried before, like kayaking in the sea, or in a river where you can explore hidden coves and landscapes, often only available to those who head out on such an adventure. Over the past few years, škraping and trekking have gained popularity, along with off-road driving through untouched nature, riding zip lines above enchanting canyons, and free climbing, while cycling, running, walking down thematic trails, diving, and sailing have remained just as popular over the years. You can enjoy many activities on the Pelješac peninsula, which is also the main topic of this issue of the magazine, which is irrevocably connected to another activity - windsurfing. True windsurfers know that Pelješac is home to the best surfing locations in Croatia, where you can catch the best mistral wind in

the Adriatic. Romantics are well aware of the fact that some of the most beautiful beaches in the Adriatic are found on the peninsula, while food and wine connoisseurs regularly visit to try delicious oysters and seafood complemented by superb Plavac and olive oil. New Zagreb Airport to be opened soon The Zagreb Airport is intensively preparing to open its new passenger terminal, planned for late March. The terminal will bear the name of the first Croatian president, Franjo Tuđman, and the terminal's size and spaciousness, new functionalities, and many commercial facilities will give passengers a better and more pleasant travel experience, emphasized the Zagreb Airport, adding that the airport is still testing processes and technology and training staff.

Establishment of the Imotski Region Tourist Board The Imotski Region is one of the excellent examples of accelerated development of tourism in rural areas, and once of the further motivators of that development will be the establishment of a shared Imotski Region Tourist Board, which will include the tourist board of Imotski and eight neighboring municipalities.

They will enter the market as a recognizable tourism product of the hinterland as of 2018, and the Croatian Ministry of Tourism will give them great support in that, announced the Minister of Tourism, Gari Cappelli. Tourists have around 150 top-notch vacation homes at their disposal in the area, 43 of which currently have pools.

In its summer flight schedule, Croatia's national airline, Croatia Airlines, will expand its European network of destinations with four new international lines - from Zagreb to Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo, and Bucharest. As of May 19, Croatia Airlines planes will fly directly between Zagreb and Stockholm, and two days later, the company will introduce the regular Zagreb-Helsinki and Zagreb-Oslo lines for the first time. The company also announced promotional prices for return tickets to Scandinavian destinations, as well as the Romanian capital, and promotional prices for all four destinations have also been announced for passengers from Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar, and Pula (via Zagreb).

New Croatia Airlines line

New Croatian brand of unique hotels presented A new Croatian brand of unique, luxury hotels, "Stories, Croatian Unique Hotels", was presented in Rovinj on March 1, 2017, during the International Luxury Hotel Association European Summit. The brand is a group of unique luxury hotels established at the Croatian Chamber of Economy last year, with the goal of positioning unique Croatian hotels on the international luxury tourism market as strongly as possible.

The brand ambassador is famous actress Eva LaRue from the TV show CSI: Miami.

"Croatia has singled out health tourism as one of the key products in the development of tourism by 2020, and as soon as the legal regulations are solved, it is ready to invest 400 million euro which have already been set aside", announced Minister of Tourism Gari Cappelli at the opening of the HTI (Health Tourism Industry) Conference, the leading international conference in the field of health tourism, held in Rovinj from February 28 to March 2, 2017, where international experts and respected lecturers from all over the world gathered. Through presentations, panel discussions, and workshops, the more than 300 participants discussed unsolved issues in the field of tourism that still hasn't fulfilled all its potential.

Tourism is one of the most competitive economic sectors in Croatia, but there is still a need to improve the offer and quality of services, employment, extension of the season, etc., said Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenković on March 6, 2017 at the presentation of this year's campaigns for the competitiveness of tourism and employment worth a total of 53.4 million kuna. There are two campaigns in question: "The competitiveness of the tourism business" and "Improving the access of vulnerable groups to the labor market in the tourism and hospitality sector", which were presented to the Government by the Prime Minister and the Croatian Minister of Tourism, Gari Cappelli.

Increase of foreign cruise ships in Croatian Adriatic During 2016, a total of 825 round trips by foreign boats were made in the Croatian Adriatic, which is 57 trips more than in 2015, while a total of 1.1 million passengers arrived on those ships (around 44 thousand passengers more), according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

Amongst the cruisers that arrived in Croatia last year that sailed under the flags of 13 countries, most of them were from the Bahamas and Malta. The largest number of cruisers registered their first entrance into Croatian territorial waters in the DubrovnikNeretva County (62.6%) and the Split-Dalmatia County (21.1%), while the others did so in the other five Adriatic counties.

HTI Conference held in Rovinj

Croatian awards at the HTI Conference At the seventh HTI (Health Tourism Industry) Conference, held from February 28 to March 2 in Rovinj, "Medical Tourism Index" awards for the best European health tourism destinations were awarded. Croatia and Greece won the award in the category of most perspective health tourism destination. The title of best destination was awarded to Great Britain, which was followed by Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

Annually, around two thousand tons of salt are produced at the Ston Saltworks, and each salt pan bears the name of a Christian saint, except for one - named Munda (for the people).

f you come to Pelješac by land, the first thing you will come across upon is Ston, a medieval town located next to the sea, precisely at the spot where the peninsula meets the mainland. Although it is small, Ston is the guardian of great treasures - both European and international. There you will see the impressive Ston Wall, the longest wall in Europe, and the second largest in the world (after the Great Wall of China). It is 5.5 km long, and its height ranges from five to ten meters.

It has two entrances and one exit, and includes the walls of Ston and Mali Ston (constructed according to a precise urban plan), the Great Wall, 41 towers, and six bastions. Impressive, isn't it?

Be a part of the history of that piece of world heritage and walk down the

walls, where you will be additionally rewarded with an enchanting view.

There you will see the salt pans at the Ston Saltworks, which are the oldest in Europe, and possibly in the world, where they have been producing salt and fleur de sel since ancient times in a natural, traditional way.

Besides being known as the city of salt and the walls, Ston is also famous for oysters, shellfish that true gourmets pine over. They will tell you that the oysters from Mali Ston Bay, where the ancient Romans also farmed them, are amongst the tastiest in the world. Although chefs prepare them in various, creative ways today, many say that oysters are most delicious when taken fresh from the sea, raw, and drizzled with a few drops of lemon

Try delicious shellfish prepared in the most diverse ways at the Festival of Oysters, on March 19, and then treat your­self to a slice of Ston cake.

juice. That is how you can taste them in restaurants in Ston and Mali Ston, and on the holiday of St. Joseph, on March 19, when, as the locals say, they are their best. That is also the time the Festival of Oysters is held, so besides tasting them raw, you can also taste them in other combinations, in soup, roasted, battered, fried...

Besides oysters, mussels, shellfish that are also a true delicacy and a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, are also farmed in Mali Ston Bay. Locals organize excursions to the farm with boats and rowboats, where they will reveal many interesting facts about the treasure of the sea, and you will find out, amongst other things, that oysters have aphrodisiac qualities.

A glass of superb Pelješac wine will pair well with oysters. Make sure to round off your culinary story with wine - after all, you are on a peninsula with world-famous wines! Near Ston, you will see cultivated vineyards in the settlement of Ponikve, and in the picturesque village of Putnikovići, you will find a farming association and winery that bear the same name.

There, high-quality and superb wines have been made for more than a century, and as of summer 2017, the place will also become home to the first Croatian museum of winegrowing and winemaking.

Head down to Ston's fields, covered in vineyards, which the ancient Romans divided with centuriation

(division of land plots), where many churches and chapels are scattered like pearls. You will see the oldest church, St. Michael's, with its valuable frescoes, which are the oldest in the area, on the hill that rises above the field. It is assumed that the church was once an estate chapel as a part of the Ducal Palace. Another special experience is walking or cycling down the old Napoleon Road, which stretches the entire length of the peninsula. Near Ston, the road will reveal valuable sacral heritage, the Gudnja Cave - a prehistoric site, mystical gravestones...

While in the Ston area, don't miss out on seeing its coves with incredible beaches - Prapratno, Brijesta, Žuljana and Marčuleti are just a few. Still, the most beautiful is considered to be Vučine beach in Žuljana Cove, lined with a pine forest, and favored by divers due to its many underwater caves.

Kobaš Cove, with its sandy beach and marina, is a sure destination for sailors.

The many folk associations will show you the fun and entertaining side of Ston, along with the many events held in Ston throughout the year - from the Festival of St. John (June 23 and 24 in Žuljana and Ponikve), and the Kinookus Film Food Festival (the last week in June) to the Festival of St. Liberan (July 23), the Festival of St. Ana in Putnikovići (July 26), the Summer Carnival in Ston (July 29), Wine Nights (August 5), Bila Noć (White Night August 12), the Assumption of Mary Festival in Ponikve (August 15), Klapa Nights (August 19), and the Ston Wall Marathon (September 24). 

Beautiful coves and beaches, and winegrowing slopes aren't the only trademarks of Pelješac. For centuries, olives have been grown on the peninsula, which the hardworking locals turn into outstanding extra-virgin olive oil, which is an integral part of nearly every dish, and is helping Pelješac find its place on the international olive growing map.

ead down the road from Ston to the very heart of the peninsula.

There, where it is at its narrowest, and located only two kilometers from both shores, you will find Janjina. Today, the former cultural and economic center of Pelješac, also called "Little Paris", is a sanctuary for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city living, those who seek peace and relaxation, where silence is only disturbed by the song of crickets or the call of the seagull, where smog is replaced with the aroma of pine trees and the sea, and the flavors of fast food with home-grown lamb, fish, and seafood, served with exquisite olive oil, and red Plavac Mali wine. Yes, there, in that winegrowing region, you will

find excellent vines of Plavac Mali, the sort used to make the most-respected Croatian wines. You can try it, and buy it, in family-run taverns in the area.

Near Janjina, there are several other destinations favored for summer, holiday tourism, and especially popular amongst families - Drače, Sreser, and Osobljava.

Those are places with beautiful beaches facing the "small sea" (between Pelješac and the mainland), and they are specific for the warm sea with refreshing currents. Still, each place has its own unique features.

Drače is pleasantly tucked away in a small cove, interesting for its archipelago with 13 islets and above-average warm sea, which is perfect for not only

swimming, but also for farming fish and shellfish. The town is also a safe harbor because it is protected by two piers, and it is an excellent place to head out from on excursions to the picturesque surroundings. Due to its incredibly good location and favorable winds, Drače is also a famous destination for surfers.

The Croatian surfing champion, Luka Mratović, took his first steps in becoming a surfer there, and still practices there today, often pointing out that Drače is the best place to surf in Croatia.

An islet with a legend The warm sea and attractive beaches are also the main features of Sreser, a fishing town located three kilometers from Janjina. The place is special for the islet of Gospin škoj, located across from the main town beach, which is connected to a legend. Apparently, there used to be a church on the islet where the locals would go to mass. However, one day, a girl drowned on her way there, so the locals had the new church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary built in town.

No one went to the island anymore.

However, curious tourists love to tour it every summer, and it can be reached by swimming or walking over (if you are a little taller). Although you won't see the ruins of the church, the islet is interesting, and can be toured in a short walk. There is a cross placed at the tallest rock on the top of the islet, and it offers a nice view. Those who like to walk enjoy the area surrounding Sreser, along with those who would like to feel peace and a way of life that hasn't changed there in centuries.

Near Janjina, you will also find Osobljava, formerly a pirate base and today a fishing village with a pretty cove. It is located at the bottom of a steep hill, so the sun sets earlier there, especially in the winter months.

Popova Luka, a sleepy town with old, stone, Captain's houses, is also worth a visit. It is those houses, scattered throughout Janjina and the nearby towns, which preserve the memory of the long maritime tradition of that area, and its part played in the former Republic of Dubrovnik. 

n unmissable holiday destination on Pelješac is Trpanj, one of the oldest settlements on the peninsula. Although it has a long tradition of tourism, mass tourism is still unknown there, and finding a hidden, romantic cove, which you will have all to yourself, is the reality. Trpanj is especially favored by families and young people who are primarily attracted by the beauty of the long, natural, pebble beaches splashed by the turquoise sea, where you can enjoy yourself in the sun, or in the shade of pine, palm, tamaris, or other Mediterranean plants. Make sure to also take it along when you're out on a walk, for a run, or cycling on one of the many trails that meander through Trpanj. Some of the most beautiful are the Waterfront Path that passes by Mediterranean plants and a pine forest as it follows the coast and coves, and the Olive Oil Path of Trpanj, which leads you alongside centuries-old olive trees and dry stone walls. The Miloševica Mountain Hill Path will take you to the peak, which offers a magnificent view of the Neretva River and Trpanj, while the Viter Hill Path will reveal vineyards and olive groves fighting for their existence

Take some time to visit Duba, a fishing and olive-growing town, which has been tirelessly preserving old churches and chapels and ruins of ancient walls from falling into oblivion. he beauty of untouched nature and coves are the features of all of Pelješac, including Orebić, the largest town on the island, located in the western part. St. Ilija, the highest peak on Pelješac, watches over it, and across the water it is "accompanied"

by Korčula, Marco Polo's city, which is just a 15-minute ferry ride away. In Orebić, you will especially feel that Pelješac is a peninsula of sailors and captains. As you walk through its stone streets, you will see rows of old captain's villas, surrounded by lush gardens full of aromatic herbs, lemon and orange trees, but also with exotic plants the sailors brought from their distant journeys.

They also always brought various gifts to Orebić, which can be seen at the Maritime museum, where maps and

other various items they used during their journeys are also displayed.

Fans of active vacations love to visit Orebić and explore its charms with long walks or bike rides. The paths will take you alongside the sea, olive groves, and sleepy towns. Those who seek more adrenaline are also in the right place. Mountain bikers will enjoy the unpaved paths, while St. Ilija is a challenge for every hiker. It takes about four hours to reach the top, depending on your level of physical fitness, and every step made towards the top will be awarded with one of the most beautiful views in the Mediterranean.

or diving. The underwater world awaits you with many endemic species of Adriatic flora and fauna, sunken Roman galleons, and warships. Head out on that adventure as part of a professional course, diving school, or on your own, if you are an experienced diver.

Still, the trademarked water sport in Orebić is windsurfing. Kučište and Viganj are the most popular locations for catching the western mistral wind and riding the waves, and they are located in the narrowest part of the Pelješac Channel. Wind blows there all day long, which attracts many windsurfers who have named it the most attractive destination for windsurfing and kite windsurfing in Croatia and Europe. Every year, Viganj hosts the Croatian open windsurfing championship, and so this year, the 2017 Viganj Slalom Open will be held from June 20 to 26. The central European windsurfing championship (Slalom & Formula) will be held slightly later, from July 18 to 23.

Take the time to visit Lovište, a fishing village at the very end of the peninsula. Many tourists and sailors, who like to drop anchor there since the cove is protected, find peace from the hustle and bustle of daily life in its cove.

If you are wondering where to go for Labor Day, May 1, here's the answer - "Let's go to the wine empire on Pelješac." This time, the place is Potomje, home to the most famous Croatian wine - Dingač. Tour the wine cellars, try the fantastic wine and homemade specialties, and have a great time. World travelers say that the culture of a country and its people is best seen - at the table. 

Kučište and Viganj are the most famous windsurfing locations, where you will best catch the western mistral and ride the waves.

Windsurfing is the most popular water sport in the Orebić area; The Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of Angels; Irresistible panoramas; The area surrounding Orebić is also a winegrowing region.

According to legend, Orebić's captains and sailors always greeted Our Lady of Angels upon departing on and arriving from journeys with boat sirens in a sign of gratitude and request for protection, and the Franciscans would respond by ringing the bells of the church tower.

ot a single photo, video, or article can depict the ambiance and grandeur of the processions that pass through the medieval streets of the city of Korčula during the Holy Week, before the Easter holiday. The long tradition of processions, which has been

cultivated and preserved from falling into oblivion by the All Saints, St. Rocco, and St. Mihovil brotherhoods, must truly be seen in person. It is a week where the brotherhoods place all the most valuable things from their luxurious halls - liturgical and art artifacts, crosses,

torci (large candles), and torcini (small candles), which, as they pass by slowly in the procession, illuminate the old stone streets of Marco Polo's city, giving it a special charm and dose of mystique.

Even if you aren't able to spend the entire week (April 9 - 17, 2017) in Korčula, at least try to make it there for Good Friday (April 14), when the largest and most formal procession will pass through the city. Brothers of all generations pass through the city dressed in tunics, and during the procession, they sing old songs while carrying torci. They are accompanied by many followers and tourists, who the brothers will gladly share the many interesting facts of the long tradition with after the procession, and reveal that the brotherhoods even compete amongst themselves regarding the size of the torci.

In the sign of sword dances Late April and early May will pass deliciously and actively in Korčula. The

Spring Food & Wine Festival (April 28 - May 4) will take you on an exciting food and wine journey at several restaurants in Korčula. Those with a more adventurous spirit will be sure to be at the Marco Polo Challenge triathlon (April 29), which includes a swimming competition (1500 m), cycling (40 km), and running (10 km), and it is perfect for recreational athletes and all those interested.

Besides testing your physical abilities, during the race, you can also enjoy the gorgeous landscapes of Korčula, the fresh sea air, and the Mediterranean aromas. You will also meet participants from all over Croatia and the world, and great fun and socialization are an integral part of the sports event.

Make sure to try delicious dishes made with wild asparagus on that day, also dedicated to Korčula asparagus.

Whatever time of year you find yourself in Korčula from June to October, you will be able to see the Moreška, an old sword dance that has, according to

The knight's dance is actually a depiction of a reenacted battle between the white and dark king, the Turk and Moor, for the love of a girl. The tradition of performing sword dances is also nurtured by the other towns on the island of Korčula, and you can see them all at once if you are in Korčula on June 16, when the Festival of Sword Dances will be held.

Along with sword dances from Korčula moreška, kumpanija, and moštra, other knights' associations from Croatia, and all over the world, will also perform at the festival. The festival starts with a procession of the knights' associations through the picturesque streets of the old town, and continues with a sword dance performance. The sounds of swords and the music that accompanies the nerve-wracking sword dances will intrigue those who have always loved stories of brave knights, along with those who had little interest in them before.

The Moreška sword dance has been performed since Every the 16th century; year, on June 30, the people of Korčula celebrate the half-New Year in costume.

A unique New Year's party Late June is reserved for the IV. KnežeKorčula Regatta, along with another unique event. Very few people think of New Year's parties, which are either far back in the past, or far away in the future, at the end of June. However, as June 30 draws closer, it becomes the main topic in Korčula. At that time, the people of Korčula celebrate the half-New Year, like few people in the world do, and the party is even more fun and crazier than the normal New Year's celebration, since it is a costume party. A large parade of original, costumed characters passes through the city at that time, and it goes along with enjoying delicacies from Korčula, spectacular fireworks, swimming in the sea, dancing and singing until late in the night, and costumed groups from other parts of Croatia and the world also traditionally join in on the fun.

The party officially starts on Saturday, June 30, at 6:00 PM, and it ends... well... come and see for yourself when! 

The four marked hiking trails, 1 to 10 km in length, and the four cycling circuit trails, with a total length of 60 km, will satisfy the appetites of fans of hiking, trekking, as well as avid cyclists. If you head 7 km towards the interior of the island, you will reach Blato, where you can also enjoy the unique experience of cycling down one of the many cycling trails or walking down

the hiking trails or the paths along the sea. Another unforgettable experience in Blato is tasting lumblija, a cake that has delighted all visitors to Blato with its taste and story for more than 200 years, and is an integral part of the spread in Blato for important holidays.

A legend of passionate love is tied to it, and the Days of Lumblija are held in its honor just before All Saints Day. All year long, in taverns, restaurants, and at country estates, the locals will spoil you with home-cooked dishes with flavors complemented by superb olive oil and wine from local winemakers, who will also gladly open their wine cellars up for you. Take the time to relax on the Blato Riviera and its enchanting beaches, such as Prigradica and Prižba, but also for cultural delights. The Barilo Ethno House will take you back through Blato's past and show you what life was like on the island in the past, while the Kumpanija Knight's Association will offer you a depiction of history brought alive - the Kumpanija, a sword dance that will, just like the lumblija, remain a memory for a long time.

The people of Smokvica, a town in the heart of the island, are also proud keepers of tradition and old customs.

Besides dancing the kumpanija, you will also find them dancing old-fashioned dances, singing centuries-old songs, and they are also known for their a cappella and choir singing, as well as brass band music. They will also gladly tell you the many legends tied to their

The festival combines a trail and trekking race, Vela strka, which runs through the picturesque surroundings and many attractions, such as Vela Spila. Cyclists will be sure to be at the MTB marathon that passes alongside vineyards, old olive groves, and views of the surrounding islands.

Fans of recreational climbing will come into their own as well since a climbing competition on a climbing wall is also held at the festival.

Not only do they grow Grk, but locals also grow Plavac Mali (a red grape) in the vineyards in Lumbarda, and make Prošek, a sweet wine that pairs excellently with desserts.

place - one of the unhappy love story between Antonio and Nera the mermaid, whose traces of hair are still imprinted in the boulders of a beautiful cove, followed by the one of the battle on Gradina, and the most popular one - of Vilin dol, a small field with puddles, where fairies gather at night and dance.

Although you probably won't see mermaids or fairies, head over to the locations where they reportedly gather, which can also be reached with walking and cycling trails. The more than 50 km of trails will lead you past old castles and rustic villas, centuries-old vineyards and olive groves, picturesque coves, caves, and viewpoints, and enchanting nature.

The Pošip Trail is especially attractive and it leads to the place where the first vine of the sort indigenous to Korčula, used to make the first protected Croatian white wine, was found. Near Smokvica, there are many coves, including Brna, one of the larger ones. Try diving, kayaking, or tighten the sails and explore the interesting archipelago by sailboat.

and restaurants, and try the delicious homemade food still made there today according to centuries-old recipes.

A glass of Pošip will round off the experience in the "homeland of Pošip".

In the land of sand and Grk Pošip is to Smokvica what Grk is to Lumbarda, a place on the southeastern part of the island of Korčula known for its sandy soil, which that white sort of wine prefers. In the "Kingdom of Grk", pair the wine with seafood specialties offered by local taverns and restaurants, and then all you can do is relax on one of the long, sandy beaches. The most famous ones are Pržina and Bilin žal, favorites amongst young people, families, and all those who love the feeling of warm sand between their toes, and swimming in a clear, warm sea.

However, don't relax too much because Lumbarda will also challenge you to have an active holiday. Head down one of the walking trails, or explore the interesting surroundings on bike. The bicycle trails pass alongside old towers and summer homes, churches, dry stone walls, vineyards, and olive groves, and they will also reveal priceless views of the neighboring islands of Mljet and Lastovo. If you would like to explore the archipelago in more detail, rent a boat, a water ski, or a kayak on one of the beaches and head out to one of the more obscure coves, accessible only from the sea, where you will have the special advantage of a cove for yourself. 

he legend of the love between Mare, a girl from the island of Lopud, and Ivan, the son of a powerful land owner from Dubrovnik, who met secretly on the island of St. Andrew until one evening, when the girl drowned while swimming from Lopud to St. Andrew to see her beloved, isn't known to many people. Interestingly, the legend was confirmed by a document from 1483, which is kept in Dubrovnik's archives. Still, many more are aware of the fact that a Benedictine convent used be located on the island, which can be found six nautical miles from Dubrovnik, followed by a quarantine site for the residents of Lopud. The island is around 400 meters long, covered in pine forests and lush Mediterranean vegetation on its western side. Due to the flocks of migrating birds that remain there, it was named an ornithological reserve.

The island is also home to a lighthouse that dates back to 1873, with a light beam visible from 12 nautical miles

away. The lighthouse building includes a four-sided tower with a light rotating 69 meters above sea level, and there is an aggregate room and warehouse next to the building.

Along with the lighthouse keeper, who lives on the main floor of the building, there is a suite furnished on the first floor, which can be rented, and an entirely different vacation can be experienced. The building has electricity, thanks to solar power equipment, and water is desalinized.

A stamp with the motif of the island of St. Andrew was issued on June 10, 2015, 48.28 mm x 29.82 mm in size, along with the stamps with motifs of the island of Daksa, Grebeni reef, and island of Glavat. It was issued in a ten-stamp sheetlet, and the Croatian Post also issued a First Day Cover (FDC). At total of 100 thousand copies were issued. The author of the stamp is Orsat Franković, a designer from Zagreb, and the photographer is Damir Fabijanić. 

Linđo is more than just the most popular dance in the Dubrovnik area. Linđo is a way of life, full of energy and a rhythm that motivates you to dance, relax, and feel alive...

The lijerica is used not only in the Dubrovnik area, but also in Konavle, on the Pelješac peninsula, along with the islands of Mljet and Lastovo. It resembles a small cello, and it is played by skilled musicians who hit the beat of their song strongly with their right foot, giving the dancers rhythm.

f you find yourself in Dubrovnik or at the Dubrovnik Riviera at any time of the year, especially when various events and festivals are held,

you will very likely see a performance of Linđo, the most popular dance in the area, which is an integral part of every larger event. Although its

original name is Dubrovačka poskočica, it is better known as Linđo, and it is assumed that it got its name from the surname, or nickname, of a formerly famous lijerica player, Nikola Lala Linđo, from Župa Dubrovačka. According to another assumption, it was named after the local name for lijerica players.

However, it absolutely doesn’t matter which assumption you believe more.

What is important is to experience Linđo, which, according to locals, is much more than just a dance.

A dance full of improvisation Linđo is also a way of life, and since the late 18th century, it has been deeply rooted in the history of the Dubrovnik region. Young men used Linđo to woo young women, and that tradition can still be seen today if you carefully watch the dance being performed, that is, the moves and gestures made by the male dancers and the reactions of the female dancers. It is performed with the accompaniment of the lijerica, an ancient

In October 2013, more than 270 dancers danced Linđo on Stradun, the main street in Dubrovnik, and the intangible cultural heritage of the city of Dubrovnik was inscribed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest Linđo performance.

instrument from southern Dalmatia (with roots in Greece), and in the past, it was also performed accompanied by a bagpipe. Interestingly, there are no written notes for the lijerica, but instead, the music is handed down from generation to generation. Linđo is danced in a circle, in pairs surrounding the musician, and the funny lyrics, often with double meaning, are called out by the dance master, who designates the pairs and changes in the dance figures.

Some parts of the dance are repeated throughout the performance, and the entire dance is full of improvisation, so it is often said that no two performances are alike. In fact, have a look at a few, and see for yourself.

There are several folk dance ensembles that perform Linđo in the Dubrovnik area. However, one of the most famous and oldest is the Linđo Folklore Ensemble from Dubrovnik, which celebrated a great anniversary last year - 50 years of successful performances.

Even though they are Linđo specialists

and it is unimaginable to hold the Dubrovnik Summer Games without them, the ensemble also performs dances from other parts of Croatia, and successfully presents the rich cultural tradition of Croatia throughout Croatia, Europe, and the world.

Take advantage of a unique opportunity and watch a Linđo performance while in Dubrovnik and the surrounding area.

You will have the chance to do so every Sunday (from Palm Sunday to early November) at 11:15 in Čilipi, a town located 20 kilometers from Dubrovnik, where dancers from the Čilipi Folk Dance Ensemble perform Linđo, and other dances from the area.

You will see for yourself that the rhythm of the Linđo is addictive, and you will likely catch yourself tapping the beat with your hands or feet during the performance. If you catch a performance of Linđo on one of the city squares, don't hesitate, and dance! Feel its force and energy, be a part of the living history of that incredible region! 

On April 27 and 28, Budva, Montenegro will be the host of the third Adriatic Sea Forum, organized by the Risposte Turismo, a research and consulting company in the tourism macro-industry. The focus of the forum, where more than 200 participants are expected to attend, is cruising, and the ferry and nautical sector in the Adriatic Sea. At the forum, there will be, amongst other things, discussions on the main issues, challenges, and potential of maritime tourism, on the promotion of the Adriatic as a unique tourist destination, on ferry transportation, cruise itineraries in the Adriatic region and managing destinations where ships dock on return trips. There will also be discussions on the European Interreg MED and Adrion programs, and cross-border cooperation programs between Italy and Croatia, and Italy, Albania, and Montenegro.

At the forum, participants will receive the new issue of the Adriatic Sea Tourism Report magazine, which includes the research conducted

hirty kilometers north of the worldrenowned pearl, Dubrovnik, there is yet another gem of the Croatian south - the Dubrovnik Coast. In the past, it was the sanctuary of Dubrovnik's elite society, which built summer estates there, and today it is a holiday destination for many tourists. As they will tell you themselves, they are attracted by the great diversity of that little area, which is splashed by the clean sea and lined with sandy coves and beaches on one side, while, on the other, it is enriched with the aromas of wine, olive oil, honey, figs, carob, sage, heather, and rosemary.

It has always been an area abundant in stone, and over the centuries, the hardworking inhabitants left behind incredible cultural and historical value many churches, summer estates, stećci (stone tombstones), etc., which present a true challenge for every visitor. Make sure to visit the pre-Romanesque church "Rotonda", which dates back to the 9th century, in the village of Ošlje, famous for the legend of buried gold bells in its vicinity. The monastery and church of St. Jerome in Slano, the church of St. Martin in the village of Čepikuće, St. Blaise (protector saint of the town

of Slano) in Slano, St. Rocco in Grgurići, and Holy Annunciation in Banja are also interesting. The Prince's Palace and Ohmučević Summer home in Slano, the stone border near the village of Imotica, and the mystical stećci scattered throughout the area are just some of the witnesses of an interesting past. An excellent way to tour the stećci is by taking a ride down the "Stećci of the Dubrovnik Riviera" bike trail, 50 km in length, which passes by not only stećci, but also other attractions, such as the "Rotonda" church. Make sure to visit the House of Honey in the village of Majkovi, famous for beekeeping and honey products, along with other traditional products. There you can find out many interesting facts on the lifecycle of bees, and treat yourself to the top products - honey with sage and heather. You will also see Majkovske lokve in the village, a habitat for a strictly protected species of freshwater turtle.

Here, we single out a few of the many exciting events, which will satisfy the desires of all generations, awaiting you in Zagreb in 2017.

Start off spring in Zagreb on a delicious note. During Restaurant Week (March 10-19 and October 6-15), some of the best chefs in Zagreb's famous restaurants will prepare three-course Croatian and international meals for the fantastic price of 100 kuna. After your gourmet journey, get ready to take a trip to the past. From late April to October, the Zagreb Time Machine will take you back to times long past on the streets of Zagreb, where characters from Zagreb's past will walk the streets in historical costumes, and you can also see the guard of honor, street performers, promenade concerts... The Secrets of Grič, an interactive theatrical spectacle, will reveal legends of witches in the mysterious atmosphere of Zagreb's

Upper Town in the evening hours from May to September.

From May 8 to 14, when nature is in full bloom, the area surrounding Bundek Lake in Zagreb will be especially aromatic.

The Floraart horticultural fair will be held at that time, and walking alongside the fragrant, multicolored flower displays is an unforgettable experience.

The fun Cest is d'Best street festival is a story of its own. Performances by clowns, magicians, musicians and other informal artists will entertain you at almost every street corner from May 31 to June 4.

Summer on Stross will bring life to the centennial chestnut lane on Strossmayer promenade. Over the course of a hundred days, from late May to mid-September, see performances by musicians, painters, watch outdoor movie screenings, and performances by travelling theaters.

Splavnica W

ith the arrival of spring, it is a special joy to walk through one of Zagreb's shortest streets, Splavnica. It is located in the very heart of Zagreb, and connects the main city square, Ban Josip Jelačić Square, with the Dolac market. The quaint street has been known as Splavnica forever, but very few people know how it got its name. A long time ago, the Medvešćak stream used to run through nearby Tkalčićeva Street and the surrounding area, and in some parts there were watermills with gates (splavnica) that the locals would use as bathing spots in the summer, and so the street got its name. If the street were to be named today, it would probably be a floral name since Zagreb's florists bring fresh flowers there every day to sell to the people of Zagreb and their guests in the form of attractive bouquets, wreaths, and arrangements. It could be said that Splavnica is also one of the most aromatic streets in Zagreb, especially in the spring, and it is often called Zagreb's largest outdoor flower shop. So, next time you're passing through the center of Zagreb, take a walk through Splavnica, stop at one of the red Šestine umbrellas, inhale the aroma of a Zagreb "pušlek" bouquet, and gift one to yourself or someone you love. 

There is a long tradition of horse breeding in the BjelovarBilogora region; Riding schools; Excursionists at the Roma ethno house; Pisanica eco-ethno trail.

There are around 15 active equestrian associations in the Bjelovar-Bilogora region, and 10 farm tourism estates in the horse breeding business, with a total of 198 km marked equestrian trails meandering through the area. The area is the traditional host of national and international competitions in endurancedistance horse riding.

esides attracting excursionists, hikers, cyclists, and other fans of active vacations all year long to its paradise, the Bjelovar-Bilogora region, located in northwest Croatia, also hides a tourism offer unique in Croatia - an attractive equestrian tourist trail where you will experience a completely different kind of vacation. It has always been important for people in that area to be connected to horses, the noble animals that helped them in daily tasks and transportation, and they were always held in high regard. So, it's no coincidence that the 90 km long Bilogora Equestrian Tourist Route, the first route of its kind to bear the international ISO certificate in Croatia, runs through the area with a long tradition in breeding and raising horses. Guides experienced in tourist horseback riding (currently there are eight certified guides) will take you on the adventure of exploring the tame area on horseback, and even if you have never tried that incredible sport, you're in the right place to try it for the first time. Several equestrian clubs organize riding lessons, and at some estates, they will also take you

on carriage rides, and reveal many interesting facts about horses and coexisting with them.

Flavors of home in the idyllic hills The route will take you alongside the idyllic hills and valley, winegrowing slopes that locals have been cultivating for centuries, irresistible viewpoints and landscapes where time stopped long ago. For a full experience, stop at one of the 20 'horses welcome' stops - preserved examples of the cultural and historic heritage of the area, ethno houses, farm estates, wineries, and restaurants where the hosts will pamper you with flavors of their region. Some of the sites are the Na malenom brijegu estate, the Vinia estate and winery, the OPG Mihoci - Vrata Bilogore, Kamenitovac mountain cabin, the ethno estate in Veliko Trojstvo, SRC Kukavica and the Roma ethno house.

is also special for the four rivers that meander through it - the Korana, Kupa, Mrežnica, and Dobra, well-known amongst adventurers, fans of rafting and canoeing, who often describe them as "four rivers - four adventures". In the summer, the Korana and Kupa attract swimmers and rowers, while fishermen visit the rivers all year long.

The three representatives of the green paradise are Karlovac, Ozalj, and Ribnik. While in Karlovac, the center of that part of Croatia, you will enjoy walking through its romantic parks and promenades, in the shade of hundredyear old chestnut lanes. A great attraction in the city is Aquatika, the first freshwater aquarium in Croatia, which has continued to thrill a steady stream of visitors since it first opened its doors in October 2016. Dive into that world of more than a hundred freshwater fish species, 40 of which are endemic, feel the strength and the abundance of the rivers, and discover many interesting

facts on the biological diversity and natural wealth of Croatia.

A must-see attraction in Karlovac is the Old Town of Dubovac, located at a site that offers a panoramic view of the entire city. Tour the interior of the picturesque 13th century castle, including the highest tower (Branič-tower), where there is a permanent exhibition, and then relax in the surrounding area at a popular excursion site that often hosts many events. The "Kastel" bistro will be opened there in April 2017, and there you will be able to enjoy the offer of many diverse dishes from that area, while surrounded by a medieval ambiance.

Did you know that the largest strudel in the world was made in Jaškovo, a settlement within the city of Ozalj, in 2015? It rightfully entered the Guinness Book of World Records with a length of 1479.38 meters. A total of 520 kg of apples and 260 kg of raisins, products from the Ozalj region, were used to make the strudel, which was prepared according to an old recipe.

celebrated in the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Karlovac, a traditional Path of the Cross from Ozalj to Svetice follows (April 9), in a beautiful spring ambiance, and every year, many believers from Croatia and abroad participate. There will also be a lace exhibition in Ozalj (April 22 - June 6), and this year, emphasis will be placed on the jalba (a cap made using one of the oldest textilemaking techniques also used in Ancient Egypt). The exhibition also includes several interesting workshops, which will be held by experts from Norway and the Czech Republic. An excellent opportunity to walk down Karlovac's main path, Promenada, will be during the Spring Promenade (April 29 - May 20).

The event combines recreational, social, and traditional games for all generations, and there will also be a chance to taste a traditional Karlovac breakfast, have your picture taken with important people from Karlovac's past, ride through the city in an old carriage, participate in contests... Karlovac will also host the famous international taekwondo competition, the 2017 Croatia Karlovac Open, on May 27... 

Those who love active vacations will enjoy themselves in the Ribnik area which is also rich in cycling, hiking, and Nordic walking trails. The Old Town of Ribnik, also known as "Wasserburg", adds a special touch to the landscape.

Adrenaline buffs can also head out on an off-road ride with all-terrain vehicles in the Karlovac area through ancient old forests, keepers of many secrets and witnesses to the past, which will be revealed during the ride.

gulin is located in a spacious valley, and towered over by Klek Mountain - the birthplace of Croatian hiking and alpinism, with an abundance of hiking trails. There are more than 200 km of bike trails, and the beautiful "Ogulin Sea" - Sabljaci Lake, a magnet for fishermen, swimmers, and rowers. Experience all that barbequed food and good music has to offer during the Grill&Rock festival in Crikvenica (May 27). In early June, you will have the chance to enjoy the view of a regatta of old wooden boats at the "Wooden Boat Regatta" (June 3), while you also enjoy local delicacies. Those who love cherries will enjoy the Cherry Festival (June 10-11), when the air in Crikvenica will be full of the aroma of cherries. During Oily Fish Week (June 17-24), the Oily Fish Route will take you to restaurants in Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo, and Selce, where chefs will prepare delicious, creative dishes based on blue fish. islands: Fritzi Palace in Mali Lošinj, Veli Lošinj Tower and the Osor Archeological Collection (on the island of Cres).

Don't be fooled by the façade of the 19th century Kvarner Palace, located in the center of Mali Lošinj. Its interior hides a quirky and very modern museum set up for the Apoxyomenos Museum. The museum, opened in 2016, tells the story of the Apoxyomenos, an impressive ancient statue of a young man discovered twenty years ago, covered by algae in the waters surrounding Lošinj, by a Belgian diver. The restoration took a long time, after which an excellently preserved 1.92 m tall bronze statue of a young Greek athlete appeared. Today, the Apoxyomenos is a trademark of Lošinj, and a great source of inspiration.

lthough it isn't avoided in the summer months, when it is full of tourists, those in the know and fans of active vacations will head to the island of Rab in the spring and fall. They know that is the best time to enjoy long walks along the coast, explore educational trails, which the

chair, you will conquer them with ease.

The two Premužić trails (which were named after the passionate Croatian hiker Ante Premužić) are a great choice.

The first one is 8 km long, and leads from the camp in Lopar to the settlement of Matkići. Definitely take your sunglasses with you because part of the trail is sunny, while another part passes through the forest, and make sure to have some water and a sandwich in your backpack since there is no water spring, nor restaurant, alongside the trail. The second Premužić trail, 15 km long, passes through the Dundo Park Forest, along the coast and coves, including Gožinka Bay, where you can grab a bite to eat. Both Premužić trails are ideal for walkers and hikers, although not for cyclists. However, those exploring the island on two wheels will enjoy the

100 km of island cycling trails, and the most beautiful one amongst them is the 14 km long Rab-Maman trail that passes by the Rab city walls, along the coast and coves to the islet of Maman. If you would like to tour the islet, you can do so on foot or by boat. The trails that pass through oak forests down to the emerald blue sea, where you should be sure to take a swim, especially in the warmer months, are particularly beautiful.

The Adriatic's sandy paradise You will often come across fans of water sports in the coves on Rab. You will see them waterskiing, trying the incredibly popular kayaking, diving, fishing, parasailing (a parachute pulled by a motorboat), or playing water polo... But, why not try out one of those

climbing, jumping, walking, and finding your way through nature), and it passes over Kamenjak, the highest peak of the island, where you will want to stay a little while longer. Yes, it will be difficult to resist the view it offers to the east all the way to mighty Velebit, and to the west to the Kvarner Bay. There is a little restaurant where you can rest at the very top, but most importantly, you can stop time surrounded by beauty and breathe in deeply. Feel the positive energy of the island, which they also call the island of happiness. With reason.

If you feel out of shape, don't worry.

There are more than 200 km of promenades, walking and cycling trails, along with some less challenging hiking trails. The slopes are gentle and accomplishable, and even if you came to the island directly from your office

Rab is the perfect place to release endorphins (hormones of happiness)!

Some of the events are a great chance to motivate you to do so. The second stage of the 4 Island MTB Stage Race will take place on Rab on April 20, when participants will zoom through the streets of the old city of Rab, forests, sandy deserts, and the island's rocky area. The unique race lasts four days (April 19-22), and it takes place on four islands in Kvarner - Krk, Rab, Cres, and Lošinj. Also attractive is the Rab Triathlon (June 4), which traditionally gathers more than 200 participants who measure their strength in cycling, swimming, and running. Fans of adventure races will be sure to visit the Rab Island Trail (September 23).

Just when you thought you had discovered and tried it all, Rab will

continue to intrigue you. Did you know it is the island with the largest number of sandy beaches in the Adriatic? Head over to the sandy paradise, Lopar, where its Paradise Beach is just one of the 22 beautiful sites that await you on the northern part of the island. But don't get too lazy resting too long on the soft, warm sand, when there is still plenty left to explore. Besides numerous sandy coves, over the centuries, wind and erosion have formed magnificent canyons and unusual geological shapes, while also leaving fossil artifacts behind.

You can see the most beautiful pieces in the Lopar Geomorphologic Garden, at the Rab Island Geopark, where there are pretty, meandering walking paths, marked with geo-points. Explore them.

You will come across unexpected sights and have the feeling that you are on another planet. Imaginative sand creations can also be seen if you visit Lopar during the "Sand Sculpture" Festival (June 13-17), when Lopar's beaches become the stage for creative sand sculptures. Make sure to bring your camera with you! 

he Krka National Park Public Institution delighted true fans of nature with the possibility of signing up for the Friends of the Krka Club. Membership is available to all visitors from Croatia and abroad for the price of 200 kuna for adults, and 90 kuna for children aged seven to eighteen who visit the park accompanied by their parents, and membership lasts a year from the day of enrolment. All "friends" can enter the park freely in that period, except to visit Skradinski buk in July and August, when the pass can only be used once.

The Friends of the Krka Club allows you to enjoy nature in abundance, and the Park can best be seen by walking on its educational hiking trails. The trails have educational panels with information on the plant and animal life in the Park, as well as on the cultural and historical

sites in the area. Regardless whether you prefer a more active vacation, or a light family stroll, while on the paths you can enjoy the enchanting landscapes shaped by the karst beauties - the Krka and Čikola rivers.

In the Park there are twelve trails in total, of a range of lengths, constructed at various sites. The bicycle trail leads to Skradinski buk, the most famous and most visited waterfall on the Krka River, which can also be reached via the forest trail from the Lozovac entrance.

The waterfall consists of limestone barriers, islands and lakes, and can be seen thanks to a circular network of trails and bridges. There are another two circular trails at Roški slap and the Krka Monastery. The shortest trail is 300 m long and leads to Bilušića buk, while the longest is Stinice - Roški slap Oziđana pećina, 8.5 km in length.

On the most beautiful Croatian trails The Stinice - Roški slap - Oziđana pećina trail, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Croatia, will show you the abundance of flora and fauna of water and land habitats. Oziđana pećina, where it was confirmed that humans once lived, is part of the trail, and it houses an in situ archeological collection. A total of 517 wooden steps lead from the cave to the bottom of the canyon and Roški slap, which consists of a series of small

cascades, called the necklace by the locals. The trail goes by the cascades on to the emerald green Među gredama straits, to the Šuplja stina cave, the ruins of the medieval Kamičak fortress, and the island of Visovac, a pearl of natural and cultural Croatian heritage.

The beauty of stone and the Ključica fortress can be admired from the trail that leads to the Čikola riverbed, or from the other side of the canyon, from the Ključica trail, which ends at a viewpoint that offers an enchanting view of the medieval fortress. The viewpoint on

Manojlovac, the highest waterfall on the Krka River, can also be reached on foot, and two new trails have also been made midstream: Rupe - Rogovo and Niz ploču.

n a wide bay, just 13 km north of the renaissance city of Šibenik, there is a perfect town for vacations Vodice. It is big enough to find plenty of entertainment and various things to do, but also small enough to feel the true ambiance of Dalmatian life.

If you would like to fill your holiday with activities, the picturesque surroundings of Vodice offer a hundred kilometers of on-road and off-road cycling trails of various difficulties. The locals are proudest of the extremely demanding, attractive "Orlov krug" trail, where the C2 race for the World Cup MTB XCO is held. All the trails are well marked, and before you head out to the trail stop by the tourist office for a bike map. Recreational cyclists find the "Spring Bike Ride", which will be held on March 18, especially attractive, along with the Mountain Bike Weekend, which will be held on the "Orlov krug" trail on April 29 and 30, and includes the "Babes on Bikes" recreational race for women, the bicycle Alka, a concert, and plenty of good fun.

You can also explore the area on foot, strolling alongside the aromatic Mediterranean plants, quaint historical churches, ancient houses (bunje), wells, dry stone walls, fortresses... Fans of nature and hiking will use the opportunity for trekking, which is growing in popularity, while fans of running will circle October 7 in their calendars, when the Vodice Trekking race will be held, or they will enter one of the five annual races of the Island Trail League. A lot of other sports facilities can also be found in Vodice, such as tennis courts, a volleyball court, and a mini-golf green, while you can also best enjoy the view of the island of Prvić from a kayak.

Those who love the underwater world are in for a true treat - in Vodice they will find an interesting and rich seabed complete with sunken ships.

They can be explored with guided diving tours organized by Vodice's diving schools and internationally certified diving center.

Vodice is also the ideal destination for fans of cultural tourism. There, you can visit the nearby LiburnianRoman settlement on the top of the Velika Mrdakovica hill, which can be reached by a hiking/cycling trail that connects it to the ancient settlement with a necropolis and roman cistern at the foot of the hill. Head down the "Water - the ultimate shaper of history" route, which includes 20 culturalhistorical attractions at six sites in the Šibenik-Knin area. As part of the route, or beyond it, make sure to visit the picturesque island of Prvić, home to the Faust Vrančić Memorial Center.

Have a look at the scaled models of the inventions designed by the renaissance-period scientific genius, philosopher and bishop, especially his incredible parachute or Homo Volans (flying man), many models of his bridges, a mill with an adjustable roof, and a model of an oil press...

The city of Split, which is irrevocably tied to the name of Roman Emperor Diocletian, is the guardian of many attractions and great cultural and historical value.

Although you will need several days to see it all, make sure Vestibule is on your "must-visit" list.

The ancient imperial foyer has a circular interior and square exterior. It used to be the entrance to the residential part of the palace, and today it is a favorite photography subject for many tourists.

Next to Vestibule is the unique Cathedral of St. Domnius, initially built as Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum.

Following the footsteps of gladiators While travelling through Dalmatia, make sure to stop in Solin.

That town, not far from Split, has a lot of stories to tell...

Make sure to have a look at the archeological collection there, and in the summer stop by the restoration workshop.

Round off a pleasant family outing with a walk through the romantic city center, along the Jadro River, or the "Croatian Jordan", and visiting St. Mary Island, which is home to the oldest Marian shrine in Croatia. Stop by Gašpina mlinica, which dates back to 1711 and find out how to mill grain there, or head over to the Church of St. Peter and Moses, the "Hollow Church" where Croatian King Zvonimir was crowned.

Take a walk to Vranjica, a fishing village on the peninsula that they call "Little Venice" for a reason. A special attraction there is the large aquarium, with 130 species of fish and unique specimens of flora and fauna from the Adriatic Sea. Stay in Solin a few days longer to experience some of its many unique events that delight all generations. 

pon arriving in ancient Salona (present-day Solin) it will be clear that you are in an outdoor museum that leaves the impression that ancient Romans and gladiators just passed through it. Walking through Solin is actually a walk through history, at archeological sites that will reveal many interesting features to you: Manastirine - the oldest ancient Christian graveyard, Tusculum - an archeological museum with interesting replicas of ancient artifacts, and a cathedral complex with two basilicas, a baptistery, and a spa.

Your attention will also be drawn to the 2nd century amphitheater, where every summer, as a part of Romance in Salona, gladiator fights are held, and Emperor Diocletian and Empress Priska, Roman guards, and ancient Romans in togas with torches in hand walk through the city to the sound of drums... Take a break from walking at the Parać house, built of stone from the Salona amphitheater.

Stairs lead from the old city center to the Mirabela tower, and it takes between five and ten minutes to climb up to the top, depending on your level of physical fitness.

O

miš is everything but a typical Dalmatian town. There, twenty kilometers south east from the city of Split, nature had its fun. On its way to the sea, the emerald Cetina River decided to cut a mountain range into half, leaving behind a majestic canyon which is equally enjoyed today by adventurists, nature buffs, photographers, painters... The steep cliffs, old fortresses, and the view of the medieval city that was reigned over

by Omiš's pirates for more than two centuries give an air of mystery. To get that panorama in the palm of your hand, climb up to the top of the Mirabela tower in the city, which is a reminder of the pirate past for the people of Omiš. In the 13th century, old pirates used that tower to watch over the Brač Channel and look for Venetian and other merchant ships.

Fortica, a 500-year old fortress you can reach after an hour-long leisurely walk, also offers a spectacular view of the city, but also of this part of Dalmatia.

A unique view of the islands of Brač, Hvar, and Šolta, the Cetina River canyon,

and the Omiš hinterland can be seen from the fortress. It is a view you will surely want to eternalize with your camera and later share with your friends on social networks.

Poljica, a group of villages with a rich past, lined along the foot of Mosor Mountain in the Omiš hinterland, can also be seen from Fortica. But don't just see it from above. Head down to the picturesque landscape where historical battles were once fought, and where the Republic of Poljica, the first of its kind in Europe, once stood. It was governed by the people who would choose their leader every year, the Poljica Prince, and the republic also had its statute that dates back to 1400 (Poljica Statute). The locals will gladly tell you the remainder of their interesting past, along with the legend of their young hero, Mila Gojsalić, while you taste soparnik, a traditional, simple dish from Poljica made with soft wheat flour, Swiss chard, onion, olive and sunflower oil, garlic, salt, and water.

It is so delicious that the European Commission couldn't resist it, awarding

it a protected designation of origin and geographical indication throughout the European Union.

An adrenaline boost You can enjoy soparnik, and many other homemade dishes from the Omiš area, at the famous Radmanove mlinice restaurant and excursion site, located six kilometers from Omiš, in the heart of the Cetina River canyon. There you will feel the country spirit of past times, treat your taste buds to a fabulous feast, and find out that the show depicting the famous Winnetou was filmed in that beautiful untouched nature.

Once you're in the very heart of the canyon, which has had the status of a protected landscape for more than 50 years, it would be a shame not to explore it. Awaken the adventurist within yourself and head out on a rafting or kayaking excursion on the Cetina, and the amount of adrenaline you will feel depends on the route you choose. river, go canyoning, which combines walking along and through the Cetina, swimming under waterfalls and fighting the rapids. Another unique experience you will brag to your friends about for a long time is the zip line - more than three hours of flying above the canyon on two-kilometer long cables, some of which are at a height of up to a hundred meters. The steep canyon cliffs will attract fans of free climbing, while those who love heights can go paragliding.

The great advantage is that, depending on your level of physical fitness, you can try all of it in one day. Of course, our recommendation is that you take your time and schedule your activities over the course of several days, for a full experience.

Fans of windsurfing and hiking will also enjoy themselves in Omiš, and those who like light strolls can choose one of the thematic trails. Trekking buffs will be sure to make time for the trekking races, and the trekking championship that is held in the mountains surrounding Omiš every spring. In the waters surrounding Omiš, divers are sure to find great inspiration, and they will likely also visit Vruja Bay, which

is known as the best diving site and a favorite place for underwater fishing.

If you visit Omiš in the summer months, which we also recommend, explore its riviera. Stanići, Lokva Rogoznica, Mimice, Marušići, and Pisak are just some of the charming Mediterranean fishing villages on the Omiš Riviera, all of them abundant with sandy and pebble beaches splashed by the clear turquoise sea. Trust us, you will remember swimming at the Omiš Riviera for a long time. Reserve summer nights in Omiš for at least one klapa concert. After all, you are in the most famous Croatian klapa city, where the Festival of the Dalmatian Klapa is traditionally held every year. Dalmatian klapa singing has been inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Make sure to listen for a while.

One of Omiš's largest events is held in August - the Pirate Battle. It is a true spectacle that clearly depicts a great battle from the 13th century, where a hundred armed pirates participate on several pirate and Venetian galleons and on smaller boats. Have a look, try, and experience everything in Omiš.

where silence will only be broken by the sound of seagulls, the čuvita (scops owl, the symbol of the island), a loud concert of crickets in the hot summer days, or the roaring of the waves crashing into the rocks. Yes, Šolta is an island for romantics, but also a strong inspirational place where famous works were written by great figures of Croatian literature, such as Petar Hektorović, Vladimir Nazor and Marko Marulić, who wrote his famous poem, Judita, in Piškera Cove. The locals will gladly quote his famous sentence: "Those who sleep on Šolta once, always return".

Cyclists, who know that one of the best ways to relax, but also to get to know the island, is on two wheels, regularly return to the island. Šolta's trails will fulfill the expectations of both professional and recreational cyclists, and riding will reveal incredible views of untouched coves, the sea, and neighboring islands.

You can reach Šolta quickly and easily by ferry, which sails from Split several times daily, and the ride takes less than an hour.

vineyards, through pine forests and lush Mediterranean vegetation, and you can choose from unpaved, but well maintained trails, or paved trails that connect the fishing village and harbor of Stomorska with the village of Maslinica.

Stop and duck into one of the village churches and take a break from riding in one of the taverns or family estates in Gornje Selo and Grohote, and try homemade dishes. The best time to ride bikes in the hot, summer days is in the morning, while it's still cool.

Not only can you explore the island by bike, but also on foot with long walks on trails that lead from the coastal towns - Maslinica, Stomorska, Nečujam, or Rogač - to the heart of the island and its picturesque villages and back.

Head from Grohote, Gornje, Srednje or Donje Selo to the coast, through olive groves and stone streets that pass by churches and taverns, and they lead all the way down to the southern coast, which will take your breath away.

There is no cell phone reception in many coves on Šolta, so plug in to nature's frequency and immerse yourself in it.

The beach in Rogač attracts swimmers of all ages; Exotic Šipkova Cove; The beach in Maslinica is splashed by the turquoise sea, just like the other beaches on Šolta.

Šolta is also an island with many events, one of the most popular being the "Tugging of Mrduje", where, every year, people from the islands of Brač and Šolta surround the islet of Mrduje in their boats, and tug a rope tied around the islet to decide whose it will be that year.

beautiful coves is by kayak. Hop into a kayak on the main beach in Nečujam and row to the nearby, turquoise paradise coves, which you might just have all to yourself. Discover the landscape that Emperor Diocletian chose for himself, where he even had his own fishing pond.

As attractive as the island is on the surface, it is just as magnificent in its depths. The many divers who explore the mysterious world of Šolta's depths, full of ships sunken long ago, spectacular caves, incredible corals, and diverse flora and fauna can confirm that. It is best to head out on an underwater adventure accompanied by experienced, licensed divers from the diving center for safety reasons and their expertise, as well as due to the fact that they will take you to the most beautiful underwater landscapes.

Heavenly beaches Šolta is an excellent place to head out from on excursions to surrounding islands and cities, and you can also explore the island as part of an organized, thematic excursion. Some will take you to the sweet animal world of bees, and enable you to try wild rosemary honey, which the island has been famous for since ancient times, while others will take you to family estates to try Dobričić red wine, homemade liqueurs, olive oil, and various delicacies.

You can also head down to the paradise coves and beaches on your own, and, according to the locals, the most beautiful ones are on the southern side of the island. They are mostly pebble beaches, surrounded by high cliffs, and they are especially popular amongst sailors and adventurers. Most of them are accessible by land, but in many cases, rocky trails lead to them so they aren't often on the tourist route.

Those with a more adventurous spirit will say that is the charm in them.

One of the most famous is Šešula Cove, which can be reached on foot, by bike, and by car. There are two excellent restaurants and a fish farm, where you can buy fresh fish, in the cove.

One of the largest is Tatinja, famous for two islets - reefs, and beautiful pebble beaches that can be reached on foot or by bike. Make sure to visit Senjska, where you will find Gradac, which is believed to be the palace of the Illyrian empress, Teuta. Other beautiful coves include Poganica, Podražanj and Pt. Ražanj, Zaglav, Stračinska, Livka as well as Donja and Gornja Krušica, and don't miss out on the seven islets in the Maslinica archipelago. Some of the largest beaches can be found in the towns of Stomorska, Nečujam, Rogač, and Maslinica, which is a popular nautical base, and home to the impressive Martinis-Marchi Baroque castle, which has been beautifying the fishing village for more than 300 years. 

f you visit the Dalmatian hinterland, which we definitely recommend, find out when fairs, local performances, folk dance concerts, or celebrations of feast days of saints are held in its towns and villages. An integral part of such gatherings is the impressive Nijemo Kolo, which is, even though it is performed elsewhere in the region, unique in its performance method in the Dalmatian hinterland. It is danced in a circle that is occasionally broken off into pairs, and at times the entire dance is performed in pairs that move in a circle, or freely, through the dance area. Kolo is danced in the Dalmatian hinterland without musical accompaniment, and elsewhere it is sometimes danced with the accompaniment of special types of singing in small groups: rere, ganga, or ojkavica, or with the accompaniment of an instrument called diple. Each male dancer performs his own steps, hopping in the closed circle or as part of a pair, at times walking with and leading his

Discovering the world through music The cello imprinted itself on their childhood and made their dreams come true. Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser are gifted cellists, better known today as 2Cellos. They unlocked the door to the international music scene with a violin key and took their place on the most famous stages in the world.

ou have had performances on many stages worldwide. Which performance do you hold in fond memory?

We have had the opportunity and honor of performing at many of the most attractive places in the world, from the Verona Arena to the famous Sydney Opera House. It is a fantastic feeling to go on stage at such powerful venues, and the view of the audience who is there for you and your music fills you

with positive energy. Of course, it's a special feeling to play at home.

The concert in the Pula Arena was unforgettable, and we will especially remember 2016 for the concert on Tomislavac in Zagreb.

Have you already discovered destinations you would like to return to privately?

We were both thrilled with New Zealand, most because of its natural

beauty. It's an entirely different world, which we will definitely return to so we can better explore every corner of that incredible country, but also for a holiday. We also liked South America, but especially Peru for its smiling people, great food, and the best coffee in the world.

What does your ideal vacation look like? After all the travelling you do, is home the best place for you to recharge?

Up until recently we thought it was.

We would rush to catch the first plane to Croatia after every concert, but we came to the conclusion that we missed out on a lot by doing that and we decided it was time to change that. In the future, we plan on staying an extra day in the destinations we play at, to rest, but also to get to know them better.

You have collaborated with many famous musicians. How well do they know Croatia?

Everyone knows about Dubrovnik.

When you first mention that you come from a country called Croatia, some look at you in bewilderment and they aren't sure they know where that is, but then when you mention Dubrovnik, it becomes clear to them. On one hand, we're happy that they know something, but on the other hand, it's a great shame that Croatia is still unrecognizable. Globally, people know a little about the beauty of the Croatian coast, they haven't heard of the capital city, nor of important things like the tie or fountain pen, inventions by Croatian inventors that they use on a daily basis.

Where would you like to perform in the future?

Since we have already performed at the majority of the most famous venues in the world, in the future, we would like to perform as much as possible at some enchanting places that haven't been stages yet.

Perhaps it would be nice to play at some historical sites worldwide.

You were born in Pula and Dubrovnik. What delights you about your hometowns, and what bothers you?

Home is home, and you always see the best parts of it, and love it, but as far as Pula is concerned, I (Stjepan) am most bothered by the fact that the huge potential of the city remains unused. Look at what Verona did with its Arena, which cannot be compared with the beauty and preserved condition of the Pula Arena. It's sad that Pula was a more developed city in ancient times than it is today, when it lives on its old glory. Dubrovnik is another

story. It's now reaching a level where it is overused, which isn't good for the development of the elite tourism the city deserves, and changes will need to be made to preserve that pearl.

In 2012, 2Cellos performed with Elton John at a concert at Buckingham Palace to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.

n exclusive fashion show at ten thousand meters above the Atlantic Ocean - sounds like mission impossible? With Lufthansa, even that is possible! That is just what happened in early February in a Boeing 747-8 on a flight from Frankfurt to New York, to the delight of many passengers who were headed to the "fashion metropolis" for the same reason - for New York Fashion Week. Along with the spectacular fashion show by famous designer Rubin Singer, passengers were also presented the uniforms of the Lufthansa flight crew over the past 60 years. Another true treat on the

flight was a conference on the influence of digitalization on the fashion industry, better said, the second Lufthansa FlyingLab, which connected technology with fashion. Travelers were presented new gadgets, which, besides being attractive fashion accessories (in the form of jewelry), they also have the function of monitoring a person's activity - such as sleeping, heartbeat, meditation, stress...

During the flight, passengers enjoyed the FlyNet service, which enables carefree surfing online, so they had the chance to chat with their families, answer important emails, say hello to

their friends on Facebook, and get information on the most important economic, political, sports, and entertainment news worldwide on Lufthansa's FlyNet site. The company has announced that not only will the service be offered on long-distance flights, but soon, passengers on shorter Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines flights within Europe will also have the opportunity of sending e-mails, doing some online shopping, or enjoying a video at an altitude of ten thousand meters, while they fly over the Alps.

And the flight will be that much more pleasant and quicker, won't it? 

For the first time in a long time, the cost of travelling to Cuba is falling. In 2014, the price grew by a total of 400 percent, stimulated by the decision of the American government to ease limitations on American citizens who wish to travel to Cuba. The number of tourists on Cuba rose significantly, and due to the greater demand, the price of accommodations and transportation also grew. The possible reasons for the current decline of prices include the greater number of cruise arrivals, due to the reduced demand for accommodations, but also the announcements made by the new American president Trump regarding the return of limitations that Obama’s administration eliminated. In accordance with that, it is thought that now is the ideal time to visit that island country.

Booking.com has launched a new support program, Booking.com Booster, which has the aim of helping startup companies around the world that have a plan for positively affecting global tourism. In other words, it is focused on supporting companies dedicated to sustainable tourism in the fields of environmental protection, preservation of cultural heritage, and promoting growth in tourism that supports and develops the local economy and community. The program lasts three weeks, and includes workshops, lectures, and coaching with tourism experts. It will be held in June in Amsterdam, and ends with the chance to win a scholarship in the amount of 500 thousand euro.

Barcelona to limit the number of tourists India introduced free SIM cards for tourists The government of India is preparing a plan according to which every tourist that lands at the Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi with an e-visa will receive a free SIM card. The card will contain 50 Rs (around 0.75 USD) and 50 MB of data traffic, with the aim of easing communication between tourists and their friends and family at home, hotels, tour operators, etc.

Over time, the practice would be implemented at all 15 airports throughout the country.

In Barcelona, there is a plan to introduce new regulations that would forbid the opening of new hotels, even when one of the existing hotels closes down. Citizens of Barcelona listed the excessive number of tourists as the second largest problem in the city, right after unemployment, and they believe that mass tourism has negatively affected the quality of their lives. It is assumed that the regulation will not come into effect before 2019, and the tourism industry strongly opposes it and believes that the limitation of accommodations will not solve the problem since most tourists visit the city for only one day. Of the 32 million tourists in Barcelona in 2016, only 8 million stayed overnight in a hotel.

Tourism trends in the near future

Best digital destinations announced For the second consecutive year, the Digital Country Index has published the results of a survey that measures how many internet users worldwide search for other countries. The searches were divided into five dimensions, including tourism. The list of the most searched digital destinations in the sphere of tourism is led by Spain, followed by Italy, France, Great Britain, and Japan. Politically unstable countries disappointed on the tourism index, although they might lead in searches in one of the other dimensions.

UNWTO forum on gastronomy tourism The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Basque Culinary Center, is organizing the 3rd UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism. The forum will be held on May 8 and 9 in San Sebastian, Spain, and will return to that country every second year. It will gather leading experts in the field of gastronomy tourism, who will discuss the challenges of gastronomy tourism in the world, event management and organization, and the possibilities for the further development of that segment of tourism. As a part of the forum, events will be held in many gastronomy centers throughout the Basque country, which will present the diverse culinary offer of the exhibitors.

Also, instead of sunbathing on a beach, today, tourists are more attracted by active vacations and adventures, new experiences, and unfamiliar activities, and the popularity of religious tourism is also on the rise.

Safest airlines in 2017 For the fourth consecutive year, Airline Ratings, a specialized international website that evaluates the safety and quality of services in the airline industry, has named Qantas the safest airline in the world. Also in the top 20 were British Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, and Finnair.

The top 10 best rated low-cost airlines included Aer Lingus, JetBlue, Thomas Cook, and WestJet. The website announced that 2016 was one of the safest years in the history of aviation, and that flying is still the safest way to travel.

t's morning, December 15, 2016.

We find our way through the fog to the parking lot that was our point of departure for our trip to East Tyrol.

Upon arrival at the place where we met other travelers, we noticed that

we left one of our mobile phones at home. Oh no... How would we check our mails over the next few days, answer the urgent ones, and take calls?

A hundred questions came to mind, but we soon concluded that perhaps it was the best thing to happen to us before our trip. Sometimes, you need to unplug and let the new experiences take control. We were ready for our adventure in East Tyrol.

On a hedonistic note In just a five-hour ride, we replaced the cold and foggy Zagreb morning for sunny Sillian, a town in the Hochpusteral Valley, located near the Austrian-Italian border and surrounded by white ski slopes that attract not only skiers, but also those who would like to try that adventure. Although we wanted to get closer to them right after settling in at the Sporthotel Sillian (a well-known address amongst 98

many skiers and families), after lunch we were more inclined to take a short nap at the comfortable hotel room, which harmoniously combines modern and alpine design.

We spent our first evening in East Tyrol in the center of the region, in Lienz, located 30 kilometers away, at its charming and idyllic Christmas Fair, with mulled wine, Christmas carols, crackling fires, and wooden houses full of traditional products. Once again, the Austrians convinced us that they are "Masters of Advent".

We awaited our first morning in Sillian. Part of the group headed over to the ski lift, located across from the hotel, and enjoyed skiing on the 60 kilometers of ski slopes, some of which head directly down to the hotel (ski-in/ski-out). The ski resort also has an attractive snow park, and fans of winter sports can also enjoy

cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing... Part of the group, including us, chose an entirely different experience - a horse-drawn carriage ride in the idyllic landscape.

We continued our morning with a visit to the world-famous wafer factory, Loacker, and enjoying sweet treats. The rest of the day and evening also passed in a hedonistic note, with massages with warm aromatic oils and relaxing in the hotel's spa zone. The three thousand square meters of the relaxing zone contain indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam baths, massage showers, and a fitness center, and you can choose between many massages, and beauty and relaxation treatments.

Relaxing in the spa zone was also a logical continuation of the day for those who spent the day on the snowy slopes. Dinner with selected Austrian specialties followed.

Luxury immersed in nature The following day, we headed to the Großglockner Resort, which bears the name of the highest peak in Austria, Großglockner (3798 m). After an hour-long ride, we reached the KalsMatrei ski region, also the largest ski resort in East Tyrol, which will satisfy both professional and recreational skiers with its 110 km of slopes, of varying difficulties. At that impressive mountain landscape, right next to the ski slopes, the luxurious Gradonna Mountain Resort is nicely tucked in, and extra care was taken to respect nature and principles of sustainability during construction. That can be felt at every step you take there. You will feel like royalty in the comfortable, contemporary rooms at the hotel and in the mountain cabins (châlet), and one of the special features of the resort

is the fact that it is car-free. In other words, upon arrival, you leave your car in the underground garage because you won't need it since you are staying at the resort. So, guests are ensured greater peace and relaxation, and the sounds of the mountains and nature are the only things you will hear there.

The resort is located at the entrance of the oldest and largest Austrian National Park, Hohe Tauern, which is special, amongst other things, for the more than 300 alpine peaks at a height above three thousand meters. If you come there in the spring and the summer, you will enjoy hiking and taking long walks through the forests and aromatic alpine meadows, discovering the incredible panoramas and the diverse flora and fauna (which you can also do accompanied by a ranger), so it is also possible to come across a mountain goat, a groundhog, or see the magnificent flight of an eagle...

Head over to the large boulders in the forest called Gradonna, which the resort was named after, where some of the oldest artifacts in East Tyrol were found.

A chapel was built into the mountain, and you can find refreshment in a mountain spring next to it. You will also come across cyclists, and you can also head out on a long ride on mountain bike or electric bike yourself.

Whether you are a skier or a hiker, make sure to take a break at the Adler Lounge, located at the peak of the Kals-Matrei area, at 2600 meters, with a magnificent view of GroĂ&#x;glockner. If you aren't up for exercise, the luxurious mountain lounge can also be reached by gondola. Besides an unforgettable view of 60 mountain peaks higher than three thousand meters, here you will also enjoy superb culinary delicacies, based on fresh seasonal ingredients, and excellent wines. If you don't want to spend time cooking meals, you can eat them at the hotel, order delivery to your chalet, or you can request the services of a chef who will prepare meals with you at the chalet. In that way, you will learn to prepare some new, delicious dishes, while also discovering the culinary secrets of top-notch chefs.

Adler Lounge is a popular place for skiers and gourmets to take a break; The superb spa center with saunas, pools, and steam baths is part of the resort; The group of Croatian journalists couldn't resist the scrumptious delicacies at the Gradonna Mountain Resort.

If you decide to eat at the hotel, not even the pickiest taste buds will be able to resist the vast spread of high quality dishes. For example, for breakfast, count on having each ingredient in at least ten different versions - from types of bread and pastries, cheeses, marmalades, cereals, honey, which you will also, for example, find with honeycombs.

An enchanting sight: Cinque Terre Even if you haven't been there yet, you will surely recognize the landscape of Cinque Terre (Five Lands). The name describes five fishing villages on the Italian coast: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, which, together with the hills that surround them, are part of the Cinque Terre National Park. The famous Italian destination, which was inscribed on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1997, is famous for its steep cliffs that rise above the sea, and are covered in colorful houses.
