MOJITO The Mojito is one of the world’s best-selling cocktails. Light and refreshing with a citrus kick, the cocktail’s creation is thanks to Sir Francis Drake. In the 16th century, it is believed the Mojito was invented on board Sir Francis Drake’s ship when many of his men began to fall ill with dysentery and scurvy. Believing they would find medicines in Havana, Sir Francis Drake returned to the ship with ‘aguardiente de cana’, a crude form of rum, known as “firewater of the sugar cane”. Mixing the cane spirit with sugar, lime and mint, he created a drink with perceived medicinal value, which likely alleviated symptoms thanks to the lime juice treating scurvy and the mint settling the stomach. Originally named the El Draque, after Sir Francis Drake, this drink is widely believed to have been the world’s first ever cocktail. The cocktail was then ‘dolled up’ with the addition of carbonated water, ice and served in a tall glass when it was given its Mojito name. To this day, restaurant-bar La Bodeguita del medio in Havana, Cuba claims to be the cocktail’s birthplace with Ernest Hemmingway apparently a fan of their version of the drink. Our Mojito adds a splash of lemon juice for an extra zesty kick!
