GREEDY GARDENER’S ANXIETY: I should have made up my mind to thin my fruits By Linna Roemer, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer When I was a 5th grade student in elementary school, our class was given a peach tree to grow. We watered, weeded, loosened the soil and covered the fruits with paper bags...I daydreamed of having my own peach tree, where I would sit on the branch like a monkey greedily eating the peaches non-stop. For 55 years I lived in a very large city and growing my own peach tree was still just a dream. Since that time, I have moved out of the city and purchased land where I immediately planted peach trees the very next spring. In three years the tree was producing flowers and a few fruits. This year, the tree had a lot of flowers and soon there was a profusion of small peaches on the limbs. I knew that I should thin them. I had read “Cornell’s Guide to Growing Fruit at Home”. On p. 37, it stated “The proper time to thin fruit is about two to three weeks after bloom, after early fruit drop when fruits are about the size of a quarter. The first step is to remove small and insect- or diseased-fruit.” OK. I removed small, insect and diseased fruit. “Then remove all but one fruit where there are several in a single cluster, leaving the largest of the fruit.” Oh! No! Just leave one?! This means I would be throwing away four fifths of the fruit! They were healthy and

would grow many fruits for me, the greedy one. I didn’t have the heart to throw so many future delicious peaches away. I eagerly watched the peaches swell, thinking about their juicy delicious taste, while the branch slowly bowed. I was concerned, but oh...all those peaches! Later, I went out to admire my ripening fruit to find that the branch had broken under the weight of all those peaches! The tree looked so pitiful! It was not upright anymore and it appeared weak; almost to the point that I feared it would fall down. I didn’t harvest good quality peaches. What is worse the broken branch had exposed the interior wood where a disease or insect could take hold and cause the tree to die. I was very anxious! I cut the broken branch down with a nice pruning cut and bought a pruning sealant to help keep the tree healthy until it can bounce back. What a good lesson for me! According to the book, next year I’ll thin the fruits till they “are spaced 4 to 8 inches apart.” fb BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH (ELCA) 79 Brooklyn Street Portville, NY Pastor Ivy Gauvin Sunday Worship...........9:00am Sunday School............10:30am

KNOW THAT THE DRUG CONTROLS THE ADDICT Some friends and families of addicts think that an addict can control his or her addiction and could stop at anytime. This is not true. Once a person is addicted to a drug they have to have it. With most drugs the body depends on them and without them an individual can suffer through terrible withdrawal symptoms. This is where rehabilitation comes in. Most addicts, without treatment will not be able to stop using drugs. For more information on how a drug controls a person call Narconon Arrowhead today at 800-468-6933. fb CERES COMMUNITY CEMETERY ASSOCIATION The Ceres Community Cemetery Association will meet on Thursday, September 12, 7:00 p.m., at the Ceres Methodist Church. You may be busy with freezing, canning, drying, or just plain cooking and eating your bounty. However, now is also the time to think about saving some valuable seeds for next year’s garden. Practiced generation after generation, seed saving is part

of our gardening heritage. Heirloom varieties are becoming more popular as evident in listings in seed catalogs and seed-banks springing up across the country. Collecting seeds allows you to self-perpetuate your garden, knowing that the seeds saved are ones that thrived well in your garden’s soil and climate. It is also thrifty and satisfying knowing that you have seeds safely tucked away ready to plant

come spring. Nature is very generous with her seeds and you may have plenty to share with others too. All vegetables produce seeds; the easiest vegetable seeds to beginning collecting are tomatoes, peppers, beans, and peas. Other seeds can prove to be more challenging, but with some practice, they too can be successfully saved. Remember, seeds collected from hybrid plants may not reliably produce a plant like the one you grew. The seed packet or plant label should note if the plant is a hybrid (F1, for example). Another consideration is pollination. Insect pollinators, such as bees, often flit from one plant to another, cross-pollinating as they go. Thus seeds collected from squashes and pumpkins often will not produce the same plant as the one you grew. But some of the most fun is growing the seed next year to see what nature has created. There are also vegetables that need a twoyear span to produce their seeds, like carrots and parsnips. Once you have decided on the type of vegetable seed you want to collect, you need to select the best specimen possible. This could mean selecting the tomato that is the tastiest, largest, or overall vigorous. Don’t forget you can collect seeds from produce purchased elsewhere, like at the local farmer’s market. Talk to the sellers/gardeners personally, if possible, and get their take on the specific qualities of the produce they are selling. Wet processing is for seeds that are embedded in the fruit of the plant, such as tomatoes. The seeds and surrounding flesh are placed in a small container. Left in a warm spot, the seeds will ferment in a few days. After mold

completely covers the top, the seed mixture is poured into a larger container and water is added. As you swirl the mixture around, healthy seeds will sink to the bottom. Carefully pour off the top water and debris. Keep repeating this step until you only have seeds left in the bottom. Place the seeds singlelayered on a flat surface at room temperature with good air circulation, stirring occasionally with your finger. Never place drying seeds in direct sun or where the temperature is over 95 degrees and avoid placing on paper products as seeds tend to stick to those surfaces. Pepper seeds just need to be spread out to dry. For legumes, such as peas and beans, dry processing techniques are used. Leave the pods on the vine until brown and dry. One test is to listen for the seeds rattling in the pod. Once you have picked them, store the pods in a dry place for several weeks before shelling. After seeds are thoroughly dry, store them in a cool, dry place using airtight containers. Many gardeners keep their collected seeds in the refrigerator or cellar in baby food jars or canning jars. Label the seeds with the date and vegetable name. Time to plant them next year will be here before you know it! fb OBI COMMUNITY CHURCH Pastor: David Cook 585-933-7205 Sunday Services: Sunday School...........9:00am Morning Worship ....10:30am Evening Service..............6pm Wed. THE GYPSY MOTH - Fall Control By Rick Martin: Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener The Gypsy Moth was originally brought from Europe by Leopold Trouvelot to the United States in 1869 in an effort to improve the silkworm industry. Several cases of the larvae were overturned in a windstorm near Boston and the larvae were released into the forests of Massachusetts. Within 20 years the species caused serious harm to those forests. Since that time millions of acres of forest lands have been defoliated in the northeast. In 1991 and 1993 ships from Russia and Germany introduced the species to the northwest and the Carolinas. The picture shows a female adult moth laying eggs on tree bark. Notice the darker color under her wings, this is the egg sac. The caterpillars are usually black and quite hairy with two double rows of spots from front to back. The first five pair of spots are blue and the second six pair are orange to red. The female adult is white and black, and the male is grey and black.

The larval (caterpillar) stage is the one that does all of the damage to the trees by eating the leaves until the tree is completely defoliated. A vigorous hardwood tree can survive this damage but cannot survive two or more defoliations. Oak trees are their favorite, however they also like the leaves of apple, basswood, cherry, elm, hemlock and maple. In a severe outbreak of Gypsy moths, any vegetation is at risk.

There are a number of ways you can control Gypsy moths around your home that do not require the use of pesticides or insecticides. Use a common Notary Service garden hose with a spray attachment and spray your trees with insecticidal soap. This will kill a great many of the caterpillars you have on 3691 Rt. 155, Port Allegany, Pa. *Snowmobiles * ATVs your trees very quickly. Just plain water can kill them if you • Penn Dot Online • Registrations have good water pressure. •Plates • Transfers • Titles An effective way to eliminate them is the use of 814-642-9424 barrier bands; that wrap around the trunk of your trees. The bands can be purchased at local nurseries or department stores that have garden centers. The bands are coated with a sticky substance that traps the caterpillars when they try to cross over them; simply scrape them off when the trap is covered. You may have to replace the bands if they become worn. You can do the same thing with burlap strips. You just tie some twine around the trees and drape the burlap over the twine. The caterpillars hide under the burlap when they come down from the trees. Just scrape them into a jar of soapy water. You might be wondering why we are talking about the caterpillar stage when they are in the adult moth stage right now; one of the best control methods is done in late September. Find the egg sacs where the adult moth has laid them on their favorite trees and scrape the sacs off and destroy them. If you don’t, in the spring the eggs will hatch and there will be around five hundred caterpillars in each egg sac, so destroying them this fall is much easier then dealing with them in their larval stage next year! fb

With its numbers in Pennsylvania continuing to soar ever higher, the bald eagle soon could be removed from the state’s list of threatened species. The Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Bureau of Wildlife Management is recommending the bald eagle be upgraded from “threatened” to “protected” status statewide. Doug Gross, a biologist who heads the bureau’s Endangered and Nongame Birds section, addressed the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners at the board’s working group meeting on Monday, saying the bald eagle’s remarkable comeback in Pennsylvania has reached a point where eagles safely can be removed from threatened species list. As of Monday, Gross said, 266 nesting pairs have been confirmed statewide so far this year. And while that count is not final and the number of confirmed nesting pairs still could rise, the updated figure represents the continuation of an upward trend in Pennsylvania. In 2012, researchers documented 237 nesting pairs statewide. “This year marks just another high point in the spectacular and widespread recovery of bald eagles in Pennsylvania, and it’s clear that the definition of a threatened species no longer describes them accurately,” Gross said. According to Pennsylvania regulations, a threatened species is defined as one that, throughout its range in the Commonwealth, may become endangered in the foreseeable future. The Bureau of Wildlife Management’s recommendation to

delist the bald eagle as a state threatened species is based on eagles achieving a number of goals outlined in the state’s bald-eagle management plan. The plan calls for delisting eagles as threatened if all of four criteria are met for five consecutive years. There must be at least 150 active nests statewide; successful pairs in at least 40 counties; at least a 60 percent success rate of known nests; and productivity of at least 1.2 eaglets fledged per successful nest. Three of those criteria already have been met for a fiveyear span, and eagles in 2013 will exceed for a fifth-straight year the requirement of nesting successfully in at least 40 counties, Gross said. Determining nest success is the biggest challenge in eagle monitoring and the agency welcomes information about the success and productivity of nests, Gross said. The proposal to delist will be made formally to the Board of Game Commissioners at the board’s regular meeting in September. The board then could choose to vote on the proposal at a subsequent meeting. That process will afford the public with an opportunity to comment on the proposal, Gross noted. Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe noted the proposal to delist comes in the 30th anniversary year of the agency’s first efforts to restore baldeagle populations statewide. When the Game Commission launched its restoration program in 1983, only three pairs of nesting eagles remained in the state - all of them located in Crawford County, in northwestern Pennsylvania along the Ohio border. At that time, eagle populations had been decimated by the effects of water pollution, persecution and compromised nest success caused by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT. Three decades later, Pennsylvania’s booming bald-eagle population represents one of the great success stories in wildlife conservation history, Roe said. “It seems that each passing year writes a new chapter in the story of the bald eagle’s success in Pennsylvania and the latest numbers, and the recommendation to delist the eagle as a state threatened species, is the best news yet,” Roe said. “But the story isn’t over. Pennsylvania has plenty of good bald-eagle habitat that’s not currently being used by eagles. And as the years roll on, I’m sure eagles will give us plenty more to celebrate.” Gross said removing bald eagles from the state threatened species list would neither hinder eagle populations in Pennsylvania nor knock off course the species’ comeback here. If the bald eagle is delisted, the bird will continue to be protected under the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (the Eagle Act), the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Lacey Act. Under the Eagle Act, those who harm or disturb eagles are subject to a civil penalty of up to one year in jail or a $5,000 fine for their first offense, and criminal convictions can result in fines as high as $250,000. “We will not be abandoning the bald eagle, but giving it

less emphasis as we turn to new challenges in bird conservation in the state,” Gross said. The Game Commission, too, will continue to follow its bald-eagle management plan, which calls for the agency to monitor nests, at least through 2017. Likewise, the commission will continue to urge those who encounter eagle nests to keep their distance, and not do anything to frighten the birds. The agency has recommended that people get no closer than 1,000 feet from any eagle nest. Disturbances that cause adult eagles to fly from the nest could compromise the success of that nest. They are more likely to abandon a nest disturbed early in the nesting cycle. Additionally, eaglets can respond to frightening situations by trying to fledge the nest prematurely, and sometimes die as a result. A wealth of information on bald eagles, where to view them and proper nest etiquette is available at the Game Commission’s web site, by clicking on the bald eagle viewing icon, Gross said. The bald eagle was delisted as a state endangered species and reclassified as a threatened species in 2005, when about 100 nests were confirmed statewide. Especially when considering the sharp jump in eagle populations since then, it might seem hard to believe just how bleak the eagle’s future appeared just 30 years ago, when restoration began. Initially, 12 seven-week-old eaglets were taken from nests in Saskatchewan and brought to specially constructed towers at two sites. At these towers - at Haldeman Island on the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, and at Shohola Lake in Pike County - the birds were “hacked,” a process by which the eaglets essentially are raised by humans, but without knowing it, then released gradually into the wild. In all, 88 bald eaglets from Canada were released from the sites as part of the program, which was funded in part by the Richard King Mellon Foundation of Pittsburgh and the federal Endangered Species Fund. Today, bald eagles inhabit 56 counties statewide and they continue to push the boundaries of their range. Just this year, three pairs of bald eagles nested in Allegheny County, two of them within the Pittsburgh city limits. Gross said that in addition to nesting along the state’s major rivers and lakes, bald eagles now are nesting along medium-sized high-quality streams with good fishing and alternate foraging areas. “They are teaching us that there is a lot more eagle habitat in Pennsylvania than we imagined,” Gross said. “Eagles are adopting the kinds of quality places that outdoors people also enjoy.” And with more habitat to be taken over, Roe predicts further growth will follow. “It’s something of which every Pennsylvanian can be proud,” he said. Commissioners meeting: The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners will meet Monday, Sept. 23 and Tuesday, Sept. 24 in Westmoreland County. The meetings will be held at the Lamplighter Restaurant, 6566 William Penn Highway, Delmont, Pa. The board will hear public comment and agency staff reports Sept. 23, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Individuals interested in offering public testimony - limited to five minutes - can begin to register at 7:45 a.m. on a first-come, first-to-speak basis. Then on Sept. 24, the board will take up its prepared agenda at a meeting beginning at 8:30 a.m. f

She serves on the Volunteer Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society and is part of the newly formed “Volunteers that Care” program to help cancer patients in the community. Also honored during the program was Maggie Kinney, the Coudersport girls’ volleyball team plus, Cole Memorial’s “Think Pink” employee team. Through their combined efforts a waterfall was able to be placed by the chemotherapy area windows of the Patterson Cancer Care Center for patients to enjoy during their treatments. The vision for the water feature came from Maggie Kinney during a school senior project to raise funds for this project in honor of her mother, Brenda Kinney, a breast cancer survivor. The Coudersport Girls Volleyball team held a “Dig Pink” event to raise funds for the project in memory of Melissa Merrick. Melissa’s husband, John Merrick was the girls’ former teacher and athletic director at the school. Finally, the Cole Memorial staffs’ “Think Pink” team raised funds by holding a basket raffle and bake sale, in honor of all cancer patients. “The goal of the healing garden is to offer cancer patients, family members and visitors a chance to be surrounded by nature and reduce stress,” said Mrs. Levavasseur. “Thank you to all of our honorees for their generous donations and caring for our patients during one of their hardest times.” A blessing of the garden was presented by Pastor Pete Tremblay of the Coudersport Free Memorial Church and closing remarks were made by Kari Karpinski, director of Community Outreach & Fund Development. As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising

Any amendments you add to your soil can take up to 6 months to work their magic (i.e., lime or sulphur). Cornell University Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are hosting fall pH clinics starting Sept. 15th.

Your soil pH number is linked to how vigorously your plants will grow. Most gardens flourish in the range of 6.07.0, slight acidic to neutral. Many of us lucky enough to be within this range won’t have to add lime or sulphur to our soils. Many soils in Allegany County range in the mid to high 5.0’s (slightly acidic); the parent materials our soil is made from influences this number. This means soils that have not had amendments, such as compost, leaves, lawn

plant cannot use it. Have your soil tested for free to see if you need to add lime or sulphur to adjust the pH and see your garden respond next year! Limit of 2 soil samples per person. Master Gardeners are hosting pH Clinics this fall where you can have your soil tested for free! First determine how many samples to take. Different gardens/beds, lawns, areas with different soil types, areas where amendments such as limestone were added, areas with plants having different pH requirements, good/bad areas, etc. should be sampled separately. 2.) Individual samples should be taken from the upper 6 to 8 inches of soil. 3.) Each soil sample is comprised of 5 to 10 individual samples obtained by walking back and forth diagonally across the area or randomly chosen throughout the area to be sampled. 4.) clippings, etc., routinely added may require an addition of lime to meet the minimal neutral pH. pH also affects what nutrients the plant can take up in its roots. When pH is high (over 7.0) iron, manganese, copper and zinc in the soil become unavailable to plants. Conversely, when pH is low (below 6.0) calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium become unavailable. The nutrient may still be in the soil, however it is bound up in the soil due to the pH and the

Mix the soil thoroughly in the bucket; wearing clean gloves will reduce contamination of the soil sample. 7.) Next remove two 8 ounce cupfuls of the soil in the container and place this in a

What do you wish? A father was telling his little girl what his own childhood was like. He said, “We used to skate outside on a frozen pond for hours and hours until way after dark. And I had a swing made from a tire and it hung from a tree in our front yard and I’d swing and sing in my loudest voice. And we rode our pony that was named Silver all around the farm and down to the pond. And in the summertime, we picked wild raspberries and ate them until we thought we would pop.” The little girl was so wide-eyed, taking in all of these fun times her father had as a little boy. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!” Do you ever wish you’d known someone sooner? Or, talked with a friend more often? Or, taken time out to enjoy life more? Do you ever wish you’d had more fun with your children? Or, taken life less seriously and played more often? Get to know the people around you sooner--like today. Go visit your father like you’ve been meaning to. Call that school teacher who meant so much to you and thank her. As you do, you make a positive life at work and home, not just a living.
