GREEDY GARDENER’S ANXIETY: I should have made up my mind to thin my fruits By Linna Roemer, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer When I was a 5th grade student in elementary school, our class was given a peach tree to grow. We watered, weeded, loosened the soil and covered the fruits with paper bags...I daydreamed of having my own peach tree, where I would sit on the branch like a monkey greedily eating the peaches non-stop. For 55 years I lived in a very large city and growing my own peach tree was still just a dream. Since that time, I have moved out of the city and purchased land where I immediately planted peach trees the very next spring. In three years the tree was producing flowers and a few fruits. This year, the tree had a lot of flowers and soon there was a profusion of small peaches on the limbs. I knew that I should thin them. I had read “Cornell’s Guide to Growing Fruit at Home”. On p. 37, it stated “The proper time to thin fruit is about two to three weeks after bloom, after early fruit drop when fruits are about the size of a quarter. The first step is to remove small and insect- or diseased-fruit.” OK. I removed small, insect and diseased fruit. “Then remove all but one fruit where there are several in a single cluster, leaving the largest of the fruit.” Oh! No! Just leave one?! This means I would be throwing away four fifths of the fruit! They were healthy and
would grow many fruits for me, the greedy one. I didn’t have the heart to throw so many future delicious peaches away. I eagerly watched the peaches swell, thinking about their juicy delicious taste, while the branch slowly bowed. I was concerned, but oh...all those peaches! Later, I went out to admire my ripening fruit to find that the branch had broken under the weight of all those peaches! The tree looked so pitiful! It was not upright anymore and it appeared weak; almost to the point that I feared it would fall down. I didn’t harvest good quality peaches. What is worse the broken branch had exposed the interior wood where a disease or insect could take hold and cause the tree to die. I was very anxious! I cut the broken branch down with a nice pruning cut and bought a pruning sealant to help keep the tree healthy until it can bounce back. What a good lesson for me! According to the book, next year I’ll thin the fruits till they “are spaced 4 to 8 inches apart.” fb BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH (ELCA) 79 Brooklyn Street Portville, NY Pastor Ivy Gauvin Sunday Worship...........9:00am Sunday School............10:30am

KNOW THAT THE DRUG CONTROLS THE ADDICT Some friends and families of addicts think that an addict can control his or her addiction and could stop at anytime. This is not true. Once a person is addicted to a drug they have to have it. With most drugs the body depends on them and without them an individual can suffer through terrible withdrawal symptoms. This is where rehabilitation comes in. Most addicts, without treatment will not be able to stop using drugs. For more information on how a drug controls a person call Narconon Arrowhead today at 800-468-6933. fb CERES COMMUNITY CEMETERY ASSOCIATION The Ceres Community Cemetery Association will meet on Thursday, September 12, 7:00 p.m., at the Ceres Methodist Church. You may be busy with freezing, canning, drying, or just plain cooking and eating your bounty. However, now is also the time to think about saving some valuable seeds for next year’s garden. Practiced generation after generation, seed saving is part
of our gardening heritage. Heirloom varieties are becoming more popular as evident in listings in seed catalogs and seed-banks springing up across the country. Collecting seeds allows you to self-perpetuate your garden, knowing that the seeds saved are ones that thrived well in your garden’s soil and climate. It is also thrifty and satisfying knowing that you have seeds safely tucked away ready to plant

come spring. Nature is very generous with her seeds and you may have plenty to share with others too. All vegetables produce seeds; the easiest vegetable seeds to beginning collecting are tomatoes, peppers, beans, and peas. Other seeds can prove to be more challenging, but with some practice, they too can be successfully saved. Remember, seeds collected from hybrid plants may not reliably produce a plant like the one you grew. The seed packet or plant label should note if the plant is a hybrid (F1, for example). Another consideration is pollination. Insect pollinators, such as bees, often flit from one plant to another, cross-pollinating as they go. Thus seeds collected from squashes and pumpkins often will not produce the same plant as the one you grew. But some of the most fun is growing the seed next year to see what nature has created. There are also vegetables that need a twoyear span to produce their seeds, like carrots and parsnips. Once you have decided on the type of vegetable seed you want to collect, you need to select the best specimen possible. This could mean selecting the tomato that is the tastiest, largest, or overall vigorous. Don’t forget you can collect seeds from produce purchased elsewhere, like at the local farmer’s market. Talk to the sellers/gardeners personally, if possible, and get their take on the specific qualities of the produce they are selling. Wet processing is for seeds that are embedded in the fruit of the plant, such as tomatoes. The seeds and surrounding flesh are placed in a small container. Left in a warm spot, the seeds will ferment in a few days. After mold
completely covers the top, the seed mixture is poured into a larger container and water is added. As you swirl the mixture around, healthy seeds will sink to the bottom. Carefully pour off the top water and debris. Keep repeating this step until you only have seeds left in the bottom. Place the seeds singlelayered on a flat surface at room temperature with good air circulation, stirring occasionally with your finger. Never place drying seeds in direct sun or where the temperature is over 95 degrees and avoid placing on paper products as seeds tend to stick to those surfaces. Pepper seeds just need to be spread out to dry. For legumes, such as peas and beans, dry processing techniques are used. Leave the pods on the vine until brown and dry. One test is to listen for the seeds rattling in the pod. Once you have picked them, store the pods in a dry place for several weeks before shelling. After seeds are thoroughly dry, store them in a cool, dry place using airtight containers. Many gardeners keep their collected seeds in the refrigerator or cellar in baby food jars or canning jars. Label the seeds with the date and vegetable name. Time to plant them next year will be here before you know it! fb OBI COMMUNITY CHURCH Pastor: David Cook 585-933-7205 Sunday Services: Sunday School...........9:00am Morning Worship ....10:30am Evening Service..............6pm Wed. The civil service exams will be held on November 16, 2013. There are separate exams and different qualifications for becoming an ECO or Forest Ranger. Potential applicants should closely review qualifications required for each position to determine which exam they are eligible to take. Those who want to apply for both positions, and meet the required qualifications, must submit separate applications and will be required to take both examinations. A full summary of qualifications, salary, and application procedures can be found at: http://www.cs.ny.gov/ examannouncements/types/oc/. Applications are being accepted until October 2, 2013. Exam scores will be used to rank candidates and create eligible lists DEC will use to fill openings for ECOs or Forest Rangers. Although the exam is being offered, there is no guarantee that there will be openings; however, the eligibility list from this exam is expected to remain active for up to four years.

Environmental Conservation Officers- Environmental Conservation Officers are police officers who enforce New York’s Environmental Conservation Law to protect the state’s natural resources and environment. The first ECOs were appointed to serve back in 1880. Job duties of an ECO include investigating environment complaints, including those pertaining to fish and wildlife, environmental quality and handling of hazardous materials. ECOs also interact with user groups to promote safe and wise use of New York’s natural resources. An ECO may work long or irregular hours conducting outdoor patrols and are required to carry a firearm. ECOs often work alone and patrol in remote locations throughout the state on boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, or on foot. ECOs are police officers under New York law, which requires that they be a U.S. citizen when appointed, a New York State resident pursuant to the Public Officers Law, licensed to operate a motor vehicle when appointed, and legally eligible to carry firearms. To take the exam, an applicant must be 35 years old or younger on the day of the written test (some exceptions pertain to military duty). ECO trainees must be at least 20 years old when appointed. The
physical and medical condition of potential trainees will be evaluated to ensure the candidate can perform the duties of the position. Minimum qualifications to take the ECO exam include:•A bachelor’s degree or higher, supplemented by at least 18 credit hours of qualifying coursework; or•An associate’s degree, supplemented by 18 hours of course qualifying coursework, and•One year of experience in freshwater or marine sciences, wildlife, forestry, environmental engineering or environmental technology; or•One year experience as a police officer with appropriate certification; or•Two years of active U.S. military service, with an honorable discharge. Forest Rangers- New York Forest Rangers have protected the state’s public lands, natural resources and residents for more than 125 years. Rangers are police officers under state law and their duties may include search and rescue operations; enforcement of state laws, including New York’s Environmental Conservation Law; wildfire management, including prevention and suppression; and public outreach and education to adults and children related to safe use and the protection of natural resources. Forest Rangers are required to maintain headquarters within the geographical limits of their assigned patrol areas. They are eligible to earn overtime. Since Forest Rangers are police officers under New York law, a Ranger must be a U.S. citizen when appointed, a New York State resident pursuant to the Public Officers Law, licensed to operate a motor vehicle when appointed, and legally eligible to carry firearms. To take the exam, an applicant must be 35 years old or younger on the day of the written test (some exceptions pertain to military duty). Ranger trainees must be at least 20 years old when appointed. The physical and medical condition of potential trainees will be evaluated to ensure the candidate can perform the duties of the position. Minimum qualifications to take the Forest Ranger exam include:•A bachelor’s degree or higher, supplemented by at least 30 credit hours in environmental/life sciences; or•An associate’s degree in forestry, forest technology, forest management, natural resource management, forest recreation, forest engineering, or environmental engineering; or•An associate’s degree supplemented by 18 credit hours of course qualifying coursework in environmental/life sciences, and•Two years of qualifying technical/professional work experience in the natural resources management field; or•Two years of active U.S. military service, with an honorable discharge. ROBERT O’CONNOR HONORED AS TOP NEW YORK CONSERVATION POLICE OFFICER DEC Investigator Receives “Officer of the Year Award” for Outstanding Service New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigation (BECI) Lieutenant Robert O’Connor was named the “2012 New York Officer of the Year” by the Northeast Conservation Law Enforcement Chiefs Association (NECLECA). NECLECA consists of the law enforcement chiefs from 13 Northeastern states, three Eastern provinces of Canada and the United States and Canadian Federal Conservation Law Enforcement agencies. “Lieutenant O’Connor is a tremendous asset to DEC’s Division of Law Enforcement and is extremely deserving of this honor,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “His notable work ethic, integrity and professionalism make him an outstanding Investigator that DEC is proud to have working on the public’s behalf in environmental criminal enforcement.” Lieutenant O’Connor has served with distinction in DEC’s Division of Law Enforcement for nearly twenty-five years. After completing DEC’s eighth Basic Academy for Police Officers in 1989, O’Connor was initially assigned to patrol Westchester County. He transferred to DEC’s Region 9 office in 1992, where he has been serving since. As an Environmental Conservation Officer in Region 9, Officer O’Connor excelled at enforcing the entire range of fish and wildlife conservation law, educating the public and solving numerous cases, including the recovery of the renowned New York State “Lucky Buck” original antlers that had been missing for over a decade. In 2005, O’Connor was promoted to Investigator and joined DEC’s Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigation (BECI) Unit, where he worked diligently to protect the environment and public health and safety through investigations into environmental crimes and crimes against the state’s fish and wildlife resources. Since becoming an Investigator, O’Connor has completed more than 150 investigations, some spanning months, on cases ranging from large federal asbestos and air quality crimes to in-depth hunter related shootings and endangered species cases. He contributed extensively to DEC’s Operation Shellshock, which made strides in addressing the sale and trafficking of endangered reptiles in New York State and beyond. He also played an essential role in the investigation and trial of the highly publicized Tonawanda Coke case, whose verdict represents the second only time that a conviction has been obtained for a Criminal Clean Air Act case involving airborne toxins. As an Investigator, O’Connor also received Captain’s Commendations for the successful prosecution of a company for hazardous waste felonies and for his investigative work that led to the arrest and conviction in the poisoning death of two Bald Eagles and numerous other birds. During his years of service with DEC’s Division of Law Enforcement, Lieutenant O’Connor has supported responses to several major emergency events, including his assistance as a

Your soil pH number is linked to how vigorously your plants will grow. Most gardens flourish in the range of 6.07.0, slight acidic to neutral. Many of us lucky enough to be within this range won’t have to add lime or sulphur to our soils. Many soils in Allegany County range in the mid to high 5.0’s (slightly acidic); the parent materials our soil is made from influences this number. This means soils that have not had amendments, such as compost, leaves, lawn

Repeat this procedure at each of the 5 to 10 random spots and place the soil from these spots in the same container. 6.) Mix the soil thoroughly in the bucket; wearing clean gloves will reduce contamination of the soil sample. 7.) Next remove two 8 ounce cupfuls of the soil in the container and place this in a
plastic bag. If the soil sample is overly moist, allow to dry a few days. Secure the bag. This is your soil sample for that area. 8.) Mark the outside of the bag with an identification (i.e. #1, #2, or “A”‚ “B”, or “East”, “West”, Upper Garden, Perennial Flower bed, etc.). Keep the identification simple and something you will remember. Repeat this entire procedure for each additional garden, landscape bed, lawn, etc. fb

DIG UP THE DIRT ON YOUR SOIL WITH CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION MASTER GARDENERS Did you know, the best time to test your soil and adjust its pH level is now, in the fall, not in the spring! Any amendments you add to your soil can take up to 6 months to work their magic (i.e., lime or sulphur). Cornell University Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are hosting fall pH clinics starting Sept. 15th.
clippings, etc., routinely added may require an addition of lime to meet the minimal neutral pH. pH also affects what nutrients the plant can take up in its roots. When pH is high (over 7.0) iron, manganese, copper and zinc in the soil become unavailable to plants. Conversely, when pH is low (below 6.0) calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium become unavailable. The nutrient may still be in the soil, however it is bound up in the soil due to the pH and the
What do you wish? A father was telling his little girl what his own childhood was like. He said, “We used to skate outside on a frozen pond for hours and hours until way after dark. And I had a swing made from a tire and it hung from a tree in our front yard and I’d swing and sing in my loudest voice. And we rode our pony that was named Silver all around the farm and down to the pond. And in the summertime, we picked wild raspberries and ate them until we thought we would pop.” The little girl was so wide-eyed, taking in all of these fun times her father had as a little boy. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!” Do you ever wish you’d known someone sooner? Or, talked with a friend more often? Or, taken time out to enjoy life more? Do you ever wish you’d had more fun with your children? Or, taken life less seriously and played more often? Get to know the people around you sooner--like today. Go visit your father like you’ve been meaning to. Call that school teacher who meant so much to you and thank her. As you do, you make a positive life at work and home, not just a living.

As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising
