How To Get More Out Of Your Tax Refund Income tax season is a happy time for many people. Those who anticipate a considerable refund on their taxes look forward to having extra money; some individuals even plan to finance big-ticket purchases entirely with

Smart money management can turn a refund check into a nice nest egg or stretch dollars to make the most of this windfall of cash. The following moneymanagement tips can help anyone develop strong saving and spending habits that can pay dividends for years to come. Get Organized When looking to make the most of your tax refund, start by organizing your financial documents and getting a grasp on your spending and saving behaviors. Examine your income-to-

finances, take inventory of any high-interest loans, including credit card bills. It will save you more money in the long run to pay off this type of debt as soon as possible. The earlier such debts are eradicated, the less you will ultimately pay in interest. What’s more, paying off debt helps establish a better credit record and score, which can make you eligible for lower interest rates in the future. Using a refund to eliminate debt is more beneficial than simply letting the refund sit in the bank, where it’s likely to accrue less interest each month than the

Each tax situation is different and not everyone will receive a refund. In a 2013 H&R Block study of tax returns by people who did their own taxes, nearly half had differences, and approximately 40% of people with differences were entitled to a larger refund. OBTP#B13696 ©2013 HRB Tax Group, Inc.

interest that accrues on your credit accounts with outstanding balances. Investigate Savings Programs It is estimated that customers who don’t have an account at a bank or credit union spend, on average, more than $800 at checkcashing businesses each year. Opening up an account with a credit union or bank will immediately save you money on check-cashing fees. Speaking with a banking representative can also provide information about various programs that will enable you to save your tax refund and earn money on it through interest accumulation. In the National Retail Federation’s annual Tax Returns Study, 40.2 percent of respondents said they planned to stash some of their refund in savings in 2013. While traditional savings or checking accounts may offer nominal interest rates, longer-term certificate of deposits or money market accounts may yield more interest. Talk To An Investment Specialist Your income tax refund may be just what you need to start investing. A 2012 study by TD Ameritrade indicated 63% of respondents said they plan to save or invest at least part of the money they get back on their taxes. A financial planner or stock broker can guide you through potential investments that carry the right portfolio and level of risk for your needs. If you prefer to do the work yourself, many investment companies have user-friendly web sites where account holders can manage their own investments and monitor the daily performance of those investments. With the right investment, you can turn your refund into a substantial amount of money over the course of several years.

Stretching tax refund dollars means making smart choices regarding money management. Rather than splurging tax returns on big-ticket items, use your refund to grow your savings, begin an investment portfolio or pay down debt.

Charitable Donations And Tax Deductions People make charitable donations for various reasons. Some are motivated by a desire to give back to their communities, while others may be inspired by a particular cause whether that cause is based down the street or across the globe. Network for Good, an organization that helps nonprofits connect with prospective donors, says 89% of American households give to charity. Gifts average 3.2% of household income, or roughly $1,620 annually, and oftentimes such donations are tax deductible. The United States Internal Revenue Service is the organization tasked with overseeing taxrelated issues. In-depth informa-tion regarding applicable tax deductions can be found on their respective web site, Individuals also consult with a qualified accountant should they have any questions regarding charitable donations and deductions. In addition, there are some guidelines for donors to follow when making donations and claiming tax deductions. *Recognize that only charitable contributions

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS- INSTEAD OF A HEALTH CLUB For those of you considering joining a health club but are worried that you may not make full use of your membership, I’d like to suggest something that has worked great for me. Take adult education exercise classes at your local high school. Not only are the classes very affordable, but they are also short-term (810 weeks), which is much easier to commit to than a year’s membership at a club. Whenever I belonged to a gym, I wouldn’t go because I could always go “tomorrow.” However, if I miss an adult education class, there is no “makeup.” Hence, I’m much more inclined to go! I have taken several different classes from dancing to yoga, and I have always found the environment to be very encouraging and fun. If I get bored of one, I just sign up for another the next semester. Look at the policy listed in the front or back of the catalog. Some of these schools offer a discount if you join with a friend. These programs usually also offer a lot of great, fun classes, including ones about saving money and finances! -Jodi

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS SIMPLE HAIR CONDITIONER I have very thick, wavy hair and one day I was out of conditioner. No conditioner meant I couldn’t get a comb or brush through my hair. I grabbed the closest thing, which was baby oil. I put a few drops on my hands and rubbed it through my hair. Now, that’s all I use! I’m serious. The oil makes my hair just a little bit slippery and that’s all I need. I haven’t used conditioner now for over a year. Try it! I towel dry first, then put a few drops on my hands, rub together, and “comb” through my hair with my fingers. Then I go through my hair with a wide tooth comb. It’s easy! -D.

The Basics Of Fly Fishing By Craig W. Armstrong Most people have been fishing at one time or another. Maybe as a child, maybe as an unwilling spouse or maybe as an enthusiast. But spin or bait

fishing and fly fishing are two different things, with the latter being an art in itself. One difference between the two types of fishing is where the weight is located. In bait fishing,

Hiding In Plain Sight By Craig W. Armstrong You see it on men, women, kids and lizards. What is it? It’s camouflage. fashion statement, but how much do you really know about camouflage? The word “camouflage” comes from the French word “camoufler,” which means to blind or veil. Essentially camouflage amounts to hiding in plain sight. Man’s use of camouflage dates back to the 14th century. That’s when the technique was practiced by the masters of stealth...the ninjas! They didn’t dress in green and brown, though. They utilized black to conceal themselves in the darkness. The military’s use of camouflage came about in part due to the advancements in firearms. In 1857, the British army suffered vast causalities because the red tunics they wore made them targets that were easier to hit from long distances with more accurate firearms. Bright and bold military uniforms were intended to intimidate, foster a team environment and, in some cases, make soldiers easier to indentify. This, as the British found out, was not

wise and they dyed their tunics khaki. The military uses camouflage for survival and so do the ones who invented it...animals. Animals use camouflage in a couple of different ways to conceal themselves. First is general resemblance. This is what most people think of as camouflage. It involves blending into the natural environment. There is also special resemblance, which uses not only color but shape and behavior to blend into the environment. Take the walking stick, for example. It looks and acts more like a stick than an insect. Another form of camouflage is called motion dazzle. This technique is all about confusing the eye. The Navy called it “razzle dazzle” and painted lines and patterns on ships to break up the actual lines of the ships. This confused the eye and made the ships harder to focus on in the vast sea. Breaking up the shape of an object is an im-

portant part of camouflage. Two techniques that use this principle are disruptive coloration and counter shading. Disruptive coloration relies on a pattern that does not follow the body shape or outline of the animal. With counter shading, an animal’s body is darker on the top and lighter on the bottom, which creates a lack of depth and makes the animal more 2D than 3D. What started as a tool for survival has become a hunter’s friend and a teen’s fashion choice. Camoflage provides cover for hunters while they stalk their game and can be belted and accessorized for a night on the town. The next time you put on some camo for function or fun, take a moment to thank Mother Nature for all her hard work in perfecting it.

the weight, which carries your cast, comes from the lure. Because the flies in fly fishing are so light, the weight has to come from the line. These nearly weightless flies are made to mimic different things. For example, some imitate insects, others appear as bait fish and some look nothing like anything you would find in nature. These lures can be made to either float or sink. Many fly fishermen like to tie their own flies, and this is done by fastening hair, feathers, fur and other material to a hook. However, if you buy your flies, there are several groups that you should know. Dry flies are designed to look like adult insects that float on top of the water. Midges represent that same insect’s midlife and nymphs imitate their larval stage. Streamers are supposed to fool fish into thinking they are baitfish, such as crawdads. Terrestrials imitate a mammal or insect that spends their time on land but gets in the water from time to time. Today’s rods for fly fishing are state of the art and are usually constructed of fiberglass. The cost for these specialized rods range from $70 to several hundred dollars. If you are new to the sport, do some research before you make your purchase. The reels used for fly fishing are specialized, too. Not every fly fishing rod matches every fly fishing reel. The same goes for line. The line used is designed to go with specific reels, which in turn, go with specific rods. Again, do your homework before you buy. The best way to learn about fly fishing is from someone who already does it. Fly fishing might seem difficult, but it’s not. Some people fear it because a special way of casting is involved. If you can swing your arms, then you can cast a fly fishing line. Once you learn this form of fishing, you may learn to love it. Who knows. One day, you may be the one dragging someone along on a fly fishing adventure.

Whether it’s an eye-catching necklace, a set of faceframing glasses or a hat to add an air of mystery, the key to a great accessory is finding pieces that work in concert. Robindira Unsworth’s soft and romantic Blush Collection features handcrafted pendant necklaces that possess an heirloom quality. Smoky quartz, white topaz, morganite, silver, and gold foil doublets complemented by a palette of luminescent tones add just the right amount of shimmer to any look. Earthy tones help them transition well from the heat of the summer to the cool, crisp days of autumn. British-born, New York transplant Richard Mewha founded Bevel, an artisanal eyewear company that provides looks worn by some of the most celebrated men and women around the world. Mewha believes eyewear is essential to personal style and reflects this with a focus on comfort, fit, flattering colors, and great shapes. These elements blend together to create a timeless accessory to complete any look.

OUTDOOR GARDEN ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO NOW By: Lyn Chimera, Master Gardener, Cornell University Cooperative Extension The glaciers are receding and it looks like spring will finally arrive. We’ve all been waiting for this, but keep in mind, it’s only mid-March and there’s a lot of time before planting. The biggest mistake gardeners make is doing too much too soon. The following are some tips for mid-March. -If your soil is still soft and wet don’t be tempted to work in the garden or walk on the lawn. If you leave a footprint, the soil is too wet and you will compact it. So why is compaction a problem? Soft soil is easily compressed which forces out the spaces between soil particles that roots need to grow and water needs to penetrate the soil. Reaching gardens through a path or walkway is a good solution. -There is no way of telling how soon the soil will warm up. It all depends on the weather. Soil should be 50 degrees before you start planting and that could take a while after this winter. -Personally, I’m not removing any winter mulch, pine boughs or protective shrub coats until the overnight temps are consistently well above freezing. Studies show that seeds started too early or plants planted when the soil is too cold (below 50) do not do as well. As for the protective mulch; keeping it on protects the soil around those plants and prevents the soil from thawing out too quickly and then possibly re-freezing which causes heaving. -One thing this weather is perfect for is pruning. •Cut back grasses left up over the winter being careful not to damage new shoots coming up. •Trim back perennials or other dead plant material. It’s not going to hurt anything to leave these up if the soil is still soft. Last year’s spent foliage actually helps protect the crown from fluctuating temperatures. •Prune any shrubs and trees that don’t blossom in the spring. It is ideal to prune before the new buds break out and start growing. Remove dead or damaged branches first then assess what further pruning might be warranted. •If you would like a pruning consult just contact me. I can show you how to prune properly so you can do it yourself in the future. •If you haven’t cleaned and sharpened your tools since last season, now is the time. While we may not be able to plant yet, we can get a few chores done to get a step or two closer. fb

The automotive industry has long been a male-dominated industry. Things could begin to shift after the actions taken by one major automaker. In late 2013, Mary Barra was named the chief executive officer for General Motors. Barra, who has worked for GM in various capacities for the past 33 years, becomes the first woman ever to lead a major automaker. Barra began working at GM in the Pontiac Motor Division when she was 18 as a means to pay for college tuition. Most recently she was the executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain for GM. According to GM, Barra was picked for her wealth of knowledge and managerial skills, not for political correctness.

What’s your strength? During World War II, Colvin Williams was walking behind a tank patrolling France. The tank hit a mine, exploded and permanently blinded Williams. But that didn’t stop Williams from pursuing his goal of becoming a minister and counselor. He went on to graduate from college with honors. He said he thought his blindness was actually an asset in his career. “I can never judge by appearances,” he said. “I can always give a person a second chance. My blindness keeps me from cutting myself off from a person because of the way he looks.” Williams went on to say, “I want to be the kind of person to whom anyone can come and feel secure, to express [her]self.” You’ve got to love Williams’ positive attitude! Blinded, by no fault of his own, and he turns a potential weakness into a powerful strength. What potential weakness do you face right now? I wonder what Williams would say about your weakness if it was his? Live Positive like Williams and transform your weakness into a strength. A public service message brought to you by

Moneysaver Advertising REMAINING PHEASANTS RELEASED Seventy-one ringnecks become “nest egg” for Franklin County Wild Pheasant Recovery Area. Nine more wild pheasants captured recently on a Native American reservation in Montana have been released in Franklin County in hopes a self-sustaining wild pheasant population will take hold there. Game Commission staff, along with members of the organization Pheasants Forever, released the birds March 13 at a farm near Mercersburg in the Franklin County Wild Pheasant Recovery Area (WPRA). The release was the second in a week within the Franklin County WPRA. On March 9, 58 Montana ringnecks and four that were born wild in Pennsylvania were released. The initial release marked the first time the Franklin County WPRA received wild pheasants. Although the Franklin County WPRA was established in 2011 and was slated to receive its first pheasants in 2012, Pennsylvania had been unable in recent years to obtain wild pheasants for release into any of its four WPRAs. A partnership formed this year between the Game Commission, Pheasants Forever and the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana ended the drought and led to the first releases of wild pheasants in Pennsylvania in three years. Following the releases, 71 wild pheasants have been placed into the Franklin County WPRA. Sen. Richard Alloway II, R-Chambersburg, said he’s hopeful the releases provide a springboard for wild pheasant recovery in southcentral Pennsylvania. “The wild pheasant population has been a serious concern for sportsmen and conservationists alike,” said Alloway, who chairs the state Senate Game and Fisheries Committee. “The Game Commission deserves a great deal of credit for taking this important step toward helping the population recover to sustainable levels.” Game Commission staff and Pheasants Forever members hope the releases might represent the first of many that result from the partnership with the Crow Indian Reservation. The Franklin County WPRA is located in the southwestern part of Franklin County and centers roughly on the borough of Mercersburg. U.S. Route 30 forms the WPRA’s northern border, and the WPRA runs south to the Mason-Dixon Line. With the releases into the Franklin County WPRA, all four of Pennsylvania’s WPRAs have received pheasants. Pheasants previously have been released into the Central Susquehanna WPRA, which is located in parts of Northumberland, Montour, Columbia and Lycoming counties; the Somerset WPRA in Somerset County; and the Hegins-Gratz Valley WPRA in Schuylkill and Dauphin counties. Only trapped-and-transferred wild pheasants are introduced into a WPRA, given their heightened chances for survival in the wild, compared to propagated birds. There is no open season for taking pheasants in any Wild Pheasant Recovery Area, and releases of propagated pheasants also are prohibited there. Training dogs and hunting small game other than woodchucks, waterfowl and crows are prohibited within a WPRA from the first Sunday in February to July 31. The Game Commission seeks the public’s help in making WPRAs more successful. Pheasant success within any WPRA relies on the availability of adequate nesting and wintering habitat, and privately held land accounts for most of the acreage within the WPRAs. Those who are interested in creating or enhancing pheasant habitat on land they own can contact the Game Commission’s WPRA biologist Colleen DeLong at 570-3800833, or contact their local Pheasants Forever chapter. The public also can help to monitor the success of WPRAs by calling the Game Commission if they see pheasants ñ especially hens or chicks - within a WPRA, or calling the phone number on leg bands of any dead pheasants they might find within a WPRA. People also are asked to leave pheasant nests within WPRAs undisturbed and to avoid mowing grassy or brushy habitat there. For more information on WPRAS, visit the Game Commission’s web site,, and select, “Hunting” under the “Hunt/Trap” tab, then select “Pheasant” under the “Small Game” header. Maps and other information on Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas are available. f

Though many people are familiar with more commonly diagnosed cancers like lung cancer or breast cancer, lesser known cancers can make the shock of a cancer diagnosis that much more puzzling. Being diagnosed with a less common cancer can compound the tendency for men and women facing a cancer diagnosis to ask themselves, “Why me?” But understanding lesserknown cancers can make it easier for people to grasp what they need to do to beat the disease. Multiple myeloma is a somewhat uncommon cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society notes that, in the United States, a person’s risk of getting multiple myeloma is 1 in 149, while according to Myeloma Canada, the disease is responsible for roughly 1.3 percent of all new cancer cases in that country. Though multiple myeloma may

What is multiple myeloma? Multiple myeloma is a cancer formed by malignant plasma cells. Mainly found in the bone marrow, normal plasma cells are a key component of the body’s immune system, producing the antibodies that help the body attack and kill germs. When a person has multiple myeloma, these plasma cells begin to multiply within the bone marrow at an unhealthy rate. As they multiply, these plasma cells release more and more of an antibody called immunoglobulin into the bones and blood. As this excessive protein accumulates in the body, organ damage can result. Kidney damage and even kidney failure may result as the myeloma cells produce more and more immunoglobulin. Another side effect of multiple myeloma is the weakening of bones. As noted, plasma cells are necessary to protect the body from infection. But as multiple myeloma plasma cells continue to multiply, they begin to interfere with cells that keep bones strong. The multiple myeloma cells start to crowd out normal plasma cells, and as they do so they release chemicals that dissolve areas of bone. That’s because the multiple myeloma cells send messages to the osteoclasts, cells responsible for breaking down old bone, to speed up the process of dissolving the bones. However, multiple myeloma cells are not sending messages to the osteoblasts, which are the cells that lay down new bone, to create new bone. So bones are dissolving without any new bone to replace them, leaving multiple myeloma patients susceptible to bone fractures. What causes multiple myeloma? The cause of multiple myeloma remains a mystery. However, the ACS notes that certain risk factors can increase a person’s chance of being diagnosed with multiple myeloma. *Age: Less than 1 percent of multiple myeloma diagnoses are in people under the age of 35, and the majority of diagnoses are in people who are at least 65 years old. *Gender: Men have a slightly higher risk of being diagnosed.
