AUCTION NOTICE As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. MCKEAN COUNTY LIVESTOCK CLUB On April 6 the McKean County LiveStock Club met at Fox’s Pizza in Smethport, Pa. There were two guests, Marcia Lamar & Tiffany Tanner and six members. The American Pledge was done by Tucker Smith, and the 4-H Pledge was done by John Post. The members talked about the place they received at their window display, introduced themselves and told what project and office they were holding. The club had a new member join, his name is Tucker Smith. The members talked about doing a fundraiser and Kim will bring all the information for them at the next meeting so they can see the break down of the cost and profit. The members talked about doing different items for the hero bags. Members picked what they would like to be responsible for to make and to get others to help with some items. John Post made the motion to adjourn the meeting, and Morgan Corle seconded it. The next meeting date is May 4 at 2:00 at the Lamphier Cemetery in Eldred, Pa. fb

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS THE “EXCHANGE” PARTY Last week I attended an “exchange” party. We all brought things that didn’t fit or we didn’t care for anymore like books, CDs, DVDs, jewelry, shoes, etc. We each brought a potluck dish. We ate, talked, enjoyed each other, and then we “shopped.” I now am the proud owner of a new beautiful bathrobe, a brand

new Coach purse, etc. Everyone went home full and happy with their new things. The only cost was for the food we made. It wasn’t fancy, but it was wonderful. We no longer have to deal with garage sale set up, etc. The things that no one wanted went to charity. CLM EASY READER Do you like eBooks but

GAME COMMISSION PREPARES FOR 2014 CONTROLLED BURNS ON SGL 176 Burns to preserve unique barrens habitat. The Pennsylvania Game Commission plans to resume controlled burns on the Scotia Barrens on State Game Lands 176 in Patton, Ferguson and Halfmoon townships, Centre County, to improve habitat conditions within this unique ecosystem. Depending on conditions, the Game Commission plans to burn up to five units totaling 340 acres. The potential burn window is approximately April 7 to May 24. The purpose is to restore the pitch pine/scrub oak ecosystem on the Scotia Barrens. Controlled burns are used by the Game Commission on game lands statewide to improve plant and wildlife habitats, and reduce the chance of wildfire. Game Commission Bureau of Wildlife Habitat Management director William Capouillez noted that residents might see or smell smoke emerging from the Scotia Barrens during the burning. “People become upset when there is smoke in the air if they don’t know the reason for the fire,” Capouillez said. “That’s why we’re trying to get the word out about controlled burning. If we carefully plan and conduct a burn when weather conditions favor smoke dispersal, this reduces smoke-related problems. Dealing with a little bit of smoke now is infinitely better than dealing with a wildfire later.” Local media contacts will be made within 24 to 48 hours of potential burn days to keep local residents informed. State Game Lands 176 currently contains 6,231 acres in Ferguson, Half Moon and Patton townships. f

SCENTED BATH SALTS I work in a store that sells scented bath salts. They can be $10 for a 16-ounce bottle unless you make your own. Get some coarse salt, a fragrance oil, a clear container, and a bowl. Pour the salt into the bowl and add the oil. Stir well. Transfer contents to clear container, and you’ve got some nice bath salts. And you didn’t have to spend much at all! Monica

Even if you pick up pieces in a variety of patterns, since they are all the same color, it won’t matter and your guests might even enjoy the bit of variety in accents. S. USE LOTS OF BATTERIES? Years ago, I bought a 15-minute battery charger with four batteries that charged in 15 minutes. I have never needed to replace them. They save me a fortune because I listen to books on CD while I walk, and the CD player uses a lot of batteries. In fact, this is one of the best presents I give to male or female friends. By the way, the battery holds a long charge. I save money, the environment, and time because I don’t constantly have to run and get batteries. CS

GOOD BYE SNOW, HELLO TISSUES! IT’S ALLERGY SEASON Wellsville, NY (April 3, 2014)- The conclusion of the recent “endless winter” is bittersweet for the many people who suffer with seasonal allergies. Since some of the most common allergy triggers - pollen, ragweed, grass - are waiting just outside the door, gardening, yard work and other springtime activities often leads to itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and congestion. The key to living with allergies is good management. “While allergies can occur all year long, for many people, spring is when allergies go into high gear,” explained Dr. Keith Gembusia, a family practitioner who sees patients at the Jones Memorial Medical Practices office in Belvidere. “This year, winter has been hanging on and once the temperatures finally warm up, we can expect more pollen in the air as everything starts budding and blooming at the same time.” But it’s not all doom and gloom, allergy sufferers! Dr. Gembusia has some tips to help control and manage your allergies and get your share of the sunshine. To reduce the inflammation caused by pollen and other allergens, Dr. Gembusia recommends starting over-thecounter antihistamines early in the season. “If you start early and keep the inflammation quiet, you may avoid a flare-up of symptoms, which is what causes the misery of allergies,” he said. The main types of over-the-counter (OTC) medications used to help control seasonal allergies include topical nasal sprays, inhaled corticosteroids, oral antihistamines and decongestants. For mild seasonal allergies, nasal sprays, inhalants and oral antihistamines can effectively manage symptoms. “Despite rumors you may have heard, antihistamines are not addictive, but they can lose effectiveness if used over a few months,” he said. “Switching brands periodically is an excellent way of ensuring that your medication is doing its best.” If your nose is still congested after taking the antihistamine, Dr. Gembusia recommends a nasal rinse or a decongestant. “However, decongestants are usually used for cold symptoms and are not meant to be used long-term,” he added, noting that your healthcare provider may also prescribe a nasal spray. Other prescription options include antihistamines, leukotriene modifiers, and antihistamine eye drops. “The bottom line,” said Dr. Gembusia, “is that you don’t have to be miserable during allergy season if you work with your provider and come up with a plan.” If the OTC and prescription medicines don’t relieve your seasonal allergies - or if you have symptoms more than three months a year - allergy shots might be the answer. “Immunotherapy involves getting shots that contain a small amount of whatever is causing the allergic reaction,” explained Dr. Gembusia. “At first, you get a shot once or twice a week; then it’s once or twice a month.” Eventually, your immune system is desensitized to that allergen and you only need shots every two to five years. Find out more by talking to your healthcare provider. f

LIVE STREAM CAPTURES FOOTAGE OF EAGLETS HATCHING One more egg being incubated in Pittsburgh nest.

Pennsylvania’s most famed bald-eagle nest has two new stars. The first of what could be three eaglets hatched Friday inside a Pittsburgh nest as the magical moment was captured by a camera and live streamed to viewers online. Then on Sunday, a second egg hatched, bringing the count at the nest to two adults, two eaglets and one egg. That egg is due to hatch in the coming days. Typically, bald-eagle eggs follow a 35-day incubation period, meaning the first of the eggs to hatch at the Pittsburgh nest came a little later than expected, while the second hatched a little early. The remaining egg was laid on Feb. 25, which would place it on schedule to hatch April 2. Plans continue to live stream footage from the nest around the clock through the nesting attempt taking place along the Monongahela River in the Hays section of Pittsburgh. The live stream can be viewed on the home page of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s web site, www.pgc.state.pa.us Scroll down the page and click the “play” icon to view. The live stream offers a rare, real-time look at nature in action. The live stream, a joint effort between the Game Commission and PixController Inc., launched in late December and has been open to 24-hour viewing for the past several weeks. There have been some interesting moments along the way. On Feb. 26, for instance, a raccoon paid a late-night visit to the nest, causing the nesting female to pop up to defend her eggs, flapping her wings and scaring the raccoon off. Just more than a month later, the two hatchings share the rank of the most significant highlight to date. While nest-watchers always are welcome online, those venturing afield for a firsthand look at nesting bald eagles are reminded to keep their distance. While the bald eagle no longer is listed as an endangered or threatened species in Pennsylvania, it continues to be protected by federal law, which among other things establishes a buffer to ensure people stay at least 660 feet from a nest. Some eagles are more tolerant than others when it comes to human activity. But any action that could flush an adult eagle from the nest is a threat to successful hatching of

Keeping your distance is one way to increase the chances of nest success. Guidelines on how to more safely view bald eagle nests are available on the “Bald Eagle Watching in Pennsylvania” page under the “Wildlife” and “Watchable Wildlife” tabs at the Game Commission’s home page. Media inquiries regarding the Hays bald eagles or the live stream of their nesting attempt can be directed to the Game Commission’s Southwest Region Office in Bolivar at 724-238-9523, or to the agency’s Harrisburg headquarters at 717-705-6541. The bald-eagle nest live stream is the first of two live streams soon to be available to view at the Game Commission’s website. A camera recently was installed at a Northampton County site where osprey have nested for several years. Game Commission officials believe an osprey nesting attempt, like that of the Hays eagles, holds the potential for many fascinating moments that, with any luck, would include the hatching and fledging of young. f OTTO-ELDRED ELEMENTARY BREAKFAST/LUNCH MENU April 16, 2014 - April 22, 2014 Wed.
