WHAT TYPES OF OUTDOOR RECREATION ARE MOST IMPORTANT? Pennsylvanians can weigh in by taking online survey. Pennsylvania’s hunters, trappers, sport shooters and wildlife enthusiasts have the opportunity to make their opinions known. An online survey, the results of which will be considered as part of an update to the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, remains open and can be completed in minutes. Questions on hunting, conservation programs, wildlife habitat and land acquisitions are included on the survey. State agencies are working with experts across Pennsylvania to update the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, which will help to guide future recreation investments, policies and facilities through 2018. A new plan is required every five years in order for Pennsylvania to qualify for federal Land and Water Conservation funding. Citizen feedback is a component that’s important in building the plan’s goals. The online survey is one of three surveys that will be considered as part of Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation plan update. A scientific survey was conducted earlier this year, and a survey of recreation providers also is being developed. The online survey is completely confidential and can be accessed at The survey remains open until May 16. After feedback from all three surveys is analyzed, a draft plan will be written in late summer and will be available for review and comment on the plan’s website. Feedback sessions will allow citizens, providers and interested stakeholders to give their input before a final document is presented to the National Park Service later this year. Learn more at f

CHANGES TO FALL TURKEY SEASONS ADOPTED Season lengths altered in some WMUs. The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners gave final approval to fall turkey seasons for 2014 and spring gobbler dates for 2015. Decreasing populations in WMUs 3A, 3B and 3C prompted the adoption of a two-week fall turkey season in those WMUs. Previously, there had been a three-week season there. The three-day Thanksgiving season segment will continue in WMUs 3A, 3B and 3C despite the one-week decrease in the earlier segment. Also, 2014 marks the final year of the hen harvest rate and survival rate study. So those WMUs in the study area will continue with the season lengths implemented last year. The board also opted to retain a three-day fall turkey season in WMU 5A, but shifted it from midweek to a Thursday-through-Saturday framework.

The fall season dates for 2014: WMU 1B, Nov. 1-8 and Nov. 27-29; WMU 2B (shotgun and bow only), Nov. 1-21, and Nov. 27-29; WMUs 1A, 2A, 2D, 2F, 2G, 2H, 3A, 3B and 3C, Nov. 1-15, and Nov. 27-29; WMUs 2C, 2E, 3D, 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D and 4E, Nov. 1-21, and Nov. 27-29; and WMU 5A, Nov. 6-8. WMUs 5B, 5C and 5D will remain closed for the fall seasons. For the 2015 spring gobbler season, which will run from May 2-30, the board continued the change in legal hunting hours to reflect the following: from May 2-16, legal shooting hours will be one-half hour before sunrise until noon timeframe; and from May 18-30, hunters may hunt all day, from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. The board adopted the one-day Spring Gobbler Youth Hunt on April 25, 2015, which will run from one-half hour before sunrise until noon. All junior license holders and Mentored Youth Hunting Program permit holders can participate in this special one-day hunt, as well as the other spring season dates. f

Controlled burns on the Scotia Barrens, part of State Game Lands 176 in Centre County, are planned to resume. Controlled burns are used by the Pennsylvania Game Commission on game lands statewide to improve plant and wildlife habitats, and reduce the chance of wildfire. Burns are weather-dependant and, as such, can’t be scheduled far in advance. When burning on State Game Lands 176, the Game Commission tries to notify local media as soon as practical. The tracts to be burned beginning Monday comprise at least 85 acres and are known as Units 9 and 12. Burns were conducted on portions of those same units last week. There is a chance a burn also will be conducted this week on Unit 10. This is the third time in recent weeks conditions have allowed crews to conduct burns. Depending on conditions, the Game Commission this year plans to burn up to five units totaling 340 acres on State Game Lands 176. The potential burn window runs approximately until May 24. The purpose of the burns is to restore the pitch pine/scrub oak ecosystem on the Scotia Barrens. Residents might see or smell smoke emerging from the Scotia Barrens during the burning. State Game Lands 176 currently contains 6,231 acres in Ferguson, Half Moon and Patton townships. f

According to hunters there aren’t enough deer, according to gardeners there are too many. Obviously, I fall on the gardener side of this debate. Finding deer tracks in the garden and munched on plants here and there are an affront to my hard work. I am not greedy or selfish; my garden is surrounded by corn, oat and hay fields, isn’t that smorgasbord enough for them? Apparently, I am not the only gardener in Allegany County wanting relief from deer damage. There are many options being touted as the best way to make deer stay out of your garden: putrefied egg solutions, loud noises and lights, predator urine, human hair, hanging bars of soap, and a garden guard dog. While some of these may work, they may have to be reapplied or changed over time as the deer become accustomed to them and they just won’t work all of the time. If you really want a permanent solution, you need to build a fence. Consider deer physiology and the way they think before starting to build any deer exclusion fence. •Deer are grazers and when they get into your garden they nibble here and there and can do a lot of damage to numerous plants in a short period of time. •They are able to jump with great agility and height; deer can jump on average 8’ high and in certain situations can clear 10’. •Deer have a nose that smells out tasty treats much better than humans.

Obituaries Visit Our Web Site At WWW.MONEYSAVERADVERTISING.COM For Complete Obituaries. PORT ALLEGANY, PA- Mark A. Chelgreen, 24, passed away Wednesday (May 7, 2014) in his residence in Wilkes Barre, PA.

•As a prey animal; they are always alert and cautious around new things in their environment. •Building a 4’ fence in a large garden is NOT going to keep out deer. That being said, if you have an existing 4’ or 5’ fence, adding a similar additional fence approximately four feet away has good effect, as deer don’t want to clear both fences with their poor depth perception. •However, most fences for serious deer exclusion start at 7’ and go up. •Tall solid privacy fences may be an option as deer are less inclined to try to jump into an area they cannot see into, this follows their prey behavior. Fencing Options: Plastic Mesh- If you don’t have heavy deer pressure, a mesh fence may work well. Mesh usually comes in rolls and is attached to pxosts with zip-ties every 56’. I have had personal experience with using mesh snow fence as a four foot barrier around a large garden. Initially, the deer are cautious around the new structure and avoid it. As they become braver during the growing season, I have had to use a putrefied egg solution around the exterior to keep them from entering the garden. This mixture is effective; however, you must reapply it after every rain event. If you miss a time and the deer enter your garden and find out what they have been missing, you may have lost the battle! Things to consider about plastic mesh fencing: •Some of the mesh products for sale are very thin and deer that are panicked may inadvertently run through the fencing causing major damage. •The mesh tends to droop if you do not have the posts close together, if you try to reduce your number of posts to save money, you will have a very droopy fence that isn’t much use. •Sometimes the zip-ties slide down the fence posts taking the mesh fence with it. •The mesh will become more brittle each year until breaks in the fence are a real problem. (Even if you take it down each fall and store it for the winter.) •Some neighbors may not like the look of orange snow fence; you can try the black or green mesh fencing instead. Wire- High-tensile wire is a viable option that can be started with the first strand 6 inches from the ground and then spacing the wire 6-12 inches up to 10 feet, depending on your deer pressure. Fence posts between the wire can be spaced 25-50 feet apart. •Square mesh wire fencing can also be an effective deterrent; space 10’ tall posts approximately 20 feet apart for a good sturdy fence. Tall wire mesh is very effective, but can also be costly. Things to consider about wire fencing: •Posts must be driven deeper into the ground than electric or plastic mesh to be able to withstand the force of the high-tensile wires. •Have you ever seen a fence that a deer has run into at full speed? If the posts are close enough together it should withstand this abuse, if you spread them out to save money the wire mesh fencing will look warped after a round with a deer and will need to be repaired. Electric- If you live in a neighborhood overpopulated with deer you may need to add an electrified section to your fencing to really grab their attention. Try a single strand of electrified wire 2 - 3’ from the ground, this should stop the deer from jumping your existing fence. If your populations are too large, you may need to use multiple strands of electrified wire 1’ apart to really get your point across. There are solar electric fence options that will work like a charm if your garden is beyond your conventional electric source. You can also use electric as the sole fencing option without an existing fence. This would require multiple strands at varying levels. You can tie pieces of aluminum foil around the electric lines and bait it with peanut butter. This will give the deer a jolt that will help them associate pain with your garden and add a higher level of deterrent. Want to try a “wireless electric fence?” This seems to be the newest alternative to keeping deer out of gardens. It uses

small posts that are baited with floral lures that when licked by deer give them a shock of electric. They run on batteries. I haven’t tried them and a quick search of the internet did not come up with research-based results, but you might give it a try if everything else short of an 8’ foot fence hasn’t worked (don’t forget to let the rest of us know how it works). Things to consider with electric fences: •Be very careful when installing electric fence in areas where there are children. •You will need an electrical power source to power your fence or a solar powered one. •The fence must be left on at all times; just turning it on periodically won’t work. If the deer figure out the electric fencer doesn’t work they will begin eating your garden and keep coming back. •Check it regularly, if a deer has been “bitten” by the fence, it will startle the animal. In its panic, it may continue to run through the garden dragging the fence from its insulators and poles. You would think it would be easy to find bright yellow insulators, but in deep grass it is a challenge. •Always unplug the fence before maintenance; getting a charge from a heavy duty electric fence can really ruin your day. Mix and Match- Maybe the deer are only a problem on one side of your garden and the 4’ fence is working on the other side. Putting a few lines of electric on the side the deer are accessing may do the trick. You may have to experiment a little to see what works best in your area depending upon deer pressure. Under the heaviest pressure, you may have to add a putrefied egg solution along with a fence to keep deer at bay. Also, don’t be afraid to add things like plants that deer don’t like to eat. Put these around the exterior of your fencing to make the deer think that only unpalatable plants are in the garden. These can include poppies, Echinacea, aster, lupine, daisies, rhubarb, peony, bleeding heart, lavender, Russian sage, snap dragon, and foxglove to name a few. This will make your garden fence look beautiful, attract pollinators, and hopefully help trick the deer into staying away. A little time, the right fence and experimentation will yield some great results that will allow you to see the beauty in your deer population and not just the havoc they can wreak. When friends come to visit and exclaim over your lush gardens you will be able to agree that it was all worth it in the long run. fb EVANGELICAL COVENANT CHURCH 67 Church Street, Port Allegany, PA Pastor: J.T.
