D CURRICULUM BASE S WATER WORKSHOP FOR GRADES 7 & 8!

DESIGNED BY TEACHERS: TIN ROOF’S GUSH PROGRAM EXPLORES LOCAL WATER ISSUES RELATED TO QUARRIES, LANDFILLS AND DEVELOPMENTS

Contextualizing Local Water Issues in the Curriculum!

Water is in the news these days, right in your own backyard. Quarries, landfills and developments can all have serious impacts on water sources and that’s often why these issues are being talked about. Tin Roof’s GUSH program explores these issues with students in a fun, exciting, hands-on, curriculum-based environment. Curriculum links include Water Systems, Pure Substances & Mixtures, Quantity Relationships, Fluids, Interactions Within Ecosystems, & Developing Skills of Inquiry, Design & Communication AND MORE!

Quarries

Aggregate is a resource we all rely on in many ways. Schools, hospitals, roads and sidewalks, all of these things rely on aggregate for their construction. Yet often it seems that quarries are the last thing that many communities want nearby. GUSH helps students understand why the location and scale of quarries is such a contentious issue. Together with Tin Roof’s instructors, students build a model quarry right in their classroom while witnessing first hand the impacts of digging below the water table on wells, streams & rivers nearby. Students also analyze soil samples, comparing top grade farmland soils with lesser grades.

Landfills

We all produce garbage and it certainly needs to go somewhere. But landfills aren’t anyone’s favourite neighbour next door! Ti n R o o f ’ s G U S H p r o g r a m engages students to understand threats to water from landfills. Students interact with water contaminants hands-on (trust us, it’s safe!) while exploring the roles they can play themselves in diverting hazardous wastes from landfills. Students also create a simulated oil spill right in their classroom to discover the impacts on wildlife and just how hard it is to get a variety of contaminants out of water!

Developments

We all need a place to live and many of our homes rest on land that was once a farm, forest or field. Yet again, it’s an issue with water concerns at the heart of it because developments can change water flows and water quality. Through GUSH, students learn, handson, the methods used by governments and conservation authorities, which help people decide where to (and where not to) put new subdivisions, malls and schools. In their classroom and school yard, GUSH engages students to become land surveyors and dirt experts, analyzing soil types for their water absorption and runoff rates. Together, we drill down toward a better understanding of water issues related to developments!
