Artist Statement My centrepiece is a photo of a couple having lunch on a flight of stairs, illustrating the essence of “Live in Hong Kong ". For stylistic reasons, I have decided to use black and white photography to bring out greater meaning and depth in my work. I have also experimented with a new angle for my centrepiece. When I found them sitting on the stair, my eye level just saw their lower part of the bodies with their lunch boxes as there was a big board hid their faces. This image aroused my curiosity . Why they chose these back alley to have their lunch ?Who are they ?What are their identities? What are their jobs ?So I wanna to take this angle for my centrepiece. Before I chose this angle,I try to take two angles .One is can see their half face ,one is hidden their faces .Comparing to two angles ,I thought the latter one was better as audience can have more imaginary space, like one of the skills in Chinese painting called "Liu Bia "which like"visual absence" of colours .It creates some mental and emotional effect which was perhaps intended by the artist. Notably, a large board hides their faces as they eat their lunch. I hope the hidden faces will induce viewers to wonder what this couple is thinking as they eat. The board also gives the couple anonymity, keeping their identities a secret and for viewers to wonder about. Hong Kong appears to be a prosperous metropolis. But behind this facade of prosperity, there exists many people who need our help .I hope my photo can can represent Hong Kong workers' part of their lives. For the sake of draw audience attention and let them have strong feeling , the stark colors (Black and White )is easier to reflect Hong Kong workers'lives are beset with hardships and need us to face up the problem.
