What is a “good” detail? Every building is made up of many components. The way in which these components interact with each other plays an important role in the presentation of the building. On a distance all these components present themselves as a unified whole, but when we go into the detail we can see the real essence of a design. A good detail not only speaks for itself. It shows the viewer a section trough the design and the ideas behind it. The way in which connections are made, the way materials are treated give the viewer a glimpse at the design attitude of its creator. Showing a detail of a building can therefore speak for the entire design. It’s not merely a technical solution, or architectural composition. It’s the core of the design. The basis on which every element in the building finds common ground. A good detail unifies all aspects of the design and succeeds in presenting a design vision to its viewer.

Choice of building, The Chambers/De Kamers The Chambers in Amersfoort designed by Korteknie Stuhlmacher architects fits these criteria in our vision. The building succeeds in combining architectural presentation, construction, installations and budget in such a way that it seems like every element had all the attention it needed. The balance between design elements creates a detail which combines there visions into one presentation and therefor it’s possible for the detail to speak for the whole of the building. It shows the essence. The starting point of this essence lies at the function of the building. The Chambers is a cultural centre in which people of the local community can meet each other, organise activities and participate in organised events. It’s a corner stone of the neighbourhood. The building offers a wide range of spaces. The core is formed by the theaterroom, dinner-room, living room and foyer. The “Chambers” also refers to the different rooms of the building and the way in which they are stacked and recognisable in the design.

The design process The vision of the building consists of a expandable building principle. Rooms can be seen as containers or building brick of the design. The building therefore is able to grow or shrink in relation to it’s environment. This line of though found it’s way into the building after the two initiators of the project (Jos van Oord and Jan van der Meulen) asked Korteknie Stuhlmacher to restyle a number of prefabricated containers for there culture house.

The architects managed to convince Jos van Oord and Jan van der Meulen that designing your own containers or rooms would give more value to the project. And so a small scale idea became a true building design process. In the following three years the design fluctuated from small to large, but the central idea stayed upright. As mentioned earlier the vision of the building is based on expansibility. This combined with the low budget resulted in the choice of wood as the main construction material. Wood was also very effective in creating a warm and homelike atmosphere with little to no finishing and was therefore a perfect combination between architectural presentation and budget.

This basis was so strong that it stayed mostly the same trough out the entire design process. The building managed to get investments from the Dutch government because of it’s flexible building principle.

Wood is used in every part of the building. The wooden walls and floors combine construction, room for installations and architectural presentation in one element. Because of the wooden building system there’s a certain calm atmosphere in the building. The clearness of space and use of materials make the building very comprehendible for its users and therefore it’s likely for them to quickly connect with the building. The massive wooden elements are punctured by large windows which offer views to the direct environment and the other side of the building. The clearness of the design makes sure the visitor always has a orientation on where he is in the building.

Installation Most installations are integrated within the wooden floor elements. Bigger sections of ventilation are suspended under the floors and make a direct link with one of the main colours of the project; gray.

Location detail Many places of the building offer interesting details. The detail we picked offered us a chance to show the entire repertoire of the use of wood in the building. This is something we think of as great quality of the building seeing that the wooden system continued to work in all the different design versions in the three year design process. On the right there’s a picture of the detail location. The roof/window detail of the upper room and shows wood in a wide variety of building functions. fig 12

Wood as total solution The floor and wall system is responsible for the large presentation of unfinished wood in the interior spaces. Not only a matter of budget, but essentially this product is already a powerful atmosphere creator without any finishing. The floors are made up of Lignatur elements which are best described as wooden hollow core slabs which we already know in their concrete form. The walls consist of laminated wood layered to form a massive wall. Lenotec walls were used in this project. Both the floor and walls are therefore completely made from wood and secure structural stability. The connections are made with steel. This wooden structure forms the first layer of the building. The secondary layer consists of insulation, vapour barriers, wooden support beams and waterproofing membranes. This part of the detail uses proven existing ways of handling wood in a building to ensure quality. The roof and window flashing are made from aluminium and coated in gray. This gray colour is replicated in the Western red cedar facade. These modified wooden panels will turn gray with the passing of time. The Thermowood modification process was used for the Western Red Cedar cladding. The glazing frame is also made from wood and has been given a similar gray colour as the aluminium elements in the design.

Swiss floor system Lignatur forms the floors and ceilings of the building. The product is prefabricated and suspends distances of 7 to 9 meters. The floor elements are constructed from vertical and horizontal beams of whitewood which are glued together under high pressure. With the beams a rectangular hollow construction is formed which offers space for installation wiring. In the chambers the lighting elements are integrated in the Lignatur elements. The internal canals can be used in multiple ways. Energy or sound related insulation are two of the main options. With the acoustical version small holes or slots are carved out of the interior side of the element to enlarge the absorption area. All these different options are also integrated in the product. A choice of wood quality offers the architect a variety of price classes and finishing options for the wood. In the Chambers the industrial quality was used to give the walls a rigid character.

Finnforest Floors Massive wood walls varying from 85 to 169mm are used in the Chambers. The wood quality is similar to the one the Lignatur elements to give the rooms a homogeneous wooden look. The wall elements reach the building site completely prefabricated with openings for windows, doors and installations already fabricated. Fire resistant coating ensures the safety of the building. Lenotec walls consist of whitewooden beams which are glued together in a number of layers. Every layer is crossed to obtain the same effect as plywood. The wall elements come in sizes of 4,80 x 20 meters with a maximum thickness of 300mm. The possibilities of the product are enormous. In the Chambers for instance the fire extinguisher is placed in a carved out part of a wooden wall and the lighting tubes are placed in prefabricated slits in the wall. Other elements like stair railing can also be integrated in the wall. The Lentotec elements also find use as floor elements but lose there economical value when suspensions of more then 5 meters are required. In the Chambers suspensions of 9 meters occur and are therefore suspended with Lignatur. To have a consistent detailing all floors are therefore constructed with Lignatur instead of Lenotec.

Thermowood This Finnforest product increases the durability of the Western Red Cedar cladding by using a thermal modification process. The effect obtained by the process provides the wood with better dimensional stability, insulating qualities and weather resistance. The process uses no chemicals. Because of the modification process the wood systainabilityclass is improved to 2.
