Code: A dot represents that by this age/grade level the skill will normally be introduced and the student is working toward mastery. Unlike conventional programs, Montessori does not introduce a concept or skill once and assume that the class will move on to the next unit. Instead, students work in a carefully prepared educational environment in which those skills or concepts are available over the three year age span. They are introduced as soon as a student first shows interest or seems to be ready, but Montessori guides consciously introduce students to work at the age/grade level shown above by either the symbol “I” for an initial introduction to the dots, which signify that a student should be working toward mastery. The symbol “R” represents a year in which a skill is normally reviewed and retested. It is important to grasp that there is no year-by year curriculum as is found in most schools. Instead, students progress at their own pace. Copyright 2012 The Montessori Foundation
