5 Foods That Worsen Anxiety Anxiety can affect any individual belonging to any age group, class or culture. It is normal to feel anxious until the anxiety becomes an everyday affair for a person. If the condition persists and causes one to experience irrational fears, panic attacks or uneasiness, it is an indication of anxiety disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), anxiety disorders have affected approximately 40 million Americans aged 18 and above. There could be various factors leading to an anxiety disorder. A major reason behind a marked increase in anxiety levels in the youngsters is said to be the growing use of processed foods. As such, a person’s food choices play an important role in influencing his or her emotions. Since people usually fail to recognize the link between food and mental health, they often witness dramatic changes in their overall well-being. Therefore, it is important to take a nutritious diet regularly. Like most of the health issues, even anxiety disorders can be controlled or worsened to a great extent depending on the person’s eating habits. While including a protein-rich diet can help curb anxiety, there are certain foods that should be strictly avoided due to their tendency to trigger stress. Here is a list of foods that one should avoid eating when facing anxiety: 1. Wheat bran: Despite being rich in fiber content and eaten by many for its nutty flavor, mental health experts advise against consuming wheat bran when dealing with anxiety. This is because wheat bran is rich in phytic acid that binds with mood minerals, such as zinc, thereby limiting their absorption. The limited absorption of these essential nutrients can trigger anxious behavior and depression in a person.

2. Tofu: While one of the major ingredients of tofu is lean protein, it is also rich in trypsin and protease inhibitors (enzymes that restrict the digestion of protein), copper (mineral that triggers anxiety) and oligosaccharides (carbohydrate that causes flatulence). 3. Caffeine: Though coffee and other caffeinated drinks are not required to be completely avoided, it is recommended to reduce the number of such drinks. Being rich in the stimulant caffeine, they affect one’s nervous system, which causes the release of the stress hormone cortisol (hormone that triggers “fight or flight” response) in the system, thereby exacerbating anxiety and sleep problems. Moreover, caffeine also lessens the extent of absorption of the crucial mood-balancing nutrients, such as vitamin D and vitamin B. One is also likely to witness the suppression of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for maintaining mood balance, on drinking excessive coffee. 4. Canned soup: Avoiding canned and packaged foods is a great way to curb anxiety. This is because of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used in canned food which can reduce the moodstabilizing neurotransmitters in a person’s body by increasingly altering genes in the stressmediating portion of the brain. A higher exposure to these chemicals leads to increased chances of anxiety. 5. Apple juice: As juices lack slow-digesting fiber and are full of refined fructose, avoiding juices is highly recommended to avoid developing anxiety. Drinking these juices results in a blood sugar spike, causing an adrenaline (stress hormone) rush in the body along with symptoms that look similar to a panic attack. Moreover, a number of apple juice brands have shown positive results for arsenic, a toxin that induces anxiety and depression, during testing. Healthy diet to ensure right state of mind While a few tricks might work for most of the people, it is important to seek an expert’s help if anxiety is taking a toll on your health. By making the right changes in diet and food choices, one can easily lead a healthy life.
