Editorial Welcome to the latest edition of CAVALIER INTERNATIONAL magazine. If there is anything that you want to be published in the magazine, then send all information to: gv1400lxe@gmail.com Thank you for all your contributions to this magazine, all are gratefully received. Keep those articles coming, without people writing, there will be no magazine to publish and I’ll be out of a job. Now that it is winter it is time to put the bikes under cover, unless you live in the Southern States of the USA, where you can ride the year round. It has been an eventful 12 months with several Cade Raids around the world over the year. So here’s to 2017 and the next Cade Raids and ride outs. You will find information on two of next years Cade Raids in the magazine. I have not received a great deal of articles for this magazine and I thank James Mink and Roger Stone for their contributions otherwise there would not have been a magazine.. On a personal note, at the moment I don’t know if I will be riding next year has I am suffering from osteoarthritis in fingers and thumbs on both hands, my right elbow, can’t lift any weights without acute pain, right hip and my feet. Hopefully the warmer weather will improve my condition. On to a happier theme, Ronnie and I will be at the next Cade Raid even if we have to drive instead of ride. We are considering getting a lighter bike or to trike one of ours. Don’t forget this is YOUR Magazine. I only put it together and to continue doing that I URGENTLY need more articles about YOUR experiences, rides, just about anything to do with motorcycles but especially the Cavalcade.
All articles received will be published. You will be able to read/download the magazine from this web site: www.cavalcadeeurope.eu/news.htm

CADE RAIDS
The West Coast Cade Raid. Group, I have a plan for next year’s Cade Raid West. But, if we are going to Yellowstone National Park, we will need to act soon. Lodging gets booked up early and we need to act now if we are going. July and August are already booked. I am looking at September 10-16th. I have to plan it for the second week in September because of my work schedule. I have researched the lodging situation and have found what I think is the best venue, unless you want to pay $200 a night and up. This location has several lodging options. Here they are starting with the least expensive: Single Men’s Bunkhouse. This is a large room in the motel with 10 beds. There are bathroom and shower facilities. For those willing to sleep in this common area, the cost will be $270 for six nights. That is a rate of $45 per night. I will have to use club funds to rent this room in advance. So, you will need to pay me direct and I will repay the funds back to the club account. Please email me right away if you think you would like to bunk at the raid. I will decide based on the response if this is an option we can offer. audiotapes@yahoo.com Single Room. This room has a queen sized bed, bath, microwave and coffee maker, plus free WiFi and satellite TV. The cost per room for the six nights of the Cade Raid will be$544. This is a rate of $89 per night plus $10 additional for one night of a week-end. 4
Double Room. This room as two queen sized beds, bath, microwaves and coffee makers, plus free WiFi and satellite TV. The cost per room for the six nights of the Cade Raid will be$664. This is a rate of $109 per night plus $10 additional for one night of a week-end. Cabin. Each cabin contains 3 queen sized beds sleeping up to six people. The master bedroom is downstairs near the gas fireplace and has a queen size bed. The loft has two more queen beds. The kitchen is fully equipped with all cookware and silverware. It has an oven, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and dishwasher. Up to three cabins can be combined in order to sleep up to 18 people. Each cabin has a hot tub and deck with barbeque. The cost for the six nights of the Cade Raid will be $1,224 per cabin. This is based on a rate of $199 per night plus $30 additional for one night of a weekend. RV Parking. The RV slots include water, power, sewer, satellite TV. Rates are based on length of the RV. Tent sites are also available. See their website (below) for details. This is the same resort we used for the 2005 Yellowstone Cade Raid, The Sawtelle Mountain Resort in Island Park, Idaho. This is a 15-mile ride from West Yellowstone. Features include a barbeque area, an indoor pool, horseshoe pits, pavilion, and volleyball net. This is a modern facility with parking at the rooms, with nearby food and gas. They also have meeting room space and we can also have a Cavalcade Store there if you wish. For more information and to reserve a room or RV site, the website is http://www.sawtellemountainresort.com/ The Sawtelle Mountain Resort's cancellation policy allows 8 days prior to check-in for motel rooms, 31 days prior for cabins. I welcome your comments on this as our Cade Raid West for 2017. This is a tour I have hosted over the years since the 1980s. If you have never been there, you must have this on your bucket list. If you have been there, you know how awesome and inspiring this special place can be and will want to return in 2017. Please share your thoughts. Jay 5

Maintenance of Your Cavalcade
Suzuki Shaft Sleeve By Roger Stone, Peoria, Illinois, USA that was 7" long. I decided to use a 2" piece of plastic pipe with two plastic caps on either end of the pipe (glue not needed). One cap provides the surface needed to hit with a rubber hammer and the other hollowed out just big enough to the diameter of the sleeve. Made sure sleeve was positioned exactly straight and then tapped on to shaft with a few simple blows of the hammer. The secondary output seal was hammered into place using a 2 1/2" socket.
'86 Leaking oil from driveshaft boot Over the past several years, my Cade has experienced leaking oil from the drive shaft boot. I have always checked the secondary oil level and it has never been low. I have been suspecting that the engine oil has been leaking into the secondary past the seal on the engine cross shaft. After inspecting the seal surface on the cross shaft, I discovered many groves where old seals rode before in the past. I decided to Speedi-Sleeve (#99189) the shaft to provide a new smooth seal surface. While the secondary was out, I replaced both input (09283-48012) and output (09283-29005) seals on the secondary as well.
After the input and output seals have been replaced, the secondary can be reinstalled carefully! To prevent any oil seal damage, I backfilled both oil seals with synthetic wheel bearing grease as well the bearing surfaces. Note: As the secondary is installed, start top two bolts after one has cleared the rubber boot. This helps guide the new seal over the sleeve without damaging it.
Reason for the speedy sleeve was access to the area. Now the secondary output was also grooved and cleaned up easily with a a strip of 1200 Emery.
My first attempt failed and the sleeve damaged the seal because I did not support the secondary with the top bolts. Secondary oil level kept going down but was not leaking at the boot. It was mixing with the engine oil.
Note: purchased my seals from Babbit's Sports Centre in Muskegon, MI - Quick delivery and good prices. Since the engine cross shaft is fairly long, I had to fashion a sleeve driver 9
As the drive shaft is installed into the secondary, support the splined end with a screwdriver to prevent any damage to the secondary output seal. Now to put all of the other pieces back on the bike so we can ride with confidence that all oil levels are being maintained and in their proper compartments. Caution: Always check those fluid levels.
Update on secondary. The new seal was being damaged by the shoulder on the sleeve. So had to pull the sleeve with a 90° screwdriver. Cut shoulder off using a Dremil grinder. Made many cuts with a cut off blade about 1/2" each and just bent off shoulder segments. Reinstalled sleeve and gently pressed it toward bearing but not touching it.

My Life With Bikes Part 3 By James Mink
Year 1980 - Age 35: We all made it safely home from the trip to Virginia and I enjoyed it so much, that I decided it was time to put away some cash, with the intent of getting enough together to cover the difference between the trade in on my Honda 500 and a new bike. I'd already given up smoking - and wasn't sure what other corners I could cut to save up that much money. My buddy, Duane, had purchased a used 1978 Suzuki GS 750. Friend Mike still owned his MotoGuzzi - and the three of us had taken a few weekend trips around the state, with one of them being the great river ride along the Mississippi River, starting in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and riding up to Red Wing, Minnesota, and back. It was now nearing the end of August, when I got a call from Duane asking if I would like to help him out with a small remodel job and earn a little extra money. Would I? I had my work boots on before I hung up the phone. Duane is a carpenter by trade and was always on the watch for small jobs he could do on the side, for extra cash, after work and on weekends. And the call to me was because he had submitted the winning bid and gotten a remodel job at Mikes Suzuki Ranch.
Mike's Suzuki Ranch was located on Hwy 51 S, outside Janesville, Wisconsin. He had a metal building with plate glass windows across the front. The front half of the building served as his show room floor, with a counter display area, and limited storage. He wanted to add a catwalk and shelves to use for storing parts. Mike Flood and his wife, Kathy, were owners/sales staff/receptionists - and there were three mechanics who worked in the garage in the back section of the building. Duane and I would be doing the remodel after Mike closed, when there were no customers to inconvenience. The job would be constructing a 5 foot wide walkway down the length of one side and across
11
the back of the showroom. It would be nine feet off the floor, with a two rail hand railing built to resemble a ranch fence - and shelves for all the Suzuki parts and accessories. Access would be via a set of stairs behind the counter. An adjustable shelving area for storing various small parts was also to be constructed. Duane had all the necessary tools for concrete and metal drilling, which we needed to set support posts and metal beams. Muscle and an extra pair of hands was what he needed from me. Duane was given a key and the security code, with instructions as to how much time he had to disarm the silent alarm, before it alerted the police to intruders. One night, about a week after we started the job, we showed up and let ourselves in - and got down to business. We were working away, unaware that Duane had failed to shut off the alarm..... until the police showed up, lights flashing, got out with hands on guns and started banging on the door. We were instructed to put our hands up, which we did. Then Duane was instructed to hold one hand up and open the door. The police wanted to know what we were doing in there. We told them the whole story and gave them Mike's home number. They said they had already alerted Mike about an alleged break-in, and told him they were on the way to check it out. Mike soon arrived - identified us as honest citizens, employed to do a remodel for him - although he later admitted he thought about having some fun with us, by telling the police he had no idea who we were - just arrest those two vagrants and toss them in jail until we sort this out. Ha, Ha. After that incident, Duane made sure to disarm the alarm code.
The whole time we were working there, I kept checking out a brand new Black 850G, sitting in the showroom. We worked 3 to 4 hours a night, after Mike closed - and finished the job at the end of September. Mike and Kathy were thrilled with the addition, and the added storage they now had. Duane had paid me weekly - and that money went into my new bike fund. Summer was now over and it was the first week of October. I had just returned from a 200 mile ride on the old Honda - went to see the fall colours that were showing off their beauty all over the state of Wisconsin. This would be the last ride I took on that Honda, as I had developed a severe crush on the Black 850G. And was pretty sure it would be my next bike. Working on the remodel for Duane at Mike's Suzuki had made that dream possible. BUT - before I parted with my old bike and all that cash - I had to make sure of my choice by visiting the local motorcycle dealers for test rides. First up was the Wise Honda Yamaha dealership in Beloit, Wisconsin, where I took a new Goldwing Interstate 1100 for a test ride. It was very nice - but I wasn't ready for the luxury bagger market yet..... especially at that price. The Honda CB 900 Custom and Yamaha 1100 Midnight Special both caught my eye..... but so did their smaller gas tanks. Next up was Janesville Kawasaki, where the Kawasaki KZ1100 and 750 Specter were added to my list as possibilities. I did like the shaft drive bikes over the chain driven ones. I was getting tired of having to tighten, lube and adjust a chain. I still had one more dealer's inventory to check before I made up my mind - and that was at Mikes Suzuki Ranch. I wanted a look at the new line up of '81 Suzuki's. By
12
now, the owner, Mike, and I were good friends. He had a brand new Blue Suzuki GS850G sitting on the show room floor. The black one I had been lusting after had been sold - but the new blue one definitely interested me. I told him I would come back sometime Saturday, when I had more time, for a test ride. Saturday morning, I went out and got the mail - and could not believe my eyes. I had gotten the new issue of my Rider magazine - and right there, on the front cover, was a picture of a blue 1981 Suzuki GS850G - with a caption declaring, "A Smooth As Silk Ride And Great Performance In The Middleweight Motorcycle Division." Was this divine intervention? A sign? I read the article and magazine rider/editor reviews twice..... then I called Mike to tell him I was on my way. He said he would have the 850 outside waiting.
When I got there, Mike was with a customer, so I flirted with his wife, Kathy - Ha, Ha - until Mike was free. We went outside and Mike gave me the key, showed me the features of the bike, where and how to use the choke when starting, 850cc, shaft drive, 5 speed with gear indicator, self
13
cancelling turn signals, triple disc brakes, etc. I started the bike per his instructions, let it idle for a short time, put her in gear and away I went. All I could think of at that moment was WOW!! This was exactly everything the magazine article said it was. The engine was quiet. Powerful. It had a nice, large fuel tank, comfy seat, no up and down elevator action from the shaft drive, crisp, instant throttle response. I rode for a half hour - then turned around and went back to see what kind of business Mike and I could do. Mike was outside, waiting for my return - and had been wondering if I was coming back. I parked the bike, handed him the key, and went inside. Mike showed me the paperwork - price of the new bike, less my Honda trade-in. Mike gave me $400 for trade. I had paid $500 for it, and ridden it two years - so I was happy with the deal. We signed the papers - shook hands - and I became the proud owner of my first - and only - new bike. Mike told a mechanic to take it back to the garage for a shine - and when he brought it back, it was equipped with a passenger backrest and luggage rack. I asked him what was up? He said that the added storage Duane and I had built had made things so much easier for them - plus, freed up needed floor space, so..... he and Kathy were giving us a bonus. Duane was coming by later to have the same equipment installed on his bike. Doing a good job has it's rewards. Of course, I think flirting with the owner's wife helped a little bit. Handsome guy that I am. Ha, Ha. I still have a business card from Mike's Suzuki Ranch. Photo below of card - and a stock image of the 1981 Suzuki GS850G. I was ready for more riding adventures. More Tricks and Tips By Roger Stone Extra Solenoid
These are pictures of the bracket and solenoid I added to provide additional security and prevents any discharge to battery by isolation of battery. The switch just turns on/off the solenoid and the positive wire runs from the battery to the solenoid and back to connect the positive of the motorcycle. Control circuit is fused also.
