Editorial Welcome to the latest edition of CAVALIER INTERNATIONAL magazine. If there is anything that you want to be published in the magazine, then send all information to: gv1400lxe@gmail.com Thank you for all your contributions to this magazine, all are gratefully received. Keep those articles coming, without people writing, there will be no magazine to publish and I’ll be out of a job. In the last two months I have published Special Editions 1 & 2. The first was a strip and refurbishment of a Cavalcade by Yves Rummens, from Belgium. The second was a pictorial report of the East Coast Cade Raid, U.S.A., By James & Janice Mink. They are available on the web site at the bottom of this page. Enjoy them both. Thank you to those people for the supplying the information and taking the time to do the write up and submitting the photos, it is much appreciated. I would like some Ladies of the Club to write of their experiences on motorcycles, e.g. the worst or best bike they have been on, either riding or as a passenger In this magazine there are two maintenance articles. One on a test drive of a Cavalcade with a side care attached, a first for the owner. Also the final article from yours true, me, about my bikes and how we came to own two Cavalcades. Don’t forget this is YOUR Magazine. I only put it together and to continue doing that I URGENTLY need more articles about YOUR experiences, rides, just about anything to do with motorcycles but especially the Cavalcade.

Have A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year From Ronnie & David Hebblethwaite All articles received will be published. You will be able to read/download the magazine from this web site:

Lodging Locations at Cade Raid ~ September 19-23, 2016 Our host venue for Cade Raid 2016 is going to be the Ken Bar Lodge near Kentucky Lake in Gilbertsville, Kentucky. Our meeting room, Cavalcade Store, classes and workshops will all be held there. The good news is that we have a great group rate on guest rooms of only $50 per night for six nights (Sunday arrival with Saturday departure). The bad news is that we only have a limited number of rooms reserved for our group. This means that some of us will need to stay at the motel across the road. (Details on that location will follow here shortly.) So, the first to make reservations at Ken Bar Lodge, will be staying in our host property. Also, you must book for the full week. Telephone: _270-362-4990_ (http://www.kenbarlodge.com/contact.htm) Website: http://www.kenbarlodge.com/ If you are staying for only part of the week, or if Ken Bar is booked up, you will need to reserve your lodging at the Bel Air Motel (also in Gilbertsville, Kentucky). It is right across the road (Highway US-641). Our group rate for guest rooms there is $55 per night. All the rooms at the Bel Air have microwaves, fridges, and two queen-sized beds. With both locations you will need to identify yourself as a member of the Suzuki Cavalcade Owners group attending Cade Raid 2016. For families and compatible groups, there are also a few cottages which sleep more people. Call for the rates and other details. Reservation Telephone: 270-362-4254 ~ Other Calls: 270-362-7357 Website: http://www.belairmotel.com/ There is a third lodging option. Right next to the Ken Bar Lodge is the Kentucky Lake Resort and RV Park. They have spaces for RVs and also for tents. Additionally, they have cottages for families and small groups. Rates for the RV spaces with power and water are $21 per night. Full hook-ups are $25 per night. We have a group discount of 10%. You will need to call for costs on the cottage rentals. EZS Kompakt Sidecar Installation to 1986 Cavalcade Episode 3 By Timo Saarno, Finland. Finally the day came to do some proper test drives. I found out that the Toe In is best when it is almost 0 degrees. I had it way too much in, up to 4 degrees, first. That caused the bike behave oddly, like driving on a wet surface or on a trolley rails, sliding annoyingly as the bike corrected its position continuously. To be able to re-arrange the Toe In properly, I build up a frame for setting the correct angle.

I still used the sidecar tire for matching. This time I prepared a centimeter setting to the front right on line with bike front wheel axle.

6

I also remembered that the rear wheel is wider, about one centimeter, than front wheel, so I took that centimeter away by adding a piece of wood next to front wheel. Now it was quite straightforward to adjust the Toe In.

7

I also attached a caravan type water level to the sidecar frame in such way that I can always check that the sidecar is in correct level compared to the bike, although I don’t think that it should change after final tightening of bolts. Unfortunately Mr. Murphy came and crushed my plans to drive with my family to Cade Raid Norway as my last year (2014) quick fix for carburetors, done in a rainy camping at Cade Raid Havelte Holland, broke. Due to wrong kind of intake pipe clamp I had it tightened too much, which caused intake pipe to break. Believe me, the bike did not work very well! So. Being pissed off with that I decided to do complete carburetor rebuild and at the same time I decided to change all ignition coils, as I had always suffered of one coil malfunction when driving in heavy rain. I ordered the new modern high performance coil set from Tracy, but I did not know that those are not “off the shelf” products. Those took almost two and a half months to come. I argumented strongly to Tracy that he should make a notice for such waiting time into the detailed info of these coils on his webshop. I hoåpe he does that. What comes to driving then, that was it for the summer 2015. Summer is so short in Finland. Anyway it was a good enough excuse to buy a Fiat Barchetta open top sports car to make the best out of the rest of the summer.

8

The complete rebuild is another story. I may come up with that later on this magazine. But what comes to the sidecar project, I’m quite happy now. I takes about fifteen minutes to remove the sidecar and lay it on extra carriage and about the same time to reconnect it. As I did not – and will not – change my steering stem to any ugly sidecar specific, I can use the bike solo whenever I want to.

Unfortunately I haven´t learned enough how to bend elements in SketchUp, so I cannot yet provide the last, fourth bracket design for you as nicely as previous ones, so You just have to live with this ugly 1:1 sketch. You can find and use freely the project photos and bracket designs from my OneDriveat http://1drv.ms/1mk AXiz Timo Saarno SCC Finland nettisamurai@caval cadeeurope.eu

Maintenance of Your Cavalcade

To Change A Drive Shaft On A Cavalcade By Bengt Sunberg, Sweden On my way home from a bike event I started to noticed a small noise that came at intervals somewhere from the rear wheel that I haven´t heard before.

same time as you have a second person "jerking" the rear wheel "back and forth" (with a gear engaged). Wow! There was a terrible sight!

Since I already had left my buddies for my last 80 - 100 km to home and that sound/noise started to come at shorter and shorter intervals, I started to become more and more concerned about a wheel locking, sending me and my bike to the asphalt. The last 40 -50 km, I almost drove at a "walking pace".

The first I saw was a dry red "iron powder" laying everywhere in the swing pipe! When the the wheel was yanked I clearly could see that one shaft on the joint had broken! I sent a mail to Billy Dump and he confirmed that this was a rather common problem in the USA and this normally happens around "80 - 90 000" miles (13 - 145,000 km) with the original joint up to 87 years model.

I didn´t know it was possible to drive a Cavalcade that slow (☺)! At last I was home and and was able to put my bike in the garage.

After 1987 the Cavalcade where equipped with a reinforced (= bigger) joint.

Trouble shooting. I was not sure but had a strong suspicion that it might be the drive shaft. So, some days later I hung up the bike so I could rotate the rear wheel.

His statement seemed to be very correct, since my bike is a 87 years model and had just passed 135 000 km! But Billy Dump did not seem

There might be an easier way to change the drive shaft, but this worked well for me. This took me approximately 8 - 10 hours, during a Saturday/Sunday weekend. I am grateful that this happened when I was "nearly home" and not when I was abroad on a FIM rally or something similar

Police Cavalcades

By David Hebblethwaite, UK In 1996 We bought our first Cavalcade. It was a 1987 GV1400LX with 51,000 miles on the clock, The trunk and saddle bags had paintings on them, all by hand and on top of the decals. Whilst they looked ok from a distance, they look terrible close up. One problem it did have was the clutch slave cylinder was leaking and had to be replaced.

However, we didn’t have this Cavalcade all that long as the dealer had falsified the date of manufacture, stating it was a 1989 not a 1987. So we decided to exchange it for our present 1988 LX.

Unfortunately the dealer knew very little about the Cavalcade and replaced it with one from a GSX1100F. Now this made changing gear very difficult as I had to ram the bike into any gear.

This had just under 15,000 miles on the clock when we got it in February 1997. The one problem it had was the cruise control didn’t work, and being new to the Cavalcade, I did not know what was wrong. Then in 1999 I joined the Cavalcade_USA on line forum and found out what the problem was, someone had shorted the clutch switch. Got a new switch, found where the wires were and everything worked fine.

Our first long distance trip was to Carcasson, in Southern France. A total of 2000 miles round trip. If you ever go to France, this is a must see place. It is a 12 century walled Citadel.

I decided that the ride outs would be for the children so that it would be memorable for them and ok for the adults.

In 2007, I decided to try and resurrect In 1998 I started the Suzuki Cavalcade the Cade Raids in Europe and the rest Club UK with three other people. Maintenance of Your Cavalcade, Part 2 Precision Plastics Windshield By Gerald Clark, U.S.A. I didn't just get my Precision Plastics windshield, but I got mine a couple years ago when I needed to replace the original one. I didn't want the stock windshield because the height was bad for me. I was looking right through the top of it. I'm 5'10". I tried to adjust it, but it didn't help. This windshield is quite a bit higher and wider. Measuring from the top of the dash to the top of the windshield it's 17" and you can hopefully see by the pictures how wide it is. I've found there are both pros and cons to the larger windshield.

Pros:

Good wind protection, even for the hands. Good rain protection. I don't have to look through the top of a windshield.

Cons:

Reduction in mileage-mine dropped 2-4 mpg. Backjdraft - this is a con because I, can on occasion, smell my exhaust, always when I let up on the throtle.

If you get this windshield you will want to paint the bottom like the stock one, otherwise you can see the bottom of the dash. I hope this is helpful.

POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR SUZUKI ECSTAR AT SEPANG TEST Team Suzuki Press Office – November 24. Team SUZUKI ECSTAR has completed a successful private test session at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia today, where Maverick Viñales and the test team debuted Suzuki’s new seamless gearbox on the GSX-RR. Viñales was supported in the twoday test by Takuya Tsuda and Nobuatsu Aoki, who ran many laps to supply Suzuki’s R&D department in Japan with useful information and data before the winter break. Unfortunately, Aleix Espargaró couldn’t join in because of the injury he suffered recently while training that caused him a flexion fracture to a vertebrae and required a two-to-three-week lay-off. New items tested by Viñales, Tsuda and Aoki were the new Michelin tyres and unified software, which will be introduced from 2016 to all MotoGP™ teams, but also the long-awaited seamless gearbox that equipped both the test machine and Viñales’ Factory GSX-RR. Together with many improvements in set-up configuration and electronics, the three riders carried out intensive work and left the test very satisfied with the progress. Viñales reported that he had very good feeling with the evolution of his GSX-RR and gave positive feedback about the new seamless gearbox, along with the new electronics. All areas are still to be explored and developed further in Japan over the winter.

17

Davide Brivio – Team “These have been two very intense days but the outcome of the test is positive. We had few things to test, among which we managed to test the new seamless gearbox and I am happy that Maverick had a first positive impression. We also had the chance to compare some chassis parts and gathered important information for the winter development. We also started to work with the 2016 unified software - the test team already started with it in Valencia a couple of weeks ago - and we also gave it to Maverick. On this area we still have much work to do but the start was positive. For us this test has been very important to give the directions to work-on in the winter that we were called to do. We also tested new tyres for Michelin and found some good improvements to be worked on further in the future. “In February we will be testing here again for the first IRTA test and we will try to finalise then even further improvements, especially in electronics. Unfortunately, Aleix could not join us so he will have a chance to test those items in February, hopefully after further improvements. We also had the support of our test riders Tsuda and Aoki who ran many laps to further investigate the new software and fine-tune the seamless gearbox.” Maverick Viñales: “These two days have been very intense; we tested many many things and I’m happy because I could try the 2016 electronics. The first touch was positive and it left me with the feeling that it has a great potential, but we still have so many things to work on and there’s room to improve. I’m also happy I could test the new seamless, we were expecting it and my impression is very positive. The track was not really clean which meant I couldn’t push really hard, but for our team the testing was good. Now we have plenty of information to work on during the winter and get ready for the next test in February. To go for the winter break with such a good feeling is positive and it gives me great hopes for the further improvements. Now I can take a little rest and then start training again to be ready for the next tests in February.”
