Greenwich West Children’s Centres Welcome to our latest information booklet. Activities for our 5 Children’s Centres are detailed here. This includes weekly events as well as one-off events. We provide a variety of services to families across Greenwich West including health, learning and play opportunities, family support, parenting and different activities that you can attend with your under 5. We are always open to new ideas, so please let us know if you have any suggestions.

What is a Children’s Centre? Children’s Centres offer all families with children under five a range of services, information and support in their local community. The support varies according to local needs but most centres offer the following: l

advice during pregnancy and when your baby is born

l

home visiting

l

family drop-ins

l

parenting support

l

information about your child’s health needs

l

training courses to improve your life skills or help you back to work

l

help finding specialist groups and services

l

family support.

Centres work closely with other local organisations, so if there is something they can’t help you with themselves, they will usually be able to give you details of an organisation who can. You can find out more about our Children’s Centres online at www.quaggydevelopmenttrust.org.

There are many ways you can get involved at your local Children’s Centre. You can volunteer by doing a variety of tasks including things such as helping out at groups, play sessions and supporting other parents and carers through our Parents in Touch Service. You can be part of a Parent Forum to help support and develop the Centre. Or you can just attend the activities and get involved, meet other parents and get to know the staff. If you would like to find out more about getting involved in your Centre or about anything to do with Children’s Centres then please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to talk to you.

We do not allow the use of mobile phones by parents anywhere on Children’s Centre sites. This is because we have a strict safeguarding policy that is in place to protect the children attending. Staff have use of a camera to take photos. If you have any questions around this issue please talk to a member of staff.

Some of the Services Explained Dad’s Group and Stay and Plays We run groups for Dads including Saturday Dad’s Brunches and Stay and Plays. There are a variety of activities that you can access with your child including science activities, outings and even residential trips.

Parents Forum A Parents Forum is made up of interested parents who want to get involved in the Children’s Centre they attend. There are opportunities to have your say and influence the activities and events that take place. There are also opportunities to receive some training and develop skills. If you would like to get involved please contact us on 020 8465 9785.

Stay and Play This is usually a staff run drop-in where you can come with your child. You stay at the session and are able to meet other mums, dads and carers in a friendly atmosphere with opportunities to play with your child.

Parents in Touch Service Our befriending service provides families with a volunteer befriender who will come and meet with you on a regular basis. You may feel isolated or just need someone to talk to. You may have trouble getting out or accessing local services. If so then the Parents in Touch Befriending Service can help you. To find out more call us or visit www.quaggydevelopmenttrust.org/befriending-service.

Interactive Music Come and try the instruments and join in with a Music Therapist who will be running the group. Help your child be ready for nursery or school by supporting their listening skills, confidence and social awareness.

Counselling Service This is a one to one service where parents can get support on a variety of personal issues in confidence. Counselling takes place at various centres please contact us for more information.

Family Support Children’s Centres offer support to families within our area in a variety of ways. All families go through some difficult times and our service understands that we can play a part in empowering mothers, fathers and carers in their role as parents. We can offer information on services you may wish to access. We provide group support in ways such as parenting courses and support groups. We even offer one to one support with different issues. Please feel free to talk to staff about any concerns you may have. We are here to help.

Infant Feeding GWCC has been awarded the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Award. We are the first Borough in London where Midwives, Health Visitors and Children’s Centres have achieved this. This means we promote in our centres: l Breastfeeding l Responsive Parenting l Strong and loving relationships between parents and their babies If you would like to know more, please contact a member of staff.

Functional Skills Functional Skills are practical skills in English, Maths and ICT for all learners. Functional Skills provide an individual with essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and work.

Healthy Start Scheme All our children’s centres promote the Healthy Start Scheme. If you are pregnant for have a child under 4, the Healthy Start Scheme can help you buy fruit, veg or milk. If you qualify for the scheme, you will be sent vouchers to use in many different shops. You will also get vouchers to swap for free vitamins suitable for mums and children aged 6 months to 5 years. All our children’s centres can help you with: l Checking to see if you are eligible for the Healthy Start Scheme l Filling in the Application Form l Swapping your Healthy Start vitamin vouchers for vitamins l Using your Healthy Start fruit and veg vouchers in local shops If you want to know more about Healthy Start ask a member of staff or go to www.healthystart.nhs.uk.

Together for Twos Did you know that your two year old could be entitled to 15 hours of free early learning a week? This could be with a registered childminder or a Children’s Centre, crèche, local nursery or pre-school playgroup. All of these early learning places have qualified staff who are trained to look after children. They are inspected by Ofsted and have been graded by Ofsted as providing good or outstanding learning experiences for children. Research has shown that good quality early learning and care can expand children’s development especially in communication and language, developing their physical skills and socialising with other children and making friends. Taking a Together for Twos place also helps families, as you can have time for yourself and take advantage of the activities and courses run at your local Children’s Centre, for example, courses such as preparing to go back to work, finding out more about child development and first aid. Currently, free Together for Twos places are not available for all families. If you are receiving benefits or on a low income, then you may be entitled. To find out more about a Together for Two place come in and visit your nearest GWCC Children’s Centre. We currently have vacancies at Quaggy @ Invicta Children’s Centre. Contact for more information.

English Classes – ESOL English for speakers of other languages (ESOL). Learning English or improving what you already know is really useful if you want to study, get on in work or learn more about your rights and responsibilities. Creches are available for certain activities. Please let the Centre know if you cannot take up a creche place as providing a crèche is very expensive and if you are not going to attend we can then allocate the space to another child.
