The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 28th June 2009 Theme for this Sunday: Who do you say that I am Readings: Isa 52:13-53:12, Luke 9:18-36 Theme for 5th July: St Thomas, Apostle & Martyr Readings: Hab 2:1-4, Psalm 117, Eph 2:19-22, John 20:24-29

Tim Writes Praise God we have managed to rent the vicarage and to do so within a week of advertising which enables us to meet our commitments to Holy Trinity Parish who had covered the Neale's up until the end of June. Perfect timing, couldn't be better! I have also done a bit of an inspection of the house which we know to be cold at times and have discovered the ceiling insulation could do with an improvement and that there is no underfloor insulation. Our plan is to insulate the floor and ceiling and to put down a moisture barrier under the floor as well. This should improve the warmth of the property no end. We are eligible for the new Government scheme and with some Diocesan assistance we should be able to complete the project relatively cheaply. Last week we talked in church about discipleship; recognising that disciples are not perpetual learners but rather like all apprentices reach a point where they need to become replicators. Everyone of us in church is

there because someone discipled us. Someone invested time, energy and prayer into discipling us. The key question is who are we discipling? I believe very strongly that there is someone for everyone. Someone whom God would have us disciple. Someone we are praying for and investing time into with the intention that they too become a disciple of Jesus. Who is it for you? Take a moment now and in prayer ask God who it is and then intentionally think about how you are going to disciple that person. WOMEN'S AGLOW Women's 'All New Aglow' at theRIVER Church, 77 Packers Quay, Blaketown, Thurs 2 July 7.30pm. Come and hear the new Elim Pastor Julie Kenny share what God has placed on her heart for the women. ST ANDREW'S BLAKETOWN Is up for sale. Pray for The River church which meet there to know God's will and how to proceed. Lawn Mowing Roster 28th June Stewart Nimmo

INVITE PEOPLE HOME FOR A POTLUCK MEAL - SUN 5th of JULY The Wardens and vicar are keen to promote an even greater sense of community within the parish and have designated Sunday the 5th of July as day when everyone in the parish is encouraged to either host or be a guest at a potluck meal with other parishioners. There will be sheets at the back of each church where you can indicate whether you want to be a host and how many guests you can handle, or whether you simply want to be a guest. Please fill these in over the next few weeks. Liaise with the hosts re: time, special dietary requirements, etc.

PARISH CONCERT 7pm - 11th JULY Last year we ran an amazing Parish Concert and this year it promises to be even better. We've limited the length of the concert and therefore the number of items. Supper also will be at the end. At the back of the church are sheets to note your name and the items you would like to perform. Time constraints may limit you to just one or two items but you can list several so put them in order of priority. There are also invites to hand out to folk. Please bring a dessert to share as well. MARRIAGE COURSE 25th July, Relate, a marriage seminar by Family Life designed to ignite your marriage. Brochures at back.

Tim Writes We've had visiting OAC evangelist Lew Myer with us last week and he has ministered very effectively at Bible in Schools and at Shirley's Home Group. In fact his example has inspired me personally in the area of evangelism an area we all wrestle with as Christians. I hope to have him back in the future for some wider ministry. On another note I have been elected as the Chairperson of the local Minister's Association for a year, something I have managed to avoid for many years. Tim Writes At vestry a few weeks ago we discussed ways in which we might raise the profile of missions within the parish. We already give quite widely to missions as a parish but it often happens in the background without people being fully aware of it. To this end we talked about a number of possibilities and at the forefront was the idea of making the role of the Missions representative more proactive and beyond just the work of the Anglican Board of Missions and having a second person in Cobden. Other ideas include a Missions page on the website profiling our missions work and highlighting special appeals, a possible regular email update to parishioners with email and regular reporting back spots in the services and newsletters. Let us know what you think. WITNESS ONLINE You can view the Diocesan magazine "The Witness," on the internet. Just browse to:

The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 17th May 2009 Theme for this Sunday: War in the Old Testament Readings: Isaiah 45:1-7, Matt 2:1-18 Theme for 24th May: Logan Baty Readings: 2 Kings 4:8-37, Luke 8:40-56

Tim Writes A couple of Sundays ago we had a great service at Cobden. We had a number of visitors and the message provoked a lot of discussion. The topic however of a Christian's response to war was a sensitive one for some and aroused a number of strong emotions, that were then expressed in quite a strong way in the service. I want to say quite clearly that I have no problem with people feeling strongly about subjects, expressing differing opinions and even asking questions because our church is and should be a safe place where people can feel free to express themselves within the context of a loving and supportive community. However I also want to say that safety goes both ways and if in the strength of the opinions expressed others feel unsafe then that expression needs to be re-thought. Expressing oneself is fine but we need to be careful that we always do so in a way that doesn't hurt others unnecessarily.

SUPPORT THE 40 HOUR FAMINE The Shed is again joining with Grey High to raise funds for this years famine. Times may be harder for us, but imagine what they must be like for the poorest of the poor, with giving dropping. There will be those again this year who find getting sponsors hard, so if you would like to sponsor a young person then contact Nicki 768-9605. STUFF FAMINE TEAM WOULD LOVE We have a number of fund raising options. One is a recession fashion parade. So we would LOVE your old clothes We will also hold a garage sale on the famine weekend camp at the Shed, so any garage sale type items including baking can be dropped off at 186 Main South Rd. Lastly we are very keen to run a couple of raffles, so if you have a load of wood or could bake us a cake etc that would be wonderful as well. Contact Nicki on 768-9605. PRAYER DIARY The prayer meeting keeps a diary now. Please ring Dalma with prayer requests. Lawn Mowing Roster 24th May Henk Stengs

The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 10th May 2009 Theme for this Sunday: Christ True Vine (Run), Pauline Stengs (Cob) Readings: Acts 9:26-31, John 15:1-8 (Run), Pauline Stengs (Cobden) Theme for 17th May: War in the Old Testament Readings: Isaiah 45:1-7, Matt 2:1-18

Tim Writes This will be Pam Honey's last Sunday with us for a while. Words can't really express just how sad this occasion will be. We will be saying more in the service but for now on behalf of the parish. Go with God Pam we will miss you in so many ways. HOW WE GIVE TO MISSIONS It was informative and encouraging to see the overseas missions work we are supporting through the Anglican Board of Missions (ABM) a few weeks ago. I suspect it was fairly new information for a lot of people and it got me to thinking that an explanation and an update on how and what we give to missions might be helpful. Firstly, how do we give to missions? Well for those using envelopes you'll notice that there are two spaces for recording your giving. One records the money you give towards the general running of the church which come to around $85,000 a year. The second space records any extra giving you want to put direct

towards missions. Currently as a church we plan on giving $2,640 to the ABM. Sadly we just fell short of this target last year so if you haven't yet considered putting a little towards missions over and above your normal giving can I encourage you to think about it. Both amounts are credited towards your giving and result in a tax receipt at the end of the financial year. Secondly how much do we give away as a church and where does it go? $2,640 goes to ABM from the envelope system but we also give 10% of the profit from pizza sales to ABM. Just as a note if we raise more than $2,640 we don't keep any back, it all goes to ABM. We also give around $200 at Easter to missions work in Israel and at Xmas we give $4-500 towards Tear Fund and Christian World Service. We also give 10% of the take from the Sharing Shed away to Missions. $750 to Bible in Schools, $350 towards a sponsored child and $400 to orphans in Romania. So you can see that as a church we give quite widely and generously. Lawn Mowing Roster 17th May S. Nimmo

OPEN DOORS VISIT On Monday the 18th of May Wayne Curham of Open Doors will be speaking at the Cobden Anglican Church at 7:30pm. He will be speaking on the state of the persecuted church in Islamic countries as secret believers. All welcome and an offering will be taken. SWINE FLU AND COMMUNION Theologically speaking receiving just the bread is deemed to be sufficient for having received the whole of communion. So for anyone with the flu or flu like symptoms or for those have been near or live with those with the flu then can I encourage you to at the

present time to take the bread only when you come up for communion. COMMUNITY MEALS Meals will commence at Greymouth Baptist Church building (76 High St.) on Tues 26th May at 12 noon and continue till Oct. The meals will consist of two courses: Soup and hot meal or hot meal and dessert. Gold coin donations are appreciated. Anyone from the community is welcome to attend. Bookings not required. SPEAKER ON ISLAM IN NZ Shashikant Christian will be speaking at Cobden church this Tues 12th May at 7:30pm on Islamic influence in NZ. All welcome. Donation taken.

The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 3rd May 2009 Theme for this Sunday: Christianity and War Readings: Matt 5:38-48, Luke 3:1-14 Theme for 10th May: Christ the True Vine (Runanga), Pauline Stengs (Cobden) Readings: Acts 9:26-31, 1Jo 3:18-24, John 15:1-8 (Runanga), Pauline Stengs (Cobden)

Tim Writes Last Sunday's sung worship time at Cobden as we made space for God to speak into our lives personally and corporately was a powerful time. There were several words that spoke clearly of God's love for us despite our struggles and of his desire to work in and through us to touch our communities in the power of His Spirit, and not in our own strength. I look forward to seeing how God will speak to us and through us in the future as we work at becoming more attune to his voice and will for our lives. Next Sunday will also be a sad day as it is Pam Honey's last Sunday with us for the immediate future. Her and Steve leave shortly afterwards to go to Australia to be near their boys and families. It is hard to express how deeply we will miss Pam. ANGLICAN BOARD OF MISSIONS It was encouraging and informative last Sunday to also see the Board of Missions DVD which gave us a good overview of the Board's work and the way in which we as a Parish connect

with them financially and otherwise. We will be discussing at vestry how we might make that connection more active and prominent. WORD FOR TODAY The Word for Today devotional for May, June, July has arrived and copies are at the back of each church. Please feel free to take one and if you can please drop a $1 or $2 into the plate to help cover the cost. NEW LOCK - SEE TIM We have installed a new combination lock with a secret code to get into the Cobden Church. If you are a person like one of our church cleaners who needs to know the code then please ring Tim who will give it to you. One helpful suggestion for remembering the code was to input it into your cell phone as a contact. e.g. Name=Church Code, Phone No.= xxxx (code). If you are given the code please never ever divulge it for obvious security reasons but also to protect our ability to claim insurance. Lawn Mowing Roster 3rd May Tim Mora

PRAYER FOR HEALING Just a reminder for Cobden folk. There is always Ministry prayer for any need offered during the sung worship. Just move forward to the prayer team and they will pray with you. However the team is also available for prayer out the back immediately after the service. They will wait 5-10min after the service finishes and then if no-one comes will join the rest of us. You can also approach team members and ask for specific prayer. OPEN DOORS VISIT On Monday the 18th of May Wayne Curham of Open Doors will be speaking at the Cobden Anglican Church at 7:30pm. He will be speaking on the state of the persecuted church

in Islamic countries as secret believers. All welcome and an offering will be taken. WOMEN'S AGLOW Thursday 7th May at 77 Packers Quay (old St Andrew's) Women's Aglow will be hosting Sista Jacqui a world class gospel singer. Meeting starts at 7:30pm and an offering will be taken. PROMISE KEEPERS, 14-16th AUG Promise Keepers is just around the corner. It is a fantastic event for men and I am happy to use some of my vicar's discretionary funding to help guys get there. Transport is free and the accommodation is cheap. Brochures arriving soon See Tim to express an interest.

Tim Writes The AGM went very well. The parish is in good heart and holding it's own financially and has managed to do some major property improvements and maintenance over the last year. However as I said in my report we must not rest on our laurels. We have in effect created a great platform from which to launch from and this year we do want to look carefully at how we can be more intentional with regards to outreach and discipleship. So watch this space. At the AGM we also informally ratified the decision of vestry not to proceed with using the vicarage as a community hub. This means when the Neale's vacate the property we will rent it out. Our vestry and wardens remain unchanged from last year apart from Pam Honey who came off vestry and Verna Scott who has come on. A warm welcome to Verna as she takes up this leadership role in the Parish. SYMPATHY Our sympathy to Jessie Lord who lost her husband Jack last week. Jack took

ill suddenly and sadly passed away. Please uphold Jessie and her family in your prayers and thoughts. WORD FOR TODAY The Word for Today devotional for May, June, July has arrived and copies are at the back of each church. Please feel free to take one and if you can please drop a $1 or $2 into the plate to help cover the cost. Tim Writes This coming week Nicky and I will both be away at the Diocesan Leadership Conference. Nicky will be presenting a workshop on discipling young people and I will be there as a general participant. This coming Saturday is ANZAC, a day we remember not so much wa but rather the sacrifice that so many made for our and others freedom. I would encourage you to attend the Dawn Parade at 7am on Saturday, the gates unveiling at 2pm at Dixon Park and or the Blackball parade at 11:30am. Today we hold our AGM to discuss how the Parish has gone over the last year and to plan and prepare for the coming year. I would encourage all parishioners to attend and to let their voice be heard where necessary. COGS PUBLIC MEETING COGS short for Community Organisations Grants Scheme give away around about $230,000 each year to community groups on the Coast and on Fri 24th at 11:30am they get

the chance to report back to the community on what they have done and visa versa for groups to raise local issues. Anyone is welcome to attend. The Youth Project that employs Nicky is a recipient of COGS funding. ANDRE RIEU The Salvation Army ladies are inviting the women of Cobden-Runanga parish to an afternoon's entertainment on Tues 28th April from 1-3:30pm at the Salvation Army Hall. Please RSVP to Sue at 768-5045 (day) or 768-6613 (eve) by 24th April. EASTER CAMP Easter Camp went very well. The numbers we took were less than last year but that made for a more intimate group that pulled together and became closer. The speakers were very good and a number of the young people came away challenged in their thinking. Lawn Mowing Roster 19th April Stewart Nimmo

THE WAY YOUTH SERVICE This year the youth project launched a 6:30pm youth service run out of the Baptist church on Sunday nights. The service has gone extremely well with usually around 25-30 people in attendance. The young people provide live music through their own band, occasional testimonies as well as a good challenging speaker. Please keep the service in your prayers. MARRIAGE COURSE Beginning May 6 at 7.30pm and continuing for 8 weeks, Holy Trinity Church will host a teaching series to

enhance marriages. It is an opportunity for you and your spouse to have some one-on-one time, enjoy some excellent teaching, and indulge in a yummy dessert. The course comes from the same group that does the Alpha course. All discussions are between you and your spouse only, so privacy is completely respected. Registration by April 29th. Please ring Holy Trinity Church (768-7508) to sign up. Cost is $20 per couple to cover materials. Cobden will be offering the course as well in the future but in the short term here is an opportunity for couples.

Tim Writes Our thoughts and prayers are with Eily Pike who lost Barrie Pike a very dear nephew and with Amanda and David, Raquel and Mark, Barrie's children. We are all saddened by Barrie's death and wish life could have been easier for him over the last few years. I have been very encouraged by the number of people who have expressed to me how they have been quite touched and moved by the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services we have held. Being reflective style services how much you get from them depends to a large degree on how much you put in; on the way in which you approach the service and open yourself up to the possibility of God meeting with you in a special way. The comments I have received tell me that we have a congregation of people of mature and deep faith, a congregation through whom God can do much. JERUSALEM & MID. Performed a blessing at a new Kiwi creche, taken an AGM, counselled a number of folk, interviewed for the Bishop two couples applying for ordination, applied for a funding grant, attended a Lion's breakfast, a Minister's Assoc meeting, helped with sound at a school production, clinically supervised a minister, done loads of admin, picked up donated goods, done property maintenance, met with a charitable trust and other folk regarding various matters, done a short overnight tramp with my children and more. So there you go, a snapshot of the vicar's job. I have to say though that although it is an incredibly diverse role it is also one I find incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

like the wardens and ministry team leaders will need to get busy soon. Also we are looking for nominations for vestry members and people's warden. A key item of business at the meeting this year will be looking at what we do with the vicarage for the future. One possibility is a community hub. Tim Writes As most of you realise Nicky and I live at 186 Main South Rd in Karoro where we also look after "The Shed" and run the youth project. This means that our vicarage is in effect surplus to requirements. Currently we make it available to the Neale family as a straight swap with Holy Trinity for use of 186 Main South Rd. Eventually this arrangement will cease and we will have to arrange for the property to be rented. One possibility that has been put to us for consideration is to consider making the property available to a trust which would use the property as a community hub for social services. There is obviously a lot involved in this ranging from resource consents, Diocesan approval, parish approval, a memorandum of understanding about what can and can not go on, our ability to put it back into use as a vicarage as required, our membership on the trust, how it relates to the parish and so on. So much in fact that it would probably not take place before the end of this year but it

is something for folks to talk and pray about with each other as we consider if this the direction that God may be taking us. Please feel free to talk to vestry members, wardens or the vicar at any stage. JERUSALEM & MID. Tim Writes Life seems often to come in stages. Birth, schooling, work, marriage, children and now for Nicky and I the leaving home of children and the death of our last grandparent. At each stage you face things you never had to before and yet strangely, like most I suspect, we feel prepared and up to the task because of previous life experience and the knowledge that prayer and faith undergirds much of what we do. However the one thing that does filter into your conscious thought more often as you get older is your own mortality, the shortness of the time remaining and the need to use it well and wisely. It's not that as a Christian I fear death, in some respects I look forward to the life to come, but in having said that there is the implicit acknowledgement that it will be the final stage and it heightens the need to make the most of what remains of this life. Paul said something similar in Philippians "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful

Tim Writes I want to thank everyone for your expressions of support to Nicky and I regarding her Grandmother's recent illness and passing away. Esther passed away on Sunday about 30min after we had left for home. In the end I felt we made the right decision to go over and to spend that time with her. Nicky got to stay the whole night and from the moment we arrived she was more settled and peaceful and did not require morphine again. It was like she was waiting for us and when we left it was time for her to let go as well. The funeral was on Thursday and I was blessed to be able to take it. Thank you once again for your prayers. We have felt strongly supported by the Parish and all you have done has been much appreciated. AGM AND NOMINATIONS The AGM will be on the 19th of April immediately after the 10:30am service at Cobden. We will have a quick cuppa and then reconvene for our

TAX REBATES AND GIVING Last year the Govt changed the tax rebates on charitable donations. Previously you could claim a 1/3 of what you gave up to a maximum of $630. Any giving above $1890 was not eligible for a rebate. The Govt realising how a cap on rebateable giving could limit giving to charity decided to do away it altogether to encourage people to give more. So now you can claim a 1/3 back no matter how much you give. Give $10,000 and you can get $3,333 back instead of just $630. The new rules came into effect last year and people will already be benefiting from this, but to do so you need to be on the parish envelope system. See Tim if you would like more info on this matter. Lawn Mowing Roster 15th March E Holman

Tim Writes It would sometimes seem that Christianity mainly expresses itself through the written and spoken word and yet there is a rich Christian heritage in the arts as we caught a glimpse of with Wayne Lorimer's message a few weeks ago. Indeed the picture of creation in Genesis and many of the Psalms would tell us that the truth about God can come in many creative shapes and forms. In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in the arts from a Christian perspective especially with the advent of new forms of media and technologies. Here in NZ a trust has been formed called the Chrysalis Trust to inspire, resource and network together artists and all those interested in expressing faith through the arts. I would encourage anyone who has an interest in this area to take a look at www.csartspace.org.nz or www.cs.org.nz. There are also some brochures at the back of church. SUNDAY SCHOOL LEADERS

Readings: Genesis 3:1-8, Mark 7:14-23 (Runanga) Henk Stengs (Cobden) Theme for 15th February: Amazing Faith Readings: Hebrews 11:1-12, Luke 7:1-10

Tim Writes It's incredible how quickly the year begins to move. Already I am looking at March trying to find free weekends for various activities. I need to make sure I stick to my own advice of prioritising and balancing time this year. Rebekah is well and truly settled into her flat in wellington. Her address for those who might want to write is F5, 39 Boulcott St, Wellington Central. She is literally a 5min walk from everything in the city centre. Her flat is on the 12th floor and she gets great views of the city. The four days I spent with her were important as not only do I have peace of mind about her coping but I think she does as well. We worked out buses, budgeting, got her learner's license, got a library card, applied for part time jobs, thought about churches, menu's and more. It was a busy but special time and I came away feeling that she's going to be okay. Phew. We'll keep in touch of course via email, skype video conferencing, texting and

via the Freedom Plan on her cell phone. Ahh the wonders of technology. PARISH PICNIC SUN 22nd FEB. Straight after church on the 22nd and out to Lake Mahinapua for lunch, swimming and kayaks. CARD AND CRAFT DAY Sat 14th Feb 10:30am till 3pm at the Uniting Church Hall, cost $10. Please bring your own cutting board, pencil, rubber, and craft knife. If you can't, we do have some available. This year we want to have a fun time so we have decided that we will go back to basics. You will receive packs again and you will only make four cards. This will give you time to finish the card completely. These will be easy cards to make. AAW at "THE SHED" The first AAW meeting of the year will be at "The Shed" next Tuesday at 6:30pm. It will be a BBQ so please bring meat and a salad. Nicky will provide dessert. Lawn Mowing Roster 8th Feb Tim Mora

Tim Writes Well it's upon me. The first of our children is about to leave home. How do I feel I ask myself. Well I have very mixed emotions. I feel glad for her as she moves into independence and adulthood and begins to follow her heart and passion. I feel proud of who she is and what she has already begun to achieve. I feel sad because she is leaving and I will miss her. I feel afraid because I am no longer there to protect or guide her and it's a big bad world and I hope she will be all right. I worry too that her faith may come under pressure from new friends and peer groups and fall by the wayside. So what can I do I ask myself. And the answer I get is not much. I can pray and I will, but in the end I just have to trust that the job we have done so far has established strong enough principles and character to keep her safe and to allow her to build her life upon a solid foundation. All I can say is that it's tough being a parent. However

I also want to offer a big thank you to the Christian community and to all here in Greymouth who have invested something of themselves in the forming of Rebekah. Tim Writes I once read a book called "Blessed Grieving" by Joan Guntzelman which was a book of services, meditations and stories to help people cope with loss. The book recognised that grief occurs with every loss in life, not just death, and helped people to come to terms with it. One key loss we have to face in life is ageing, as we become less physically able, more confused, dependant on others and so on. It is a real loss and is to be grieved over like any other as we seek to come to terms with it. I would recommend the book to you and especially to any you know who are struggling with ageing or other kinds of loss. REBEKAH'S LAST SUNDAY Rebekah Mora will be leaving after Church next Sunday to go to Wellington. Many have enjoyed having her amongst us in the singing group and in other ways over the last few years, and the Wardens decided it

would be nice to give her a going away gift from the parish in the form of a pair of suitcases. If you would like to contribute to this gift then please give your contribution to Nancy Holman who is arranging it or to the vicar. COBDEN CHURCH GARDEN We need someone who likes gardens to tidy up the garden between the Ark and the Cobden Church. See the Vicar. GAZA APPEAL We have been asked to advertise the attached emergency appeal for the Anglican Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. The current situation is extreme with little prospect of a cease fire in the immediate future. Bishop Suheil writes: “During the best of times they are stretched to their maximum meeting the medical needs of this populous community. Now, during the current military conflict with its heavy

toll on human life and material, the hospital faces even greater responsibilities and challenges. The result is growing strain on the hospital's resources. Every day since the beginning of military operations, the hospital has received 20-40 injured or wounded patients. A large proportion of them require hospitalisation and surgery. These patients are in addition to those with non-conflict-related illnesses. About one-fourth of the patients are children. Please pray for a resolution to this crisis that is acceptable to all. If you would like to give to the work of the Anglican Hospital in Gaza then please leave such giving in an envelope marked "Gaza Appeal" and put it into the collection plate next Sunday. Tim Writes As I write this it's about 12 hours to New Year's Eve. Typically this is a time to reflect on how the previous year has gone. What we've accomplished or not as the case may be. Often we will make resolutions with the best of intentions to improve ourselves, spend more time with family or spouses etc. However I have discovered a truth that intentions no matter how well intended will never be acted upon unless we do more than just resolve in our mind. A resolution usually involves change and change requires more energy than the status quo. It's about breaking ingrained habits and establishing new ones. And all of these things require more than just a momentary resolution which often reflects more a desire to change than a real decision to achieve it. For a resolution to succeed you have to sit down and map out a strategy. The old adage that "they who fail to plan, plan to fail" is still true. You need to work out how you are going to enact your resolution. What are you going to drop time wise. What changes will you

make to reinforce the new habit and so on. The reality is that we are all so busy that most of us live on a day to day basis to busy getting through life to actually look ahead and plot the course that might be best for us. So make your resolutions but also sit down and work out how you are going to make them happen. And remember that putting things off until tomorrow is not just a delay it is also time lost forever. Tomorrow actually never comes it is just an excuse to avoid what you may need to do today, be it time with your spouse, children, God etc. May 2009 be a year of real and positive and Godly change for you all. PLAYGROUND We have been granted $850 by the West Coast Community Trust for bark in the playground and we will raise the sides slightly. The bark should be here late January. Following that we will install some new play equipment and finish off a little bit of concreting and then the back area will be finished. Lawn Mowing Roster 4th Jan Tim Mora

DRAINAGE There was an issue with the church property stretching over two titles. This has now been resolved legally and hopefully we should see the work underway late January or early February. VICARAGE AND THE NEALE'S The Neale family will be in our vicarage probably up until the end of March when his training officially finishes. Steve is currently exploring ministry opportunities and if something comes up before that then they may move out sooner. Likewise if March finishes and they are still with us then they have the option of either renting the vicarage from us or moving into alternative accommodation which would leave us free to rent the vicarage to someone else. The rent from the vicarage would be used to reimburse Holy Trinity for 186 Main South Rd. We will keep everyone informed as developments occur. SYMPATHIES Our sympathies to Kevin Dash and extended family for the loss of Margaret at Christmas.

Tim Writes I have to say that I feel we had a very good Advent season. In Runanga we have a long established tradition of how we handle Advent Sundays and Christmas day, and once again it went well this year with good numbers, especially on Christmas day, of folk starting the day well by honouring the birth of Christ. In Cobden we are beginning to establish a new tradition of what we add to the Christmas tree each Sunday of Advent. I know many found it meaningful and given what we have learnt of the origin of the Christmas tree itself the adding of the gold and silver balls on the first Sunday of advent takes on a new and special meaning too. Christmas Carols at the Hilton was great this year with a larger backing group and some significant sharing of what folk do at Christmas to make it special for them. Christmas Eve also went well with video, drama, children's play and a special dance by Kristie Aynsley.

Finally Christmas Day with two parish services followed by a shared lunch at Cobden saw us joining together with some from the community for a time of eating and talking. Overall it was a very meaningful advent. BISHOP'S WALK The Bishop will be walking the bounds of the Diocese next year. JANUARY SERVICES Just a reminder that Nicky and I will be away for part of January but my father will be staying in our house for some of that time. On the 11th of January Robin Kingston will be preaching at both Cobden and Runanga, on the 18th Logan will be on deck at both locations and on the 25th it will be Wayne Lorimer at just Cobden. ORIGIN OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE Over the advent period I shared in many locations the story of the origin of the Christmas tree which most of us erect in our homes and other places over this time of year. It was a fascinating story packed full of symbolism so I thought I would share it here and thereby provide you with a written version. The tradition of the Christmas tree arose from the fir tree decorated with apples and representations of communion wafers used in the Paradise play. The paradise play was one of many religious dramas used to convey the Christian message in town squares from the 11th to 15th centuries in

Germany. The tree was the only prop on the stage and symbolised the tree from which Adam and Eve ate in the garden of Eden. The apples represented their fall from grace and the wafers Jesus' redemption. People influenced by this play began to erect a fir tree decorated with apples and biscuits in place of the wafers on Adam and Eve's Feast Day on the 24th of December in their homes. The candles possibly came from the custom of having a large Christ candle lit on Christmas eve along with smaller candles on a nearby wooden pyramid. Over time people dropped the pyramid and added the candles to the tree. Similarly other decorations like the star representing the star of Bethlehem, gifts under the tree from the wisemen and so on came to be incorporated into the tradition. The coloured balls we place on the tree today represent the apples, the lights represent the candles and so on. Moravians brought it to America 300 years ago and Prince Albert of Germany brought it to England when he married Queen Victoria 170 years ago, and so it

Her first love was her Lord Jesus Christ and she was not ashamed to share this faith with others and at times very strongly which upset some people! She and her husband

Canon Peter shared ministry together especially in the healing ministry of the Church. Her love of Peter and her family was very evident. Dorothy was a keen gardener her pride and joy being her orchids. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. Barry Smithson represented the Parish at her funeral in St. Thomas' Motueka on Monday. Canon Peter Swears sends his" warm love" to the parish. CHRISTMAS SERVICES We've got a great line-up of Christmas services. On the 23rd Dec at 8pm we'll be singing carols at Blackball in the Hilton. On Christmas Eve we have a family service at Cobden at 6:30pm followed by supper and carols in the rest homes for those who are keen. Then on Christmas Day we have services at Runanga at 8am and Cobden at 9:30pm followed by a shared Christmas lunch at Cobden for those want to join us. Just touch base with Nancy Holman if you want to be a part of the Christmas lunch. Lawn Mowing Roster 21st Dec Tim Mora

Tim Writes Last Sunday we talked about the persecuted church, our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering for their faith overseas. We also looked at the different ways in which we could support them through prayer, being informed, supporting mission agencies who support them, letter writing campaigns and so on. We especially encouraged folk to make prayer for the persecuted church part of their daily devotions. To that end you have been given a copy of the Barnabas Fund prayer diary with your newsletter. If you have no other method of praying for the persecuted church then can I encourage you to use this. If you find it helpful then can I also encourage you to contact the Barnabas Fund and ask to receive it regularly. Their contact details are as follows. Barnabas Fund NZ 14A View Road Mt. Tim Writes Ten years is a long time in youth work given the average tenure is 18 months. Next weekend Nicky & I, and the team, celebrate and give thanks to God for ten years of youth ministry in this town. The ministry has touched the lives of hundreds of young people and they've touched our lives as well. OPEN DOORS VISIT A big thank you to Paul Christie of Open Doors and his informative videos about the persecution the church is facing around the world. His coming fitted in perfectly with our theme this Sunday where we will be looking at and praying for the persecuted church. We will also be placing white angels on the tree with prayers for the suffering church overseas. NEW TEAPOTS AT COBDEN Because of the health issue with aluminium teapots exacerbated by the regularity of use at Cobden we have replaced the two aluminium pots with

stainless steels ones. We have sent one of the aluminium teapots to "The Shed" which because of more casual use will not be a problem healthwise. TEAR FUND- GIFT FOR LIFE Last day today or if Eric's really generous maybe tomorrow to get your Tear Fund "Gift For Life" form in. Gift for Life" is a way of supporting the needy through buying needed items like a goat, pig, education, start-up loan etc., instead of just giving money. Our tradition here is to fund various items as individuals and families and to place the gift certificates on the Cobden Christmas tree for reading out on Christmas Eve. Make cheques out to "Tear Fund" please. ADVENT SERVICES Last year we initiated a series of Advent traditions for Cobden revolving

around various set items we placed upon the Christmas tree. This year it becomes a tradition as we repeat the exercise for the first time. Tradition can be very powerful in that our energy can be directed into the familiar rather than into the novel. Traditions are expected and can therefore be looked forward to. So can I encourage you to allow our new traditions to become a way of making Christmas more meaningful. Today the theme is hope. Tim Writes During last week some of the ministers of the town met with Colin and Grace Shaw who are part of a ministry that is cataloguing the way in which local churches in communities have begun to work together. Colin and Grace's role is very much to encourage this as they strongly believe that unity within the body of Christ locally is a key to seeing revival and even more fruitful ministry. Here in Greymouth there is a high degree of unity. The ministers respect each other as colleagues, individual Christians often see themselves as part of one big body and there are good working relationships on a number of projects. However we can't rest on our laurels and while what we currently have is a good foundation I believe there is much more that could be done to leverage our unity. So pray for the minister's association as they begin to reflect on this. Tim Writes Sometimes the way things work out amazes me. A favourite Psalm of mine is Psalm 37:4 "Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." It's a Psalm that speaks to me of how all things work together for good for those who truly the Lord. In other words when you are in a right relationship with God and genuinely delight in being in that place and truly give God lordship of your life then things just seem to happen for you, often without even asking for them directly in prayer. I have many examples of this from the past but I also have a very recent one I want to share with you. For years we have struggled with ground water seepage in "The Shed" and have done many things to improve the drainage and reduce the problem to reasonable effect but we've never ever fully solved it. A better solution was concreting a long strip of open soil next to "The Shed" to stop soakage and to direct the run off better, and only last week I was

discussing this with Nicky. Well last Tuesday I was helping a mate do some concreting and at the end of the job there was still about half a metre of concrete in the truck which would have been just washed out back at the yard. Struck with a sudden thought I asked if the driver could call in past "The Shed" on the way back to the yard and I could off load it. Well to cut along story short that's exactly what happened and the twelve barrows of concrete was exactly what I needed at this stage. Praise the Lord, God is good.

The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 2nd November 2008 Theme for this Sunday: Creation Part III Readings: Heb 1:1-14, John 2:1-11 Theme for 9th November: The Bridegroom is Here (Runanga) Henk Stengs (Cobden) Readings: Psalm 63, 1 Thess 4:13-18, Matt 25:1-13 (Runanga) Henk Stengs (Cobden)

Tim Writes I felt last Sunday was a very special time as we talked about healing and had opportunity for prayer both for people present and for those on our hearts. Please let me know about any answers to prayer from that Sunday for our encouragement. This Sunday we will be looking at the final clip on creation before getting back to Luke. It's been a very worthwhile series and I know many have been strengthened in their faith because of it. HELP WANTED If you have access to stories, photos or any other info relating to the early churches in the Nelson Diocese, we would love to hear from you. We are working on the development of a DVD to record the events of the 150th celebrations as well as tell the story of how it all began. We are also looking for people who have a story to tell about how the church has significantly impacted their lives, bringing them to a saving faith in Jesus. If you have

material, or ideas about something that may merit inclusion, please contact Rachel Stokes on 03 541 9598 or email: villagenews@ts.co.nz CORIN FAMILY UPDATE The Corin family now have their visas and have actually left the country. By now they will be in the Central Asian country they will be working in for the next two and a half years. Pray that Catherine's health improves and that they will have a very effective ministry. MEN'S HEALTH DAY The PHO have organised two health meetings at the Trowbridge room on Friday 14th looking at men's health issues like prostrate cancer, cholesterol levels etc. Both meetings are free but places are limited so please register by phoning Sue-Ann or Amy on 768 6182. You can come at lunchtime from 12noon - 1:30pm or at 5:30pm. Food is being provided at no charge. Lawn Mowing Roster 26th Oct Tim Mora

TEAR FUND- GIFT FOR LIFE The Tear Fund "Gift For Life" forms are out at the back of each church. "Gift for Life" is a way of supporting the needy through buying needed items like a goat, pig, education, start-up loan etc., instead of just giving money. Our tradition here is to fund various items as individuals and families and to place the gift certificates on the Cobden Christmas tree for reading out on Christmas Eve. Please take a form and hand into Eric or Nancy by Dec 7th with money. Make cheques out to "Tear Fund" please. WOMEN'S EVENT Christian Women Communicating Internationally are back in Greymouth.

Valma Rees will be speaking at the Salvation Army Hall Tues 4th of Nov at 7pm on the topic of "You Can Be Wonder Woman." This is a worthwhile event and I encourage all women in the parish to attend and be inspired. SHARING SHED MEETING On Thursday 6th November at the Cobden Church there will be a Sharing Shed meeting at 1pm. ELECTIONS AND VOTING Check out the Gotta Vote link at where www.focusonthefamily.co.nz, you'll find info on our MPs voting records etc. to help you choose the candidates who best line up with your beliefs, convictions and values.

The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 19th October 2008 Theme for this Sunday: Creation Part II Readings: Col 1:15-20, John 1:1-3 Theme for 26th October: St Luke's Day Readings: Luke 5:12-26, Mark 8:22-25

Tim Writes This week we show part two of the DVD series exploring the incredible wonder of God's creation and the way in which this demonstrates very clearly intelligent design in the complexity of life, natural laws and more. DVD's like these can be a very worthwhile witnessing tool as well as they can be easily lent to folk and provoke a lot of meaningful discussion. So don't be afraid to ask if you can borrow these materials. Next week we will remember St Luke and offer specific prayers for healing in our services on those days. There will be an opportunity for anointing with oil and to have prayer for those not able to be present. 40 DAYS OF PRAYER A very successful time of prayer was held last Saturday calling on God for an end to abortion in this country. Those who participated had a worthwhile time of prayer and discussion around this tragedy in our nation.

OKARITO TRIP SUCCESSFUL Those who went down to Okarito had on the whole a pretty good time. A reasonable amount of whitebait were caught but only one trout sadly. The weather was patchy which meant that our photographers struggled a little but overall the good food, companionship and games meant that the weekend was a great success. Thanks to Henk and all those who helped make the time possible. MANNA CATALOGUES We have some copies of the latest Manna catalogue at the back of the churches. Lot's of very enticing books, DVD's, CD's etc. to tempt you. Feel free to take one. TRUSTPOWER AWARDS Congratulations are in order for the Youth Group which on Tuesday night won the supreme place in the recent Trustpower awards. This means Nicky and I go to Palmerston North in March next year to represent the Grey District. Well done to all the volunteers who helped make this possible. Lawn Mowing Roster 26th Oct Tim Mora

Everyone in the Parish is welcome to pop along and support Josie on this big day. WORD FOR TODAY The Word for Today devotional for Nov-Jan has arrived and copies are at the back of each church. Please feel free to take one and if you can please drop a $1 or $2 into the plate to help cover the cost that would be great.

SHARED LUNCH & BIRTHDAY'S Today we celebrate Eily Pike and Maisie Friend's 93rd birthdays. There will be a cake, some singing, posies and we will cap it all off with a shared BBQ lunch. WOMEN'S EVENT Christian Women Communicating Internationally are back in Greymouth on their annual tour. Tim Writes We had a very good vestry retreat last Saturday. We spent time getting to know each other in more detail, discussed leadership styles and personality types and how that worked out at vestry meetings, began to brainstorm just a little for the future and finally we finished with some corporate prayer before having lunch together. It was a very good morning marked by honesty and a sense of togetherness as we looked to the future of the parish. Every October the church worldwide remembers Luke the physician and often uses the time for a healing service. This year we will remember St Luke on Oct 26th and offer specific prayers for healing in the services on those days. 40 DAYS OF PRAYER From the 10th of October to the 18th of November there will be a prayer vigil around New Zealand calling on God for an end to abortion in this country. In

our parish we will set aside Sat 11th for an hour at lunchtime for people to come and pray around this area for as long as they wish from 12noon to 1pm. Sunday 5th October 2008 Theme for this Sunday: Video Readings: Video Theme for 12th October: The Lord's Wedding Feast (Runanga) Eric Holman (Cobden) Readings: Isaiah 25:6-10, Phil 4:12-14. 19-20, Matt 22:1-14, 7-36 (Runanga) Eric Holman (Cobden)

Tim Writes I was pleased at the number of people making efforts to work out their and their spouse's love language and to then apply it. Practice, as they say, makes perfect so can I encourage you to keep up the good work. Don't give up. Remember the languages; Words of affirmation, gift giving, quality time, acts of service and touch and then once again can I encourage you take 10min and do one thing this week that will meet your spouses love language. Synod has come and gone and was a significant time. Key items on the agenda included GAFCON and how we handle and help struggling parishes. GAFCON was the conference in Jerusalem where Anglican Bishops and leaders representing 55 out of the 70 million Anglicans in the world gathered to take a stand on orthodoxy and to say this far and no more to liberal Bishops and their practices which include the

ordaining of homosexual bishops, denying the divinity of Christ, his being the only way to be saved and more. Nelson Diocese took a strong stand on this by agreeing in principle to GAFCON's statements. So keep the wider church in your prayers. 40 DAYS OF PRAYER From the 10th of October to the 18th of November there will be a prayer vigil around New Zealand calling on God for an end to abortion in this country. Tim Writes Please continue to pray for the Baptist church. without going into details a decision was reached two weeks ago to dismiss their pastor. Right now the Pastor and his family, the elders and all the members of the congregation need our prayers as they work through this situation. Pray that people will seek full understanding before making decisions, that there would be genuine efforts towards healing, forgiveness and reconciliation, and that the wider Christian community in the town would not end up being drawn into what's happened but would remain prayerfully supportive of all attempts towards reconciliation. By the time you read this the painters should have painted the vicarage roof. All that remains is for a new sign to be made and two fences to be repaired. SYNOD NEXT WEEK Synod is coming up next week and it will be a significant time given the unrest with the Anglican Communion.

Tim Writes Last weekend was a very special time with Robin and Marge getting married in a light but meaningful ceremony. We continue to wish them all the best as they begin their new life together. It was also great to have a number of well known clergy and families with us on Sunday. Alan and Chris Cummins and Mark and Pip Chamberlain. Two very special couples who hold special places in many of our hearts. It was also quite a moving time as couples who hadn't been able to be with us last weekend were able to come forward for a marriage blessing including the aforementioned clergy couples. FOOD PARCELS We have some more food parcels sitting in the church. These are for families both inside and outside the church that people may be aware of

who are in need. If you know of someone in that situation then please get in touch with the vicar or one of the wardens for permission to uplift a box or two. LATEST JUST LIVING The latest "Just Living" insert from Anglican Social Justice Commission is at the back of the Churches. There are some very interesting articles in the inserts on energy usage, community gardens and the economy. Worth a read. DRAINAGE The Church like many of you is having to arrange for separation of services for the properties we own in Cobden. Currently we have submitted our consents and have a drain layer who has volunteered his services. We are now just waiting on the go ahead.

Tim Writes Last Sunday was very special and a number of people have commented to me about how meaningful the service was to them, especially at Cobden as couples renewed their marriage vows. it is pretty clear that marriage is an institution under threat in our society and one that is maligned often. Yet every statistical and social indicator I have looked at demonstrates powerfully that marriage is by far the best model for adult relationships, for raising children, and in general is the best place to be if you want to be healthy, wealthy and happy. it would seem that people value individuality over the collective good and as a result much of our society is suffering the consequences. My hope from last Sunday is that you will stand tall and say "I am proud and glad to be married." That you're not tied into some old fashioned, past it's use by date institution but instead have made a very wise choice. I also hope that you now feel that you

have some information and ammunition to back up that claim.

Tim Writes It's been a full week with lots happening. The repairs on the Cobden property are almost complete and in many ways we have come out better off with a number of things now in better condition than they were before the storm. Tim Writes On Wednesday a wind storm ripped through Cobden and elsewhere causing a mass of destruction that included some of our church property. The Cobden vicarage lost half its roof, five trees, parts of five fences, a garden shed, log fire flu, hotwater cylinder overflow pipe, electricity, and phone. The church lost its sign, two windows, two skylights, guttering, downpipes, power and got a hole in the wall. The garage has some dented walls and St Thomas' had one sheet of iron lifted. Since then we have been in touch with insurance assessors and tradespeople and every aspect of damage is now scheduled for repair. However what impressed me more was the bunch of volunteers who answered the call to arms on the Thursday and helped remove the rubbish and tidy up the trees and grounds. Apart from the damage to the buildings and some sawdust you would

almost never know we had been hit. It was a great effort and I and the parish are very grateful. We are also very grateful to the efforts of the fire service who put tarpaulins on our roof and to those who worked so hard to restore power, phone and took away the debris from the storm. It truly showed something about the strength of the Coast's community spirit. Well done everyone and thank you. We've also received messages of support over the disaster from Rodney Dunlop, the Gribbles and the Button's

Tim Writes I have been very encouraged by the many answers to prayer that people have been experiencing in the Parish of late. It shows an increased sensitivity to the Holy Spirit in our praying, and an awareness that God desires to be involved in bringing about change in people's lives and situations. Personally I was very encouraged by Wayne Dalzell's account of the vision of Christ he received the Sunday before his trip to Christchurch hospital. God was saying very strongly that he was going to be with Wayne throughout that time away. and he was. As Nicky Gumbel notes in the Alpha course not all our prayers are answered but far more are answered than if we never prayed. PARISH CONCERT On August the 9th we're going to be holding our mid-winter social. It will be a Parish Concert with a pot luck dessert. Henk Stengs will MC and

there will be a clipboard at the back of Cobden church for items. Runanga and Blackball folk can ring Henk direct on 768-7741. So don't be shy, have a go. We're looking for songs, dances, skits, instrumentals, jokes whatever to entertain us on the night. You can enter more than one item and you could go solo, duet, as a group, a family etc. It's going to be a great night. So invite a friend as well. FOOD PARCELS We have a new batch of food parcels to give away to families in need. See Tim or one of the Wardens if you or someone you know has a need for one. PIZZA DAY THANK YOU A big thank you to all those who helped out on Friday and Saturday. It was a great day and all those hands helped make light of the work. SHARING YOUR FAITH Starting next week on Wed evening at 7:30pm and for the next three weeks following we'll be meeting in the Cobden church to take part in a series on "Sharing your Faith." It will include the Biblical mandate, the reasons we struggle but most importantly it will include two weeks on actual methods. You will learn how to prepare and share a testimony, lead someone in a prayer of salvation and more. We would like everyone to come. The Wed night home group leaders about cancelling their groups for those four

weeks and joining us. The dates are August 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th. See you there. ALPHA MARRIAGE COURSE We have just purchased via the Vicar's Discretionary account the Alpha Marriage Course. This is a powerful tool for strengthening marriages and relationships and we are looking forward to offering the course in the near future. POLICE CHECKS The Police Checks for those involved in children's and young person's ministry as well as pastoral ministry have to be renewed every five years. There are forms at the back of Cobden church for those involved in those ministries to pick up, fill in and get back to me by the end of August.

The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 27th July 2008 Theme for this Sunday: New Wineskins Readings: Gal 5:13-23, Joel 2:28-29, Luke 5:27-39 Theme for 3rd August: The Sabbath and Legalism Readings: Rom 14:1-15:1, Luke 6:1-11

Tim Writes As many of you will know Bishop Richard is at Lambeth Palace in London for the 10 yearly gathering of Bishops from around the world. It is a gathering filled with tension over the increasing divide between orthodoxy and liberalism. Orthodoxy is defined as those who hold to the truth of the doctrines expressed in the historical Nicene and Apostolic creeds, Liberalism does not. The divide has been brought to a head by the ordination of Gene Robinson a self-declared homosexual in America. This is no small issue and there is a strong possibility that it could lead to an eventual split in the church. Personally, unless there is genuine repentance in the liberal church that leads to clear action and in reality true conversion, I think such a split will be inevitable and in reality a good thing for the church long term. So please pray for Lambeth and for Bishop Richard. PARISH CONCERT On August the 9th we're going to be holding our mid-winter social. It will be

a Parish Concert with a pot luck dessert. Henk Stengs will MC and there will be a clipboard at the back of Cobden church for items. INTERCESSORS TRAINING For those who missed the intercessors training there will be a repeat on the 23rd of August from 1-2pm at Cobden church. Tim Writes This week is Bible Sunday and all around the country Churches are celebrating the gift of the Bible and looking at the Bible in their services. In our parish we will be handing out envelopes for the Bible Society appeal. We will also be making available a pamphlet with a Bible Reading planner which may be a good way of kick starting Bible reading for those who haven't yet got into the habit. As the term gets underway again please remember those areas of ministry involving youth and children. Please pray for Bible in Schools at Runanga and Cobden, Shirley Smith's Friendship Kids, Sunday School at Runanga and Cobden and the wider youth ministries at the Salvation Army and The Shed. The Herald To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Sunday 13th July 2008 Theme for this Sunday: Christ the Sower (Runanga) Christ Divine (Cobden) Readings: Isaiah 55:10-11, Rom 8:18-23, Matt 13:1-23 (Runanga) John 20:19-31, Luke 5:17-26 (Cobden) Theme for 20th July: Bible Sunday Readings: 2 Tim 3:14-17, John 20:26-31

Tim Writes Christianity is not just a Sunday thing as we all know but sometimes the way we organise ourselves can kind of reflect that. This is why I really enjoy our sharing time at Cobden on Sunday mornings as it both raises the expectation that God is at work during the week and it also gives people an opportunity to share what God has been doing in their lives. Speaking up though can be a bit daunting and sometimes we feel we have nothing to share but can I encourage everyone that you probably do have something to share. It might not be a dramatic answer to prayer. It might simply be a scripture verse that spoke to you from your Bible readings during the week, it might be something you read in your devotional material. It might be an answer to prayer. It might be someone close coming to faith. It might be the way you were able to be of help or comfort to someone in a spot of trouble. So don't be afraid to speak up

on Sunday mornings. We're all keen to hear how God has been at work in your life. PARISH CONCERT On August the 9th we're going to be holding our mid-winter social. Tim Writes One of the areas we struggle in as Christians is with sharing our faith. We know we should but somehow it feels like either we're being pushy or that we simply don't know how to do it in the first place. We had a good discussion over this topic at our last vestry meeting and we decided that we will be intentional about it. So for four weeks on Wed evenings from 7:30pm in the Cobden church we'll be running a series on "Sharing your Faith." It will include the Biblical mandate, the reasons we struggle but most importantly it will include two weeks on actual methods. You will learn how to prepare and share a testimony, lead someone in a prayer of salvation and more. Tim Writes It is with real sadness that I let you know of the passing of Jan Munn last Monday from a stroke. Our prayers are with Roy for strength and comfort who was a significant member of our parish for many years. The funeral will be on Monday 30th June at 11am in Holy Trinity Church. Marge Tefft is now in temporary residence in the Holy Trinity vicarage. In time she and Robin will build their own house and take up residence there. Marge would like to express her deep appreciation for all the expressions of love, support and friendship she received from our parish while she was in residence at our vicarage. She felt her time there was very special and a real blessing to her. So thank you to everyone who helped to make her stay a pleasant one of fond memories. Finally, as most of you will be aware, the concert with Steve Apirana and Derek Lind had to be cancelled to the disappointment of many. They could not get over either of the passes.

Tim Writes Nicky and I are starting something new in line with the move from investing time and energy into the parish infrastructure to that of the people. We have started this month having one or two couples or individuals around for lunch after church as a way of deepening existing relationships and getting to know people. Last Sunday Josie and Garry, and Carolyn and Brian joined us for a light lunch followed by a pleasant afternoon of conversation and socialising. So watch out, you may find yourself being approached for a lunchtime invitation sometime in the near future. It's a long term initiative because with the Parish Lunch on the last Sunday of the month and Blackball on the second Sunday there's only two Sundays a month we can use. NEW PHONE NUMBER The old parish phone number of 768 7667 has been disconnected. We had kept it for a while with a diversion to Tim and Nicky's home number but with Marge moving out and Stephen

wanting to keep his old number it seemed an appropriate time to finally let it go. So if you have been ringing 768 7667 or have it on speed dial or something like that you will need to alter it to Tim and Nicky's home number 768 9605. SUCCESSFUL TRAINING We've run a number of training sessions of late to up-skill people in their various roles on Sunday mornings. Last Saturday we had Claire Holley lead us in a basic counselling skills workshop for those involved in prayer ministry. Many commented to me on how helpful they found it. Then on Tuesday we ran a training session on the sound desk and the use of the new computer to record sermons. It was a very enjoyable as well as instructive time. Finally there was a session for intercessors on Sat but it occurred after this newsletter went to print so I cannot comment on how it went. So thanks to those who led the training and for those who turned up. It was much appreciated. Lawn Mowing Roster 15th June Tim Mora

LIONS You'll see that on Thursday that the Lion's Changeover night is listed. This is because I have decided to join the Lions Club of Greymouth as a way of being more involved in the community. I know many of the members anyway and it seemed like an appropriate thing to be involved in. STEVE APIRANA AND DEREK LIND Are coming to Greymouth. Tues 24th June 7.30pm, Holy Trinity Centre. Steve and Derek - great mates and entertainers - have for many years thrilled audiences with concerts that are full of laughs, great music and fun for the whole family. "Its inevitable" that

you and your friends will have a memorable time. Don't miss it !! The concerts are free but donations will be accepted for TEAR Fund's ministry. PRAYER MEETINGS AND REVIVAL People often pray for revival wanting to see God's Spirit poured out in power and people coming to faith in their droves. Sadly they will be disappointed because history has shown that community revival always begins with personal revival. It has to start with the church and secondly because it is always undergirded with prayer. The first sign of revival will always be an increase in numbers at the church prayer meeting. See you Thursday!

Tim Writes A telling judgement from the High Court was delivered this week, finding that the Abortion Supervisory Committee (ASC) has "misinterpreted its' functions and powers under the abortion law," and that "there is reason to doubt the lawfulness of many abortions" in New Zealand. Right to Life, a pro-life charity, has taken the ASC to Court alleging they have been failing to fulfil their duties in ensuring the law is interpreted as intended. Under New Zealand law an abortion is illegal unless it takes place with the authorisation of two certifying consultants. The most commonly cited ground is that the pregnancy would result in a serious risk to the mental health of the mother. In 2006 17,732 abortions, 98.9 percent of all abortions, were performed on this ground. Justice Miller, the Judge hearing the case, agreed that at the moment in New Zealand we seem to effectively have abortion on demand, with figures showing that some certifying consultants decline very few

or no abortions whatsoever. Justice Miller held that our abortion laws show that "the unborn child has a claim on the conscience of the community... and that our abortion laws are being abused, and inadequately supervised." "The abortion law certainly asserts a state interest in protecting the unborn child, and not merely an interest in ensuring that women may have safe and legal abortions." This is a landmark decision and while not denying there are some valid grounds for abortion it would certainly appear that in New Zealand we have abortion on demand at present. Hopefully this judgement will pave the way for a review of our current abortion laws. LAST CHANCE PROMISE KEEPERS Promise Keepers is coming on the 15-17th August. This is a great men's weekend.
