Volume 16, Number 1

The Pioneers are ready to lead the conference once again With the beginning of swim season fast approaching, the dogs and ducks have prepared with pre-season swimming, diving, water polo and dryland conditioning at the Russell K. Osgood pool. While the men intend to maintain a stronghold on the Midwest Conference championship title (shooting for 12 in a row in 2013), the women are driven by a mission to take back the conference title after finishing second last season (after a 13 year consecutive conference title run). With the National Championship being held in Shenandoah, TX in March the dogs and ducks are aiming to send a group of men and women to make a mark on the national scene. The Pioneers bring in a total of 17 women and 11 men in the incoming first year class. With this young group along with some determined and proven veterans, the Pioneers have set their sites on obtaining these goals.

& diving-specific dryland conditioning program that will add significant strength and power to our athletes. Our competition schedule will provide two multi-day invitationals hosted at our facility that will include some of the best regional Division 3 teams and top Division 2 and NAIA schools. The annual winter training trip will begin just after New Year’s Day when the team will head to Naples, Florida for a 12 day session of focused training as well as competition against an east coast team. Once we return from Florida some will be in their final push to the end of the season and the Midwest Conference Championships. For others there will be a final training phase for the Division III National Championships. Come see us compete throughout the season. The Pioneers would love your support. 4 Olympic Trialists from Grinnell College “It’s really every coach’s dream. At the DIII level it is not very common to have athletes at that level, so we’re very fortunate to have all of these people in the Trials.” said Coach Hurley regarding Claire Forrest `14 and Claire Williams `14 competing at the Paralympic Swimming Trials, Michael Brus `13 competing at the Olympic Swimming Trials, and Deidre Freeman (Grinnell Diving Coach) competing at the Olympic Diving Trials. This rare occurrence has positioned their story prominently on the NCAA.com Division III swimming page all summer. Michael placed 77th of 109 entries in the 200 backstroke in Omaha. Deidre teamed up with Veronica Rydze to place fourth in the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard event. She also took 18th in the 3-meter springboard competition. Claire Williams set a world record in the 200 meter Butterfly S9 category at trials. She took fourth in the 100 meter backstroke which ranked her 21 in the world and she took fourth in the 100-meter butterfly ranking her twelfth in the world. Claire Forrest placed seventh in the 100 meter backstroke S6 category, the 34th fastest time in the world. She also took 10th place in the 50 meter freestyle, which is 39th in the world.
