5 Delta, a global leader in power management and smart green solutions, has officially opened its new Research and Development (R&D) center in Soest, Germany, significantly expanding its innovation capabilities in high-efficiency power solutions for AI and HighPerformance Computing (HPC) data centers, as well as for electric mobility, including 800 VDC server power supplies and 4-in-1 EV power systems. With the rapid increase in power density in AI infrastructure, testing requirements are becoming significantly more complex, requiring expanded and highly specialized laboratory environments. Therefore, this green facility at Soest, designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, comprises 7,500 square meters of advanced R&D laboratory space and 2,500 square meters of office space to accommodate up to 250 talents. To further sharpen and holistically align its global sales activities with customers and markets, Phoenix Contact is expanding its Group Executive Board with the newly established role of Chief Sales Officer (CSO). Threshold teaching without need for manual adjustments

Alva Industries announced the launch of SlimTorq™ STM-19035, a new larger size in its SlimTorq™ frameless, slotless motor portfolio. The STM-190-35 expands the STM range with increased torque capability and precision, enabling demanding direct-drive applications where performance, compactness, and design flexibility are critical.The STM-190-35 is manufactured using Alva's patented FiberPrinting™ technology, delivering ironless, slotless windings with high copper fill factor and zero cogging. The motor is available with multiple winding options, different terminal block designs, and optional temperature sensors and Hall sensors, supporting precise control and system-level optimization. The STM-190-35 is designed for high-precision direct-drive systems such as electro-optical platforms, gimbals, robotics, and other motion-critical applications.

With a favorable inner-to-outer diameter ratio and compact axial length, the motor supports space-efficient system designs without compromising torque density or control performance. To support system-level design and evaluation, the STM-190-35 is fully supported in Alva's TorqStudio design and simulation platform.

TorqStudio allows engineers to evaluate motor performance, explore winding options, and optimize motor selection early in the design process based on application-specific requirements.

Panasonic Industry Europe is introducing the new FX 250 digital fiber sensor designed to support users in their daily working routines as effectively as possible. The sensor offers a large, high contrast OLED display providing excellent readability and shows not only numerical values, but also fully written text.

This makes menu navigation intuitive and significantly reduces the risk of operating errors. As a result, settings can be checked and adjusted quickly even from a distance, helping reduce set up time and machine downtime. A particularly practical feature is the new two step limit teaching, which no longer requires manual adjustment of the emitted light. By simply pressing a button twice, the sensor reliably learns the switching threshold—even under challenging lighting conditions such as reflections or incident light saturation. This makes machine setup considerably faster and ensures stable detection of shiny, transparent, or very small components, providing reliable performance even in demanding industrial environments. The FX 250 also stands out with its extremely compact design. Its newly engineered cover requires an opening radius of only 30 millimeters, enabling installation in very restricted spaces and simplifying maintenance without the need to reposition surrounding components.

SMART CONDITION MONITORING MADE EASY

COMPACT AND PRECISE 3D LASER SCANNER

Monitoring status of devices without expert knowledge

4K resolution with the option of in-unit data processing

Smart condition monitoring based on vibration measurement makes it easier than ever to detect damage to centrifugal pumps, fans and electric motors at the earliest stages.

This helps to prevent machine failures and enables cost-effective, demand-based maintenance planning. With the new features of moneo Asset Health, part of the moneo IIoT platform by ifm this type of condition monitoring can be implemented easily and on a scalable basis. No expert knowledge of vibration analysis is required. The system works seamlessly with ifm's IO-Link-based VVB condition monitoring sensors, and the set-up of Asset Health is extremely simple. With just a few clicks, users can configure monitoring for a target machine such as a centrifugal pump, fan or motor. Like all features in moneo, Asset Health is also designed as a no-code solution, allowing users to set up and operate the system without any programming knowledge. Unlike conventional condition monitoring solutions, Asset Health does not simply detect a rising trend or anomaly; it also identifies the underlying cause of the fault. This is done automatically, without any complex threshold settings, opening up a wide range of possibilities: as soon as a problem is detected, the software automatically generates maintenance tickets detailing the respective damage pattern, the cause and a specific repair recommendation.

Micro Epsilon's scanCONTROL 8500 laser scanner is possibly the smallest SMART 3D laser scanner in its class with 4K resolution, the series combines measurement performance with minimum space requirements, creating the best conditions for high-precision inline measurement tasks in modern production environments. A key advantage is the integrated 3D data processing directly in the sensor. In addition to 2D evaluation, measured values can also be fully calculated within the sensor from 3D data and transmitted directly to a controller via Industrial Ethernet. Alternatively, calibrated 3D point clouds or 2D profile data can be output for external processing. Thanks to their exceptionally compact design, the laser scanners offer a high degree of integration freedom. They are up to 4.8 times more compact than comparable systems and are therefore much easier to integrate into machines, systems and retrofit concepts. The new 4K sensor matrix with up to 4,224 measuring points per profile and a profile frequency of up to 10 kHz and up to 25 million points per second ensure high measurement accuracy. Another highlight is the innovative Green Laser Technology. It combines the strengths of red and blue lasers and thus enables shorter exposure times, reduced noise and a lower influence of ambient light. The scanCONTROL 8500 is available in 25, 50 and 100 mm measuring ranges.

For efficient and easy handling of safety gate system

High performance for logistics in compact design

Pilz has expanded its IO-Link Safety System with the control unit PITgatebox IOLS. This means that plant and machinery can be controlled not only safely, but with greater ease and efficiency.

PITgatebox IOLS transmits diagnostic data such as gate status and operating state of the safety gate systems directly to the plant controller in real-time, via IO-Link Safety Master. Users benefit from reduced maintenance and operating costs, as well as more efficient safety gate systems. As an open, standardised communication protocol, IO-Link Safety makes it easier to both commission and maintain plants. Intelligent diagnostic functions also enable early, centralised fault detection. This leads to higher availability and reduced downtimes. Users can operate the PITgatebox IOLS as a stand-alone device or in conjunction with other safety switches, with and without guard locking. Thanks to IO-Link Safety, the configuration work needed for such applications is standardised and significantly reduced. What's more, the point-to-point connection simplifies wiring. The control unit PITgatebox IOLS combines pushbuttons, key switches and E-STOP pushbuttons and is also individually configurable.

The FAULHABER DualGear drive system has been specifically designed for applications in conveyor belts as well as in compact wheel drives of autonomous logistics systems. Especially in intralogistics environments where space is limited, the system offers a high-performance and economical solution. A particular advantage is its versatility: Two synchronous movements can be realized with one drive. This reduces integration effort significantly, while at the same time optimizing installation space and system costs.

The new drive system combines two high-performance partners in a compact unit: the powerful and dynamic brushless 32 mm motor from the BX4 family and two diameter-compliant mounted, robust metal planetary gearheads from the GPT series at both ends of the motor. The BX4 base motor for the DualGear combination is available in two motor lengths with 42 mm and 68 mm. This allows the drive system to be flexibly adapted to different perfo rmance and installation space requirements. Hall sensors with sine/cosine output signals enable precise detection of the rotor position for exact commutation and positioning. In combination with an external motion controller, accurate positioning movement is possible, resulting in a drive system that combines torque and maximum accuracy with a compact design.

PROFILE RAIL GUIDES IN OPTIMIZED DESIGN

Rodriguez offers the BRXH series of profile rail guides in an optimized design. The update comprises three key points: an enhanced lubrication concept, a new sealing system, and greater precision. This makes processes even safer while maintaining system compatibility. The guide carriages now have additional lubrication points, which distribute the lubricant better and more evenly within the recirculating ball unit. The systems are delivered pre-lubricated. When lubricating from above, an adapter ensures targeted distribution in the carriage. A central element of the redesign is the new sealing system. Double lip seals on the front and double lip seals on the sides are used as standard, providing effective protection against particles and contamination. The previous standard accuracy N is no longer available. Instead, class H becomes the new standard. The tolerances for height and width have been reduced by around 50 percent compared to the previous N version. Additional accuracy classes are available on request. In addition, the number of ground carriage surfaces has been increased from two to three. Some of the proven features remain unchanged, including the design with four rows of balls arranged in an X with a 45° contact angle to accept loads in all main directions, coating options, and availability in lengths of up to 3,900 mm.

Beckhoff's economy drive system is a coordinated platform of servomotors, servo drives, and variable frequency drives for compact, cost-efficient machine concepts.

The AX1000 economy servo drive has been extended to include an additional three-phase variant rated at 12 A. It now covers the rated current range from 3.4 to 12 A, while in the single-phase range it is available with currents from 1.65 to 6.9 A. One notable aspect is the high packing density: The power supply, DC link capacitors, and braking circuit are fully integrated, despite the extremely compact dimensions. The devices can be installed next to each other in the control cabinet without minimum distances having to be maintained between the drives.

The AF1000 economy variable frequency drive is also available in a new three-phase variant rated at 5.5 kW, providing a cost-optimized solution for basic drive applications such as conveyor systems, pumps, or fans. The series covers the power range with singlephase supply from 0.37 to 1.5 kW, as well as with three-phase supply from 0.75 to 5.5 kW. It offers a scalable solution for a wide range of applications, not only with the single-axis devices typical of this segment, but also with the very cost-efficient double-axis devices. Beckhoff is also able to supply suitable accessories including external braking resistors and mains filters.

Separation of Concerns: Breaking Free of the Limitations of Traditional Architectures As digital transformation increases demand for data from automation systems – driven by new digital innovations such as advanced analytics, AI and expanded connectivity – maintaining system integrity has become a challenge. ABB’s Luis Duran explores how the concept of “separation of concerns” protect the core of the automation system in a cyber-secure way, while enabling new digital value without compromising operational performance.

One of the major challenges faced by industries today is how to bring digital innovations to traditional Distributed Control Systems (DCS) without disrupting the delicate production processes and in a cost effective and agile manner. In a traditional architecture, core control functions and digital capabilities such as asset management and optimization are often tightly woven together, a design that has long ensured deterministic behaviour, reliability and safe operations.

As digital innovation accelerates, introducing new innovations on the digital side requires careful consideration, as changes must be validated to ensure they do not risk disrupting operations on the control side.

For plant operators managing continuously running processes, making changes or experimenting with new innovations on what are essentially live systems is not taken lightly. If a change in one area has unintended effects elsewhere, then it can risk causing downtime, and affect resilience plant-wide, and so validating any adjustments can take up large amounts of time and cost.

This is why attention is increasingly turning to the concept of “separation of concerns”.

This is a term widely used in IT, telecommunications, and finance, but is less wellknown in industrial automation discourse.

It involves dividing systems into distinct environments, with each optimized for a specific purpose or “concern”. Rather than

altering the trusted control environment, critical control tasks, digital applications and optimization tasks can operate in separate, yet connected, domains within the automation ecosystem.

A well-designed modern automation system with true separation of concerns allows for a digital environment where optimization and adjustment for each environment can be carried out more easily, without increasing risk to core operations. The benefits are faster innovation cycles, more robust safety and cybersecurity, and greater flexibility with more scope for optimization, while maintaining the robustness and reliability that traditional DCS architectures are designed to deliver.

Making modern automation systems more manageable Traditional automation architectures were typically designed to operate within a clearly defined operational environment, where core control functions, engineering tools, optimization applications, and digital services were closely integrated within a single system.

This approach has proven highly effective in delivering robustness, reliability and deterministic performance in demanding industrial settings.

As plants evolve and additional digital capabilities are introduced, new requirements and dependencies naturally emerge within these already sophisticated systems. Introducing new digital applications, applying software updates, or deploying a cybersecurity patches, may have knock-on effects on wider systems. This means extensive validation is often required to ensure that operational integrity is not compromised.

Compounding this is the fact that many plant environments are in constant operation, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Interruptions

outside of planned downtime are simply not realistic. Furthermore, digital applications are constantly evolving and require updates ever more frequently. Treating both the core control environment and the digital layer in the same way can slow down innovation, as operators look to reduce the risk of inadvertently disrupting wider systems.

Separation of concerns builds on the strengths of traditional automation architecture by preserving their robust, tightly integrated core while extending the architecture to better

By creating a clearer delineation between the core control environment and the digital environment, it helps manage complexity and improves maintainability through the decoupling of monitoring and optimization from the core system. This allows for incremental modernization to accelerate digital transformation initiatives, leverage open systems, and future-proof their operations, while maintaining the operational continuity of critical core control.

Updates to digital applications, which typically require more frequent intervention, can be managed within their own secure environment, reducing the risk of negatively impacting core control systems. While functionally separate, the two environments remain fundamentally connected, ensuring that insights and innovations developed in the digital environment can still be easily migrated and implemented into the control environment.

Continuous Firmware Monitoring Software Minimising cyber risks and ensuring firmware security throughout the entire product lifecycle

Continuous Analysis Instead of One-Time Reviews As part of a modern firmware monitoring approach, a product’s firmware is continuously monitored, not just analyzed once. The goal is to automatically detect emerging security vulnerabilities in software components and assess their impact on existing products.

First, a detailed analysis of the firmware is conducted to achieve this. This process identifies all the software components contained within the firmware and creates a structured software bill of materials (SBOM).

Next, the SBOM is continuously compared against global vulnerability databases. As soon as new security vulnerabilities are published, for example in an open-source library,

it can automatically be determined whether an affected product contains the vulnerable component.

14 explosion protection Hazardous Locations in Modern Automation: Why Proportionate Specification Matters It wasn’t too long ago that hazardous zones and production zones were reasonably well separated. The areas where explosive gases, vapors, or combustible dusts were present tended to stay in their own very specific environments, and the equipment operating in those areas was specified accordingly. Today, however, that distinction is less clear.

As automation spreads deeper into processing, handling and transport operations, motors are increasingly required to operate in spaces that sit on the edge of hazardous zones. In these environments, explosive gases or combustible dusts are not continuously present, but they may occur during abnormal conditions or for brief periods of time. The engineering challenge is no longer simply “hazardous or not”, but rather “how hazardous, and how often”?

Answering that question correctly can make the difference between a well-optimized design and an unnecessarily expensive, inefficient, and bulky one.

Understanding the zone In the ATEX and IECEx frameworks, hazardous areas are divided into zones. Zone 0 and Zone 20 represent the highest level of risk, where explosive gas or dust is present continuously or for long periods, while Zone 1 and Zone 21 apply where it is likely to occur during normal operation. In contrast, Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 22 (dust) apply where explosive atmospheres are not likely during normal operation and, if they do occur, will only exist for a short time.

The significance of this extends far beyond paperwork and has many practical ramifications.

For example, the explosion-proof motors designed for Zone 0 or Zone 1 are typically engineered to withstand and contain an internal explosion. Their housings are thick and heavy.

Flame paths are carefully designed to prevent ignition from propagating. Cable entry is typically via rigid conduit rather than standard connectors. These motors are robust, proven, and an essential part of making industrial operations possible in severe environments, but they are

Automation expands into gray areas One reason for historical over-specification is simple availability. Both supply and demand for purpose-designed servo motors for Zone 2 and Zone 22 applications have historically been limited, so when faced with regulatory scrutiny and liability concerns OEMs have

defaulted to the highest-rated solution available.

The need for motors tailored to these environments is growing as the nature of automation changes. Consider a robotic transport system moving unfinished assemblies from a welding cell to a paint spray booth. The booth environment may only occasionally present an explosive gas mixture, but any motor operating inside that space must comply with the appropriate hazardous location standard.

Similarly, in pharmaceutical manufacturing, servo-controlled gate valves meter fine powders with high precision. Under normal conditions the environment is controlled, but

also large, heavy and highly expensive.

As such, if a machine only needs to comply with Zone 2 or Zone 22, specifying a fully Zone 1-complient motor is excessive. It adds weight to moving axes, increases inertia, may complicate mechanical integration and drives up cost unnecessarily.

Designing for Zone 2 and Zone 22 For Zone 2 and Zone 22 environments, the objective is not to contain an explosion in the way that is required in more high-risk areas, but to reduce the likelihood of ignition under abnormal conditions. That distinction allows for a very different design philosophy.

Kollmorgen’s AKME series of servo motors was developed specifically for these applications. Rather than redesigning the motor as a flameproof enclosure, the approach builds on the established AKM servo platform and

applies targeted enhancements to meet the requirements for Zone 2 and Zone 22.

The design makes use of several key protection concepts. For gas environments in Zone 2, the motor employs increased safety and encapsulation. The windings are vacuum impregnated to isolate conductive components and reduce the risk of ignition sources, while the design meets the T4 temperature class requirement. In practice, gases may enter the motor, but the rotor surface temperature remains well below the ignition threshold.

For dust environments in Zone 22, protection is achieved through a sealed enclosure. The motors incorporate IP67-rated shaft sealing and connector sealing, exceeding the IP64 level required by the certification standard.

This ensures that dust cannot accumulate inside the motor and allows it to meet the T130 temperature classification for dust that may settle on the motor surface.

Because the motor is not required to withstand an internal explosion, it does not need thick-walled housings or flame paths. The result is a compact, lightweight solution that preserves the torque density, dynamic performance and mounting flexibility expected of a modern servo motor.

These are not traditional heavy industries typically associated with hazardous zones, such as mining or petrochemicals. They are high-precision, high-value production environments that increasingly depend on servo technology.

As a result, more machines now operate in the transitional space between conventional automation and classified hazardous areas.

The specification approach must evolve accordingly.

A measured approach to safety It is important to note that adopting a more measured response to motor specification does not diminish the importance of safety.

On the contrary, increasing awareness of combustible dust and gas hazards have improved industry standards significantly. The goal is not to reduce protection, but to apply it intelligently.

Hazardous location classification exists precisely to enable proportionate design. When engineers understand the nature, frequency and duration of the hazard, they can select equipment that provides the required level of protection without introducing unnecessary compromise.

As automation continues to expand into food production, pharmaceutical processing, advanced coatings and other dust- and gassensitive environments, this middle ground between standard industrial servo motors and fully explosion-proof designs will become more important.

The challenge for designers is to resist the instinct to default to the highest rating and instead align specifications with real-world risk. By doing so, they can achieve compliant, efficient, and mechanically optimized systems that reflect both engineering rigor and practical judgment.

In modern factory automation, safety and performance are not opposing goals. Indeed, with the right approach to hazardous location specification, they instead reinforce each other.

The system determines the moisture content by analyzing the moisture released into the airflow. As the air absorbs moisture, it is analyzed by a hygrometer that measures only water content. Developed for demanding industrial applications, the new AVS701 from E+E Elektronik sets a new standard in air and gas velocity measurement. The optically and technically redesigned air and gas velocity sensor stands out above all for its accuracy and reliability, as well as significantly simplified installation.

It is optimised for demanding industrial applications in a measuring range from 0 to 40 m/s and -40 to +140 °C and is suitable for a wide variety of uses - from cleanroom and pharmaceutical applications to process monitoring in 3D printers. Increased process efficiency and sensor installation that is up to 60% quicker make the AVS701 a good choice. Thanks to the newly developed alignment crimp for the remote probe, the AVS701 can be positioned in the process with high repeatability. Ivanov: Most people in machine safety are familiar with Schmersal, known for providing safety devices, systems, and solutions for over 80 years. Its headquarters in Wuppertal, Germany, reflect a long-standing tradition of innovation and quality.

What many do not know is that tec.nicum is a subsidiary of the Schmersal Group, that focuses on safety services. We set up tec.nicum because customers needed more than hardware. They needed help with staff training, risk assessments, CE marking, safety concepts, and retrofits. A safety switch only does part of the job. The rest depends on how a machine is designed, used, and maintained. Our engineers and consultants cover all of that — independently, neutral, without a sales agenda. In practice, we work with both machine builders and end users, often on projects where the two need to come to an agreement about responsibilities.

IEN Europe: In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on personal liability issues for directors and management in relation to (cyber) security. How widespread is awareness of this issue already, and is there still a need for further education and awareness-raising?

Ivanov: Awareness still varies significantly. Large companies with dedicated compliance and risk management functions generally have a structured understanding of cybersecurity obligations. However, in many mid-sized manufacturing companies, management often does not yet fully connect cybersecurity risks with their own personal liability — and that gap is becoming increasingly critical.

Under German and increasingly EU law, management has a clear duty of care for risk management, and regulations such as NIS2 are making cybersecurity responsibilities more explicit at the executive level. As a result, after serious cyber incidents, investigations are increasingly examining what management knew, when they knew it, and what actions they took.

This is why further education and awareness-raising remain essential.

Our management workshops aim to provide clarity on legal obligations and practical steps — not to create fear, but to enable informed and responsible decision-making.

IEN Europe: How high is the general demand for advisory services on security issues in manufacturing? And how have EU regulations, such as the Cyber Resilience Act and the Machinery Directive, further altered or intensified this demand?

Ivanov: Demand has grown significantly in the past three years, driven by two factors: greater connectivity in production systems, and new regulations.

The new EU Machinery Regulation — applying from January 2027 — treats cybersecurity as part of machine safety for the first time. The Cyber Resilience Act goes further, requiring manufacturers to identify vulnerabilities, provide security updates across the product lifetime, and report serious incidents. For many manufacturers, this is unfamiliar territory. They are used to thinking about safety in terms of physical hazards — guards, interlocks, emergency stops. Now they must integrate cybersecurity into risk assessments and product development from the start. They know the general direction but need someone to translate regulation into concrete steps. That is where we come in.

IEN Europe: What other current trends do you see in the field of machine safety and safe production at the moment, such as IO-Link Safety?

19 Longer term, we expect safety to shift from something designed in once, to something monitored in real time. Operational data already makes it possible to detect early signs of wear or unsafe behaviour before an incident occurs. That is the direction. The fundamental goal, though, remains unchanged: helping people work safely with machines.

IEN Europe: Thank you for these insights!

COMPANY INFO: Hardware is a key component of modern industrial safety systems.

However, it requires additional elements such as ongoing training and employee coaching.

What solutions can you offer companies to help them stay up to date with the various requirements?

Ivanov: IO-Link Safety is one of the most practical developments in recent years. It transmits safety-relevant data over standard cables alongside process data, simplifying wiring, speeding up commissioning, and making fault diagnosis much faster. For a machine builder, that means fewer components and less downtime.

Alongside this, we see another important trend such is the growing use of collaborative robotics, which demands new safety strategies for human-machine interaction beyond traditional guarding. In parallel, digitalization and data-driven safety are enabling better diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and more transparent safety management throughout the machine lifecycle.

IEN Europe: What key trends and developments do you anticipate in industrial production over the next few years? What impact will the integration of humanoid robotics have, for example? How do you assess progress in the harmonisation and simplification of international standards?

Ivanov: Humanoid robots are the development we watch most closely.

Collaborative robots have already challenged the traditional assumption of strict separation between human and machine. Humanoid robots take this further — moving through a factory, handling a wide range of tasks, working directly alongside people. Existing robot safety standards were not written with this in mind. Manufacturers who deploy them now must carry out detailed risk assessments that go beyond what current standards explicitly require.

On harmonisation: progress is real but slow. Within Europe, the shift from directives to regulations reduces variation between member states.

Global harmonisation remains difficult. A manufacturer selling into both EU and North American markets still faces meaningfully different regulatory environments. Our practical advice: design to the most demanding applicable standard, document thoroughly, then identify which specific requirements apply per market.

20 safe and secure automation Automation Needs Secure Access: Using Agentless Software to Build an Industrial Gateway Solution Smart automation is reshaping industrial production. Machines, control systems and service processes are becoming more connected, data-driven and flexible. To fully leverage these capabilities, manufacturers need secure and reliable access to OT across sites – for maintenance, troubleshooting and optimization. Yet in many factories, legacy systems, segmented networks and stringent security requirements still stand in the way of what has been a commodity in IT environments for many years.

Smart automation initiatives increasingly extend beyond individual production lines. Machine builders support installed bases worldwide, manufacturers are centralizing service expertise, and maintenance teams are expected to resolve issues faster and more consistently. Use cases such as remote commissioning, condition-based maintenance or remote troubleshooting all depend on continuous, secure access to operational technology. Without controlled connectivity to machines and control systems, many automation concepts remain theoretical rather than operational.

Remote access is therefore not just an IT issue, but a core enabler of smart automation in OT. However, traditional access models struggle to meet industrial realities. Software agents cannot be installed on many machines and other factory equipment, while classic VPN solutions often grant overly broad network access, increasing cyber risk. Why VPN-based access falls short in industrial automation Many industrial networks still rely on VPN technologies to enable remote access. While VPNs authenticate users, they typically grant access at the network level. Once connected, additional mechanisms such as access control lists must be configured to prevent users from

Agentless Access follows a fundamentally different principle. Built according to a restrictive-by-design, zero-trust architecture, each connection is authorized individually, limited in time and bound to a specific role, endpoint and purpose. Access is granted point-to-point rather than network-wide, using protocol isolation and controlled tunnelling. This significantly reduces attack surfaces and aligns with industrial security standards such as IEC 62443 and regulatory frameworks like NIS2 and the EU Cyber Resilience Act. Companies therefore benefit from a high level of governance, while machine builders, plant operators, and internal automation teams can directly access their global systems and in accordance with the requirements of a modern zero-trust architecture. Instead of using homegrown or disparate remote access solutions from different vendors, access is managed through a central platform that covers the needs of both IT and OT teams.

From software to a secure access gateway TeamViewer has partnered with Kontron and Bechtle to deliver the Secure Access Gateway with Agentless Access pre-configured. Instead of deploying Agentless Access as a purely software-based feature, it is now available as a scalable, preconfigured industrial hardware gateway that can be easily deployed directly across complex production networks. 22 safe and secure automation The Holistic Approach is Essential for Achieving Secure Production Environments An IEN Europe interview with Laurent Liou, Product Marketing Manager, Moxa, specializing in OT network security and compliance with cybersecurity standards.

IEN Europe: What should a modern cybersecurity strategy for industry be able to achieve, in your view? What are the minimum requirements, both technically and from a regulatory perspective?

Liou: The priority in industry should be resilience and operational continuity, not just compliance. A modern cybersecurity strategy must keep operations running safely even under attack, and it must provide evidence of what has been put in place.

NIS2 raises the bar on governance. Companies need to know what assets they operate, detect incidents early, and be able to demonstrate controls in an audit. For OT, IEC 62443 offers a clear structure, from secure development practices in 4-1 to technical component requirements in 4-2. The CRA complements this by reinforcing product lifecycle responsibility and supply chain diligence.

Practically, the path is incremental. Build an accurate asset inventory, segment the network, restrict communications to what is necessary, and harden critical junctions such as zone boundaries. Then use network management and logging to spot unexpected devices, detect abnormal behaviour, and support troubleshooting and audits. Finally, make the organizational model work. OT must actively support IT with clearly defined roles, because OT networks mix modern and legacy equipment and security changes must not disrupt production.

IEN Europe: Which key components and considerations are necessary for future-proofing?

How can a company ensure that its protection remains up to date, particularly in the constantly evolving field of cybersecurity?

Liou: Future-proofing is as much about reconciling the past as preparing for the future. We see this firsthand. Equipment we deployed fifteen years ago still runs on production lines, which is a real test of long-term support and interoperability. Every new generation must remain compatible with what came before, while supporting what comes next, such as SPE, TSN, or NAMUR Open Architecture.

Where we innovate, we still support open standards. Turbo Ring can achieve failover in under 20 ms, and RSTP and MRP are always available.

High availability architectures remove the false choice between patching and continuity. With redundant hardware, communications stay up while one unit updates. Equally important is choosing vendors committed to long term support, including software component transparency, vulnerability handling, and CRA reporting obligations.

IEN Europe: Which products and services does Moxa offer to potential customers in the fields of secure networks and secure industrial communication?

Liou: No single product can secure an industrial network on its own. That is why we take a holistic approach that combines security hardened devices, centralized management, and hands on expertise.

IEN Europe: What specific challenges are involved in retrofitting or upgrading security solutions for production facilities, which have a wide range of components and machinery of various ages?

Liou: The fundamental constraint of OT retrofitting is one every plant manager understands: The line cannot stop.

Visibility must come first. In a loosely segmented network, and the looser the segmentation the riskier any reconfiguration becomes, mapping communication flows is a prerequisite. Then place routers and firewalls at zone boundaries and restrict traffic to what is necessary. Add protections such as deep packet inspection, MAC allowlisting, and de-

nial of service resilience where appropriate.

Legacy serial devices do not need to be replaced. A secure serial device server can provide authentication and encryption on the IP side, shielding older assets from the network.

Under the CRA, responsibility does not disappear when an upstream component reaches end of life. The manufacturer of the finished product remains accountable for lifecycle vulnerability handling, even when components age out. Early vendor dialogue helps, and segmentation plus IDS and IPS from the outset can turn an inevitable end of life into a manageable situation.

IEN Europe: In what ways can a secure network and communications infrastructure help with the development and implementation of new concepts and business models?

Liou: A secure network and communications foundation makes new digital concepts practical in industrial environments. It allows operational data to be shared in a controlled

way, without weakening the integrity of the control system that must keep running.

For example, NAMUR Open Architecture is designed to make production data usable for monitoring and optimization via a separate, secure channel, while leaving core process control unchanged. In practice, that works best when networks are segmented and data paths are clearly defined and monitored.

Certified platforms can also accelerate new applications. When an edge computer such as the UC-8200 is already IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 certified, it can reduce the effort needed to build a security case for the underlying platform. Teams can then focus their validation on the application and its interfaces.

Finally, secure connectivity enables scalable operational models such as remote monitoring, condition-based maintenance, and vendor support. Access can be controlled, logged, and audited, which makes service contracts easier to operate consistently across sites and easier to justify from a risk and compliance perspective.

IEN Europe: Could you share an example of a customer success story?

Liou: With pleasure. A process automation customer contacted us after IT introduced an IT grade router at the OT and DMZ boundary, which caused a network breakdown. Tanks with unfinished reactions had to be emptied and cleaned, which created major costs and downtime. The customer then wanted to push IT out entirely. We advised against that. When something goes wrong, both sides need each other. We brought OT and IT to the same table and rebuilt the boundary together. MXview One gave IT the visibility they needed, such as event logs and audit trails, while OT retained operational control.

Paul Rauschert Steinbach GmbH has enjoyed 120 years of success as a manufacturer of technical ceramics for precision components, ignition systems, heating elements and plastic moulded parts, thanks to decades of experience and expertise. Analysing the Lubricant Film Through Impedance Measurement From an electrical engineering perspective, a bearing can be described surprisingly simply: as a combination of a resistor and a capacitor.

Under boundary lubrication conditions, direct metallic contact occurs, which electrically corresponds to a short circuit or ohmic resistance.

As the lubricant film develops, these direct contacts are increasingly interrupted. Instead, numerous small regions form in which the metallic surfaces are separated by lubricant. These regions behave like tiny capacitors.

In practical terms, this means that under mixed lubrication conditions, the electrical behaviour continuously alternates between conductive and insulating states. The bearing therefore behaves like a parallel circuit consisting of resistors and capacitors.

A key advantage of this measurement principle is its universal applicability to all bearing types made from metallic materials, rolling bearings and plain bearings.

Sensor Technology for Condition Monitoring and R&D To better characterize changes in the lubricant film, HCP Sense has developed dedicated characteristic parameters. These parameters allow clear differentiation between boundary, mixed, and fluid lubrication conditions.

For users, this creates substantial added value: critical developments become visible at an early stage, long before actual damage occurs. At the same time, the collected data enables the definition of specific threshold values for safe operation – an essential basis for reliable machinery and optimized maintenance strategies.

The sensor technology proves its effective-

ness every day in applications at numerous well-known industrial companies. Its use cases range from test benches and subsystem carriers to complete machines; from rolling and plain bearings to motors, hydraulic systems, transmissions, vehicles, woodworking machinery, and wind turbines.

Early Warning System for Pump Failures in Critical Infrastructure Critical cooling pumps used in power grid infrastructure must operate continuously and reliably to ensure stable grid performance.

To minimize the risk of unexpected failures, Hitachi Energy conducted a benchmark study comparing different condition-monitoring technologies for the early detection of lubrication- and bearing-related damage.

As part of the research project, the sensor technology developed by HCP Sense was evaluated against a conventional vibration-based OEM monitoring system using a single-stage centrifu-

gal pump under realistic operating conditions.

To compare the warning capabilities of both systems, a controlled endurance test was performed using reduced lubricant quantity and degraded lubricant quality in order to deliberately induce a lubrication-related bearing failure.

The results showed that the HCP Sense hydrodynamic lubrication parameter identified a developing lubrication problem approximately three weeks before the final bearing failure occurred. According to the study, simple corrective actions such as relubrication or minor operating adjustments would have been sufficient to prevent the damage entirely.

In the direct comparison, the HCP Sense mixed lubrication parameter detected the impending failure 24 hours earlier than the vibration-based monitoring solution. The test ultimately resulted in catastrophic bearing failure with cage fracture, as no intervention was intentionally carried out during the “runto-failure” experiment.

Early Detection of Critical Lubrication Conditions in Engines Plain bearings are among the most critical components in large combustion engines, as sudden bearing failure can lead to severe crankshaft damage and extended downtime.

Particularly in medium- and high-speed engines, operators often have less than 60 seconds to shut down the system safely once critical operating conditions occur.

The technology was validated by MIBA on their plain-bearing test rig under static and dynamic load conditions. During controlled seizure tests, the characteristic parameter for mixed lubrication indicated increasing mixed friction up to 30 minutes before actual bearing seizure occurred. Under dynamic loading, the system also successfully detected lubrication breakdown during peak load conditions several minutes before catastrophic failure.

By detecting critical lubrication conditions at a very early stage, operators can intervene in time to prevent severe bearing and crankshaft damage, reduce downtime, and improve operational reliability.

Hybrid Industrial Label Printer Portable printer for labels with a maximum width of up to 101 mm Brady’s new BradyPrinter i4311 is designed to bridge the gap between stationary benchtop label printer power and mobile flexibility. A well-known limitation for most mobile label printers is the maximum width of the label.

The i4311 marks the new maximum label width at 101.60 mm for connected label printing systems that retain true portability.

The larger print width brings a lot more applications into the mobile label printing range, including perforated work-in-progress tags, common size rating plates and larger cable tags, wraps, sleeves, asset labels, component labels and GHS-compliant chemical labels.

Cut the cord The printer is powered by a battery that can handle 5000 large labels on a single charge.

Swapping batteries has been made easy and they can be charged in 3.5 hours.

Easy to integrate The new BradyPrinter i4311 can print labels from phones, tablets and laptops, and even from central company systems using Brady’s software development kit or ZPL support. In addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, the i4311 also features Ethernet and USB-C connections.

The printer’s on-board 7’’ (17.78 cm) touch screen offers both on-device support as well as the capability to print labels directly from the printer. Users can store on average different 85 000 label templates in the printer that can be completed with an on-board ‘fill in’ option, fully responsive to your touch.

Industry feedback Brady also revealed i4311 printer features that were developed with close involvement from the company’s long-standing custom-

ers. As a result, the printer’s footprint was limited to 23 x 23 x 33 cm and 5.9 kg and the device’s easy-to-grip handle was optimised.

A battery-saver was also added for when the printer is not in use and battery-swapping was made even easier.

Portable benchtop Right in the middle of Brady’s mobile label printer and industrial benchtop label printer line ups now sits the BradyPrinter i4311: a portable printer with the company’s benchtop industrial printing capabilities.

Compatible with more than 1300 Brady label parts, the i4311 can print on a majority of Brady’s reliable, laboratory-tested label materials. Just like other Brady printers the i4311 includes LabelSense technology to automatically set label material burn, size and pre-print settings as soon as a label roll is loaded.

The label printer also works with a host of free Brady Express Labels mobile apps. These enable users to select text in an image file for example, and import it for printing on a label. Or to read barcodes with a phone and send them to the printer. Labels can even be printed completely hands-free, using BradyVoice, a smartphone microphone and the BradyPrinter i4311. BradyVoice is the voice command within Express Labels and works with an iPhone, Android, or Tablet. To utilize BradyVoice, the device must be connected to either cellular or Wi-Fi networks. It understands text, numbers, and characters and works only in English, for now.
