IPHONE 6 A new iPhone 5s or maybe even 6 is rumored to be on the way in 2013 with more options than ever before. Analysts say the new models could be offered in different sizes and as many as eight different colors, and the iPad could boast just as many. Green iPhone Mini anyone?

BENDABLE PHONES Rumours are swirling that Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy S IV flagship smartphone will not only feature traditional software and hardware innovations, but will also take advantage of the company’s bendable screen technology, which will make its display unbreakable. Google and Vuzix are working on models that are similar to headsets, projecting an image in front of the wearer’s eye. In line with their Kindle philosophy, Amazon’s phone will likely be heavy on software integration for users who want to stay in their ecosystem of Amazon’s Appstore, Amazon MP3, Amazon Cloud Player and Kindle books. This phone will do all of those things; likely for a low price. You could see these by summer, 2013

XBOX 760 Microsoft has yet to FRQĆUPDQ\GHWDLOVDERXW the tentatively named Xbox 720 or Xbox Loop, but a holiday launch of its next-gen system seems imminent. You can bet the new console will be smaller than the 360 and that Microsoft will continue to push the Kinect peripheral. Despite the company’s interest in casual and motionbased games, expect the next Xbox to continue Microsoft’s appeal to hardcore gamers.

MIT’S FOLDING CAR – THE HIRIKO The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is expected to release the Hiriko in Europe and select American markets in 2013. The car is able to “fold up,” which allows three of them to occupy a typical parking space. The Hiriko’s front windshield is also the car door, which lets you park the car facing the sidewalk and step right into the pedestrian space. Its “robot wheels” allow the Hiroko to turn on a dime and its steering wheel is a wide screen LCD panel. The Hiriko currently has a 75-mile range and seems destined to be put into service in ZipCar-themed programs.

The record books are filled with athletes who overcame asthma on their way to victory. Some developed asthma as children; others were already at the top of their game. Either way, asthma didn’t stop them from success on the track, field, court—or in the pool.

Jerome Bettis

Jerome was diagnosed with Asthma at the age of fifteen. In spite of it, he played for thirteen years in the National Football League. He ranks fifth on the NFL’s all-time rushing list and he helped the Pittsburgh Steelers win a Super Bowl championship before he retired.

Asthma and athletics might seem like they don’t mix. Most sports require fitness and endurance, and asthma—a respiratory condition that causes shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing—can make working out difficult. Exercise, in fact, is one of the most common triggers of asthma attacks (along with allergies and infection.

eople with asthma can do more than play sports: They can excel at them. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, asthma affects more than 20% of elite athletes, and 1 in every 6 Olympic athletes. Even if you don’t want to be a professional athlete, you can benefit from being active and playing sports. It will keep you fit, help you stay at a healthy weight, and even strengthen the breathing muscles in your chest. If you have asthma, this is especially important because it can help your lungs work better.

Amy Van Dyken

As a child, Amy’s asthma was so bad that she couldn’t climb a flight of stairs. At age 6 she took up swimming on the advice of a doctor, who said that the rhythmic breathing and humid air might help stretch out her lungs. It was slowgoing at first—Van Dyken couldn’t swim 100 meters until she was a teenager—but she crawled her way to the top of her sport. She won four gold medals at the Athens Olympics and collected two more in Sydney four years later.

Dennis Rodman

Asthma didn’t stop him from playing 14 seasons in the NBA, winning five championships, and leading the league in rebounding for a record seven straight years; accomplishments that are especially notable because sports such as basketball that require endurance and sustained exertion with few opportunities to rest tend to be more challenging for asthmatics .

The new year has started and you’re ready to rock 2013 with an amped up more awesome version of you. Resolution list in hand, you’re ready to get better grades, exercise, eat right, not fight with your siblings, the whole nine. Then at some point around February its like that list never happened

and the shiny new 2013 “you”, starts to look suspiciously like the 2012 you. Which is why you must act fast, before all that new year momentum turns to dust. Make January count (if it’s all you do all year) … 10 things you HAVE to do before the end of January.

Clear Out Your Facebook/Twitter Feed

Learn Some American History Martin Luther King day isn’t just another day off from school. Its a holiday that celebrates a very important civil rights leader. Even if you know a fair amount about MLK;’s life take some time again this january to remember the reason for the holiday and do a little reading to refresh your memory or learn something new.

Clear out your Facebook and/or Twitter Feed. You know those annoying people, the girl with the overly perfect life, they guy with one too many religious or political quotes, that couple that does nothing but totally fight all over your timeline, or event that relative that’s waaayyy too old to be on social media in the first place, but then posts on your page …. Everyday. No need to have them annoying you and haunting your timeline all year long. Make a play for social media peace early in the year.

Mark Up Your Calendar

Make Something Start the year off with a small project that you can start and finish quickly. Accomplishment can sometimes propel you to do more. Check out a cool DIY project, or even a new recipe.

Pre-Oscar Movie Marathon With the Oscars happening in February, some of the best movies are out in January, hoping for Oscar gold. Spend some of those cold January afternoons getting caught up on the hottest nominated films.

Mark a day on your calendar each month to do something amazing or to try something new. What are some things you already love, or some things you’ve been curious about but nervous to do? A new haircut? Learning a new sport? Try it! Give yourself the gift of making 2013 rock for you in some way once a month. The thing is you won’t know what you’re good at or what works for you unless you give it a go. Put all those fears aside, take a deep breath and give it a go!

Go On A Gift Card Shopping Spree I don’t know about you, but I get a ton of gift cards for the holidays and I end up not even using most of them. Why? Because I simply forget I have them. Some have ended up even expiring! Get some of your friends together and go out and splurge, one $20 gift card to Best Buy at a time or maybe even do a swap. Just make sure they don’t go to waste.

Remind Your Friend How Awesome They Are You laugh, cry, talk, text and party with your best friend and you’re going to need them all year long. So show them they’re important to you in the first month of the year. Whether it’s getting a smile from your crush or getting into your dream college, celebrate one of life’s victories with your BFF. If all else fails its your job to remind your best friend how awesome they are. Take a moment to remind your friend why they’re special with a genuine compliment about their new haircut, stellar test score or ability to handle a difficult situation.

Buy A Hat Apparently January 15 is National Hat Day (no we don’t know why … not sure they do either). But any day that includes a cool new piece of headwear? Count me in! Hats can be a great way to cover up a bad hair cut, or just feel extra fly or funky for a day. So we urge you to take National Hat Day seriously this year!

Make Some Superbowl Plans Whether you love football, hate it or don’t even know what the superbowl is, this is a great time to get together with friends or family. If you’re not into football there’s usually someone there that isn’t either that you can hang with. But the excitement of the game is usually fun. February 3!

Exchange, Donate or Swap Away Your Unwanted Gifts The holidays are over and you’ve still got that pile of politely received but utterly unwanted gifts cluttering up your room. Those that you can exchange do and do it now or you might find that its too late later. Likely your friends each have their own piles, you could also host a gift swap where everyone has an opportunity to trade for something they like better. Your trash could be someone else’s treasure and vice versa. Another option is to donate unwanted gifts. They may be clutter, but if there is anyway they can find a good use rather than ending up in the garbage you can add “got green” to your resolved resolutions list.

HOT vs. Not ... Majors All majors aren’t created equal. See the 5

Will Your Major Get you a Job? A College Education May Be On Your agenda. But with the experts divided on whether all majors are created equal how should you choose? With employment high and financial security low, students are increasingly worried about their professional lives before they’ve even started their first college class. Mindful of what has been described as the worst job market in 25 years , on top of an average student loan debt of $30,000 or more, many students feel pressure to select a major that they believe will land them a stable career and pay back that debt as soon as possible. Students with degrees in fields such as health care, nursing, accounting, engineering, science, computer science and economics report lower rates of unemployment while those with degrees in finance, journalism, and graphic design have had a tougher road to travel. Yet, career experts still say that students should major in whatever area most interests them, even if it’s a less specialized field, such as English or sociology; that students who don’t delve into subjects they’re most passionate about ultimately hurt their chances of a successful, and satisfying, career in the long run. “It’s a delicate balancing act,” explains career advisor Carol Porter, “You have to measure your interests, skills, abilities and personality, while still considering the job market. Engineering is a great major and career path, but you may not even make it to the degree, let alone do well in the career if you greatly struggle with advanced math. On the other hand if your interests lead to a more obscure major, it doesn’t mean you can’t be successful, but you have to understand what type of fields may be receptive to the skill set that degree offers. Still, the market can change very quickly and a ‘hot’ major today may not be so hot tomorrow, which is why its important to be able to be good and happy in your field.” “What you make depends a lot on what you take,” says Anthony Carnevale, Ph.D, director of Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce. “Most young people in college take whatever interests them, without thinking what it can really do for them.” So how should you make the right decision? Wait While thinking about potential majors isn’t out of line. Most experts agree that students should give themselves time. Try a diverse set of classes in their first year or two of school to see what really appeals to them. “I declared a major freshman year but ended up switching after I realized I had absolutely no interest in any of the upper level major classes I would need to take,” says recent college graduate Justin Walls. “ I figured that was a bad sign. Unfortunately because I

declared so early and mixed in so many major requirements in with my general classes it cost me an extra semester. I should have waited.” But Don’t Wait Too Long College officials tend to agree that students should wait before they make a decision that has the potential to affect the rest of their scholastic and professional lives, they shouldn’t wait too long. College is expensive and wasting too much time could lead to even more expenses and costs.

Research and Ask If you see a job you think you’d like to do, find a person who does it and ask what type of education and skills they needed to get there. Also as you visit colleges, or even after you select one, ask questions about individual majors, visit the career development department, look at the class list in the course catalog and learn as much as you can about different majors before you commit. Make sure You’re Passionate After researching various fields of study, it’s likely that one will stand out as especially appealing. Experts say follow that path even if you’re unsure about where it might lead. “Internships, jobs, networking, the ability to market a degree and how you prepare can sometimes be more important than any particular field of study,” says job recruiter Evan Edwards. “It’s not always just the major, especially as you get further into your career and get more experience.” Consider STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) “What society rewards in economic terms has moved away from the softer majors,” says Carnevale. “It’s become about how muc math you do.” Be Aware of the Exceptions to The Rules Fields such as engineering, medicine, physical therapy and nursing demand that workers possess a specific skill set which often means that these fields of study must be jumped into immediately and carefully planned from day one.

CH: What inspired you to do a reality show allowing you fans to get up close and personal with your life? AB: I did it for my fans; I wanted them to see my life up close. The only reality show I’ve ever been on was Keeping Up With the Kardashians and there was a misconception that I was from LA. I wanted them to see that I’m a true New York girl and show Latinas in a fun positive light.

CH: Who do you look up too? Who influences you the most? AB: My mother! My mother is hands down my biggest influence. She is an incredibly hard working Latina and has incredible work ethic. She doesn’t have to work but she wants to and arrives 30 min early to work almost everyday. She set a great example for my sister and I.

CH: Taping the show and watching the show are two different things. What did you get from watching the show Empire Girls? AB: I learned to not be so worried about what anybody thought of me, and I learned that it is ok to be yourself. I thought the hardest part of doing a reality show was watching it. Naturally we are critical of ourselves “oh my God I hate my talking voice” to “why do I make that facial expression” I learned to just except myself. Hearing the positive feedback from the fans was encouraging.

CH: A lot of your fans are rooting for you. You represent the Latino community. Does that put additional pressure on you? AB: No not at all it actually gets me excited, it makes me work harder and want to be better in everything that I do.

CH: What was your New Year’s Resolution? AB: To be in charge of my own life and really accomplish what I want to accomplish and to not sweat the small stuff or allow it to distract me from my ultimate goal.

CH: Is season 2 of empire girls in the works? And when will it be premiering? AB: We are in talks about it now and our fingers are crossed hopefully we’ll be back this summer. CH: How important is God in everything that you do? AB: God is first in everything that I do. My upbringing in the church has definitely stayed with me and it’s encouraging to know that when all else fails that my life is in Gods hands. CH: I have heard some rumors that you are dipping into possibly having your own nail polish line. What can you tell us about that? AB: I am so excited and passionate about my first entrepreneur project and it is called Fingertip Fetish. It’s a vegan luxury polish line. The first collection was inspired by where I grew up the capital of the world New York City.

A d r i e n n e B a il o n

CH: What type of advice would you give to someone getting into the entertainment business? AB: I would say practice makes perfect what ever you do own your craft. Just like Oprah said luck is opportunity meeting preparation and you got to be prepared for when that opportunity comes. CH: Are there any moments that aired where you cringed and wished it was not caught on camera? AB: Yes of course, but that’s real life. That’s what reality TV is about letting your guard down and letting the world in.

CH: What is your favorite food dish? AB: Anything from the Cuchifrito and I’m obsessed with Jamaican food. CH: Where do you see yourself a few years from now? AB: I see myself expanding Fingertip Fetish my nail polish line into an entire beauty brand. I see myself recording albums in English and Spanish and hopefully starting a family.

CH: Name 5 things you can’t leave the house without? AB: My iPhone, lip balm, my sunglasses, gum, and hair tie

CH: What has been the biggest hurdle for you in your career thus far? AB: Trying to prove I could transition from a “child star” to an adult and be successful.

CH: How do you stay in good shape? Is it diet & working out or both? AB: Both but I try not to be to restricted with my diet

CH: Is there a moment in your career that you consider one of those big moments where you knew you had officially arrived?

AB: Yes when the Cheetah Girls broke the attendance record for the Houston Astro Dome, Miley Cyrus opened for us and it was almost 90,000 people. My favorite singer Selena’s last performance was there and it was my dream to perform there. CH: If you could describe your style, how would you describe it? AB: Nyc chic; the eclectic side of me from LES I’m not afraid to try anything. CH: Adrienne you have an amazing voice, You have built a huge career out of it. What is in the oven in regards to your music career? AB: I am recording my first solo album and hopefully putting out a single and album in 2013 I’m really excited about it, it is what I’m most passionate about. CELEBRITYHIGHMAG.COM JANUARY 2013

taking on a meatless monday By Taylor Williams

’ve never been into vegetarians. I mean I don’t necessarily have anything against them personally, but aside from cheeseburgers topping my favorite food list, I just thought the whole “no meat thing” was kind of a culinary buzz kill. And vegans?! Forget it. Can we say crazy excessive overkill? Then my brother’s friend brought over a DVD called “Forks Over Knives” which in short is about how much healthier it is to eat a plant-based diet and about how all of these people who were suffering from conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol were able to get off their medications by simply replacing meat and dairy with plant-based foods. It didn’t convert me into an overnight vegan, but it did make me want to “clean up” some of my eating habits. While I wasn’t ready to give up meat entirely, I figured I could eat a little less. So I decided to pledge the Meatless Monday movement. What is Meatless Monday you may ask? Meatless Monday is an international campaign that encourages people to not eat meat on Mondays to improve their health and the health of the planet. As we celebrate the start of 2013, 45% of us will resolve to change our lives for the better. Yet less than half of those promises are in effect six months later. For a New Year’s goal you can stick with it’s easy to start the week with more fruits and veggies on your plate and it’s a resolution that benefits both your health and the environment. According to research by the University of Scranton, self-improvement and weight goals top the list of 2013 resolutions. Swapping meat for produce, beans and whole grains can help you manage your weight, prevent chronic disease, and boost your intake of key nutrients like fiber and vitamin C. Plus, going meatless on Monday can help you reduce your environmental impact by saving resources like fresh water, land and fossil fuel. Meatless, produce-focused, and environmentally sustainable meals are also some of this year’s hottestculinary and wellness trends, so you’ll be able to stick to your resolution while enjoying the best of 2013. WHY MEATLESS? Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovas03 cular disease, diabetes and obesity. It can also help reduce your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel. 16 CELEBRITYHIGHMAG.COM JANUARY 2013

Read about these benefits below. But keep in mind that just going meatless is not enough. You need to add healthy, environmentally friendly meat-free alternatives to your diet each week. Further, if you do eat meat on other days, it is strongly recommend grass-fed, hormone-free, locally-raised options whenever possible. HEALTH BENEFITS LIMIT CANCER RISK: Hundreds of studies suggest that diets high in fruits and vegetables may reduce cancer risk. REDUCE HEART DISEASE: Recent data from a Harvard University study

found that replacing saturated fat-rich foods (for example, meat and full fat dairy) with foods that are rich in polyunsaturated fat (for example, vegetable oils, nuts and seeds) reduces the risk of heart disease by 19%. FIGHT DIABETES: Research suggests that higher consumption of red and processed meat increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. CURB OBESITY: People on low-meat or vegetarian diets have significantly lower body weights and body mass indices. A recent study from Imperial College London also found that reducing overall meat consumption can prevent long-term weight gain. LIVE LONGER: Red and processed meat consumption

is associated with increases in total mortality, cancer mortality and cardiovascular disease mortality. IMPROVE YOUR DIET. Consuming beans or peas results in higher intakes of fiber, protein, folate, zinc, iron and magnesium with lower intakes of saturated fat and total fat. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions that are accelerating climate change worldwide . . . far more than transportation. And annual worldwide demand for meat continues to grow. Reining in meat consumption once a week can help slow this trend. MINIMIZE WATER USAGE. The water needs of livestock are tremendous, far above those of vegetables or grains. An estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef. Soy tofu produced in California requires 220 gallons of water per pound. HELP REDUCE FOSSIL FUEL DEPENDENCE. On average, about 40 calories of fossil fuel energy go into every calorie of feed lot beef in the U.S. Compare this to the 2.2 calories of fossil fuel energy needed to produce one calorie of plant-based protein. Moderating meat consumption is a great way to cut fossil fuel demand. WHY MONDAY? For most Americans the week begins on Monday. Monday is like the January of the week: the day that we can reset our intentions after the weekend and try again. By

‘‘SWAPPING MEAT FOR PRODUCE, BEANS AND WHOLE GRAINS CAN HELP YOU MANAGE YOUR WEIGHT ... AND REDUCE YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.’’ recommitting to our resolutions every Monday, we get 52 opportunities to stick with it. We also set our intentions for the next six days. We plan ahead and evaluate progress. From an early age we internalize this rhythm. And studies suggest we are more likely to maintain behaviors begun on Monday throughout the week. That makes Monday the perfect day to make a change for your health and the health of our planet. To learn more about the utility of Monday to start and sustain positive behavior change, please With Meatless Monday communities on Facebook and Twitter, you’ll have the weekly reminders, recipes and healthy news you need to keep on going all year. y parents were always very religious. From as young as I can remember our lives revolved around our congregation from services to social events. I always thought the people were nice, almost like a second family. I had friends in our congregation, we did tons of activities and I even genuinely believed for myself that our beliefs were to my benefit. But at school things were different. The other kids at my school didn’t live their lives like we did. There were always things they were involved in that I just wasn’t allowed to be. I didn’t want to be singled out or labeled a freak so more and more I kept my Christianity to myself.

I thought I was fooling everyone but I wasn’t. One day after service one of the members of my congregation that I’d grown up with approached me. “How do you feel about the congregation and about being a Christian?” he asked me. Almost automatically I rushed to offer the prepared answers I’d been trained to give. “No” he said. “How to YOU feel?” he asked pointing to my heart. Honestly I felt guilty, but I wasn’t ready to admit it.

A party sometime later with my schoolmates became the ultimate test. I’d been lying about having a girlfriend to avoid having to deal with dating issues among my friends. As far as they knew I had four different girls and was having sex with all of them. In reality I hadn’t even kissed a girl By high school, the differences between my life and that of my friends became even more before, so when they pushed me in a room with a girl from our school and locked the door I intense. I wasn’t allowed to see the same ‘R’ rated or vampire themed movies they were all panicked. We’d both been drinking, and I knew she liked me. I knew we were expected to “do talking about, my parents wouldn’t let me buy the clothes they did or listen to the same music it” and tell everybody, but this was so much further than anything I’d done before. She asked me and my curfew was hours earlier than theirs. I couldn’t invite friends over to my house because what was wrong, “you don’t want to cheat on your girl?” I told her “no, she won’t see me..”… I knew the second my dad heard them curse or saw their And she wouldn’t, because she didn’t exist, but my clothes he would tell me I couldn’t hang out with them anyI started parents who did exist couldn’t see me either …so So . in fit to wanted “I more. At first it seemed perfect. I started cursing at school, to lie to everyone, including myself” even if my parents did … I believed and I didn’t buying and hiding “cool” clothes from my parents and hanging out want to disappoint the god I believed in. more and more with the other kids. I’d sneak and see whatever movie was the most popular among my new friends. I smoked and drank when they did and I realized I owed it to God , my parents and myself to confess what I’d been doing. The conreally was willing to do whatever I needed for them to accept me. And they did. I was popular, sequences from embarrassment to punishment were going to be brutal. My parents would for the first time in my life, and it felt great. People wanted to hang with me … people wanted never trust me again and I’d probably end up with more rules than before, but I had to do it. to BE me. On Sunday’s and at congregation events I’d show up at my parent’s side as always. Somewhere between my two lives I had lost my real one and I needed help, urgently. I couldn’t I’d smile and try not to act irritated or bored but it was getting harder and harder because listenundo the past, but I didn’t want to do any more damage to myself, my family or my beliefs. Tech giant Google unveiled the largest free public Wi-‐Fi spot in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighbor-‐ hood, where the New York head-‐ quarters are located. The company opened its NYC offices in 2006 and as Alex Fitzpatrick notes: Google’s choice of location for the giant network is no surprise: Chel-‐ sea is home to Google’s New York headquarters, meaning employees out at lunch breaks or area meetings will be able to remain productive even while out of the office. The network runs between Gansevoort St. and 19 St. from 8th Ave to the West Side Highway and in area public spaces, includ-‐ ing the Chelsea Triangle, 14th Street Park and Gan-‐ sevoort Plaza.

The secured network will also be used by businesses, residents and students in the area, and it will cov-‐ er the outdoor areas of the Fulton Houses, a housing project owned by the New York City Housing Au-‐ thority. Jordan Newman, a Google spokes-‐ person, said there are currently no plans to expand the Wi-‐Fi access to other NYC neighborhoods.
