After a little research and polling a number of PR/social media luminaries who use the iPhone on a day-to-day basis, check out these seven “must-have” iPhone apps.

Gotta Have It

• TweetDeck: There seems to be two camps on this topic; those who love Hootsuite, and those who love TweetDeck. However, TweetDeck’s reliability paired with the ability to organize multiple groups and multiple accounts makes it a little more valuable. It’s an essential tool for monitoring your brand on Twitter while you’re away from the office. Oh, and make sure you set the notifications and check for updates frequently. When customers decide

"The Bump app allows iPhone users to swap contact info simply by touching phones. Really. I’m not making this up. It’s way cool." to airs a grievance with your company (or offer kudos) it’s important … no, essential … to respond quickly. Having your phone constantly “ding” with notifications gets some getting used to, but if you’re handling your own social media it’s something you’ll want to get accustomed to. Quickly. • Facebook. An unquestioned staple. Like TweetDeck, the ability to monitor your fan page, upload photos, and add other content on the run is invaluable. If you’re already using Facebook on your iPhone to stay in touch with friends and family, using it for business requires a crash course and extra care when posting. At the moment, the Facebook for iPhone app makes it a little too easy to accidentally post personal information and updates on company pages, so double-check to make sure you’re on your business page before you post. • Bump: A new app, but one that’s gaining popularity by the day. I like to call it the business card of the future. Especially for you tradeshow and conference attendees. The Bump app allows iPhone users

to swap contact info simply by touching phones. Really. I’m not making this up. It’s way cool. • Google: Email, Reader, Maps. You need them all. But you also need the basic search engine and it’s ability to help you find anything, anytime, anywhere. Remember when you used to call 411 for a phone number? Me neither. And quick tip, if you can’t find your own company’s phone number in 30 seconds or less using Google for iPhone, chances are that nobody else can. Fix that. • Evernote: Are you one of those people who do their best thinking in the car? Then this app is for you. Capture those ideas and sync them with your Mac back at the office. Grab screen captures of whiteboards after meetings and upload them to your desktop. Or take notes at a meeting and upload to your files online later. Evernote does it all. • Dragon Dictation: This one I especially like because much of my time is spent writing for clients. Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon NaturallySpeaking that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages. In fact, it’s up to five times faster than typing on the keyboard. I have been able to generate entire press releases using this tool. Using this app takes some practice and some editing, but it truly is a time saver if you need to draft a document while you’re on the go. • WordPress: The popular Web blogging tool now has an app for the iPhone (3G and original) and the Touch. It claims to be the only iPhone app that allows you to write posts, upload photos, edit and manage comments—right from your phone. A handy little tool when you need to manage your blog on the go, wouldn’t you say? Social media marketing is no longer a trend. It's now an imperative every business owner must cultivate and nurture with consistency. Using apps to manage your social media presence helps streamline your tasks so they are quicker and easier to manage from anywhere. And that’s something any business owner and savvy online marketer can appreciate.  Melissa Rein is a Scottsdale Airpark-based public relations professional and owner of public relations, marketing communications and event design consultancy called The Brand Consortium Public Relations.
