GFWC-West Side club gives donations to many local organizations The GFWC-West Side distributed money it raised to worthwhile organizations including the Kingston Fire Department for Pulse-Oximetry units, Angelic Diapers Ministries, the Lands at Hillside Farms and the Dream Green Farm, a program for special-needs students through the Luzerne Intermediate Unit. The club also participates in many community service projects such as Operation Smile, which gives blankets and food donations to families in need. Reception honors supporters of Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPA The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania honored individuals and an organization for their outstanding support at the 18th annual Champion of Youth Reception at Glenmaura National Golf Club. Funds raised support the club’s after-school programs in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. WVW Key Club members attend leader camp Stephen Wheadon and Janki Patel, members of the Wyoming Valley West High School Key Club, attended the Kiwanis International Key Leader Camp at Camp Conrad Weiser in Wernersville. The students were sponsored by the Plymouth Kiwanis Club, which provided tuition. In addition, each received a partial scholarship from the Kiwanis International Foundation. Wheadon and Patel attended a meeting of the Plymouth Kiwanis Club and provided a presentation on their experiences. Wheadon is the incoming sophomore representative to the Key Club. Patel is incoming Key Club secretary. The Plymouth Kiwanis Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Happy Pizza in Plymouth. The Salvation Army was one of approximately 30 local food banks and pantries that benefited from the 19th National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 14. The drive was sponsored by the National Association of Letters Carriers branches 1 15 and 162, the U.S. Postal Service, Commission on Economic Opportunity, United Way of Wyoming Valley, and the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council. Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis presents award at luncheon The Kiwanis Club of Wilkes-Barre celebrated Kiwanis International Prayer at an annual luncheon held at Genetti Hotel and Conference Center. Lynn Evans Biga, executive director of Luzerne County Head Start, was presented the seventh annual Rev. Dr. Jule Ayers Outstanding Spiritual Welfare Award, $250 for her place of service, and an inscribed commemorative plaque on display at Genetti. The award is named in honor of Rev. Dr. Jule Ayers, former pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre, and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Wilkes-Barre. Biga has served the children of Head Start for 37 years; 22 as executive director. The Kiwanis Club of Wilkes-Barre meets at noon each Thursday at Genetti. Steve Golya, president of the Hughestown Lions Club, along with its officers and members, announce the winners of this year’s Education Awards. The recipient of the Clarence Hensley-Jerry Chilipko Award is John Poli, and the recipient of the Roy and Hilda Stauffer Award is Ronald Musto. Both young men reside in Hughestown and will each receive $500. The winners and their families will be honored at a special dinner on July 18. The Lions club recently held an election of officers and the installation will take place during the dinner. Officers elected are Steve Golya, president; Fred Pierantoni, first vice president; Denise Chilipko, treasurer; Frank Tierney, tail twister.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northeastern Pennsylvania affiliate presented awards at a reception at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel, Scranton. Barbara Connelly received the Spirit of Hope Award, which honors the late Judy McDonough Murray. Connelly coordinated the first “Two Steppin’ Towards a Cure” dance event two years ago and joined 10 other survivors in the 20th anniversary Race for the Cure, winning in the survivor category. Debbie Snyder received the 201 1 Angel Award, which honors the late Ellen Astolfi. Snyder was recognized for her many years of volunteering on the race registration committee. Tom Donohue and Lamar Advertising received the 201 1 Local Media Award for assisting Komen with a billboard media campaign. Dolly Woody received the Face of Komen Award for leading the charge in the fight against breast cancer. Woody is the executive director of the northeastern Pennsylvania Komen affiliate. Donna Rupp received the Volunteer of the Year award. Rupp is the secretary for Komen NEPA Race for the Cure. Dr. Margarete Zalon received the Promise of One Award for a decade of service to the local Komen affiliate. Zalon is an associate professor of nursing at The University of Scranton. Lackawanna School District received the first-ever Trailblazer Award for its commitment to empowering students to raise awareness about breast cancer. Mark, Josh and Jonathon Nespoli, Berwick, received a Friends in Flight Award for organizing the Berwick Speedo Run, which has raised more than $26,000 since 2009. Woodloch and Robert Kiesendahl received a Friends in Flight Award for raising more than $35,000 for the local affiliate.
