AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP

Teixeira delivers a game-winner The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Curtis Granderson had a tying RBI single in the ninth inning then stole second before Mark Teixeira singled him home to give CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night. The Yankees rallied for two runs in the eighth against relievers Casey Janssen and Marc Rzepczynski, and two in the ninth off Frank Francisco (1-2). Robinson Cano had an RBI double in the eighth and Russell Martin followed with a run-scoring single. Sabathia (5-3) retired the final 16 batters in his first complete game at home for the Yankees. He gave up eight hits and four runs in the first four innings.

Red Sox 4, Indians 2

CLEVELAND — Josh Beckett picked up first regularseason win in Cleveland — where he pitched an October gem four years ago — to lead the Boston Red Sox to a win over the Indians, who couldn’t quite muster another lateinning rally and lost for just the fifth time at home. Beckett (4-1) allowed one run and five hits in 6 2-3 innings for his only non-postseason win at Progressive Field. He won here in the 2007 ALCS, pitching eight dominant innings in Game 5 as the Red Sox kept their season alive and eventually won the series. Tigers 7, Rays 6

DETROIT — Alex Avila’s second homer of the game gave the Detroit Tigers the lead in the eighth inning and Orioles 5, Royals 3 they held on for a victory over BALTIMORE — Adam the Tampa Bay Rays. Bruce delivers big hit; Reds snap 6-game skid The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — Jay Bruce hit a tiebreaking, threerun double in the ninth inning and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 Tuesday night to snap a sixgame losing streak. The Reds had lost eight straight against NL East-leading Philadelphia, including a threegame sweep in last year’s division playoff series. Bruce came in swinging a hot bat. He had four homers in the last five games and was tied for the NL lead with 12. But he struck out three times and popped out in his first four at-bats before clearing the bases against Ryan Madson (2-1). Braves 2, Pirates 0

PITTSBURGH — Jair Jurrjens pitched six-hit ball into the eighth inning to lead the Atlanta Braves to a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rockies 12, Diamondbacks 4 Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 2

DENVER — Carlos Gonzalez homered twice and the Colorado Rockies became the first team to decipher Josh Collmenter’s tomahawk-throwing style, rallying past Arizona despite losing pitcher Jorge De La Rosa in the opener of the day-night doubleheader. In the second game, Joe Saunders snapped a personal six-game losing skid and Kelly Johnson homered and drove in two runs in the Diamondbacks’ win. Dodgers 5, Astros 4

HOUSTON — Rookie Jerry Sands hit a grand slam in the third inning and Jay Gibbons

also homered as the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a threegame losing streak with a win over the Houston Astros. Cubs 11, Mets 1

CHICAGO — Ryan Dempster pitched seven effective innings, Starlin Castro had three hits and three RBIs and the Chicago Cubs pounded the stumbling New York Mets. Alfonso Soriano, Darwin Barney and Lou Montanez each had two hits for Chicago, which kicked off a nine-game homestand with its 11th victory in its past 12 games against NL East teams. Montanez started in right field hours after he was promoted from Triple-A Iowa when the Cubs put right-hander Matt Garza on the 15-day disabled list with elbow stiffness. The Mets dropped their first game since a pair of magazine articles about owner Fred Wilpon. Wilpon first made a couple of chilly comments about three of the team’s biggest stars in an interview with The New Yorker, then told Sports Illustrated the club is “bleeding cash” and could lose up to $70 million this year. Brewers 7, Nationals 6

MILWAUKEE — Jonathan Lucroy hit a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning and Brandon Boggs collided into catcher Wilson Ramos to score the go-ahead run, rallying the Milwaukee Brewers over the Washington Nationals. Milwaukee has won 12 of its last 15 overall and has its longest winning streak in the 11-year history of Miller Park at eight games, though this one certainly didn’t come easily.
