Play up front makes Hawkeyes a title contender By JOHN ERZAR jerzar@timesleader.com

HANOVER TWP. – Hanover Area rode one of the biggest horses in the Wyoming Valley Conference all the way to the postseason in 2010. But now that Times Leader Player of the Year Andrew Forgatch has graduated, replacing him and his workload are nearly impossible. “You don’t,” Hanover Area coach Ron Hummer said. “You have the kids fight for the job and see which one is going to start at the tailback.” History is on the Hawkeyes’ side. The program churns out quality runners annually.

Steve

Massive Martin Steve returns at the left tackle spot. The 6-foot-7, 300-pounder is drawing interest from several major colleges. He’ll line up next to another returning starter, left guard Tyler Edwards. Center Tim Saltz and right guard Anthony Dennis, also considered one of the WVC’s best, are also back. Either Brandon Holmgren or Jared Jones will play at the other interior spot. Add returning starter Chuckie Schmoll at tight end and either John Zuder or Dillon Ropietski at fullback, and Hanover Area has the players to create running room.

Ksiazkiewicz

Edwards

The Hawkeyes, though, would like to be more diversified and that’s where quarterback Joe Ksiazkiewicz could play a big role. Ksiazkiewicz should be more comfortable running the offense in his second year with the program after moving from Missouri. “He’s matured a lot from last year to this year,” Hummer said. “It was his first year as the starting quarterback at the school, so there was a learning process. He’s really controlling the offense. He has a good arm. Now his decision making is what we’re worried about this year.”

Bennett

Dennis

Still, it could take awhile for the passing game to click as Bennett and Suda, either of whom could be positioned at wideout, are the only returners who caught a pass in 2010. Antonio Costantino, Sinclair Saunders and John Westawski could also see action as receivers. “Out of those five guys, we have to find two or three who are solid,” Hummer said. ON DEFENSE No doubt the defensive line is the unit’s strength with Edwards and Steve back as tackles, Dennis reSee HANOVER, Page 17

ON OFFENSE No matter whom takes over the running back position – either Parrish Bennett or Geno Suda – he’ll be running behind one of the top lines in the area.
