When we began our conversation about homes, Realtors and decorators told us it’s all about condos these days. It could be because we are downsizing. (Thank you, Marie Kondo.) Or, perhaps we just want more personal time and less housecleaning and yard work. I have reached the age where many of my friends are, like me, empty nesters who no longer need three- and four-bedroom homes. Luxury Realtor Liz Heinkel of Coastal Christies said her buyers want condominiums for their views, easy upkeep and walkability. “Condos have the ability to ‘lock and go’ for families on the go,” she said. “Less upkeep gives us more time to appreciate the amenities of Tampa and St. Petersburg.” She and her husband, Larry, lived at Parkshore on Beach Drive in St. Petersburg for two years before moving to a condo near the beach. “When we were downtown, we decided to

try to live with one car to see if we could do it,” Heinkel said. “It was never an issue. We both worked and lived our lives downtown.” I often dream about knocking down my own waterfront home and replacing it with a small cottage and a giant yard for my dogs. Needless to say, my husband is not on board with that plan. Maybe I will persuade him to move to a condo after he sees the beautiful photos on our fashion pages this month, with a backdrop of the city from each room. Our featured fashions are meant to inspire more time in our homes, from relaxing on the sofa to cooking in our kitchens and entertaining by the pool. Thank you to Glicia Spencer and her husband, Dr. James Spencer, for opening their expansive Parkshore condominium to our team for our fashion shoot. The home, which is for sale, has broad views of the St. Petersburg waterfront, the downtown district and

neighborhoods across the city. We are excited to show you beautiful outfits befitting each room of the home. We also found decorative items and personal accessories to accent our theme. I love to send guests home with a set of place mats embellished with the latitude and longitude of St. Petersburg or a throw with a map of our community. We found a few other Tampa and St. Petersburg keepsakes as well. This year, my out-of-town girlfriends will be receiving scarves designed with Tampa landmarks. My house is very “lived-in” between my children and their friends and our dogs, who have free rein of the premises. I use my wedding china for regular evening meals as well as my real silver pieces. I like nice things, but I like to create memories more. When I’m not home, I’m usually visiting my daughter in Los Angeles. Thankfully, I have found the perfect inn near the ocean to recharge after the long flight and to resettle while I am temporarily transplanted. Many of you have similar, sentimental

spaces that serve as a temporary respite when visiting your children at college or returning for sports or alumni events. We profile a few college hotels most loved by our readers. We also report on some new housing developments where nature is the key amenity. And, speaking of new housing, we chat with Bravo reality TV star Thom Filicia about his designs for the new Riverwalk Place on the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa. Filicia, rated among the world’s top 100 designers, has worked with some big names, including Oprah and Jennifer Lopez. Now he’s creating floor plans and decorating the residential lobby and the Sky Club in Riverwalk. He shares his vision of what Tampa buyers prefer over those in Miami and New York when it comes to design and decor. Whether you are home or away, I hope you will join us in celebrating being comfortable entertaining or spending downtime in your own domestic space. — Kathy Saunders

anting to share our love for the Tampa Bay area was the idea behind our shopping trip this month. We found a wide range of locally themed items at shops in St. Petersburg and Tampa. A St. Petersburg jeweler has designed a special Sunshine-cut diamond, and sparkling pendants and watches featuring the sundial in St. Petersburg. The owner of a Tampa linen shop designed elegant silk scarves with Tampa landmarks. And we found pillows, tea towels and other home furnishings with local scenes, area codes, maps and adages. Any of our finds will make great gifts, but it will be hard to part with a few of our purchases.

A magnate’s RETREAT BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN

W

hen Dr. James Nielsen first stepped inside the Dunedin house on Buena Vista Drive 15 years ago, his immediate reaction was: “Oh, my goodness.’’ Built in 1925, it was a veritable riot of styles, textures and colors. Furnishings were massive and plush. Huge, hand-painted murals depicted the Taj Mahal, an Arabian palace and a seaside garden from antiquity. Senoritas twirled in stained glass and Egyptian chariots raced in tile. Almost everywhere he looked, Nielsen saw marble, crystal and velvet. “What would you do with it?’’ he asked a friend. “I’d leave it just the way it is,’’ came the answer. Nielsen and his wife, Dane Webb, did exactly that, ensuring that the house would remain one of the most impressive, extravagant, over-the-top residences in the entire Tampa Bay area. “It certainly wasn’t my taste or my wife’s,’’ Nielsen says, “but we got in there and got used to it and it’s magnificently done.’’

The mansion’s grounds are sprawling.

Through the decades, the home overlooking St. Joseph Sound has hosted Jazz Age flappers, top pro golfers and one of the world’s most famous movie stars. It has been the scene of weddings and lavish parties. Neighborhood kids have fished from its dock, thought to be one of the few covered docks in Pinellas County. If the house is reminiscent of those fabulous homes in Palm Beach, credit goes to Addison Mizner. In the 1920s, Mizner was one of America’s most famous architects, known for the South Florida resorts and mansions he designed in the Spanish Colonial style he so admired. His commissions included the Everglades Club, in its day the

32

bay

most exclusive social club in Palm Beach. Mizner transformed the look of South Florida’s wealthy winter playgrounds but lent his talents to only a few homes on the state’s west coast. Among them: the house in Dunedin. A Detroit man, W.S. Frischkorn, hired Mizner to design the house, which reflected some of the architect’s trademark idiosyncracies. It had, and still has, a stairway to nowhere. The only ground-level bathroom then was outside: It was considered too indecorous for the “help’’ to use indoor facilities where guests might see them. In 1934, Frischkorn sold the house to cereal magnate W.J. Kellogg and wife Carrie in what the Dunedin Times

Murals are believed to have been painted by the same artist who did those in Clearwater’s Kapok Tree restaurant.

called Pinellas County’s largest real estate transaction of the year. The couple had spent the “season’’ at their ranch in California, where Kellogg bred Arabian horses, but wanted to winter in Florida, the paper reported. Business had been good for Kellogg, whose company weathered the Great Depression and was turning out a record number of boxes of Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies and other cereals. Judging from old photographs that Nielsen and Webb obtained from the Kellogg Foundation, much of the furniture that was in the house when they bought it had been there since the Kelloggs’ day.

Outdoor areas boast exotic plants from around the world, including more than 40 species of palms.

Above, the bar features stained glass panels of bullfighters and twirling senoritas. Below left, marble and etched glass adorn one of the six full bathrooms. Below right, a prior owner installed this “disco’’ with Peter Max-designed floor and curtains that part to show the stars.

Through the decades, the home overlooking St. Joseph Sound has hosted Jazz Age flappers, top pro golfers and one of the world’s most famous movie stars. It has been the scene of weddings and lavish parties.

This is one of the home’s five bedrooms.

Along with the house, Kellogg acquired the small island a few hundred yards away. He wanted to build a bridge to it and put a guest house there but couldn’t get permission. He did succeed, though, in building a long covered dock. (Its roof was replaced after the infamous “no-name storm’’ of 1993.) The Kelloggs sold the house in 1937. It’s unclear who the buyers were — online records don’t go back that far — but in 1964, a widow named Ethel King sold it to William “Bill’’ Matthew, a prominent newspaper broker. It was during Matthew’s time that the huge murals went up, believed to be painted by the same artist who did those in Clearwater’s extravagant Kapok Tree restaurant. Matthew also had a thing for cherubs. Their sweet little faces looking down from a ceiling are said to bear a striking resemblance to those of his wives and girlfriends. Matthew hosted famous guests at what people continued to call the Kellogg Mansion. Among them were top golfers who played at the Dunedin Golf Club with its legendary Donald Ross-designed course, and actor Sean “James Bond’’ Con-

nery, who had a friend who lived in the city. After Nielsen and Webb bought the house in 2003, they dubbed the man cave “Shaken Not Stirred,’’ as Bond liked his martinis. During their years of ownership, the couple has collected many other stories about the house. How the topsoil for the lawn was transported by train from Tennessee. How the cabinetry purportedly was made from a tree that once grew at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home. How the landscaping includes so many exotic plants from around the world that not all of them have been identified. “There’s a thorn tree that has bifurcated thorns,’’ Nielsen says. “Every year, people come and take clippings and we still don’t know what it is.’’ He and Webb love the house, but at more than 7,500 heated square feet, it’s too big for just the two of them. In November 2017, they listed it for $4.5 million: Of all houses that were shown on realtor.com that week, it was the most popular. The house is still on the market, still waiting for a buyer who loves crystal and cherubs and stunning sunset views. APRIL 2019

Preserving our greatest amenity BY MAGGIE DUFFY

FLORIDA’S NATURAL BEAUTY, THE BEACHES, lakes, springs and rivers, woods and wetlands, is part of what draws 1,000 new residents each day. And it’s why so many of us already live here. But as the state grows in population, so does development that encroaches on our biggest amenity: nature. Yet two housing developments that have opened in the past several years were built not only with nature in mind, but also sustainability. Babcock Ranch, near Fort Myers, and Starkey Ranch in Odessa include miles of green space and trails built to encourage an outdoor lifestyle. And they both offset the impact of development.

NATURE

One of the things that we always had a desire to do was to build a place from the ground up and do it the right way and do it in an environmentally responsible way.” SYD KITSON

BABCOCK RANCH When Syd Kitson, president and founder of West Palm Beach real estate development firm Kitson and Partners, first learned the 91,000acre Babcock Ranch was for sale, he saw the opportunity to build an entirely sustainable community, and the chance to preserve nature. The property, which straddles Charlotte and Lee counties, near Fort Myers, had been owned by the Babcock family since 1914 and is a working ranch for logging and agriculture. It’s also home to the Babcock Preserve, a connecting piece of the Florida Wildlife Corridor. The 2006 real estate transaction was historic. It was a unique private-public partnership between the state of Florida and Kitson and Partners, and includes the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Forest Service. Kitson and Partners bought the property, then sold more than 74,000 acres to the state of Florida. In 2006, the Babcock Preserve Act was enacted by the Florida Legislature, making it the first preserve responsible for generating its own funding, which comes from the working ranch. Kitson, an avid nature lover, considers himself a conservationist

first, then a developer. He said he realizes the impact of development and building, and he made a vow to mitigate those effects. So when he was planning the nearly 18,000-acre residential community of Babcock Ranch, his focus was on sustainability. It was a radical idea at the time. “One of the things that we always had a desire to do was to build a place from the ground up and do it the right way and do it in an environmentally responsible way,” Kitson said. “When we first started the process of owning Babcock back in 2005, I talked about being the most sustainable new community and new town that has ever been developed. And people were going, ‘What does that mean?’” Fast-forward 13 years, and Kitson and Partners succeeded in making Babcock Ranch a completely sustainable town. Residents began moving in in January 2018. The town is entirely solar powered, the first in the country. They partnered with Florida Power & Light to provide the land for its solar facility. There are landscaping requirements that limit turf coverage and require the planting of native plants, trees and shrubs. Reclaimed water is used for irrigation, and “rain gardens” mirror the filtering effect of natural marshlands. Homes were built to meet energy-efficient building standards, resulting in lower household costs. There’s a community garden and plans for on-site community farming plots. Babcock Ranch is also a “smart” community, a vision that would have been harder to imagine in 2006, but as technology advanced, Kitson and Partners began to weave it into the utilities. Through a partnership with CenturyLink, all homes come with fiber-optic internet. Solar “trees” throughout town act as charging stations. There are plans for a network of low-speed automated electric vehicles to shuttle residents around. And the elliptical machines and treadmills in the Health and Wellness Center put energy back into the building when they are in use.

Starkey Ranch has hundreds of acres of parks and open space and miles of paved trails.

STARKEY RANCH Before Wheelock Communities developed Starkey Ranch in 2013, the property had a long history of preservation. Originally purchased by Jay B. Starkey and the Cunningham brothers in 1937, the 16,000-acre CS Ranch, cut by the Pithlachascotee and Anclote rivers, hosted cattle and timber and citrus operations. By 1965, Starkey, disturbed by the level of development happening in Florida, sold off a stretch of land to the Southwest Florida Water Management District to ensure it wouldn’t be developed. The Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve was born, and after Starkey’s death in 1989, heirs sold off more land to the state for preservation. Jay B. Starkey Jr. and his wife, Marsha, continued to live and work on the ranch, keeping the effort alive to protect it from overdevelopment. They built the Greenleaf neighborhood in the 1990s and ran an ecotourism business on the ranch. In 2013, Wheelock Communities purchased the remaining 2,500

acres from the family and began building a community that will have 800 acres of parks and open space and 20 miles of trails. Project director Matt Call credits the property’s history of preservation as a special opportunity when planning the community. They worked with the Southwest Florida Water Management District to understand responsible practices in water usage and water quality. They provide reclaimed water to residents for irrigation and worked with irrigation professionals to design and install a water-efficient irrigation system composed of low-volume and micro-irrigation. The landscaping includes drought-tolerant plants that use less water and fewer pesticides. They also take steps to reduce the impact of development on the land. “We plant a lot more trees than we ever take,” Call said. “One of the cool things we do is, for every acre of wetland we impact, we plant four more to offset that. It’s great to create these up-andcoming wetlands, because it adds more wildlife because there’s more habitat.”

Babcock Ranch and Starkey Ranch also focus on the outdoor lifestyle that attracts so many new residents. They are both full of trails for hiking and biking, places to fish and kayak, and green spaces to enjoy the outdoors.

Starkey Ranch was also built to encourage outdoor play. This is the playground at Homestead Park. Photograph courtesy of Starkey Ranch

Both Babcock Ranch and Starkey Ranch also focus on the outdoor lifestyle that attracts so many new residents. They are both full of trails for hiking and biking, places to fish and kayak, and green spaces to enjoy the outdoors. You can rent kayaks or take boat rides at Babcock Ranch, and Starkey Ranch hosts a 5K and 10K Distance Classic. Kitson and Call agree the amenities, as well as community activities, are in high demand from potential home buyers. Call said he polled residents of Starkey Ranch about their reasons for relocating. “About 56 percent respond and say they were looking for a better community to live in,” he said. “That has to do with lifestyle and the amenities and programming. The demographic of late 20s to mid-40s is one of the demographics that moves there because of these activities.” Another commonality between the two developments is that both encourage residents to get to know their neighbors. Beyond all the parks, trails and activities, the houses themselves were designed to bring people outside, with big front porches and designs from different builders. The concept is called New Urbanism, and it is really a vision

of small-town America, where children play outdoors and neighbors wave to each other. And, the price of the homes is wide ranging. Homes at Babcock Ranch start in the $200,000 range and go up to $1 million. Starkey Ranch prices range from $240,000 to $900,000. The response to each community has been very positive, according to developers. Since November 2015, when the first residents started moving into Starkey Ranch, sales have closed on 836 homes. RCLCO Real Estate Advisors in January ranked Starkey Ranch the top-selling master-planned community in Tampa Bay. Babcock Ranch has become home to 400 residents since it opened last January. Progress also can be measured by the number of classes that have been added to the community’s A-graded, K-8 charter school. A high school is also planned. More businesses in the town center and a major grocery store are projected in the next few years. A storm shelter also is in the works, the first in Charlotte County. “Every time you add those types of things, it just creates more of a community for people,” Kitson said.

hether dropping off children at college or visiting for alumni events, it’s always gratifying to find a

comfortable spot close to campus. When I need to attend events at my daughter’s college, I love to stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel. But anyone who has experienced Los Angeles traffic knows it’s impossible to get to some places at peak hours and our favorite hotel is not always practical. Luckily I found a quaint place close to campus. We talked to some Bay readers about their experiences at their favorite college lodgings.

For convenience, I was delighted to find the Inn at Playa del Rey. It’s a 22-room, boutique hotel located within eyesight of my daughter’s university, Loyola Marymount. It’s close to the airport with a tranquil view of the 600-acre Ballona Wetlands bird sanctuary and a sliver of the Pacific Ocean. The inn has a welcoming dining room where a home-cooked breakfast, including warm breads and muffins, is served each morning by the fireplace. Wine and cheeses are offered in the evenings in the window-walled living room, with its own fireplace and overstuffed sofas. We’ve become familiar with the staff members and restaurants within walking distance of the inn. It’s also a great place to meet other parents with students at the same school. Many colleges have their own version of the inn. Be forewarned: These places book up early, often up to a year or more in advance.

THE CAROLINA INN UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL My husband’s family has been part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since it was founded in the late 1700s. William “Uncle Bill” Saunders was a trustee of the university and the former namesake of the building housing the English department. My husband was the first generation to break tradition, deciding to pursue degrees in music and law on the West Coast instead. We visited numerous times, though never got our children to apply. We did, however, get to stay at the historic Carolina Inn. Charming doesn’t begin to describe it. The hotel was built in 1924 by UNC alumnus John Sprunt Hill, who gifted it to the university in 1935, stipulating the profits be used to support the library. Treasure Island’s Janet Peterson and her husband, Dr. J. Andrew Peterson, have stayed at the Carolina Inn 13 times since their son Luke was accepted at UNC in 2016. Janet said she joined the hotel’s 1924 club in hopes of earning enough points to book a room for Luke’s graduation in 2020. The hotel is within walking distance of the stadium and basketball arena, the medical center, the shopping district and the fields where her son runs track and cross country for the school teams. “I love the size of the hotel,” Janet said of the 185-room landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel was modeled after George Washington’s home in Mount Vernon. “The baby blue colors and the historic photos on the walls make me feel that I am a part of that community,” she said.

Janet Peterson also spent many weekends at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Mass., while her daughter Laura attended Harvard. A block from the Charles River and a 10-minute drive to downtown Boston, the Charles Hotel is in the heart of Harvard Square. The 295-room hotel underwent a $20 million renovation in recent years. Dr. Jeffrey Neustadt and his wife, Susan, spent many nights at the hotel while their son Gabe attended Harvard. “It’s very beautiful, it’s sort of nautical in atmosphere,” Susan said. “It’s walking distance to the university and they have a great restaurant with great food.” She especially enjoyed visiting the morning markets located right outside the hotel entrance during the spring months. “It’s almost like a bed and breakfast, it’s so warm and cozy,” she said. Hotel general manager Alex Attia said the Charles is also a great place to spot everyone from “world leaders to movie stars; scholars to artists; and politicians to philanthropists. You may sit next to Cornell West during breakfast at Henrietta’s Table and Matt Damon at supper.”

Hillary Coleman fondly remembers the weekend she stayed at the Governors Inn during a torrential downpour. The staff at the historic Tallahassee hotel couldn’t have been more attentive. “They came out with a big umbrella every time I went in or out and they just couldn’t do enough to make my stay better,” said Hillary, a 1985 graduate of Florida State University whose daughter Courtney enrolled in 2017. She liked the historic features of the hotel, including the exposed beams from the days when the structure was a livery stable. With just 41 rooms, it has an intimate lodge feeling. “I love that all of the rooms are decorated differently,” she said, pointing to the antique furnishings. Many of the rooms are named for previous Florida governors. Southern hospitality is a key theme. “I’ve just always felt they took an interest in their guests much more so than a bigger hotel,” she said. “I liked that I could just find a comfy spot in the lobby and relax there for a while without being disturbed.” The hotel is a short walk from the state Capitol and FSU, and a five- to 10-minute drive to Florida A&M University.

SWEETWATER BRANCH INN UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA

Named after the University of Florida’s fifth president, J. Wayne Reitz, this boutique hotel is located within the student union. Operated by students, the 36-room hotel serves as their professional training ground. Hotel guests have access to all of the restaurants and shops within the campus union as well as free parking and views of the campus from each room. But, to St. Petersburg’s Sue Heron, the hotel is “a really good, well-kept secret.” She has stayed there while visiting daughters Courtney, a UF graduate, and Caillin, a senior. She likes the comfort of the traditional-looking rooms with their vintage photos. “It’s a diamond in the rough and it’s right there on campus,” she said. “When we have breaks during meetings we can go to the hotel and relax and change clothes. The people staying off-campus can’t do that.” After the hotel and the entire student union were renovated and reopened in 2016, sports weekends booked up so fast the hotel had to institute a lottery system for rooms on game days. The Herons have already reserved their rooms for graduation.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and his wife, Kerry, enjoy staying at the Sweetwater Branch Inn when they visit daughter Jordan at UF. A graduate himself, Kriseman regularly attends football games at his alma mater. A mile away from the UF campus, the bed and breakfast opened in 1993 on 2 acres dotted with cottages. The chef prepares a homemade breakfast each morning and a spread of wine and cheeses each afternoon. On their most recent stay, the Krisemans booked a cottage right behind the main house, which Kerry described as “quaint and comfortable” with a relaxing front porch. “At brunch, they set out a long dining room table with absolutely delicious food and just-strong-enough coffee,” she said, adding that she enjoys walks on the lush grounds of the inn, which include flower gardens, fountains and a pool.

MORRIS INN 130 Morris Inn Notre Dame, Ind. (574) 631-2000 morrisinn.nd.edu

WASHINGTON DUKE INN & GOLF CLUB DUKE UNIVERSITY Located on 300 acres of the campus of Duke University, the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club is owned by the Durham, N.C., university and beloved by students and alumni. St. Petersburg’s Elizabeth Skidmore, a Duke graduate, makes the hotel her base when attending conferences, reunions and family weddings on the sprawling property. “It’s kind of the pulse of the community,” she said. The inn is named for civil war soldier Washington Duke, an industrialist, founder of the American Tobacco Company and later a philanthropist, and the inn’s logo incorporates the family coat of arms. “They have old black-and-white photos of the buildings and the Duke Chapel and Washington Duke himself,” said Elizabeth, who most recently has been visiting her nephew, who attends the school. Many of those photos and artifacts were donated by Duke’s great-grandson, Angier Biddle Duke, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador, Spain, Morocco and Denmark before his death in 1995. The public areas of the hotel are dedicated to various family members, including the Fairview Dining Room named for Washington Duke’s 1880s home on Durham’s Main Street. “It’s a very comfortable place, so homey and fun,” Elizabeth said.

MORRIS INN UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME Perhaps one of the most difficult rooms to secure on a college campus, the University of Notre Dame’s Morris Inn is in the heart of the South Bend, Ind., campus. Referred to by regulars as “the living room” of the university, it’s a popular place to gather for meetings, business lunches and reunions. The hotel, owned and operated by Notre Dame, was opened in 1952 as part of the university’s postwar building program financed through a $1 million donation from former student Ernest M. M

aruchi Blanco can describe the different weaves of fine bedsheets. She knows the value of her favorite, Italian-woven, long-staple cotton sheets in every thread count. “The French weave a wonderful percale, she said, pointing to a crisper sheet and sateen options in her Tampa store, Villa Rosa Distinctive Linens. One of the first things I did after getting married in 1991 was purchase a monogrammed, linen tablecloth at Villa Rosa. After every use, I had it drycleaned and then hung it in a closet. That was until my most recent visit. Blanco cautioned me about hanging dry-cleaned linens in plastic wrap.

Since Villa Rosa first opened 35 years ago, Blanco has added towels and bed linens to the inventory. The business is decorated with framed pieces of embroidered napkins and lace woven by Blanco’s grandmother in her native Cuba. “If you are going to use your Christmas tablecloth for Easter, that’s fine,” she said. “But if it’s longer, our humidity is the perfect environment for little bugs.” Instead, she said, wash linens and store them in a pillowcase. I’m passionate about linens. I love the texture and the beauty they add to even the simplest of menus. I lay tablecloths for nearly every meal in our home and love tea towels collected from our family travels. I use the towels to decorate, or when I want a particular color palette or theme for a party. I often set out china and dishes for a buffet on floral linen napkins. They’re perfect for lining bread baskets and bringing a little elegance to simple food. It’s amazing how much better meatloaf and fried chicken taste when served in showy style. Since Villa Rosa first opened 35 years ago, Blanco has added towels and bed linens to the inventory. The business is decorated with framed pieces of embroidered napkins and lace woven by Blanco’s grandmother in her native Cuba. “That is the heart and soul of my store,” she said. She started carrying French cotton tablecloths “because there was a great demand,” she said. “People were entertaining more and more.” She also created her own table linen laundry service to keep customers coming back. “After locals traveled to Europe they would see people sleeping under duvet covers and on Egyptian cotton sheets,” she said. That’s when she added sheets from Italy and France to her collection. “The higher the thread count, the heavier the sheet,” she said. She sells thread counts from 300 to 1,000 and doesn’t necessarily prefer the higher counts in her own home. “It’s a matter of preference and having sheets that are woven by the right people in the right places,” she said. The sheets can be pricey, with a king-sized flat sheet ranging from $220 to $840. “But think how much time we spend sleeping.”

She also carries French Damask (one color) and French Jacquard (multicolored) tablecloths. Like most of her linens, they are washable and don’t need ironing. A personal favorite of mine are the French GarnierThiebaut table linens. They also are not as expensive as some of the other brands. Blanco has a large selection of the French kitchen tea towels ranging from $24 to $27. Demand for the French designs has been universal. Recently, I stumbled on a popup linen show where I purchased numerous sizes and shapes of the French Damask and Jacquard linens. Amelie Michel, a Connecticut-based company, comes to Florida every February. I visited the show on Valentine’s weekend in Sarasota. The owners, Michael Williams and his late wife, Amelia, fell in love with the fabrics while visiting a family homestead in southern France in the 1990s. They brought some of the tablecloths home to their farm in Connecticut, where Amelia used them to cover the farm stand tables. When neighbors and friends started asking for the tablecloths, Michael Williams started returning from France with duffle bags full of linens. In 2002, they began their business, using the French forms of their names for the logo. From a warehouse in Essex, Conn., the company sells mostly online at ameliemichel.com. The business is open to the public a few times a year, and then Williams and his employees take the linens on the road to all parts of the United States, following the seasons. They visit Florida in winter, the West in the summer and the East Coast during the fall. “What we really love about the fabrics is their ease of use,” said Elizabeth Denham, who has worked for the company for eight years. Most of the fabrics are 70 percent cotton and 30 percent polyester. They are machine washable and “they come out of the dryer looking pretty good.” Her favorite is a linen tablecloth called Darjeeling, featuring a beige background and bright reds, greens and blue flowers. “I wouldn’t use it every day, but for a special occasion that’s definitely a showstopper,” she said. A company specialty are 100 percent cotton tablecloths coated with acrylic so they can be easily wiped down with a sponge. The acrylic-coated, square tablecloths are their biggest sellers. One of the most popular linens at ameliemichel.com is this cotton blue tablecloth with lemons, favored for being a traditional French pattern. The 70-inch round tablecloth sells online for $59.

“They look just like natural linen,” Denham said. “Our blue and yellow combinations are always very popular, too, because that’s just a classic French look.” Amelie Michel ships fabrics from France and makes tablecloths in nearby Fall River, Conn. The company uses fabric remnants to make additional napkins, place mats and table runners for the traveling shows. Blanco also repurposes. She has used lace found in Paris flea markets to adorn linens and took a vintage French lace tablecloth from the same market, added some fabric to the back and sides and created a one-of-a-kind duvet cover. She often frames some of her most popular kitchen towels as gifts for friends. My inspiration to repurpose my linens came last year when I decided to turn my favorite tea towels into a tablecloth. I mailed a stack to a seamstress who stitched them into a quiltlike pattern with a backing. Every time I use the tablecloth, we reminisce about our trans-Atlantic voyage on the Queen Mary, our visit to the Eiffel Tower or our tour of Buckingham Palace before a Royal Wedding. I’m not sure my children will appreciate the linens I have collected or our woven family history, but I am determined to keep setting my tables with memories.

FAB TOUCH

BY AMY SCHERZER

D

evelopers of Riverwalk Place believe they scored quite the coup when they lured New Yorker Thom Filicia to design all the social components of the 50-story-plus residential and retail tower set to break ground in downtown Tampa later this year.

The popular designer, author and television personality will leave his imprint on the grand lobby, sky lounge, pool, spa, club room and other common spaces of the $350 million project at the corner of Ashley Drive and E Whiting Street overlooking the Hillsborough River. Condominiums from $700,000 to more than $2 million, plus five restaurants, are planned for what is expected to be the tallest building on the west coast of Florida. Filicia has written three design books, stars on the Bravo television network and markets his own rugs, bedding, textiles and artwork under the Thom Filicia Home Collection label. He works all over the world for superstars like Oprah and Jennifer Lopez and commercial clients from Audi to Xerox. So why is he so excited about Tampa Bay?

How did you get involved with Riverwalk Place? Were you attracted by the buzz about the $3 billion Water Street project underway nearby? Some of my favorite people live here. I only learned about Water Street after I had already done the sales center. I’ve been coming to Largo for years to develop art with Richard Forsyth of the Wendover Art Group, so I was brought into Riverwalk by one of the developers, Two Roads, who I already had a relationship with since I designed parts of the Biscayne Beach condo tower in South Florida. It’s beautiful and did really well and I became good friends with them. It’s awesome to see the downtowns in Tampa and St. Pete growing with interesting shops and galleries. Everyone I know there is invested in so many different projects, really active participation wanting to make it grow and wanting other people to appreciate it. I’ve really seen a renaissance of Tampa itself since I started working on Riverwalk. The texture of the city has a really wonderful balance. I see a similar energy in Nashville coming from established people and entrepreneurs. Is it different working in Tampa than New York or the Caribbean or Japan? We work all over the country and outside of the country. I always look at each location in terms of point of view, aesthetic, energy, vibe. What’s feeding us this info? Is it a lake? Bay? River? Ocean? You really have to understand the experience, authentically, and capitalize on what typifies it. Tampa is starting to percolate and happen, and people from different parts of the world are investing.

Tell us about your theme for Riverwalk Place and how you will embrace Tampa culture and the waterfront. No theme, but an overall aesthetic look and feel to make it feel elevated and still approachable and livable, warm and friendly and fresh and new. I looked at it holistically to feel authentic and specific to Tampa but not seem like the expected solution that we’ve seen before. The concept is waterfront access, merging city club and your home at the river’s edge. It’s really about bringing all those elements together in a way that doesn’t feel nautical or beachy but timeless and sophisticated and modern and human so it ages well. So you don’t look at it in four or five years and say, “Oh, I remember that look.” Great design looks great in 15 or 20 years. You don’t want it to not respond to its location — water meets city — you just want it to be subliminal and a little bit unexpected and fresh. Go see the sales center, it gives a good flavor. I push the envelope a bit more than what’s seen in the past in terms of fit and finish based on what we think makes sense and understanding the demographic of people who want to live downtown effortlessly.

I’ve really seen a renaissance of Tampa itself since I started working on Riverwalk. The texture of the city has a really wonderful balance.”

Will you be designing some of the condos for Riverwalk buyers? I try to be a sounding board in laying out the floor plans so they make sense and are not just generic. But I’m not doing individual units, unless they hire us. I did amenities and what we call the hardscape, the stuff that won’t shake out if you tip it upside down. That includes the wall covering, lighting, door hardware, kitchen tops and appliances, plumbing and fixtures to make the individual units designer-ready. What do you do with your free time here? Where do you hang out? I’ve met so many people through the real estate company. I’ve gone to restaurants by boat, dinners in St. Pete, people’s houses on Harbour Island, weekend houses at the beach. I’ve been going to Bern’s, the Epicurean, Armature Works, Ybor. It’s been a great experience, professionally and personally, and fun to be part of the great energy. How much fun did you have filming Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and now Get a Room With Carson & Thom? Did you know your pal Carson Kressley has been a frequent visitor here? It is so much fun being around him and I did not know that. Carson didn’t mention it but I’d be glad to do something with him here. Maybe something like the Ronald McDonald House project I helped redesign a few years ago (in Fort Myers). Do you have an eye on any real estate purchases in our corner of the globe? Yes, maybe even in Riverwalk Place. I love Tampa.
