Migraines + Magnesium BY YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD HEART PHARMACIST
have talked about magnesium in a couple of my articles, but not really about its’ use. I commonly recommend this supplement to people to help reduce the frequency of migraines. May is a month where people mention that they get more migraines. Perhaps these are from a change in the weather? Either way, migraines hurt. This is a gross understatement for those who are afflicted by these vicious headaches. I thought about migraines when a patient asked if there were any vitamins that could help. She had tried avoiding migraine triggering foods — wine, aged cheese, caffeine withdrawal, chocolate, MSG, shell fish and cow’s milk — all with no luck. A few medications that can help prevent migraines proved unhelpful. I have a few options that can help with migraines, with the best supplement options being magnesium and vitamin B2.
What causes a migraine and why does it hurt so much? The exact causes of migraines are not known, but researchers have a few ideas. One theory involves a three-step process. The first step is referred to as “initiation”. During this step, something begins the migraine’s chain of events. It could be stress, food allergies or other triggers. During the second step, called
“prodrome”, the body responds to these triggers by releasing blood vessel constricting substances. This causes reduced blood flow in certain parts of the brain. It is believed this blood-flow reduction may cause the ‘aura’ that is experienced before a migraine headache attack. The third or “headache” step is where your body responds to this reduced blood flow by causing rapid blood vessel dilation. This increased blood flow might cause the pounding sensation felt during a migraine. This is a simplified version of what it believed to happen. The process of trying to condense an entire theory, written in medical science-speak, into real English, makes my head hurt.
What are the symptoms of a migraine? These are not very pleasant. As well as severe throbbing pain, symptoms may include sensitivity to light and/or noise, and nausea and/or vomiting.
When should you contact your doctor about your migraine? There are a few warning signs that should alert you to seek urgent medical attention: • A very sudden “thunderclap” headache • A headache after a blow to the head • A headache with other seemingly unrelated symptoms, such as numbness, vision changes, slurred speech, unusual confusion or weakness.
• A very different type of headache than is usually experienced • A headache with symptoms of fever, stiff neck, drowsiness, vomiting and confusion. The mineral ‘magnesium’ has also shown to be helpful in reducing the frequency of migraine headaches. Often, people who regularly suffer from migraines tend to have lower amounts of magnesium in their bodies. I tend to recommend up to 500mg of magnesium citrate to help prevent migraine headaches. Side effects are rare, but higher doses of magnesium tend to have a laxative-like effect. Other side effects include low blood pressure, thirst, fatigue and muscle weakness. There are some possible drug interactions with magnesium. Ask your Heart Pharmacist if higher doses of magnesium are safe for you to take with your medications. I feel this option should be seriously considered by anyone who regularly gets migraine headaches. It is thought that low magnesium is a major, unrecognized health concern. re you aware of your functional fitness? If not, your ability to care for your loved one could be at risk. “Functional fitness” describes a person’s ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). The family caregiver must be functionally fit to provide care to both themselves and their loved ones. As you care for someone, you end up carrying more of their weight — especially when transferring. Your back is going to take the brunt of the strain after repeating these motions. Learn to support your core — learning how to properly push, pull, carry and lift is vital. Family caregivers should be much more aware of their core strength. The primary claim made by professional care providers to Work Safe BC are back-related injuries. Professionals get time off when they hurt their backs. You won’t.
A lack of knowledge of your functional fitness could turn into injuries when you are faced with an emergency. If your loved one suddenly falls, your instinct to leap to their aid might have serious consequences. Garnering the strength and skill to safely transfer the person you care for is imperative. Finding a block of time to exercise can be difficult, but if you take a different approach, you can incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Here are some ideas that will benefit you and your functional fitness: • In the kitchen: perform 10 squats while holding onto the counter. • While cooking a meal: transfer your weight from one leg to the other. If you can do it safely, balance on one leg, then the other. • Before settling in to watch TV: perform 10 “sit-to-stands”, or press your hand into your thigh and lift your leg up for five seconds. • Walking through the living room: pick up some three-pound weights and do one repetition of biceps and triceps exercises.
• When watching a fitness DVD with your loved one: engage them in the activity by creatively modifying the exercise for them while you perform the full moves. • If your loved one is in a wheelchair: pack both of you up and head to Beacon Hill Park. Properly engaging your core muscles while walking will give you a good workout. Try and have some fun so it doesn’t feel so much like exercise. With a little creative thought and guidance, you can find many ways for self-care and exercise. The alternative could easily lead to injury. Then you won’t be any good to anyone — least of all yourself. Functional fitness exercises and core

fter graduating from high school in his hometown of Kamloops, Dr. Butler studied sciences at the University of Calgary for three years. He took a four-year program at the California College of Podiatry Medicine and graduated with honours.Butler received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree. Next, he completed a one-year surgical residency. His training continued in biomechanics with a one-year fellowship at Pacific Coast Hospital in San Francisco. This residency was the only biomechanics program offered in North America, and the education received has been an invaluable asset to his practice. After these nine years of post secondary education, Butler returned to Canada where he has practiced podiatry for 27 years in Victoria. The focus of Dr. Butler’s practice is the conservative care of foot and leg pathologies. The term ‘bunion’ refers to the bone enlargement of the big toe joint. The process occurring in the big toe joint is wear and tear arthritis (also known as degenerative joint disease, or osteoarthritis). Every step taken can contribute to the progressive breakdown of the big toe joint. Big toe joint arthritis can often lead to joint pain, shoe gear irritation and toes over-lapping.
